Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said on Saturday that he decided to grant political asylum to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on 2012 because his life was in risk.

During his weeklyreport, Correa said that Assange didnt have the basic guarantees for a fair trial. His life was in danger.

Assange has been living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since June 19th, when he was grantedpoliticalasylum inthe embassy.Assange's political asylumcaused a diplomaticcrisis between the UK and Ecuador.

Assange was accused of rape in Sweden,but he said that it was just a political play to extradite him to the U.S., where he could have received the death penalty.

There was the threat that the U.S. judged him under the anti terrorist law, which can lead to death penalty said Correa.

Last Monday, Ecuadors Foreign Minister, Ricardo Patino, reassured that Assanges would continue to receive asylum, and said that Ecuador is willing to find a solution for this problem along with British and Swedish governments.
