RANDOM: gymnastic rips, bumps, bruises, bites, and other battle scars
Our cyber buddies have noticed that Starly #39;s shins frequently seem bruised and we #39;ve been asked a few times if it relates to gymnastics. The answer is yes and no. She #39;s always been a climber who loves heights and has generally preferred being upside down since birth - so I #39;ve become very blase about her bumps and bruises. Starly herself takes pride in rips on her hands but little notice of anything else. (Rips are caused by friction on bars - especially on metal bars). Gymnasts don #39;t generally start wearing hand guards until after they get very consistent kips so Starly has no guards and generally relies on taped hands to train when she has rips. Gymnasts are a special kind of nuts when you think about the pain they routinely accept (and I mean that in the nicest possible way!!). I think the discoloration you might notice on Starly #39;s legs is actually mostly patches of eczema and/or old eczema scars (the eczema is reasonably well controlled but only fully heals when she #39;s in the sun a lot. Golden Boy and I get much worse eczema). Starly had a minor whiplash (landing a tramp front sault on her feet a little hard but keeping it secret from coach so aggravating it to serious injury by the end of the night) in January this year - which caused huge incapacity right up until May. And of course she hurt her neck badly in August (scary footage amongst our earliest you tube posts) but recovered astonishingly quickly from that one.
