Police have charged a Sydney man with a stabbing and a sexual assault after DNA allegedly linked two cold case crimes dating back almost a decade.

In July 2004 a 39-year-old woman walking in Bankstown was hit from behind and allegedly dragged into a nearby reserve and sexually assaulted.

She suffered a fractured shoulder and other injuries.

Then in September 2006 a 34-year-old employee at a butcher's shop in Auburn was hit from behind by a man who entered the shop through a rear door.

The worker was repeatedly stabbed in the face and upper body and his wallet was taken. His injuries included a fractured nose.

Police recovered his wallet and a knife nearby.

In August 2007 the Forensic Biology Unit told investigators there was a match in the DNA samples retrieved from both crime scenes.

A call to Crime Stoppers late last year encouraged police to probe further and on Monday they arrested a 30-year-old Wiley Park man.

He was charged with aggravated sex assault inflicting actual bodily harm, and robbery armed with an offensive weapon to cause wounding.
