Tennessee Firearms Freedom Act Re-Emerges

NASHVILLE, TN (WKRN)--Local Second Amendment advocates are once again trying to ban federal gun laws.

The bill called the Tennessee Firearms Freedom Act stalled last year in a state senate committee, but the head of the group pushing the measure says, "It will pass if it can get to the House and floor."

John Harris, who is executive director of the Tennessee Firearms Association told WKRN,"This statute would say that state of Tennessee reserves to itself the authority to regulate guns in this state, and to the federal government you have no such authority."

Harris said other key part of the bill include making a civil rights violation if the federal government would try to enforce any gun law, and authorizing the state attorney general to take action against violators.

He indicated the bill is as much about the Tenth Amendment as it is the Second Amendment, citing "federal government encroachments" in other areas like education or health care.

"Your big debates on public policy when you look at them are really tenth amendment declarations in each of those areas saying to the federal government you have no right to tell us what to do in this state," added Harris.
