Mystery surrounds what happened to a young woman who was found in a critical condition 50km from her home six days after disappearing.

Jessica Goodwin, from the US state of Arizona, vanished on January 11 after informing work she would not be coming in, Fox News reported.

The 28-year-old was last spotted on CCTV footage leaving a car wash in her white Volkswagen Jetta, the last place where she used her credit card.

Her vehicle was later found abandoned near the car wash.

Detectives traced her phone records and eventually found her in the rural Giva River Indian Community, 50km from her home on the outskirts of Phoenix.

She was rushed to hospital in a severe state of dehydration, Pinal County Sheriffs Office said.

Her condition has since improved, police say.

While police have remained tight-lipped over the matter, they described her disappearance as abnormal.

Authorities are yet to make any arrests in relation to the matter, while according to Fox 10, police do not suspect foul play at this stage.

A friend told Fox 10 her disappearance was out of character, especially as she left her pet dog unattended at home.

If she does go somewhere to clear her mind, shell take her dog for sure, he said.

Its completely unlike her.

In reference to finding Ms Goodwin alive, Sheriff Mark Lamb said on Facebook it was the outcome we have all been hoping and praying for.

Investigations are ongoing.
