Ohio sports betting apps and in-person locations will go live Jan. 1, 2023, the Ohio Casino Control Commission announced Wednesday.

It follows the commissions announcement earlier this month that legal betting would start close to or around the states self-imposed Jan. 1, 2023 deadline.

This means the state will miss out on betting taxes during most of the NFL season, though it will be online in time for the Super Bowl one of the biggest betting days of the year.

Ohio legalized sports betting in 2021, when Gov. Mike DeWine signed off on a bill to allow up to 46 different online betting operators under a 10% tax.It also allows for physical bets at casinos, racinos and professional sports arenas. Restaurants and bars may also install betting kiosks.

The application period begins June 15.

Fubo Gaming and Bally Bet have already partnered with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Brownsand are expected to run sportsbooks in the state. Additional operators will be announced in the coming months.

Prospective applicants must give the commission responsible gaming plans, geolocation procedures and equipment testing procedures by November 2 (60 days before the start date).

Every operator with a license will be able to launch at once, making it the largest simultaneous gaming launch in U.S. history, according to the commission.
