Figure Out the Threats Imposed by Cryptocurrency Exchange Software and Steps to Minimize Its Impact – Communal News

Cryptocurrency exchanges have captured the imagination of the digital world with their fast settlement of transactions, distributed ledger technology, and a wide range of tradable assets.

Though it suits speculators in a better way and possesses large-scale uncertainty, the demand for such platforms is becoming increasingly high.

Since it deals with a huge volume of transactions and a large number of funds, the exchanges have to comply with KYC (Know Your Customer) guidelines and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) laws issued by regulatory authorities from time to time.

As competitiveness rises, there will be a lot of risks associated with such exchanges.

Some of the major risks that hinder the operations of a Cryptocurrency Exchange are

Some steps to overcome the impact of the above risks are

Dont handover private keys to third parties Giving private keys to a wallet provider will lead to a compromise in accessing the platform. Ensure that a majority of funds are under the users control like loss of private keys means that their cryptocurrencies vanished forever.

Diversify your funds across different exchanges Users must allot their funds across exchanges to protect themselves from a single point of failure. Even if one exchange happens to wind up their operations due to data breach, it means that the user will not lose all his holdings at one stroke.

Follow all the above guidelines to keep your Cryptocurrency exchange software running in full swing.

If censorship were to return, could todays writers learn from their Victorian counterparts? – Scroll.in

In an open letter published in Harpers Magazine, 152 writers, including JK Rowling and Margaret Atwood, claim that a climate of censoriousness is pervading liberal culture, the latest contribution to an ongoing debate about freedom of speech online.

As we grapple with this issue in a society where social media allows us all to share extreme views, the Victorian writers offer a precedent for thinking differently about language and how we use it to get our point across. How limits of acceptability and literary censorship, for the Victorians, inspired creative ways of writing that foregrounded sensitivity and demanded thoughtfulness.

There are very few cases of books being banned in the Victorian era. But books were censored or refused because of moral prudishness, and publishers often objected to attacks on the upper classes their book-buying audience. Writer and poet Thomas Hardys first novel, The Poor Man and the Lady, was never published because the publisher Alexander Macmillan felt that his portrayal of the upper classes was wholly dark not a ray of light visible to relieve the darkness.

However, more common than publishers turning down books was the refusal of circulating libraries to distribute them. These institutions were an integral part of literary consumerism during the Victorian period as the main means of distributing books.

Most influential of these was Charles Mudies Select Library, established in 1842. Mudies library was select because he would only circulate books that were suitable for middle-class parents to read aloud to their daughters without causing embarrassment.

This shaped how publishers commissioned and what writers could get away with. Victorian literary censorship, while limiting, managed to inspire writers to develop more creative and progressive ways to get their points across.

George Eliots publisher, John Blackwood, criticised her work for showing people as they really were rather than giving an idealistic picture. He was particularly uncomfortable when Eliot focused on the difficulties of working-class life.

In Mr Gilfils Love Story (1857), Eliots description of the orphan girl, Caterina, being subjected to soap-and-water raised Blackwoods censorious hackles:

I do not recollect of any passage that moved my critical censorship unless it might be the allusion to dirt in common with your heroine.

As well as dirt, alcohol consumption was also seen as an unwanted reminder of working class problems. Again in Mr Gifils Love Story, Eliot describes how the eponymous clergyman enjoys an occasional sip of gin-and-water.

However, knowing Blackwoods views and anticipating she may cause offence galvanised Eliot to state her case directly to the reader within the text itself. She qualifies her unromantic depiction of Mr Gilfil with an address to her lady readers:

Here I am aware that I have run the risk of alienating all my refined lady readers, and utterly annihilating any curiosity they may have felt to know the details of Mr Gilfils love-story let me assure you that Mr Gilfils potations of gin-and-water were quite moderate. His nose was not rubicund; on the contrary, his white hair hung around a pale and venerable face. He drank it chiefly, I believe, because it was cheap; and here I find myself alighting on another of the Vicars weaknesses, which, if I cared to paint a flattering portrait rather than a faithful one, I might have chosen to suppress.

Here, literary censorship enriches Eliots writing. Eliots refusal to suppress her work becomes part of the story and reinforces her agenda to portray Mr Gilfil as he really is, a vicar who mixes gin with water because he is poor.

As well as inspiring narrative additions, censorship was also powerful because of what was left out of a text. One of Hardys most loved books, Tess of the DUrbervilles, highlights the crimes of sexual harassment in the workplace and of rape. Because Hardy had to be careful about the way that he presented the sexual abuse of Tess, his descriptions were very subtle. This is how he portrays the scene where Tess is sexually assaulted by her employer, Alec DUrberville:

The obscurity was now so great that he could see absolutely nothing but a pale nebulousness at his feet, which represented the white muslin figure he had left upon the dead leaves. Everything else was blackness alike. DUrberville stooped; and heard a gentle regular breathing. He knelt, and bent lower, till her breath warmed his face, and in a moment his cheek was in contact with hers. She was sleeping soundly, and upon her eyelashes there lingered tears.

The influence of censorship meant that Hardy could not describe this scene in graphic detail. Instead, his depiction is more sensitive and thoughtful. Hardy does not dehumanise Tess by depicting her as a sexual object to entertain the reader.

By focusing on Tesss gentle regular breathing and the poignant image of her tear-stained eyelashes, Hardy avoids gratuitous depictions of violence while at the same time making us painfully aware of the injustice she has suffered. This makes his portrayal of Tess more powerful and poignant. It can be argued that this was achieved because of the limits placed on his writing, not in spite of them.

In these instances, we can see how literary censorship influenced writers to tread more carefully upon difficult territory. It made them think about whether including violence or socially controversial depictions were necessary or gratuitous to their narratives.

For Hardy and Eliot, censorship and its limits inspired creativity, sensitivity and thoughtfulness. These examples can provide food for thought in the debate today about free speech and censorship. As Hardy and Eliot wrestled with as they wrote, can things be said differently and, in some cases, do they need to be said at all?

Stephanie Meek, PhD Candidate in English Literature, University of Reading.

Power consumption can explode with increasing use of artificial intelligence – ThePrint

Text Size:A- A+

San Francisco: The increasing use of artificial intelligence is going to extract a heavy price in power unless the chip industry steps up and heads that off, according to one of the industrys biggest companies.

Data centers are on course to consume 15% of the worlds electricity by 2025, according to Applied Materials Inc., the worlds largest maker of chip equipment. Those giant warehouses of computers currently suck in about 2%, the company said.

AI has the potential to change everything, said Applied Materials Chief Executive Officer Gary Dickerson speaking in a prerecorded remote keynote for the industrys Semicon West conference. But AI has an Achilles heel that unless addressed will prevent it from reaching its true potential. That Achilles heel is power consumption. Training neural networks is incredibly energy-intensive when done with the technology thats available today.

A flood of new devices are getting internet connections, generating more data and increasing the need for more computing power with artificial intelligence to make sense of that new information. Chipmakers, most of which use Applieds machinery, have made their electronic components more energy efficient but not enough, according to Dickerson. The industry needs to come up with new custom designs tailored for AI processing and new ways of connecting those chips, he said.

Widths on the tiny circuits that give chips their functions are measured in billionths of a meter. But to move and store data quickly they require large amounts of power. An Intel Corp. Xeon processor may draw more than 200 watts, as much as an old-fashioned portable tube TV. Put thousands of those processors in close proximity and couple them with all of the other components needed to make a server and the electricity drain adds up.

Applieds CEO made a promise to reduce the companys power footprint and to innovate on the basics of manufacturing and materials to help his customers make more efficient components. One example he gave Tuesday involves a technique for growing tungsten atoms in a vacuum to make more efficient connections between parts of the chip.

Applied will move to 100% renewable energy and cut its carbon footprint by 50% over the next 10 years, Dickerson pledged. Even relatively simple changes in practices can help, he said. Flying an engineer from the U.S. to Asia and back generates about 2 metric tons of carbon dioxide. Applied has learned during the Covid-19 pandemic how to improve remote research and development and customer support, he said, making fewer such trips necessary. Bloomberg

A Staggering 21TB of Source Code Were Just Buried in The Arctic For an Unknown Future – ScienceAlert

If doomsday comes, know this: precautions have been taken. On an isolated Arctic archipelago, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault aka Norway's 'Doomsday Vault' holds over 1 million seed samples in a fortress-like bunker designed to be the most invulnerable seed bank in the world.

Svalbard protects more than just seeds, though. On the same remote mountain, an abandoned coal mine now exists as another vital safe-house: the Arctic World Archive, preserving the world's data of today for an uncertain tomorrow. And the facility just received a contribution that's truly mind-boggling in scope.

GitHub, often billed as the world's largest host of open source code, has successfully transported all of its active public code repositories (as of February this year) to the Arctic World Archive, as part of the company's ongoing efforts to establish the GitHub Arctic Code Vault.

(GitHub)

"Our mission is to preserve open source software for future generations by storing your code in an archive built to last a thousand years," Julia Metcalf, GitHub's director of strategic programs, explains on the company's blog.

The project, first announced last year, already saw one shipment to Svalbard in late 2019, with a deposit of 6,000 of the platform's most significant repositories of open source code.

The new shipment, painstakingly managed during the shutdowns and border closures of the coronavirus pandemic, goes even further, preserving a massive haul amounting to 21 terabytes of data, written onto 186 reels of a digital archival film called piqlFilm.

This purpose-built media designed to last for 500 years, with simulations suggesting it should last twice as long is now stored 250 metres deep, in a steel-walled container inside a sealed chamber in the Arctic World Archive.

The film, composed of silver halides on polyester, looks like a miniaturised print of QR codes, except every frame squeezes in some 8.8 million microscopic pixels, and each reel runs for almost 1 kilometre (about 3,500 ft), such is the gargantuan size of the data being stored.

(GitHub/YouTube)

"It can withstand extreme electromagnetic exposure and has undergone extensive longevity and accessibility testing," the piql company claims.

It's hoped that this extremely long-life media in conjunction with the Archive's natural isolation and engineered security will give the world's open source software the best chance of seeing a distant future where it may one day be needed by upcoming generations.

"It is easy to envision a future in which today's software is seen as a quaint and long-forgotten irrelevancy, until an unexpected need for it arises," the GitHub Archive website explains.

"Like any backup, the GitHub Archive Program is also intended for currently unforeseeable futures as well."

In those unforeseeable futures, it's hard to know exactly what future humans will make of the archive's coded contents, or how they might be able to access and use them.

For that reason, the vault will also contain a separate, human-readable reel, called the Tech Tree, explaining the technical history and cultural context of the archive's contents.

The Tech Tree won't just throw future humans into the world of 21st century open source code, but serve as a primer for what these programs are, and what kind of technology they run on.

"It will also include works which explain the many layers of technical foundations that make software possible: microprocessors, networking, electronics, semiconductors, and even pre-industrial technologies," Metcalf explains.

"This will allow the archive's inheritors to better understand today's world and its technologies, and may even help them recreate computers to use the archived software."

VERIFY: The Fourth Amendment has nothing to do with wearing masks at a grocery store – WBIR.com

If a medical condition prevents you from wearing a mask, and a business employee asks about your medical condition, is that a violation the Fourth Amendment?

WASHINGTON D.C., DC QUESTION:

If a medical condition prevents someone from wearing a mask, and a business employee asks about his/her medical condition, is that a violation of that person's Fourth Amendment right?

Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution

Erwin Chemerinsky- Dean and Professor of Law at University of California Berkeley School of Law

Robert Dinerstein- Acting Dean at American University Washington College of Law and Director of the Disability Rights Law Clinic

Several posts going around claim that a business can't legally ask you about your medical condition, because that would violate the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

So we're verifying if the Fourth Amendment bans a private business from asking about medical conditions.

Our Verify researchers contacted Erwin Chemerinsky with Berkeley School of Law and Robert Dinerstein with American University's Washington College of Law and their Disability Rights Law Clinic.

Boiled down, the Fourth Amendment is your right to privacy, and protects a person against unreasonable searches and seizures.

The Fourth Amendment only applies to the government, just like the First Amendment only limits what the government can do with regard to freedom of speech," Chemerinsky said. "The Constitution is meant to limit government action, and it doesn't restrict what private businesses, private universities or private entities can do."

Chemerinsky also said that simply asking a personal question is not considered a search.

Robert Dinerstein agreed.

"The Fourth Amendment really has no applicability here," he said. "The relevant law is the Americans with Disabilities Act."

So we can Verify, experts said the Fourth Amendment has nothing to do with wearing a mask at a business.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, it's illegal to discriminate against a person because of a disability. So in a situation where someone says they can't wear a mask because of a medical condition, Dinerstein suggests taking them at their word and offering a reasonable accommodation.

You should take the person at his or her word at that point, I think, and it's a whole lot easier and less intrusive, Dinerstein said. Who walks around with medical documentation when you want to go to the grocery store?

What Are The Limitations Of AutoML? – Analytics India Magazine

AutoML is no longer a new term. Since Google released its first AutoML product in 2018, discussions around this technology have been quite prominent. Some regard it as a weapon to achieve general artificial intelligence, while others deem it to be exaggerated. But what everyone agrees on is that AutoML does have extraordinary significance in realising AI advancements.

Using machine learning to process data has increased revenue and efficiency for enterprises. Big tech companies have hundreds of millions of data, which is humanly impossible to process. Machine learning is, therefore, being used to build complex models.

Over the past few years, automatic machine learning algorithms have been used in areas including image recognition, natural language processing, speech recognition, interactive AutoML optimisation, semi-supervised learning, reinforcement learning and more. But it comes with its own set of challenges.

Business Challenges For AutoML

AutoML faces problems such as data and model application. For example, high-quality labelled data is far from enough, and data inconsistencies during offline data analysis will cause bad effects. In addition, teams need to do automatic machine learning processing of unstructured and semi-structured data, which is technically difficult.

Furthermore, the current AutoML system optimization objectives are fixed. Often realistic problems are a combination of multiple objectives, such as the need to make subtle differences between decision-making and cost. With this kind of multi-objective exploration, people have limited ways to effectively judge before the results are obtained.

Such a situation is difficult to support in the current AutoML. The actual business may have customised requirements for the actual machine learning process, for example, for which only a certain type of data processing tool can be used. Such requirements cannot be met in the current black box AutoML solution. Whether it is effective or efficient, AutoML has a lot of room for improvement.

Explainability

While automated machines can find solutions, it may not necessarily be what the user wants. The user may want an explainable model. In fact, experts say explainability itself has great uncertainty, because everyones understanding is different, and it has a great relationship with personal judgment. It is even more challenging to make the model explainable.

Organisations have to work on advancing the development of standards related to explainable machine learning. AutoML can give the results, and experts judge whether they meet their own interpretable and explainable standards and consistency.

AutoML In Dynamic Environment

Another point worth paying attention is that it is more difficult to perform AutoML in a dynamic environment than in a static environment, as the environments keep dynamically changing. Dealing effectively with dynamic environments is an open issue in the academic community, and researchers are continually exploring the field. For dynamic feature learning, companies will need to adapt to changes in data faster, detect distribution changes and automatically adapt to different types of models, etc.

The current mainstream computing frameworks (such as Tensorflow, PyTorch, etc.) are only optimised for single machine learning model training. Companies need to work on redesigning the underlying computing architecture for automatic machine learning, providing configuration evaluation and optimisation for multiple model learning. For dynamic environment learning, it needs to be able to automatically perform model adaptation based on changes in the data distribution.

Security and Privacy

Security is the other hot research topic of AutoML. In terms of the security of AutoML, organisations are exploring different technical solutions for different scenarios, such as automatic machine learning for privacy protection, automatic multi-party machine learning, automatic federation, etc.

But the current implementation lacks the support of laws, regulations and industry standards. Organisations need to promote the establishment and improvement of standards such as IEEE standards for federated learning and secure multi-party computing.

Final Thoughts

The AutoML technology has now been implemented in many scenarios, but the challenge is to implement it on a large scale and in more industries. The obstacle is that technological breakthroughs of AutoML require deeper research on the theoretical and algorithmic levels.

Companies are experiencing many iterations of automated machine learning. It has evolved from the earliest two-category expansion to multi-category and regression, from structured data to unstructured data such as images and videos, is used in automatic supervised learning that covers low-quality data, and in automatic multi-party machine learning that protects privacy. In theory, researchers are exploring the boundaries of the AutoML algorithm, because there is no general algorithm that can solve all problems.
