Chelsea Manning Released After 7 Years in Military Prison …

Pvt. ChelseaManning, the transgender soldier convicted of giving classified government materials to WikiLeaks, was released from a Kansas military prison early Wednesday after serving seven years of her 35-year sentence.

U.S. Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith told the Associated Press that Manning was released from Fort Leavenworth military prison, but that she couldn't provide any further details. Manning tweeted after she was granted clemency that she planned to move to Maryland. The Crescent, Okla., native has an aunt who lives there.

Manning, who was known as Bradley Manning before transitioning in prison, was convicted in 2013 of 20 counts, including six Espionage Act violations, theft and computer fraud. She was acquitted of the most serious charge of aiding the enemy. President Barack Obama granted Manning clemency in his final days in office in January.

Her release comes as news broke Wednesday that a new documentary about the famed whistle-blower is in the works. XY Chelsea is being directed by British filmmaker Tim Travers Hawkins (1000 Voices) and executive produced by Oscar-winner Laura Poitras (Citizenfour, Risk), with the filmmakers having exclusive rights to Manning's story and having had unprecedented access to her team for two years as they fought for her release.

Manning, a former intelligence analyst in Iraq, has acknowledged leaking the materials, which included battlefield video. She said she wanted to expose what she considered to be the U.S. military's disregard for the effects of war on civilians and that she released information she didn't believe would harm the U.S.

Critics said the leaks laid bare some of the nation's most-sensitive secrets and endangered information sources, prompting the State Department to help some of those people move to protect their safety. Several ambassadors were recalled, expelled or reassigned because of embarrassing disclosures.

Manning, who was arrested in 2010, filed a transgender rights lawsuit in prison and attempted suicide twice last year, according to her lawyers.

Obama's decision to commute Manning's sentence to about seven years, including the time she spent locked up before being convicted, drew strong criticism from members of Congress and others, with Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan calling the move "just outrageous."

In a statement last week her first public comments since Obama intervened Manning thanked the former president and said that letters of support from veterans and fellow transgender people inspired her "to work toward making life better for others."

"For the first time, I can see a future for myself as Chelsea," she said. "I can imagine surviving and living as the person who I am and can finally be in the outside world. Freedom used to be something that I dreamed of but never allowed myself to fully imagine."

Her attorneys have said Manning was subjected to violence in prison and argued the military mistreated her by requiring her to serve her sentence in an all-male prison, restricting her physical and mental health care and not allowing her to keep a feminine haircut.

The Department of Defense has repeatedly declined to discuss Manning's treatment in prison.

The Army said Tuesday that Manning would remain on active duty in a special, unpaid status that will legally entitle her to military medical care, along with commissary privileges. An Army spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Jennifer Johnson, said Manning will be on "excess leave" while her court-martial conviction is under appellate review.

Opinion: Artificial intelligence is the hope 2020 needs – Crain’s Cleveland Business

This year is likely to be remembered for the COVID-19 pandemic and for a significant presidential election, but there is a new contender for the most spectacularly newsworthy happening of 2020: the unveiling of GPT-3. As a very rough description, think of GPT-3 as giving computers a facility with words that they have had with numbers for a long time, and with images since about 2012.

The core of GPT-3, which is a creation of OpenAI, an artificial intelligence company based in San Francisco, is a general language model designed to perform autofill. It is trained on uncategorized internet writings, and basically guesses what text ought to come next from any starting point. That may sound unglamorous, but a language model built for guessing with 175 billion parameters 10 times more than previous competitors is surprisingly powerful.

The eventual uses of GPT-3 are hard to predict, but it is easy to see the potential. GPT-3 can converse at a conceptual level, translate language, answer email, perform (some) programming tasks, help with medical diagnoses and, perhaps someday, serve as a therapist. It can write poetry, dialogue and stories with a surprising degree of sophistication, and it is generally good at common sense a typical failing for many automated response systems. You can even ask it questions about God.

Imagine a Siri-like, voice-activated assistant that actually did your intended bidding. It also has the potential to outperform Google for many search queries, which could give rise to a highly profitable company.

GPT-3 does not try to pass the Turing Test by being indistinguishable from a human in its responses. Rather, it is built for generality and depth, even though that means it will serve up bad answers to many queries, at least in its current state. As a general philosophical principle, it accepts that being weird sometimes is a necessary part of being smart. In any case, like so many other technologies, GPT-3 has the potential to rapidly improve.

It is not difficult to imagine a wide variety of GPT-3 spinoffs, or companies built around auxiliary services, or industry task forces to improve the less accurate aspects of GPT-3. Unlike some innovations, it could conceivably generate an entire ecosystem.

There is a notable buzz about GPT-3 in the tech community. One user in the U.K. tweeted: "I just got access to gpt-3 and I can't stop smiling, i am so excited." Venture capitalist Paul Graham noted coyly: "Hackers are fascinated by GPT-3. To everyone else it seems a toy. Pattern seem familiar to anyone?" Venture capitalist and AI expert Daniel Gross referred to GPT-3 as "a landmark moment in the field of AI."

I am not a tech person, so there is plenty about GPT-3 I do not understand. Still, reading even a bit about it fills me with thoughts of the many possible uses.

It is noteworthy that GPT-3 came from OpenAI rather than from one of the more dominant tech companies, such as Alphabet/Google, Facebook or Amazon. It is sometimes suggested that the very largest companies have too much market power but in this case, a relatively young and less capitalized upstart is leading the way. (OpenAI was founded only in late 2015 and is run by Sam Altman).

GPT-3 is also a sign of the underlying health and dynamism of the Bay Area tech world, and thus of the U.S. economy. The innovation came to the U.S. before China and reflects the power of decentralized institutions.

Like all innovations, GPT-3 involves some dangers. For instance, if prompted by descriptive ethnic or racial words, it can come up with unappetizing responses. One can also imagine that a more advanced version of GPT-3 would be a powerful surveillance engine for written text and transcribed conversations. Furthermore, it is not an obvious plus if you can train your software to impersonate you over email. Imagine a world where you never know who you are really talking to "Is this a verified email conversation?" Still, the hope is that protective mechanisms can at least limit some of these problems.

We have not quite entered the era where "Skynet goes live," to cite the famous movie phrase about an AI taking over (and destroying) the world. But artificial intelligence does seem to have taken a major leap forward. In an otherwise grim year, this is a welcome and hopeful development. Oh, and if you would like to read more, here is an article about GPT-3 written by GPT-3.

How Artificial Intelligence Can Be Used In Public Transport- Will People Be Able To Commute Safely After Covid-19? – Inventiva

As it has been observed that many cities are forced to go back to lockdown again with the rise of the number of cases of coronavirus. Due to the emerging lockdowns, public transport will be facing new challenges in the days ahead. They have to avoid overcrowding buses and trains to prevent the virus from spreading ensuring to maintain the overall number of passengers to sustain the system. Meanwhile, the commuters are temporarily returning to public transport but it can be used widely if they see it as a safe way to reach their destinations.

According to the safety measure rules to protect against Covid-19 are to maintain social distancing. Overcrowding poses the risk to the major transmission of coronavirus and other diseases. Therefore, there is a need to flatten the typical morning and evening peak hours of passenger numbers. With the lack of passengers, this means the public transport companies have to put relatively frequent trains and buses all day long rather than back-to-back transport rush.

An all-day service provides special benefits and reduces passenger density resulting in social distancing. This also benefits drivers as they are less likely to change their shifts and passengers can rely on fairly frequent buses all day long. However, with the surge in the cases of Covid-19 infection, it can anytime affect the ridership demand. This can happen so quickly that transport companies wont have that much time to prepare and adjust. Therefore, there is a need to maintain the flexibility to reach within days or even hours and implements the changes that usually take months of preparation. Here is when digital technologies like Artificial Intelligence comes in the view.

Artificial Intelligence can help in maintaining a large amount of data the level of passengers demand, number of drivers on duty, availability of buses and trains, maximum hours driver can work between breaks, as well as the length of each break- and many more which are needed to be taken care of.

With the help of some algorithms, scenarios can be created. They can change the routes and travel times, the update on the schedules will be updated automatically. They can compare the revenue and costs based on different scenarios. It will help to take steps quickly as the circumstances changes, be it lockdown or staggered shifts, like quickly putting extra trains and buses if needed.

AI can also help to solve the unmanageable transport problems. For example, if any transport company wants to add 5% more trips to get passenger numbers over their journey. But they have 14% fewer drivers at hand. It seems impossible to handle. However, AI-driven software can found a way to add more trips with fewer drivers by optimizing the schedule and extending the average shifts by 45 minutes, and providing a necessary break time.

The Artificial Intelligence system that is added to buses is mainly to operate as quickly as possible by providing extra buses when needed to maintain social distancing. Though it sounds simple, it is not. It requires planning in the form of complex algorithms. These algorithms will generate alternative scenarios to figure out which part of the transportation network is needed to be modified to ensure extra vehicles and drivers to be available.

However, transport providers have to make sure that people reach their destination on time even if the schedule changes in a short period. The increase in time duration can lead to unhappy customers. This does not sound any good for business.

There is no saying what transit demand will be there in the upcoming months but cooperating with local government and private institutes to flatten peak hours, using AI for different scenarios management, and monitoring the impact whenever the service changes, will somehow help transportation providers to move ahead. This will actually help the general public to commute safely during the lockdown. Implementing such measures will give public transportation a move towards digitalization.

Trust Is A Keystone Of Digital Transformation – Forbes

Reputable and trustworthy authentication is a keystone of any digital transformation project. But ... [+] for businesses to really make progress and successfully move towards remote working, passwords need to be made a thing of the past.

Even in non-Covid times, digital transformation in any organization isnt easy. Weve all seen how the pandemic has drastically accelerated the willingness of, and the need for, organizations to embrace new technology, but it has also added complexity.

All of a sudden huge swathes of the workforce are working remotely, and businesses have had to react quickly to support a new, more remote and more flexible workforce. Aside from the various technical and logistical hurdles, many organizations are finding their biggest challenge is one of trust. With staff no longer physically present, how do you know your employees are who they say they are?

Creating trust in challenging times

I recently spoke to Andrew Shikiar, Executive Director and CMO, at the FIDO Alliance, who believes the answer lies in how organizations authenticate employees and end-users. And by solving this issue of trust, they will not only be able to move to a more remote model, but gain the confidence they need to push ahead with digital transformation projects.

Andrew says: You can't have digital transformation without security. What if you can't trust anyone you don't know? It undermines the whole ability to have digital transformation at scale. And to have security at scale, it needs to be easy. Fundamentally, technology needs to be easy for people to use.

FIDOs approach to addressing this problem revolves around a major shift in the way people authenticate themselves. In practice, this would mean users logging-in to devices, cloud-based platforms or online services using a biometric signature, like a fingerprint or their face, without the need for a password.

Farewell to the trusty password?

Phasing out passwords may sound counter-intuitive, but that is precisely what the FIDO Alliance was created to do. Its members include many of the worlds leading companies like Apple, American Express, Google, Microsoft and Samsung, who all recognize the pitfalls of the formerly trusty password.

Andrew explains: The traditional way of authenticating is password-based, but the odds are that [your password has] been stolen, it's sitting on the dark web already, or if not, someone can phish you through a replay attack over 80% of data breaches are caused by passwords, either because the password is stolen or something has been left open.

FIDO claims to solve this problem by moving away from the current dependency on server-side credentials, to one that authenticates users locally from a device in their possession, such as their PC or smartphone. Public key cryptography then enables the device to mediate the authentication process with the server.

Are biometrics the answer?

There will likely be many who are uncomfortable with the idea of providing biometrics to any private organization, let alone their employer. But due to the way the FIDO standards work, with data stored locally on the device as opposed to a server, it cannot be accessed by anybody other than the user. The bigger barrier to adoption may well be that large enterprises are unable to replace passwords in legacy systems that rely on them. But that does not prevent them from adding an extra layer of authentication, like that provided by FIDO or another form of second factor authentication, which could effectively remove the need to use a password for many employees in most circumstances.

As with any digital transformation project, you ultimately want to make life easier for employees, while increasing efficiency and productivity. Passwords were designed to be simple but, as we have all likely experienced, they have become incredibly cumbersome, leading many to take short-cuts. So any new authentication method, biometric or otherwise, needs to be simple and easy to adopt. When youre in the midst of a major transformation project, the last thing you need is an added complication or a new process for people to learn on top of all of the critical changes the business is making.

Establishing trust

The pandemic has forced organizations to adapt to new ways of working, and there are certainly opportunities for them to improve the way they operate. But the pandemic has also introduced complexity and raised issues around trust. As business leaders adapt to the current circumstances and plan for the future, more effective ways of establishing trust and authenticating employees could become increasingly common. But its vital that they find solutions in keeping with the overall aims of their digital transformation project - make it simple to use, make it more efficient, and make it more effective.

Bitcoin applications used to archive hacked tweets – CoinGeek

During the recent Twitter hack where top influencers on the platform seemingly shilled a common digital currency scam, two Bitcoin SV applications demonstrated a powerful use case.

Ark is an app that is still in closed beta, but has a feature where it will automatically archive tweets to the Bitcoin SV ledger if you summon their account via the syntax:

@arktobitcoin thread

The tweet replied to will display on Arks in-app Shared feed, as well as be timestamped on the ledger:

This feature was originally intended to archive long tweet threads so that users could read them later but became quite useful in this catastrophic event for Twitter.

Archiving tweets on-chain was an initial feature of Twetch and was also heavily used during this incident. Users recorded links and screenshots of almost all the hacked tweets, demonstrating the accountability feature of the Bitcoin ledger.

Slowly but surely users are becoming aware of how the established technology platforms manipulate what their users see via algorithms and biased moderation. This event could be the final straw as the hack explicitly targeted Twitters verified accounts, colloquially known as Blue checkmarks.

The entire point of this feature was to communicate to users that these accounts have been vetted by Twitter to be authentic, yet hackers effortlessly promoted a scam from top followed accounts, leading to theft of ~$120,000 in BTC. Naturally, some users would fall for it, as they see power couple Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, top financial investors, athletes, musicians, and politicians claiming to give back to their communities because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This situation seemingly could not get worse for Twitter when screenshots of features that appear to allow shadow-banning of users were leaked online. The leak hammers home that Twitter possesses absolute control and bias over what their users view.

These social media platforms are holding too much valuable data in private serverswhich have led to the formation of honeypots for hackers and potential for abuse of power and corruption. Twitter has revealed itself to be playing God with their customers timelines, asserting they know what is best for the users as a former Twitter executive states in the timestamped link below:

These circumstances are enabled due to the flawed security model of the Internet, where the large tech companies have formed central hubs that have wide influence. Such influence, that once hackers compromise one of these points of failure, they obtain complete control.

Comparing the security of the Internet to Bitcoin where only the user has control of their keys and accounts, such a situation becomes near impossible. Each account must be compromised individuallycontrolling the back end of a company like Twetch or Ark would not yield control over all customers accounts.

The amount of disinformation, fake news and media manipulation during a tumultuous 2020 is quite overt. Dogpiling on to the situation are companies like Twitter, Facebook and Google who leverage their power to further sow confusion, hate and divisiveness throughout their platforms because not only do they believe what is morally superior, they profit from it all.

This situation seemingly is primed for alternative solutions that Bitcoin can provide, where now tools in the users control are demonstrating their effectiveness against abuses of power.

Rocket Software Beefs Up Security in the Latest D3 Release – Database Trends and Applications

Rocket Software is releasing Rocket D3 10.3.2 with a plethora of security, performance, and integration enhancements.

Version 10.3.2 has encryption enhancements plus SSL connectivity so users can securely share. For encryption, 10.3.2 provides tools to secure both data at rest and data in transit.

Other security updates include:

Version 10.3.2 contains enhancements across the dataserver engine including query, run-time, and SQL for a better end-user experience. Additionally integrations with Red Hat Linux, MV integration sever and Windows server 2019.

An MV workstation with access to D3 was also added to allow remote workers to print from their home or field office.

With this shift to working from home environment, this update is really cool, said Brian Cram, technical support engineer, Rocket Software. User defined functions is also a big update.

Encryption at the field level, rather than at the file level, offers a performance benefit, especially for large files. The architecture allows D3 to utilize more than 4GB of memory, taking advantage of greater addressing space and improved file caching in memory.

The update allows users to easily extend D3 application functionality, as well as attract and retain new development talent with Python native language support.

D3 10.3.1 allows BASIC developers to leverage the Python Open Source library of hundreds of thousands of solutions for quickly adding new features to improve your application.

The ability to call into D3 from Python in version 10.3.2 completes the bidirectional support of Rocket D3 Python for better integration, allowing Python developers to access data and existing business rules that are stored in the D3 database environment.

We have a very loyal customer base and theyve been really appreciative of our MVU sessions, said Chris Rizza, product manager at Rocket Software.

Customers that have been gravitating toward these virtual workshops were clamoring for the Python integration to attract new developers, according to Cram.

Its a great way to prevent the talent gap, said Richard Berman, CEO, VerbFactory.
