Kevin Kiermaier will stand for anthem, supports Rays teammates who wont – Tampa Bay Times

ST. PETERSBURG Any social-justice statement made by the Rays during Fridays season-opening national anthem wont be a completely collaborative demonstration.

The longest-tenured current Ray said Wednesday he plans to stand, though he supports any teammate who chooses to do otherwise.

I love this great country we live in, and obviously theres a lot of crazy stuff going on right now, but I will be standing, centerfielder Kevin Kiermaier said. I cant speak for everyone else, but I will be standing.

Kiermaier, who begins his seventh full season with the club Friday, said the team has had conversations about what to do or not do during the anthem as protests for racial justice continue throughout the country. The general sentiment, he indicated, is to allow each player to express himself as he sees fit, with the support of his peers.

Were not gonna make it a group thing like, Hey, we all have to do this or that, Kiermaier said.

Each individual has a preference on what they want to do, and thats all Ill say on that matter, because we understand where everyones coming from in many different ways. But at the same time, everyone has the right to do what they choose, and we have to respect that.

Right-handed reliever Pete Fairbanks concurred.

I havent made up my mind on what I plan to do for the anthem, he said. If people want to kneel, if they dont want to kneel, that is their right to do that through the First Amendment and ... the people who fought to uphold that freedom. So whatever stance people take, Im all for.

Manager Kevin Cash brandished his coveted bullpen during Wednesdays four-inning simulated scrimmage, letting eight different relievers face at least two batters each.

No one gave up an extra-base hit. The most impressive: right-hander Oliver Drake, who took the mound first and struck out Jose Martinez (swinging at a high fastball) and Joey Wendle before exiting. Nine of his 10 pitches were for strikes.

The thought and the idea of managing games is certainly back in the fold, Cash said.

It was not for a while there; it wasnt even probably that first week of spring (2.0). But when you see those guys bouncing from the bullpen on to the mound, and the potential of the mixing and matching that we can do to put ourselves in a position to win, it gets really exciting.

The Rays decision to open the season with three catchers on the active roster obviously delighted Kevan Smith, who secured the final spot. A former Angel and nonroster invitee to the original spring training, Smith said he believes hell have ample playing opportunities based on the Rays in-game creativity.

Ive got to be ready to step in and catch a game, Ive got to be ready to pinch hit, catch late in the games, obviously that (designated hitter) spot against lefties, he said.

I think what weve got to think about here is where is this (COVID-19) virus gonna go, where are these injuries gonna take us, so I think theres gonna be a lot of ways to get at-bats and get some playing time.

Fergs Sports Bar & Grill will hold a watch party with some restrictions in place Friday starting at 5 p.m. at its Central Avenue site. A large-screen TV truck will be positioned in the restaurants east parking lot, while all other TVs also will be tuned in to the game. All indoor and outdoor seating will be socially distanced, and service will be provided only to those who are seated. Standing or sitting at the bars will be prohibited. ... The Rays and Royals worked out a deal for right-hander Stephen Woods, a Rule 5 pick last year, to stay with Kansas City. The Rays will get cash or a player to be named. ... Seiya Sano, a batting-practice pitcher and liaison to Yoshi Tsutsugo, logged some outfield action for the second consecutive scrimmage, starting in right field for the light-blue squad.

Unbelievable. Theres many words to describe them, but theres not one guy on that mound that youre not worried about. Theres not a comfortable at-bat. Smith, offering a general assessment of the Rays pitching staff

Nearly half of Americans think cancel culture has gone TOO FAR… but 2 in 5 admit participating in it – RT

Most Americans familiar with cancel culture deplatforming or firing people due to public outcry over a supposedly offensive or objectionable comment or action believe its done serious harm to society, a new poll has found.

Some 46 percent of Americans think cancel culture has gone too far, according to the poll conducted earlier this month by Morning Consult and published on Wednesday.

While just over a quarter (26 percent) of respondents claimed to have no opinion on the matter, those who thought cancel culture had overstayed its welcome dramatically outnumbered the 10 percent who suggested it hadnt gone far enough. Indeed, many of those surveyed across all demographics disapproved either somewhat or strongly of people participating in cancel culture.

Notably, just 27 percent were willing to state that the phenomenon had had a positive effect on society and of those, just a few (six percent) would say that effect had been very positive. Just shy of half the respondents thought its effect had been negative overall, with most answering very negative.

Overall, 40 percent of poll respondents admitted to participating in cancel culture.Young adults aged 18 to 34 were much more likely (55 percent) than those over 65 (32 percent) to acknowledge their participation, and while half of Democrats acknowledged theyd participated, only a third of Republicans said they had.

Defined for the purposes of the poll as the practice of withdrawing support for (or canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive, cancel culture has been front and center in the media in recent months, as a flurry of high-profile firings have been accompanied by a seemingly endless parade of cringeworthy celebrity apologies for past transgressions on social media.

But a growing public backlashagainst the phenomenon gave rise to an open letter published earlier this month in Harpers Magazinecondemning the increasing constriction of the free exchange of information and ideas and the rise of forceful ideological conformity.

Its credibility was dealt something of an ironic death blow when signatories began pulling out due to the presence of some problematic names essentially defeating the purpose of standing together against cancel culture.

Indeed, several of the leading lights of the anti-cancel-culture movement have been gleeful participants in cancel culture in the past, one of the most notable example perhaps being Bari Weiss, the New York Times op-ed writer who resigned from the paper earlier this month with a melodramatic letter decrying constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with [her] views. Weiss herself led a campaign while enrolled at Columbia University to smear Arab professors critical of Israel as racists with the intention of getting them fired, a scorched-earth operation decried as a witch hunt by the New York Civil Liberties Union.

However, Morning Consults poll revealed a sizable chunk of Americans are utterly disconnected from the cancel-culture ecosphere, with 35 percent claiming they were not familiar at all, or only minimally familiar, with the practice.

Ellen Pao calls for more Facebook censorship, says its the right thing to do – Reclaim The Net

Ellen Pao keeps trying to make Ellen Pao happen. But, to paraphrase her own words the world doesnt seem to think shes important.

This former Reddit CEO was forced to quit after a backlash caused by her (early) attempts to muzzle and censor free and unruly-by-nature Reddit communities. And although her legacy in this sense has since been gaining more and more momentum on that fairly unique social platform few credit or still remember Pao as the pioneer of the current woeful policies.

Pao, who has since co-founded a diversity consulting non-profit called Project Include, (which is exactly what it sounds like it is) also in the meanwhile lost a gender discrimination lawsuit against former employers Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

But there are still friendly outlets like The Guardian who will give her space and time, and now, its time for Pao to offer her two cents on free speech moderation on giant social media in the context of their treatment of ills such as racism, and presidents such as Donald Trump.

Double your web browsing speed with today's sponsor. Get Brave.

Under the headline, They dont think its important: Ellen Pao on why Facebook cant beat hate Pao whose approach to Reddit back in the day is described cynically as a more holistic view of protecting free expression shares lessons she thinks she learned while attempting to detoxify Reddit (Guardians choice of words).

The issue is Facebook allowing Trump to have a voice on the platform, even as others like Twitter, Reddit itself, and YouTube went about labeling his posts, banning subreddits, etc., all on hate speech grounds.

So why is Facebook holding out? According to Pao, Facebook has an unintelligible set of rules for moderators, and the higher-ups are simply not paying any attention.

Pao also advises less outsourced mercenary moderator staff and instead incorporates them into the full-time employee collective for better allegiance to the cause and of course, better control.

She even suggests that some Facebook moderators despite insider testimonies showing some of them stringently and openly anti-free expression might be making pro-Trump decisions because they are being bullied, unbeknownst to Facebook.

But why would Facebook disregard these points? The interviewer prods Pao on in a tiringly predictable direction.

Most of the CEOs of social media companies are white, and most of them are men. I believe that youre the only woman of color who has run a major platform. Do you think that that informed the way that you approached the job?

To nobodys surprise, Pao agreed. As for what Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and Susan Wojcicki need to do Just do the right thing. Most of them know what the right thing to do is. Just have that conviction and push your way through.

First Mover: This DeFi-Ready Token Is Teaching Crypto Traders to Cherish Inflation – CoinDesk – CoinDesk

One of the things crypto traders like about bitcoin is that itsresistant to inflation, potentially serving as a hedge against the trillions of dollars of money that central banks have printed this year to address the coronavirus-inflicted economic collapse.

But what if a cryptocurrency were designed to produce its own inflation as a good thing?

Youre readingFirst Mover, CoinDesks daily markets newsletter. Assembled by the CoinDesk Markets Team, First Mover starts your day with the most up-to-date sentiment around crypto markets, which of course never close, putting in context every wild swing in bitcoin and more. We follow the money so you dont have to. You cansubscribe here.

Thats the principle behind the cryptocurrency project Ampleforths AMPL tokens, which are suddenly getting a fresh look from traders after a tenfold increase in their total supply over the past three weeks to 340 million.

Though the projects market capitalization of $398 million is still tiny in relative terms, at just 0.23% of bitcoins $170 billion, some analysts say AMPL could see further uptake as a new form of liquidity in the fast-growing arena of decentralized finance, or DeFi.

In fact, demand for the token has been so hot that its current price of about $2.77 is nearly three times the projects own target of $1.009. The impetus appears to have been Ampleforthslaunch last month of Geyser, a new rewards program that encourages the tokens use on Uniswap, a decentralized exchange.

The token has been on an absolute tear, Paul Burlage, an analyst with the cryptocurrency research firmDelphi Digital, wrote in a July 9 report.

Two years ago, a San Francisco-based engineer and robotics researcher namedEvan Kuo, alongside co-founder Brandon Iles and their team, decided to tackle a problem in digital-asset markets: tight correlations between bitcoin and alternative cryptocurrencies that make the market vulnerable to widespread sell-offs as traders scramble for cash or cash-like instruments such as dollar-backed stablecoins.

The dynamic poses risks for DeFi, where the cryptocurrencies are often pledged as collateral on semi-autonomous lending and borrowing platforms. The high correlations prevalent in todays cryptocurrencies create systemic risk, Kuo told First Mover in a Telegram chat.

So in December 2018, the team launched Ampleforth protocol with $3 million in funding from the likes of Brian Armstrong, CEO of the big U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase; Pantera Capital, a cryptocurrency investment fund; and True Ventures, a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm.

The project aims to address the systemic risk by designing a token to be mostly uncorrelated with other cryptocurrencies, and also isolated from swings in traditional financial markets.

The secret to the design is a combination of intentional inflation and anti-dilution: When prices for the AMPL token rise above a target, more units are issued directly to holders wallets in proportion to their holdings. Theoretically, the extra supply creates inflation that should help to push prices back down, but traders are made whole because they suddenly have more of the tokens.

The mechanism is supposed to limit price volatility, potentially making AMPL tokens more desirable as a stable form of collateral for DeFi systems.

AMPLs differentiated movement pattern reduces the risk of autoliquidation in the DeFi space, Kuo said.

According to theprojects website, traders can use the tokens to diversify investment portfolios, park as collateral in DeFi or even hold as a better bitcoin.

How AMPL works

Ampleforth has set a target price for AMPL based on the value of the U.S. dollar in 2019. And that target price is adjusted continuously based on the consumer price index, which offers a rough way of gauging monthly decreases in the dollars purchasing power.

But during times of heavy demand for the tokens, the market price can diverge from the target price. And that appears to be happening now, as traders deploy the AMPL tokens in fast-growing DeFi platforms.

On June 23, AMPL traded above its price threshold of $1.06 and never looked back, according to Delphi Digitals Burlage.

For example, on July 19, the token was trading at $2.95, nearly three times the target price. Under the rules of the protocol, the supply automatically increased by 16% at the end of the 24-hour period, according toAmpleforths dashboard.

The extra supply represents inflation that should theoretically reduce the value of each AMPL token. But since the extra supply goes into holders wallets, the overall value of their holdings should theoretically stay the same. Inflation, coupled with anti-dilution, as designed.

Burlage wrote that there are strong incentives built into the system encouraging traders to hold onto their AMPL tokens. But the market could turn, since its prone to a cyclical boom and bust cycle.

With the price running up, it is now a game of chicken between large holders to see who sells first and time the top, Burlage wrote.

It might be the future of money, but as is often the case in cryptocurrency markets, speculation and experimentation are the right-now.

Tweet of the day

Bitcoin watch

BTC: Price: $9,361 (BPI) | 24-Hr High: $9,445 | 24-Hr Low: $9,304

Trend:Bitcoin is struggling to extend Tuesdays 2.5% price gain.

The leading cryptocurrency by market value is currently trading near $9,360, representing a 0.4% decline on the day.

The immediate bias remains neutral as the cryptocurrencyremains trapped in tight range, as represented by Bollinger volatility bands, currently located at $9,424 and $9,037.

A move above the upper band would imply range breakout and could power the cryptocurrency higher to resistance at $9,800 (June 22 high) and possibly to the psychological hurdle of $10,000.Alternatively, a range breakdown would expose the 200-day moving average at $8,560.

A range breakdown may be seen if the global equities suffer sharp losses on the escalating China-U.S. tensions and the U.S. Congress inability to reach consensus on an additional coronavirus relief package. The cryptocurrency has recently developed a relatively strong correlation with the equity markets.

At press time, futures tied to the S&P 500 and major European indices are reporting moderate losses. Risk sentiment weakened early Wednesday after Washingtonordered China to close its consulatein Houston, marking an unprecedented escalation of tensions with the Asian nation.

Note: This article has been edited to show that AMPLs market cap is 0.23% of bitcoins market cap.

Cryptocurrency Market News: Facebook, Twitter, and Google facing a $600 million lawsuit over the ban of crypto ads – FXStreet

BTC/USD has been relatively stable, dropping to $9,261, right where both the daily 12-EMA and the 26-EMA are currently converging to create a bull cross.

ETH/USD remains trading at $245 and its still eying up $250 as the next crucial target.

XRP/USD climbed above $0.20 but its unclear if it will be able to sustain this price as there is a lot of selling pressure nearby.

Travala.com makes its way into our top gainers with a 27% price surge to $0,74 and aims to hit $1 in the near future. VeThor Token, somewhat forgotten, has also seen a significant value increase touching $0.0015.

After banning the advertisement of cryptocurrency projects, Twitter, Facebook and Google are now all facing a $600 million lawsuit by many Australian businesses represented by JPB Liberty, law firm. According to the firm, the businesses were greatly harmed because of the ban on crypto and are seeking damages amounting to $600 million.

Google already lifted its ban two years ago but only allowed regulated exchanges to advertise. Twitter, even though its CEO is vocally supporting crypto, has not lifted its ban just yet.

As reported earlier, banks in the US should now be able to provide custody services for cryptocurrencies. According to a report by Reuters, Jonathan Gould, the Senior Deputy Comptroller, and Senior Counsel wrote a letter addressed to an unidentified bank, stating that the demand for new technology like cryptocurrencies is increasing and banks will need to provide these services.

According to a recent press release, Bitrump, a cryptocurrency exchange will offer white label exchange architecture to the UAE crypto market.

Offering the white label architecture we want to extend our assistance and expertise in crypto technology to enterprises and entrepreneurs in based locally to start their very own exchange at half the cost and effort, mentioned Xavier Perry, the Director of Bitrump.

PayBito, another cryptocurrency exchange is extending its services to the Indian crypto industry. India has experienced a rapid growth in cryptocurrency adoption in recent years despite some legality issues in the past.

What cant kill Bitcoin, makes it stronger.

Who The Democratic And Republican Party Censors Are, For The ‘News’ You See & Hear – Scoop.co.nz

Thursday, 23 July 2020, 11:06 amArticle: Eric Zuesse

Eric Zuesse,originally posted at StrategicCulture

Back in July of 2016, I did a two-partarticle, American Samizdat Publication Forbidden in U.S., which went down therabbit-hole of news-suppression (censorship) in the UnitedStates but left, for the future, a more detailed descriptionof the money-track back to the individuals who control thatcensorship in serving the economic interests of the samebillionaires who control both the Democratic NationalCommittee and the Republican National Committee both ofAmericas two national political Parties (and they thusdetermined, forexample, in the Democratic Party, that Bernie Sanders wouldnever get that Partys Presidential nomination, though hehad the highest approval-rating of any politician in thecountry, and far higher than Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden ever had yet the billionaires fooledthe majority of Democratic Party primary voters to thinkthat he was too radical to be able to beat Trump, eventhough, in all polled hypothetical matchups against Trump,Sanders beat Trump by far higher margins thanClinton did, and basicallyequal to whatBiden did, so the electability issue wasfabricated by the billionaires press, in order to get acandidate who was acceptable to the billionaires tobe running against Trump).

A dictatorship functions bynews-suppression and other forms of censorship, even morethan it does by its own lying. It functions by deceit, butthe main way it deceives is by prohibiting the truth to bepublished on any of the billionaires (or other rulinggroups) media including all of the media that havelarge audiences.

News-suppression used to becontrolled by the CIAs OperationMockingbird, in which the owners andtop executives of the major news-media took theCIAs orders and trusted it to represent in the mostreliable way the collective interests of Americaswealthiest persons, so as to weaken those individualsforeign economic competitors. However, gradually, after the1976 Frank-Church-led U.S. Senate hearings into the CIAsdeceptions of the American public, Americas wealthiest the same people whom Wall Street firms also represent relied increasingly upon the nonprofits (foundationsetc.) that they controlled, in order to transfer some ofthis censorship-function over to those nonprofits privatize the censorship function. It was done so that thesame people who controlled the U.S. Government would be ableto continue controlling it and would allow into thebillionaire class new members (mainly technocrats) of thenations aristocracy. This would enhance the U.S.aristocracys collective control over the U.S. Government. There is less need, than before, for the CIA to do thecensoring. (So: the group collectively also constitutesits own gatekeepers. They dont rely onlyupon market-forces in order to determine who is us,and who is them, but any misbehaving member willincreasingly become treated as being one ofthem, and this will be reflected in the groupsnews-media. Its an oligarchy here, and not only anaristocracy. It is an exclusionary aristocracy.)

HughWilfords 2008 THEMIGHTY WURLITZER: How the CIA Played Americadescribed how, starting in the late 1960s, Americassuper-rich began transferring (privatizing) some of theircensorship-functions away from the Government, and intotheir own controlled news-media andnonprofits.

As the former Washington Postreporter Carl Bernstein headlined on 20 October 1977, THECIA AND THE MEDIA, in the wake of the ChurchCommittees report, and described that Senate reportscontext:

During the 1976 investigation of the CIAby the Senate Intelligence Committee, chaired by SenatorFrank Church, the dimensions of the Agencys involvementwith the press became apparent to several members of thepanel, as well as to two or three investigators on thestaff. But top officials of the CIA, including formerdirectors William Colby and George Bush, persuaded thecommittee to restrict its inquiry into the matter and todeliberately misrepresent the actual scope of the activitiesin its final report. The multivolume report contains ninepages in which the use of journalists is discussed indeliberately vague and sometimes misleading terms. It makesno mention of the actual number of journalists who undertookcovert tasks for the CIA. Nor does it adequately describethe role played by newspaper and broadcast executives incooperating with the Agency.

Ever since that time, the CIAs direct control over U.S. media has eroded andbecome privatized largely into the billionairesnonprofits, even while the CIAscontrol over the media in U.S.-allied foreignaristocracies has continued unabated, so as to extendyet further the American empire.

At the top in Americaare the billionaires who donate the most to politicians, andwhose tax-exempt foundations collectively carry out whatused to be the CIAs Operation Mockingbird thecensorship-function.

Two organizations especiallyshould be cited here as leaders of todays Americanbillionaire-class and privatized censorship operations, andany reader here should keep in mind that the largest fundersof these two organizations are themselves only hints at thebillionaires who control each one of them, and, furthermore, since these are only two such organizations, there might beother similar organizations that, perhaps in other ways, areequally important as these two determiners of the news thatthe vast majority of the U.S. public are, and will be,blocked from seeing and hearing (such as this).

The collaborative is focusing first on exposure notification apps that use the Google Apple Exposure Notification system API and will subsequently expand to other testing, tracing and isolation challenges.

Its first initiatives COVID Shield and COVID Green are deployed right now in Canada and Ireland, respectively, and in a few U.S. states.

Both apps are available for other public health agencies and their IT partners able to be customized to their own individual needs and will soon be joined by other open source projects hosted by LFPH, officials said.

THE LARGER TRENDThe goal is for open source developers and others in the tech industry to help public health authorities, many of which, despite years of underinvestment, are now having to scale up their tracking capabilities during the pandemic, say Linux Foundation for Public Health officials.

Linux Foundation Public Health recently hosted a GAEN Symposium focused on theGoogle Apple Exposure Notification system, and plans to host similar events soon, as well as others focused on UI and UX, localization, and privacy and security, it says. More information can be found at lfph.io.

ON THE RECORD"To catalyze this open source development, Linux Foundation Public Health is building a global community of leading technology and consulting companies, public health authorities, epidemiologists and other public health specialists, privacy and security experts, and individual developers," said Dan Kohn, LFPH general manager, in a statement. "While we're excited to launch with two very important open source projects, we think our convening function to enable collaboration to battle this pandemic may be our biggest impact."

"During this grave global crisis, I'm committed to having all parts of the Linux Foundation community support LFPH," added Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin. "Open source provides an architecture for global collaboration and that's what's needed to build, secure, and sustain critical components of our stressed public health infrastructure."
