MOSCOW air defences have been put on alert as Russia prepares for a possible war with the US.

Air defence units in the Moscow region were put on alert as part of a snap combat readiness check, the Russian Defence Ministry said.

More than 1,000 troops and 100 weapons systems were involved in the dry run for World War 3.

The drill which comes after Russian nuclear bombers were intercepted near Alaska involved defence systems designed to protect the capital from US cruise and ballistic missile strikes.

The troops also practiced thwarting covert attacks.

Russia has warned the world is just a "hair's breadth" from an apocalyptic nuclear war.

Units of air defence missile were put on combat alert

The exercise was carried out under battlefield conditions as the threat of Russia being dragged into a war looms.

A Defence Ministry spokesman said: "Units of air defence missile and radio-technical forces made a march to their deployment positions and were put on combat alert.

"During the redeployment, the personnel practiced thwarting sabotage and reconnaissance groups."

The drill involved S-400 and S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems, Pantsyr-S missile launchers and radars.

Vladimir Putin hoped relations with the West would improve when his pal Donald Trump was elected US president in November.

But Trump fired 59 cruise missiles at Putins mate, Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, earlier this month.
