Cubs power their way to their first home winning streak since July – WGN-TV

Posted: August 28, 2021 at 12:13 pm

CHICAGO It was power that got the Cubs out of a record-setting home losing streak on Monday, and it was that same kind of offense that helped them get their first winning streak at Wrigley Field in a month on Wednesday.

This time, it was three players who powered the Cubs to a win over the Rockies.

A trio of players hit home runs in the first of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon as David Bote, Austin Romine, and then Patrick Wisdom went deep in a 5-2 victory over Colorado to extend their home win streak to two.

Thats the first time thats happened since the team beat the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 25th and then the Cincinnati Reds on July 26th. After that, the Cubs set a franchise record with 13-consecutive home defeats, which topped the old record of 12 set in 1994.

After the Rockies got a homer in the second inning of Zach Davies, Bote got it right back with a solo homer, his eighth of the year, to tie it at one. Colorado got a run in the top of the third and held that till the fourth when Romine hit his first homer of 2021, a solo shot, to even the game at two.

Wisdom then gave the Cubs the lead with good with a long three-run homer onto Waveland Avenue in the fifth inning, his 21st of the year, to put his team ahead to stay.

Codi Heuer, who had a 1.35 ERA in 11 appearances coming into Wednesday, pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief of Davies to get the win. Adam Morgan got his first save in the seventh as both he and Heuer failed to allow a runner in their time on the mound.

Examples of memorable cheers at athletic contests leads Bill Huey, of Baton Rouge, to see an opportunity to bring a little class to Tiger Stadium:

"'Deeefense!' could become 'Obstruct and contend! Thrash and thwart them!' by the Honors College, in its own section. Admission would be an ACT score of at least 30 and, of course, full vaccination.

"Tailgating might include a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, fruits and cheeses, and Triscuits with rosemary bacon jam."

"Amused" tells of an enlightening discovery:

"As I was cleaning bedside table drawers, I came across this article from your column, dated Feb. 5, 2003:

Chapter and Verse: J.G.S. tells of the new pastor visiting homes of his flock.

At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks.

He took out a card, wrote on it "Revelation 3:20" ("Behold, I stand at the door and knock ") and stuck it in the door.

Checking the offering on Sunday, he found his card had been returned, with this message: "Genesis 3:10."

He checked his Bible and was amused to read that the answer was "I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid, for I was naked."

After I told of a prank involving my little sports car, I heard from Wayne Smith, of Covington, with this story:

"When I was in high school in southern Illinois in the late 1950s, there was once a commercial vendor of some sort who came after school to sell his wares.

"He parked his VW Karmann Ghia (it looked like a sports car and ran like a Beetle) behind the school.

"While inside, the football team came out to go to practice, saw the car, lifted it up and hid it behind some thick, high bushes.

"The poor guy came out and thought his precious baby had been stolen. Police involved and everything.

"Later, after they all left the crime scene, the boys lifted his car up and put it back where they found it. Then, after they had cleared out, too, an 'anonymous' caller to the police said the car was right where he left it!

"That story even came back up at our 20th reunion."

Marsha R., of Baton Rouge, says, "In 1959 I bought a brand-new iris blue 1960 MGA for $1,600.

"The coolest thing was that I could lean out the window and strike a kitchen match on the pavement to light my cigarettes.

"I bought a foreign car repair book. One chapter was: 'If the English ruled the ocean, why cant their cars run through puddles?'

"My favorite chapter was one sentence: 'Carburetor is a French word meaning "Leave it alone."'"

Emma Lean Haney, of Baton Rouge, celebrates her 95th birthday Saturday, August 28. She attends True Light Baptist Church.

Velma Elmer, of Metairie, celebrates her 90th birthday Sunday, August 29.

Chaplain Gary E. Penton, of Pineville, celebrates his 90th birthday Sunday, August 29.

Charles and Betty Griffin, of Metairie, celebrate their 68th anniversary Saturday, August 28.

Rose and Sam Papa, of Arabi, celebrate 68 years of marriage Saturday, August 28.

Lionel and Carolyn Keller, of Prairieville, celebrate their 66th anniversary Friday, August 27.

Bob and Jeannie Martin, of Christwood Retirement Community, Covington, celebrate their 61st anniversary Friday, August 27. (They formerly lived in Metairie; Waveland, Mississippi, and Mandeville).

Harry and Gwen Morel, of Luling, celebrate their 56th anniversary Saturday, August 28. They met at LSU's Alex Box Stadium 1962 when Harry played third base for the Tigers.

Jim and Susan Brunson, of Metairie, celebrate their 50th anniversary Friday, August 27.

Rich and Veronica "Ronnie" Veillette, of Baton Rouge, have their 50th anniversary Saturday, August 28. They celebrated in Iceland in July to beat the heat.

Marvin Borgmeyer, of Baton Rouge, tells of an accomplishment that can be appreciated by folks of a certain age:

"Not to brag, but I went into another room and remembered why I went in there. Granted, it was the bathroom, but still "

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts will host a horrifying self-congratulatory party Thursday as his team craters – Kent Sterling

Posted: at 4:15 pm

by Kent SterlingAugust 17, 2021

Shameless emotional pirate and Cubs owner Tom Ricketts will host the worst party in the history of Chicagos North Side Thursday.

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts is a tone-deaf buffoon.

When The Athletics Jon Greenberg reported yesterday that the Ricketts Family has scheduled a party this Thursday to honor themselves for saving Wrigley Field, I believed it was a parody. After all, the Cubs lost their 12th straight last night with what is now a triple-A roster after trade deadline deals of almost every player with any value.

What else but parodies mocking this profiteer family from Nebraska might beleft to draw clicks?

Sadly, Greenberg was not kidding. The Ricketts are even planning to affix a plaque to Wrigley Field to commemorate the Ricketts familys commitment to preserving Wrigley Field.

I just threw up in my mouth thinking about it.

The boundless gall of theRickettswill be written about and discussed for centuries. When children 20 years from now read that plaque and ask their parents what it means, I offer this as the explanation for theiruse:

The Ricketts self-congratulatory message remains an outrageous opus to a dim moment in Americas past when the absurdly rich felt compelled to express their self-immersion with gaudy plaques that excusetheir quest for additional billions of dollars by claiming the moral high ground as saviors of buildings and societies.

Sure, the children wont know what some of those wordsmean, but they will get the drift. Maybe subsequent owners will replace the Ricketts plaquewith their own message discrediting the Ricketts as preposterous and obnoxious predators who valued cash over all other concerns.

Just as dealing Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, and Craig Kimbrel at the trade deadline was a cash grab, saving Wrigley Field was nothing more than a real estate investment, plain and simple. It had nothing to do with preserving a beautiful relic. It was not motivated by anything resembling altruism.

Prior to buying the Cubs,Ricketts correctly realized that Wrigley Field is the primary draw for fans. It serves as a brick and mortar memorial connecting generations of Cubs and Bears fans for more than a century. We visit with ever echoing memories of our first trips to Wrigley with dads, moms, and grandparents as much as we attend games.

Replace Wrigley Field with a ballpark out in Schaumburg and attendance would be reduced by 75%.

Ricketts also understood that the collar real estate was being poorly exploited, and that represented a simple opportunity to generate additional revenue with somecheap construction, aneasily won battle with building owners across Waveland and Sheffield Avenues, and some structural improvements to the stadium itself.

I dont begrudge Ricketts any of the cash he will reap for having the stones to execute a relatively obvious plan that for some reason previous owners neglected to embrace. But hosting a party to honor himself as the patron saint of old ballparks, and affixing a commemorative plaque declaring his familysbeneficence is an outrage to Wrigley Field, the memories of Cubs fans upon which he preys, and reason itself.

The plaque is such a baldfaced lie, it likely gave the artisan who crafted it a debilitating affliction or at least several moments of reflection when he or she wondered whether another profession might be more fulfilling.

There is nothing wrong with the quest for dollars, even the vast numbers of dollars the Ricketts children churn as they wisely invest the money their father gave them. Generations passing cash and a thirst for more to kids is the grease for Americasprosperity. Hosting a party to pat themselves on the back for doing nothing more than maximizing the value of their real estate holdings and then unveiling a plaque as though the party required tangible proof of its mission is a shameless and wanton display of boundless self-aggrandizement.

Cant believe I gave these clowns cash to buy season tickets in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Also cant believe I continue to give a damn about the AAA roster that has run up 12 straight losses.

Of course, the hideous optics of hosting a party on the day after the Cubs very likely lose their 13th straight game would never dawn on this family ofrapacious lunatics.

Saturday AM Forecast: Afternoon storms continue, watching the tropics – WBRZ

Posted: August 20, 2021 at 6:02 pm

The Forecast: T-showers this evening will diminish overnight. Tomorrow, expect another hot and humid afternoon with highs in the low 90s. A few pop-up showers and thunderstorms will be likely in the afternoon/evening. Rain coverage will be slightly lower than Sunday, around 40%.

Looking Ahead: No significant changes in our weather pattern are expected going forward. Look for a daily chance of afternoon showers and storms with highs in the low-mid 90s over the next week. CLICK HERE for your full 7-Day Forecast.

The Tropics

We are continuing to closely monitor Fred and Grace.

Fred re-gained tropical storm status this morning. Tropical Storm Fred will likely make landfall over the Florida Panhandle on Monday with winds of 60mph.

South of Puerto Rico, we have poorly organized Tropical Depression Grace. Land interaction with Hispaniola and Cuba will limit intensification in the short term. By late week, Grace is expected to enter the southern Gulf of Mexico. There, environmental conditions may become more favorable for strengthening. Big take away -- Land interaction will likely result in changes in the path and intensity of Grace over the next few days, so now is just the time to pay attention and stay tuned for updates.

NOAA Predicts Up To 18 Days of High Tide Flooding In Boston Next Year – WBUR

Posted: July 18, 2021 at 5:42 pm

Boston had 11 days of high-tide flooding last year and can expect 1118 days next year, according to a report released Wednesday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Sometimes called "nuisance" or "sunny-day" flooding, high-tide flooding occurs when tides reach anywhere from 1.75 to 2 feet above the daily average high tide and start spilling onto streets or bubbling up from storm drains. There have been increasingly more in recent years, largely due to sea-level rise.

High-tide flooding endangers crucial infrastructure in Boston, includingwaste and stormwater systems, MBTA lines, and roads like the frequently-flooded Morrissey Boulevard.

"Damaging floods that decades ago happened only during a storm are now happening more regularly, even without severe weather," saidNicole LeBoeuf, director of NOAA's National Ocean Service, at a press conference. "High tide flood levels may become the new high tide in some locations."

"For the first time in human history, the infrastructure we build must be designed and constructed with future conditions in mind," she added.

NOAA's 2021 State of High Tide Flooding and Annual Outlookdocuments changes in high-tide flooding patterns from May 2020 to April 2021 at 97 NOAA tide gauges along the U.S. coast including one in Boston and provides a flooding outlook for these locations through April 2022, as well as projections for the next several decades.

Boston's flood numbers weren't record-breaking last year the city saw 22 days of high-tide flooding in both 2009 and 2017, compared to 11 last year. NOAA oceanographerWilliam Sweet, lead author on the report, said that Boston's relative sea level actually dipped about four centimeters last year, possibly because of unusual atmospheric conditions. And while it's normal for sea-levels to wax and wane a bit each year, the overall trend is decidedly upwards.

"We had a little bit of a reprieve last year in terms of sea levels as well as storm activity," Sweet said, but "the telltales all are pointing to higher sea levels and more flooding in the coming years."

Fourteen coastal communities in the U.S. set or tied records for days of high-tide flooding. Galveston, Texas; Corpus Christi, Texas; and Bay Waveland, Mississippi locations that flooded 2-3 days each year 20 years ago set a record of more than 20 days of high tide floodingfrom May 2020 to April 2021.

The NOAA report predicts 20-35 days per year of high-tide flooding for Boston by 2030, and 45-95 days by 2050. These long term outlooks are based on the range of relative sea level rise, using "intermediate" scenarios from the Fourth National Climate Assessment.

To learn more about how sea-level rise affects Boston, check out all the features from our series Boston Under Water.

‘Crossroads: Change in Rural America’ exhibit at the Waveland Ground Zero Hurricane Museum – WXXV News 25

Posted: July 7, 2021 at 3:13 pm

The Smithsonians Museum on Main Street, in cooperation with Mississippi Humanities Council, came together to showcase the Crossroads: Change in Rural America exhibit at the Waveland Ground Zero Hurricane Museum.

The exhibition will tour six communities in Mississippi and Waveland is the only host site on the Coast.

The exhibit explores how rural American communities changed in the 20th century. The interactive exhibit showcases six panels that each tell a different story.

Bernie Cullen, museum board chair and project director, tells News 25 the exhibit allows residents in Hancock County to learn about the rich and rural heritage. We really liked the fact that it was Crossroads: Changes in Rural America because you know we are rural, we got some city, we got some country in us but when we look at the information about this exhibit, when you look at change when you look at persevering, when you look at community, it just fit Waveland and it fit Hancock County. So, what we also decided to do as a board is we didnt just look at it as a Waveland project, we looked at it as a Hancock County project.

Crossroads: Change in Rural America will be set up at the Waveland Ground Zero Hurricane Museum until Saturday, August 14th. Admission is free.
