Hunt for driver who taunted and reversed over injured man – Yahoo News Australia

Posted: November 29, 2020 at 5:30 am

A manhunt is underway following a sickening hit and run incident which left a man with serious injuries after being deliberately reversed over.

The 19-year-old was left unconscious and bleeding on Appleby Street in Wellard, south of Perth in Western Australia, after being struck Friday about 11.40pm.

Police are searching for the driver of a Toyota Camry which was shown in security footage obtained by Nine News dragging the teen along for several metres and causing him to fall and hit his head on the road.

Sickening footage then shows the car reverse back over his body, creating a sound loud enough to alert residents in the area.

Locals rushed to help the teen before emergency crews could arrive, with the driver returning while the teen laid seriously injured on the bitumen.

Bystanders told Nine News the wanted man accused the injured teenager of stealing some sort of chain before fleeing the scene again.

He accused the person of stealing something. Why would you run someone over for a chain? one said.

Police said the victim and the driver, who left the scene without providing assistance, were believed to be known to each other.

St John Ambulance personnel attended and transferred the teenager to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Anyone with information regarding this incident, who recognises the vehicle involved or who saw the vehicle before or after the incident has been asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report the information online at http://www.crimestopperswa.com.au.

Expectations of good news on the near horizon are buoying markets right now. Over the past month, both the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ are up 11% to new record highs.Investors are excited at the prospect of a COVID vaccine coming before the winter is out. And the electoral results, that Democrat Joe Biden will ascend to the Presidency while the Republicans will emerge strengthened in Congress, promise the avoidance of extremes typical of divided government. In short, investors are looking forward to return to normal environment over the next several months. And that has them seeking stocks that are primed for gains. Against this backdrop, Goldman Sachs analysts are pounding the table on three stocks in particular, noting that each could surge over 40% in the year ahead. After running both tickers through TipRanks database, we found out that the rest of the Street is also standing squarely in the bull camp.Codiack BioSciences (CDAK)As we have all learned from coronavirus pandemic, some new thing in medical science can make huge impact on our world. Codiack aims to turn that principle to good. This research-oriented pharmaceutical aims to turn exosome therapeutics into a whole new class of medicines. Exosomes are the degradation mechanism RNA, and can transfer genetic material around a body. And therein lies the potential. Codiack has developed a design platform for the engineering of exosome proteins capable of carrying and protecting drug molecules through cell walls. In effect, the proteins will mimic the pathways used by viruses but are non-viral, and are designed to carry a payload of therapeutic agents. If successful, exosome therapy offers doctors the ability to design a drug that will deliver specific agents to specific cells to fight specific disease.Codiack is involved in all aspects of exosome therapeutics, from design to manufacturing, and currently has an active pipeline of agents seven, in all in various stages of discovery, preclinical testing, and the beginnings of Phase 1 trials. In the biosciences, success or failure is all about that pipeline, and in its diverse, active pipeline of agents in a new sector of biotechnological pharmaceuticals, Codiack has a fine resource to attract investors. To get those investors, the company went public this past October, selling 5.5 million shares at an opening price of $14.10 per share.Among the healthcare name's fans is Goldman Sachs analyst Graig Suvannavejh. The analyst wrote, Biopharma industry interest in exosomes has long been high, but engineering them for a specific function and manufacturing at scale have both proven challenging. Among a field of multiple competitors, CDAK has made the most significant progress on both fronts, and as such we view their technology platform as best-in-class."Given share underperformance (-37%) since the IPO, we find risk/reward highly compelling at current levels, and with key 2021 data sets to provide potential de-risking and positive share inflection," the analyst concluded.Suvannavejh rates CDAK a Buy, and his $29 price target shows the extent of his confidence it implies a 222% upside for the coming year. (To watch Suvannavejhs track record, click here)Overall, Codiack has a Strong Buy from the analyst consensus 3 reviewers have put up Buy ratings in recent weeks. Arcutis has recently issued an update on positive data from the Phase 2 trials of ARQ-151 in atopic dermatitis. The drug is a once-daily treatment, and has demonstrated significant patient relief from symptoms, especially itching and itching-related sleep problems. This is another stock in Suvannavejhs coverage universe. The Goldman analyst is impressed by developments in the companys pipeline work, noting: ARQT provided an update on the outcome of its end-of-Phase 2 meetings with the FDA, following their Phase 2a trial of ARQ-151 in atopic dermatitis (AtD). Feedback from regulators was broadly encouraging, in particular, acknowledging the robust long-term safety data being generated by ARQT for ARQ-151 in plaque psoriasisAccordingly, Suvannavejh rates ARQT a Buy, and sets a $36 price target that indicates room for 40% upside growth in 2021. The real reason China is imposing duties on Australian wine – Yahoo News Australia

Posted: at 5:30 am

China's decision to impose temporary anti-dumping duties on Australian wine from Saturday is more about "other factors", Trade Minister Simon Birmingham says.

Australian wine going into the Chinese market will face tariffs of up to 212 per cent, having benefited from zero tariffs under the China-Australia free trade agreement.

Relations between Australia and China have soured in recent years, with China's grievance list spanning foreign investment rules, banning Huawei from the 5G network and the push for an inquiry into the origins of coronavirus.

China has launched a series of trade strikes against Australia encompassing barley, cotton, red meat, seafood, sugar, timber and coal exports, as the diplomatic row deepens.

"The cumulative impact of China's trade sanctions against a number of Australian industries during the course of this year does give rise to the perception these actions are being undertaken as a result or in response to some other factors," Senator Birmingham said.

"(It) is completely incompatible with the commitments that China has given through the China-Australia free trade agreement and through the WTO."

Australian officials will seek to overturn the move over the next 10 days, after which the dispute could be taken to the World Trade Organisation.

Chinese officials said an investigation had found "substantive" evidence of the dumping of Australian wine and "material damage" to the Chinese wine market.

The tariffs cover a range between 107.1 per cent and 212.1 per cent.

The rate required of Australia's Treasury Wine is 169.3 per cent, which saw its shares fall more than 13 per cent before being put on a trading halt pending an announcement.

China began an anti-dumping probe into imports of Australian wine in August at the request of the Chinese Alcoholic Drinks Association.

Story continues

Senator Birmingham said the investigation's finding was "erroneous in fact and in substance" and Australia would provide Chinese authorities with detailed evidence of how the wine industry works.

Australian wine exports to China were worth $1.1 billion in the year to June 30.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said the government was extremely disappointed in the move by Australia's top wine market.

"The fact is Australia produces amongst the least subsidised product in the world and provides the second-lowest level of farm subsidies in the OECD," he said.

"The Australian government categorically rejects any allegation that our wine producers are dumping product into China, and we continue to believe there is no basis or any evidence for these claims."

Labor's trade spokeswoman Madeline King said exporters were looking for leadership from the government, but seeing no plan for restoring relations with China.

"The relationship with China is increasingly complex. It is a relationship that must be managed in the national interest and not for partisan political interests," she said.

She said billions of dollars in trade and thousands of Australian jobs were at risk.

Driver stuck inside car as it’s swallowed by sink hole – Yahoo News Australia

Posted: at 5:30 am

A driver got the fright of his life early on Sunday morning when a sink hole swallowed his Toyota Camry as he sat inside.

South Australian police were called to St Andrews Crescent in Novar Gardens, a suburb in southwest Adelaide, at 2.15am following reports a car was sinking.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the Toyota Camry half submerged in a large hole and the street flooded with water and dirt.

The street was closed and the police called SA Water for help.

Images of the car submerged in the sink hole were later shared by police on Facebook.

The 21-year-old driver was not injured and his car was towed from the scene, officers said.

St Andrews Crescent was closed while SA Water visited the scene.

More than 30 homes were without water while repairs were being made, according to the Adelaide Advocate.

Our community support team is providing them with an interim supply of drinking water, a spokeswoman from SA Water told The Advocate.

We apologise for the inconvenience, and reassure people we are working as quickly and safely as possible to complete repairs.

It is not clear whether the road has been reopened.

Mum leaves son locked inside filthy unit for days without food or water – Yahoo News Australia

Posted: at 5:30 am

A mother faces losing her son, 10, after she locked him alone in the family flat with only dry rice to eat and vanished for eight days with her dog.

Natalya Azarenkova, 31, has been detained by Russian police and the starving boy named Mikhail taken to hospital.

His ordeal came to light when he, after four days alone, shouted to neighbours for help in an apartment block in Peredelkino, Moscow.

His door was locked from the outside and he begged them not to call the emergency services because he feared he would be sent to an orphanage and never see his mother again.

Starving Mikhail told how she had left him with rice - but no water to cook it - after saying she was going to walk their dog.

During her absence, she appears to have looked after the familys pet Dzaina while leaving the boy at home alone in a dirty flat.

Power and water were cut off in the cockroach-infested apartment.

Neighbours lowered food and juice to him from a balcony on the flat above, but when his mother did not return the following day, they called emergency services out of fear for the boys life.

This was five days after she disappeared. After eight days police detained the mother while she was walking her dog.

I cannot imagine how the child managed to survive five days there, neighbour Dmitry, who was present when officers forced open the door, said.

There are a lot of cockroaches, flies everywhere, an appalling smell.

Despite the horror, the boy was devoted to his mother, locals said. His father died two years ago.

Azarenkova admitted she had locked him in the flat, claiming she had left enough rice for two days.

She said she had been with friends but in a police interrogation video failed to explain why she had left the boy so long.

I need my son, I want to fix everything, she said.

Azarenkova may now face prison and being deprived of her rights to raise the child, say reports citing law enforcement.

The boy is undergoing checks in hospital.

Home burnt by bushfire amid 40C heatwave and 90km/h winds – Yahoo News Australia

Posted: at 5:30 am

A bushfire in the western Sydney suburb of Northmead has been brought under control but only after a home was damaged.

The fire, near Moxham Park on Whitehaven Road in Northmead, travelled up an escarpment on Sunday afternoon and towards homes on the street, with firefighters scrambling to protect properties.

One house could be seen on fire in aerial footage.

The Rural Fire Service rushed multiple crews to the scene and helicopters scooped water out of the nearby Parramatta Lake to dump on the burning home.

But the blaze was deemed under control about 3pm, with firefighters and aircraft getting the upper hand and the threat to properties easing.

It comes as Sydney swelters through the second day of a heatwave that saw overnight November minimum temperature records tumble.

Overnight, Observatory Hill in central Sydney recorded a minimum 25.3C, shattering 1967's November record of 24.8C.

Damaging winds with gusts up to 90km/h are also hitting parts of Sydney as a low pressure trough passes over the area.

The temperature in parts of Sydney, including the CBD, reached 40C on Saturday while swathes of western NSW, South Australia and northern Victoria baked through even higher temperatures approaching 45C.

Cooler temperatures were not forecast to arrive until later on Sunday.

RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers said the service was on Sunday deploying "overwhelming force" to attack every major blaze.

Inside the emotional 48 hours that saved the NBA’s bubble – Yahoo Sports

Posted: August 30, 2020 at 2:49 am

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. The past 48 hours have been a whirlwind for NBA players in the bubble.

Walkouts, conflict, frustration and, ultimately, resolutions characterized this unprecedented time in sports history. And thats all after the players have been sequestered in the Disney bubble, following strict health guidelines and focusing on competition for more than seven weeks.

This is how the NBA nearly lost its postseason but managed to find some common ground, come together and move on in a matter of two days.

Oklahoma City Thunder star Chris Paul, who is the president of the players union, had the tedious and thankless job of uniting the players.

Many were frustrated and emotionally drained after being caught off-guard by the Bucks refusal to take the court Wednesday for Game 5 of their first-round series against the Orlando Magic without informing anyone outside the team of their plans.

Players who were scheduled to compete in the ensuing games felt an obligation to sit out because the Bucks decision wasnt part of an organized plan of action, sources said.

The Bucks, who are up 3-1 in the series, intended to force a forfeit and were willing to take the loss and forgo the opportunity to close out the series, but the organization did not anticipate being the catalyst for temporarily shutting down the league, sources said.

The protest was in response to the shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man who was shot in the back multiple times on Sunday by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as he tried to get into his vehicle. The incident was captured on video. His three sons ages 3, 5, and 8 were in the vehicle during the incident, his familys attorney said. Blake remains hospitalized.

A players meeting was arranged for 8 p.m. Wednesday to discuss the next move. Some wanted to leave the bubble to be with family, others wanted to leave to get on the frontlines and support change in the Black community, and others felt theres no bigger platform than the one afforded in the bubble to get their messages across, sources said.

Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem, whose veteran stature gives him cachet among his peers, was one of the more vocal voices in the meeting, sources said.

Some players took issue with Bucks guard George Hill, who was a central figure in persuading the Bucks not to play and who said on Monday that we shouldnt have even came to this damn place while lamenting the Blake shooting.

Haslem in a clear message to Hill stated that it was irresponsible and selfish for an established veteran to suggest that everyone should go home because younger players havent accumulated the wealth for such a drastic action, sources said.

LeBron James was one of the many players miffed with the Bucks handling of the situation as well, sources said. To him and so many others, it put them in a no-win situation.

His frustration with Hill and the Bucks was because the players didnt have a plan of action that would warrant players returning to play, sources said. James mindset, sources said, was if theyre refusing to play, then whats the end game and what demands must be met to continue?

Ever since the league suspended play on March 11 due to the coronavirus, James had been an advocate for resuming play if proper health and safety protocols allowed for it.

But in Wednesdays meeting, players began seeing a shift in his position when he agreed to go with whatever the majority decided, sources said.

With emotions all over the place, Haslem pressed James and asked the star what he planned to do, reminding him that hes the face of the league and it goes as he goes, sources said.

James then said, Were out, and walked out with almost all of his teammates following behind, sources said, with Dwight Howard being the only Laker who remained.

The Clippers walked out as well, joining the Lakers as the only two of the 13 teams still in the bubble to vote against completing the rest of the playoffs.

But that wasnt the only scene that got testy.

Michele Roberts, the executive director of the players union, asked to have the floor to speak about the financial ramifications of leaving Orlando.

While she was going over the numbers, Clippers guard Patrick Beverley abruptly interrupted her, saying he disagreed with her logic, sources said. Roberts kindly reiterated that these were potential losses the players would suffer, and Beverley interrupted again.

Story continues

Roberts asked politely if she could continue with her point, and Beverley responded, No, I pay your salary, sources said.

This caused an uproar with Paul, Haslem and others, who intervened and told Beverley that disrespect would not be tolerated, sources said.

After nearly three hours and with emotions running high, players agreed to meet again on 11 a.m. ET Thursday to make a final decision on the season.

A significant source of frustration in Wednesdays meeting stemmed from players not being on the same page and letting emotions get the best of some. The hope from the collective was after a good nights sleep, players would be in a better space to make a sound decision.

When it was time to gather on Thursday, the meeting couldnt get underway, sources said, because there was one team missing: the Lakers.

They arrived at the meeting 45 minutes late, sources said. Prior to the Lakers and Clippers entering the meeting area, members of the executive committee reached out to James and Clippers guard Lou Williams to see where their teams stood on resuming play, sources said.

James and Williams informed the committee that their teams were in. Now with the go-ahead from all 13 teams, Paul and Andre Iguodala the first VP of the players union announced to the players that they would continue with the playoffs.

Yet still, a few players objected, asking who voted on their behalf, sources said. Paul and Iguodala took on the leadership role and said they were intent on playing, and promised they wouldnt be moving forward without their best interests in mind.

Later that afternoon, there was a Zoom call between team owners and players.

On the call, James was stern in calling on owners to do more in aiding the Black community and to play more of a role in using their resources to combat systemic racism, sources said.

James had already told players he was in, but depending on how the meeting went with owners, he would have reversed course if things went sideways, sources said.

After the meeting, James felt comfortable with returning to the court, sources said. Owners promised that they would get to work on real action items that would benefit the Black community, sources said.

James always supported the Bucks; he just wanted unity and a specific call to action if they wanted to take a stand, sources said.

Even though James is just one player, it would have been impossible for the league to continue if he didnt change his position.

Thursday mornings players-only meeting lasted only 15 minutes, sources said. The walkout didnt occur organically. But Paul, Iguodala, James, Jared Dudley and other veterans worked around the clock over the past two days to find a resolution.

Thats how the NBA came back.

Coronavirus vaccine development ‘is just like Diana Ross and The Supremes,’ expert says – Yahoo Finance

Posted: at 2:49 am

Some health experts are worried that the race for a coronavirus vaccine could lead to a vaccine becoming publicly available before its proven to be safe.

Its just like Diana Ross and The Supremes, Dr. Michael Saag, an associate dean for global health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said on Yahoo Finances The Ticker (video above). You cant hurry love and you cant hurry vaccine development. The reason I say that is that we need the time to see if the vaccine actually works and we need to see if its safe.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), stressed that rushing a vaccine could do more harm than good.

The one thing that you would not want to see with a vaccine is getting an [emergency use authorization] before you have a signal of efficacy, he told Reuters. One of the potential dangers if you prematurely let a vaccine out is that it would make it difficult, if not impossible, for the other vaccines to enroll people in their trial.

President Trump, meanwhile, has tweeted that the FDA should focus on speed while telegraphing his desire that a coronavirus vaccine be ready by Election Day, November 3.

Experts have repeatedly refuted the idea that a safe, vetted vaccine could be ready as quickly as the president would like.

What we dont want to do is rush things along so fast for obviously political reasons, as far as I can tell, to get it out there and then discover wait, this vaccine doesnt work like we thought it was going to work or worse, there are safety issues, Saag said. So Fauci is exactly right. We need to do this the right way and keep a firewall between science and politics.

This isnt the first time that health officials warned about the Trump administrations influence on public health organizations.

Last weekend, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for convalescent plasma as a means for treating COVID-19 after Trump insinuated that the FDA was slow-walking clinical trials as part of a deep state plot to hinder his chances at re-election.

Story continues

In a lengthy Twitter thread, FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said that the decision to issue an EUA was based solely on science. A few days later, the CDC created widespread alarm and confusion when the public health agency changed guidelines on coronavirus testing after pressure from administration officials.

We cant really have politics interfering with what science needs to do, Saag said. Its not going to work well. And its going to endanger all of us if we keep letting this bleeding happen from the political space into the science space. So lets let everyone do their job and try to keep politics out of it.

George Hill downplays skipping national anthem with candid explanation of ‘pregame ritual’ – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 2:49 am

George Hill returned with his teammates to NBA action on Saturday.

He did not join them for the national anthem.

After the game he provided an unexpected explanation for his absence.

The Milwaukee Bucks guard who initiated Wednesdays walkout that resulted in a three-day player strike in the NBA bubble remained in the tunnel as the national anthem played prior to Saturdays game against the Orlando Magic.

Hill has been vocal since the start of bubble play, questioning whether NBA play should resume amid unresolved issues of racial injustice and police brutality.

We shouldnt have even come to this damn place, to be honest,Hill said on Monday. I think coming here just took all the focal points off what the issues are.

Hill made that statement a day after video surfaced of police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, shooting Jacob Hill in the back several times, leaving the 29-year-old father of three paralyzed from the waist down, according to his family.

George Hill was a leader in the decisions that led to this week's NBA player strike. (Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Three days later, the Bucks refused to take the floor for Game 5 of their first-round playoff series against the Magic. Hill was reportedly instrumental in the decision and the leading voice of the team as it released a statement making demands of accountability for Blakes shooting, which occurred roughly 45 miles south of Milwaukee.

Hill read from a team statement alongside Bucks forward Sterling Brown as their teammates stood behind them in a news conference Thursday evening.

Over the last few days in our home state of Wisconsin, we have seen the horrendous video of Jacob Blake being shot in the back seven times by a police officer in Kenosha and theadditional shooting of protestors. Despite the overwhelming plea for change, there have been no actions, so our focus cannot be on basketball.

Hill scored 11 points in 23 minutes in Milwaukees 118-104 win. He also provided a candid explanation for missing the anthem while downplaying his absence after the game when asked by Yahoo Sports Seerat Sohi.

You want the honest truth? Hill asked. I take a s--- every time before the game. Ive been doing it for the last four years. If you go back and watch any footage of our previous games before we came down here to this bubble, thats what I do before every game.

It so happens that you guys were snoozing in the hallways and caught me coming back from my pregame ritual. And thats what I always do. Thats the honest truth.

Fantasy Football Draft Prep: Finding the best ADP values at Yahoo, ESPN, and NFC – CBS Sports

Posted: at 2:49 am

We spend a lot of time discussing average draft position as a whole. It's how we frame risers and fallers, good buys and bad buys, sleepers and busts, etc. ADP even frames which guys I allegedly like or dislike. What we don't often talk about is whose ADP we're discussing.

For a variety of reasons, ADP can vary wildly depending on which site you're drafting on. This can be influenced by the site's projections, the default rankings, the analysts rankings, and the default scoring system. And by the time we get to late August, ADP is even influenced by itself. Think about i:. If you're drafting on Yahoo and considering Ronald Jones in Round 5, isn't it going to give you pause that his ADP shows Round 8? On the other hand, you wouldn't think twice if you're drafting on NFC, where his ADP is 60th overall.

Jamey Eisenberg does a great job each week keeping you up to date on the latest movement in CBS Fantasy ADP, so I'm going to break down my favorite values on ESPN, Yahoo, and NFC below. I'm not saying you should wait until the 13th round to draft Jamison Crowder on Yahoo; I think he's a Round 8 value in that format. If it's a player you really want I wouldn't be shy about taking them two rounds before their site-specific ADP.

I had this exact discussion with Ben Gretch on Thursday's Fantasy Football Today podcast. Check it out here:

After my favorite values, I also have a few deep sleepers for each site. These players are all available after Round 12 on average.

Yahoo Deep Sleepers: Jamison Crowder, Tony Pollard, Christian Kirk, Preston Williams, Boston Scott

ESPN Deep Sleepers: Antonio Gibson, Chase Edmonds, Jonnu Smith, Allen Lazard

NFC Deep Sleepers: Gardner Minshew, Bryce Love, Laviska Shenault, Malcolm Brown

Which players are poised for breakouts, which sleepers do you need to jump on, and which busts should you avoid at all costs in your Fantasy football league? Visit SportsLine now to get early rankings, plus see which WR is going to come out of nowhere to crack the top 10, all from the model that out-performed experts big time last season.
