Joe Judge goes on bizarre, dubious rant after Giants post worst passing performance of the century – Yahoo Sports

Posted: January 5, 2022 at 8:44 am

The New York Giants lost their fifth straight game by double digits on Sunday, and this was the ugliest of them all.

Facing the 5-10 Chicago Bears, a team widely expected to fire their head coach after this season, the Giants weren't just bad on offense, they were historically putrid. With starting quarterback Daniel Jones shut down for the season, back-up Mike Glennon finished the day 4-of-11 for 24 passing yards, two interceptions and four fumbles (two lost).

Of Glennon's four completed passes, two gained yards. Throw in the four sacks allowed by the Giants offensive line for a total loss of 34 yards, and the Giants passing game gained a grand total of -10 yards.

That is the fewest passing yards gained in a single NFL game since the then-San Diego Chargers "gained" -19 yards in 1998 (Ryan Leaf was involved), according to Stathead. It's also the first time since 2009 that a team finished in the red.

The Giants ended up losing 29-3. They went into the game with a clear handicap, but teams have lost their starting quarterbacks before and, you know, gained positive yards. Between that performance through the air, an embarrassing gaffe on a kickoff return and some other odd decisions, Giants head coach Joe Judge had plenty to answer for after the game.

Then he took things in an even weirder direction.

When asked by a reporter why fans should have faith that he is the person who can right the ship for 4-12 Giants, Judge reportedly launched into a 10-minute rant in which he claimed, among other things, that he frequently receives calls from players who were on the Giants last year and are now making more money playing elsewhere.

The apparent consensus among these players is they really wish they were back in New York. You can read the full transcript here, including this claim:

"I can tell you were got more players here who are going to be free agents next year, all right, theyre coming in my office every day begging me to come back. I know that. I know that. I know players that we coached last year still calling me twice a week telling me how much they wish they were still here even though theyre getting paid more somewhere else. Ok? So I know weve got the right foundational pieces right there. "

Story continues

Now, we're not ones to openly doubt an NFL head coach clearly going through some things, but "NFL players openly saying they want less money" is the kind of claim that can't just be passed along without any scrutiny.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell was one person who sat down and questioned if what Judge was saying was true, and the results were ... interesting.

Basically, of the 34 players who appeared on the Giants active roster last year and are no longer part of the team this year, the only player who could fit Judge's description of having signed elsewhere for more money is defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, who left the Giants this offseason on a two-year, $22 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings.

So unless Judge fudged his criteria a bit or Tomlinson is the kind of person to make multiple calls to an ex-head coach in the middle of the season, Judge's claims seem to be along the lines of a girlfriend from Canada or a dad who works at Nintendo.

Making the Giants' free fall all the more interesting is the report that Judge (and Jones) will be steering the Giants in the 2022 season as well. That was reported two weeks ago, before two more embarrassing losses for the Giants.

There is a very good chance Judge's job security is tied to general manager Dave Gettleman's job security, and both keep looking worse as New York looks overwhelmed on a weekly basis with little hope for the future. Even Scott Simonson, who played for Gettleman when he was the GM of the Carolina Panthers and then joined him with the Giants, is publicly teeing off on his old boss.

This could very well be an offseason of change for the Giants. If it is, the calls Judge gets could suddenly become very real.

NFL betting: Ja’Marr Chase becomes new favorite to win offensive rookie of the year – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 8:44 am

Entering Week 17, there wasn't much talk about who would win offensive rookie of the year. Mac Jones was a -500 favorite to win the award and it seemed all but locked up. It would have taken something magical to pry the award out of the hands of Jones.

The Cincinnati Bengals had a massive come-from-behind win to knock off the Kansas City Chiefs. As a result of the win, the Bengals clinched the AFC North. The main reason for the win? Ja'Marr Chase posting a ridiculous stat-line that featured 11 receptions on 12 targets, 266 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Following the performance, Chase is now a -200 favorite to win offensive rookie of the year.

There are only two players still on the board at BetMGM for offensive rookie of the year. As mentioned above, Chase is the new favorite. As a result, Mac Jones is now a +170 underdog to win the award. If you hold betting tickets on guys like Trevor Lawrence, Najee Harris, Devonta Smith or Justin Fields, you might as well set fire to them.

As the favorite, Chase is certainly deserving. With his video game-esque performance Sunday, Chase set a new record for rookie receiving yards in a season. His 1,429 receiving yards broke the record set by former college teammate Justin Jefferson just last season.

It's been an up and down season for Chase, which should be expected from a rookie. He took the league by storm, compiling 754 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns in his first seven games. He then hit a bit of a rough patch as teams figured him out, posting just 204 yards and 2 touchdowns over his next five games. Chase has regrouped over his last four games, posting 471 yards and 5 touchdowns.

For Mac Jones, it's been a bit of a different story. He's certainly been very solid in his freshman campaign, leading his Patriots back to the playoffs after they missed the postseason last year.

Despite being the betting favorite for most of the season, it always felt like Jones was in that role due to a process of elimination. Trevor Lawrence has been a disappointment of epic proportions. Zach Wilson waited until the last few weeks to show flashes of his ability. Justin Fields is amongst the worst statistical quarterbacks in the league, though he's had very little support around him. Trey Lance has spent the majority of the season on the bench. The second best rookie quarterback might be Davis Mills, a third-round pick with a 2-8 record as a starter.

Story continues

Jones' numbers are solid, but nothing to write home about. He doesn't compare favorably statistically to recent rookie quarterbacks such as Justin Herbert and Kyler Murray's rookie seasons. Even Baker Mayfield had a better rookie season statistically a few seasons ago despite starting just 13 games.

It felt like Jones was the favorite because there was no other legitimate choice. If someone did something spectacular, he was always prone to being usurped. Chase finally did something amazing in Week 17.

When analyzing the MVP prospects of players like Jonathan Taylor or Cooper Kupp, we often warn that it's very unlikely that a non-quarterback wins the award. Thankfully, that's not really the case with offensive rookie of the year.

Sure, the last two winners have been quarterbacks. Justin Herbert won the award last year over Justin Jefferson, but Herbert's season was statistically much superior to the season Mac Jones is having this year.

Since 2013, the offensive rookie of the year has been won by three quarterbacks, four running backs and one wide receiver. Ja'Marr Chase looks to become the first wide receiver to win the award since Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014.

There's recent precedent of a skill position player winning the award over a quarterback. In 2018, Baker Mayfield broke the rookie touchdown passing record at the time in just 13 starts. However, that wasn't enough for him to win the award over Saquon Barkley.

I probably would not bet on Chase to win the award at his current -200 odds. If you're weary of a potential quarterback bias, Jones is not a terrible bet at +170.

It's also worth noting that one week remains in the regular season. There's a good chance the Bengals have nothing to play for in Week 18, so benching Joe Burrow for all or parts of the game is not out of the question. This would obviously impact Chase should he be catching passes from Brandon Allen.

If Jones has another solid game in a win over the Dolphins and Chase posts a dud in Week 18, does that change the outlook for this award? It very well might.

Remember, two days ago, Jones was -500 to win this award and Chase was +350. After a performance where Jones completed 73% of his passes and threw three touchdowns in a game where his team posted 50 points, Jones is now an underdog. This league.

Pac-12 commish ready to go to 8 conference games and start annual football series with Big Ten – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 8:44 am

Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff would like the teams in his conference to play one fewer conference game. That's not as easy of a change as you may think.

Teams in the Pac-12 play nine conference games per season like the Big Ten and the Big 12. Teams in the ACC and the SEC play eight games. The extra non-conference game in the SEC and ACC is an opportunity for those teams to potentially schedule a lucrative neutral site game or a home game against a weaker opponent to get a win toward bowl eligibility.

Kliavkoff recognizes that and would love for his teams to have a chance to play another non-conference game. But the way college football teams create their schedules years and even decades in advance makes that change hard to implement. If the Pac-12 announced that it were going to an eight-game conference schedule for its teams in 2023 or even 2024, those teams would have a difficult time finding opponents with most teams' schedules locked in for the near future.

Were not ready to announce anything, but Ive been public about the fact were ready to go from nine conference games to eight immediately," Kliavkoff told the Los Angeles Times. "The issue is everybody else is booked. We would not be able to fill those games in if we decided to do that. The fastest path to get there is if the Big Ten decided to do the same thing, and then we could just schedule 12 games against the Big Ten, and wed be happy to do that for next season. The Big Ten is not ready to make that move yet, and its not my place to put them on a timeline to do that. Theyre in the middle of their media rights negotiations. The minute the Big Ten is ready to play 12 games against us every year, were ready."

Kliavkoff made his comments about the eight-game schedule to the Times as part of a wide-ranging interview following his first football season as commissioner. The Pac-12 had one of its worst seasons in years and failed to win a bowl game in 2021. The 0-5 bowl season was capped off by Ohio State's second-half comeback in a 48-45 win over Utah.

Story continues

The Big Ten's television contracts currently expire in 2024 and the conference could be in line for more money from television networks as live sports rights continue to be some of the most valuable properties in television. Nine conference games could be a key to getting as much money as possible too. Networks like Fox and ESPN find games like Ohio State against Purdue more attractive than Ohio State against a smaller school with less appeal and alumni base.

A scheduling deal with the Pac-12 could help make eight games far more palatable, however. The Big Ten and Pac-12 historically play each other in multiple bowl games per season and have a longstanding rivalry with each other. Games like USC vs. Michigan and Oregon vs. Penn State would be extremely appealing to TV networks. We're on board if the Big Ten and Pac-12 want to make this happen sometime soon.

Tesla’s Musk exercises all of his stock options expiring next year – Yahoo Finance

Posted: December 29, 2021 at 10:19 am

San Francisco (Reuters) -Tesla Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk has exercised all of his options expiring next year, signaling an end to his stock sales that triggered a fall in the share price of the world's most valuable carmaker.

Musk said last week that he would reach his target of selling about 10% of his stake in Tesla "when the 10b preprogrammed sales complete," likely referring to his options-related stock sales.

Since early November, he has exercised options expiring next year and sold a portion of Tesla stock to pay tax under a "rule 10b5-1" trading plan set up in September.

With the option exercise on 1.6 million shares on Tuesday, he has exercised all of the options on 22.8 million shares, which are due to expire in August. He also sold 934,090 shares for $1.02 billion to pay for taxes, the filings showed.

"This rule 10b5-1 trading plan was completed on December 28, 2021," Tesla said in filings on Tuesday.

Tesla shares lost about a quarter of their value after Musk in November asked his followers on Twitter if he should sell 10% of his holdings. They have rebounded to $1,088.47, but are still below the record closing high of $1,229.91 in November.

CLOSE TO 10% TARGET

Musk has so far offloaded 15.7 million shares in Tesla, coming close to the 10% stake the billionaire has pledged to sell.

Out of the 15.7 million shares, 10.3 million were related to the options exercise. Musk sold an additional 5.4 million, cashing in on Tesla's strong rally.

He has offloaded $16.4 billion worth of shares since early November when he said he would sell 10% of his Tesla stocks if Twitter users agreed.

The Twitter poll came two days after Tesla shares hit a record high following a rally sparked by an order for Tesla cars from rental company Hertz.

Oil prices are headed beyond $80 in 2022: analyst – Yahoo Finance

Posted: at 10:19 am

The renewed vigor in oil prices of late is only just the beginning, contends veteran industry analyst Phillip Streible of Blue Line Futures.

Streible thinks oil prices are at risk of hitting $60 in the near-term due to an Omicron-related demand slowdown. But that will likely prove to be a buying opportunity in front of a "long-term" rally in 2022.

"We are going to see the demand picture continue to pick up going into the [summer] driving season. Hopefully we can get this pandemic behind us. You'll see all that pent-up travel demand really take back off again. Flights were pretty full over the holiday weekend, but we expect them to get even fuller as the capacity picks up. If you look at the supply side on crude oil, we have 432 million barrels. The five-year average is 460 million, so supplies are quite tight. We don't expect OPEC to take any kind of reaction by picking up their supply picture. So we expect any kind of small supply shock would send prices higher. We are expecting $85 to $90 [a barrel] oil next year," said Streible on Yahoo Finance Live.

The call comes as the bulls begin to retake the oil market despite the fast-spreading Omicron variant starting to weigh on global economic growth.

Oil prices rose to a one-month high Monday, a move that saw benchmark brent crude settle around $79 a barrel. The price of brent crude oil extended its gain on Tuesday.

The bullish move higher hasn't extended much to the sector's most well-known stocks, however.

Shares of Exxon and Chevron are each up about 2% in the past five trading sessions, lagging the gains in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (2.7%) and S&P 500 (3%), according to Yahoo Finance Plus data.

Oil's recent bull move has some predicting further pain at the gas pump in 2022.

Gas price tracking outfit GasBuddy predicted in a new report on Tuesday which it shared exclusively with CNN that the national average price for gas will reach $3.41 a gallon in 2022 compared to $3.02 this year. GasBuddy didn't rule out gas prices hitting $4 a gallon by the Memorial Day holiday.

Story continues

"No question about it," said Streible, on whether gas prices will march higher in 2022.

Elizabeth Holmes jury fails to reach verdict, set to reconvene Wednesday – Yahoo Finance

Posted: at 10:19 am

After five full days of deliberations in the fraud case against Elizabeth Holmes, no verdict was reached by the time jurors were excused on Tuesday afternoon.

Deliberations in the case, which includes more than 900 exhibits and testimony from 32 witnesses, including Holmes herself, resumed Tuesday following deliberations all day Monday, and a three-day weekend off due to a court holiday Friday.

Deliberations are scheduled to resume at the federal courthouse in San Jose on Wednesday, starting at 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time.

Holmes, 37, awaits her fate on 11 counts of criminal fraud and conspiracy first claimed in a superseding indictment, claiming she used her now defunct blood-testing company, Theranos, to defraud investors and customers. The biotech founder, first indicted in 2018, led the startup for approximately 15 years before it collapsed after a Wall Street Journal investigation exposed that Theranos could not conduct an array of blood tests from a finger prick of blood as Holmes had suggested.

Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison, $250,000 in fines, and restitution. Following the government's superseding indictment on 12 charges, one charge, count 9, was dropped. Heres a look at the specific counts that the jury is considering, each count's corresponding dollar amount, and maximum penalties.

Elizabeth Holmes Case: Charges & Maximum Penalties

Holmes stood trial for nearly four months. Ramesh Sunny Balwani, Holmes co-defendant, who was her longtime boyfriend and former president and COO of Theranos, is facing a separate trial, set to begin in February. Balwani is also charged with federal wire fraud and federal conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

This story was updated from previous version published at the end of deliberations on Monday, to reflect that the jury concluded deliberations again on Tuesday without announcing a verdict.

The Eagles made a drastic move to try and mitigate COVID. Other NFL teams would be smart to employ it – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 10:19 am

As the blast furnace of COVID-19 continues to burn throughout the NFL climbing to more than 550 player infections in December and roughly 25 percent of all active players the Philadelphia Eagles unilaterally cooked up their own extra layer of defense heading into a pivotal Week 17 game.

Theyre breaking up all of their quarterbacks and offensive play-callers and keeping them in separate rooms inside the team practice facility. The goal is to avoid risking the potential nightmares other franchises are facing this week, including the Indianapolis Colts placing unvaccinated starting quarterback Carson Wentz onto the COVID/reserve list and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians testing positive for COVID. The Colts are fighting to stay in the playoff picture and the Bucs are vying for home-field advantage in the postseason. Meanwhile, the Eagles are in an even more desperate fight, sitting as the seventh playoff seed in the NFC and needing a win Sunday and some help to clinch a playoff berth.

With such risks in mind, Philadelphia created some unique precautions. Keeping all three quarterbacks Jalen Hurts, Gardner Minshew and Reid Sinnett apart from each other will minimize the chance that a positive COVID result could spread and ultimately take out the top two rungs of the quarterbacks room, as weve seen happen with other NFL teams in recent weeks. The same will apply for head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who are the Eagles two offensive play-callers on game day. Philadelphias quarterbacks meetings will also remain virtual the rest of this season.

Its a smart and creative move, showcasing that NFL teams are willing to take their COVID measures beyond the leagues basic protocols, knowing that it could preserve a playoff shot (and maybe future postseason wins) in these final weeks.

We definitely did different things that werent mandated a couple weeks ago and were going to continue with that, Sirianni told reporters Tuesday. We are talking through even more as a staff today. I talked to a couple other head coaches [in the NFL] and tried to figure out what theyre doing. Because we all know, to win this game this week, were going to need all hands on deck. And so, what is the best course of action? Obviously Im talking to our doctors and our trainers to figure out the best course of attack. Were going to definitely make even more adjustments than what we need to just to keep everybody safe. And the quarterbacks, yes, the quarterbacks will be in separate rooms.

Story continues

While that wont prevent the quarterbacks from practicing together, it removes the aspect of having them in a confined space together indoors, which presents a greater risk of COVID infection than outdoors.

Jalen Hurts (right) and Gardnew Minshew are being kept separate at the Eagles' facility to mitigate COVID-19 risks. Other teams would be wise to follow a similar plan for their most important players. (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images)

Thats something that other NFL teams appear to be considering as well. Three executives who spoke to Yahoo Sports said they held meetings Tuesday with coaches to discuss the possibility of moving to all-virtual meetings and also taking added measure for key personnel such as quarterbacks, offensive and defensive play-callers as well as other areas of the roster than cant afford even the smallest bit of added attrition in the coming weeks.

Where we want to preserve some depth or have maybe lost some depth, theres going to be consideration to kind of fortifying things around certain areas of the team, an AFC general manager said. The position meetings are basically virtual now anyway, but theres a few extra steps that can be done for some individual players without basically removing from interaction in the building.

Its a fine line because we dont want to isolate guys [from their teammates] inside the complex, but I guess Id just say there will be a lot of closed doors that are usually open, if that makes sense. Theres just going to be some raised awareness even more raised awareness than there is for some guys.

While that might come off a little awkward, its hardly any different than putting quarterbacks in red jerseys in practice and telling defenders that they arent to be touched. NFL players know the score when it comes to who gets special treatment, and if that means creating some kind of invisible bubble around the most impactful players or positions on the team, it leans into the wins and postseason berth that the entire roster is fighting for.

Frankly, any team that isnt following the Eagles' plan at this point would be foolish. The Colts should have been separating Wentz and Jonathan Taylor and other key personnel the moment COVID infection spiked inside their building, particularly knowing Wentz is unvaccinated and subject to a higher level of scrutiny when it comes to symptomatic infection than other players. You can bet it certainly would have made the New England Patriots feel better at the moment, with backup quarterback Brian Hoyer reportedly heading for the COVID reserve list ramping up the anxiety that starter Mac Jones may have been exposed to COVID. Even against the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars, losing both Jones and Hoyer could have heavy implications Sunday.

At some point, teams will have to weigh the risk of not taking the extra steps to protect key players, especially when theres the argument that a team is giving away an edge to an opponent who is taking extra measures. If anything, its just another layer of protection created organically by clubs in what is an ever-evolving landscape with the league's COVID protocols. As it stands, testing changes have already been made to get vaccinated asymptomatic players back onto the field as quickly as possible. Now with the NFL adopting the CDC advisement on asymptomatic quarantining shortening the period from 10 days to five its going to be easier than ever to get vaccinated and unvaccinated players back into the fold on gameday.

Even with the NFL bending more than ever away from stringent protocols, there are still going to be teams that implement some intelligence and move themselves further ahead of the pack. The Eagles are doing that. The only question now is who will be next.

Christian Wilkins snatches Alvin Kamara’s towel, gets smacked in the head – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 10:19 am

Alvin Kamara ran up and smacked Christian Wilkins in the back of the head on "Monday Night Football," leaving viewers and announcers wondering why.

The seemingly unprovoked act cost the New Orleans Saints 15 yards thanks to an unnecessary roughness penalty on Kamara. The Saints had already sent the punting unit out before the infraction, so it didn't hurt them too bad. But 15 yards is 15 yards.

Also, Kamara is a 215-pound running back. Wilkins is a 310-pound defensive lineman for the Miami Dolphins. Is this beef Kamara really wants? Surely Wilkins did something egregious to provoke such an attack.

Replay cameras solved the mystery. After the commercial break, ESPN rolled previously unseen video that led up to the infraction. As Wilkins and Kamara crossed paths while walking to their respective sidelines, Wilkins snatched Kamara's towel. Right out of his pants.

While silly, it's also easy to see how that can be deemed disrespectful. And Kamara wasn't having it. Wilkins kept his cool and declined to retaliate. So the penalty appeared to put the issue to rest. That is, unless, either player's prone to hold a grudge.

How is the Lakers’ season going? 37-year-old LeBron James is their new starting center – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 10:19 am

If the Los Angeles Lakers' 16-18 record, their five straight losses, Anthony Davis' significant injury and issues with COVID-19 weren't enough to convince you this season is not going according to plan, let the team's new lineup Tuesday provide a little more evidence.

It centers around four interesting words: "starting center LeBron James."

That would be 37-year-old, "won a championship two years ago playing at point guard" LeBron James, who took the floor against the Houston Rockets with three guards and wing Stanley Johnson, signed on a 10-day contract.

You might expect such a development to have been preceded by a glut of injuries among Lakers big men, but ... that hasn't really happened. Davis remains out with an MCL sprain, but Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan were both eligible to play Tuesday. And the Lakers decided to instead play their former MVP in the middle.

Obviously, the Lakers played differently with James at the 5 instead of Jordan and Howard. The offense still flowed through James, though his defensive responsibilities shifted more paint heavy.

As the Lakers' Mike Trudell noted, this was the 19th different starting lineup the Lakers had used in 35 games this season. Only two players Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony have missed fewer than five games this season. That's left the team with still plenty to figure out midway through the season, hence experiments like Tuesday's.

James starting in the middle worked out for at least one game, as the Lakers beat the Rockets 132-123 to halt their losing streak.

The tallest player to see the floor for the Lakers, James posted a triple-double with 32 points (11-of-19 shooting), 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Howard and Jordan did not see a minute on the floor, but the Lakers still finished even in points in the paint with the Rockets, 56-56.

Of course, beating the 10-25 Rockets is hardly a proof of concept. But at least it isn't another loss.
