Hadley profives ‘immersive experience’ in new virtual reality screening room for health care professionals and students – Chicago Daily Herald

Recent technological advances have given those living with low vision much needed new tools to access visual information, including virtual and augmented reality. Now that same high-tech virtual reality experience is available for professionals serving those with vision loss, too. The idea is to give them a glimpse into how their patients see the world, increasing their understanding of what life may be like for them and what new skills they will need to live life safely and confidently.
At Hadley, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization - and the nation's leader in distance and online learning for visually impaired adults for more than a century - virtual reality has now become a valuable teaching tool for the many health care professionals, clinical students, optometrists, low vision therapists and ophthalmologists who visit Hadley to further their knowledge of the resources available through Hadley for their patients with visual impairments.
In 2019, prior to the pandemic, Hadley underwent a complete renovation of its building in North suburban Chicago - including an investment in technology - furthering Hadley's commitment to learning for health care professionals by developing a new virtual reality screening room designed to immerse sighted individuals into a world of limited vision.
Hadley's virtual reality screening room surrounds visitors with floor-to-ceiling walls featuring various moving cityscapes and differing public scenes, using state-of-the-art projection technology from Epson. Once in the room, students are provided with special goggles that simulate different visual impairments such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy to better understand the way people with low vision see the world around themselves. To complete the immersive experience, a noise simulator in Hadley's virtual reality room augments the environment with traffic, voices and other ambient sounds.
Hadley has long partnered with many national and international organizations to better meet the needs of health care professionals, including the National Eye Institute and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (who originally produced the videos shown in Hadley's virtual reality cave), as well as many individual universities, optometry and ophthalmology programs.

Virtual Reality Startup HIKKY Raises 6.5 Billion Yen In Series A Funding Round – PRNewswire

The capital raised will help expand HIKKY's virtual reality services both domestically and abroad, as well as to strengthen their organizational foundation. Ask any of the agents working at the Ready To Run virtual sale which starts at Te Rapa today what to expect and the answer is the same.
"The good lots will sell well, they always do," says leading agent Bruce Perry.
"Sure, it is different not having the sale at Karaka and having horses on the grounds for people to view but people still want good horses and the same better lots will probably be on most people's lists."
The two-day sale has been moved to Te Rapa because of the Covid travel restrictions at the Auckland border so there will be no overseas buyers present.
There will still be a live auction with agents, buyers and vendors present but plenty of the bidding will be online, either from other areas of New Zealand or for the most sought-after lots from overseas.
That thought would have been daunting 18 months ago but New Zealand Bloodstock has developed the world's premier online bidding platform while Covid has meant purchasing horses online in other timezones is almost the new normal for many in the thoroughbred industry.
With this Ready To Run sale having produced group one winners from Caulfield Cups to Hong Kong Miles, there will no shortage of demand from Asia and Australia, where there seems to be an almost unquenchable thirst for good gallopers as stakes continue to skyrocket.

The reality is many of those buyers, particularly the ones with the firepower to secure lots north of $400,000, end up looking at the same horses.
"The buyers who buy at top end at this sales regularly have their established criteria and they will tend to gravitate to lots by certain stallions," says Perry.
"So those horses will take care of themselves and sell well.
"What might be more of a struggle are some of the horses without quite as strong a page (pedigree) who might have been spec buys from agents or trainers on the grounds had we been at a normal sale at Karaka.
"That is the end of the market affected by something like this but there is nothing anybody can do about it." Because horses will not be onsite over the next two days those late buying choices, and you would be surprised how often they happen, will lessen but the need for earlier research has been understood by agents and trainers.
There were far more of both present at recent on farm inspections of the 260 two-year-olds to be sold, with many lots then undergoing veterinary examinations as potential buyers refine their lists.
While the top end of the market will take care of itself in the next two days there are bound to be bargains at the lower end the market as vendors work out whether to retain the horses and try to grow their worth at the trials or races or take a price lower than they would like.

Virtual Reality a "positive impact" on the hybrid model of learning – The PIE News

The two organisations partnered to conduct a research project aiming at a qualitative study on the challenges and benefits of using VR in a hybrid learning model.
As the pandemic forced the language education industry to rapidly overcome a huge hurdle, VR was one of the facets incorporated into hybrid teaching at IH Manchester.
VR experiences bring back interaction and rapport otherwise lost during the shift to digital, said Peter Hayes, a member on the board of directors at IH World Organisation.
The initial study was conducted on a five-week hybrid English language course, which examined the impact of VR hybrid on learning and teaching.
The findings indicated that students preferred VR hybrid to the standard hybrid model, especially as it reduced some of the challenges with group work.
Additionally, it improved opportunities for interaction and productive language practice, which was visibly impacted by the ushering in of remote learning.
CEO of Immerse, Quinn Taber, said while there was never any doubt VR will improve the learning experience, student connection specifically was a big factor.
Its exciting to see how students felt more connected to their peers in-class, even those who were thousands of miles from the physical space thats the power that VR can bring to language education, said Taber.
Teachers involved in the study said they felt like it was the start of something really effective in terms of in terms of bridging the gap/distance between in-school and online students.
VRimproved opportunities for interaction and productive language practice
Students found it to be a fun experience, with one saying they actually feel like Im talking to someone in front of me, and another even calling it really funny.
The role play tasks can be more interesting and realistic; when we were asked to play a role of a shop assistant and a customerit was much nicer than just pretending we were doing this in class without any objects, said another student.
Sara Davila, head of efficacy and learning at Immerse, said this research is just the beginning.
While this is only the first of what will, hopefully, be many reports to come, it is extremely encouraging to see how learners benefited from the addition of VR to their learning experience.

Disney CEO talks about the future metaverse during Boston event with Robert Kraft – Boston Herald

The virtual reality metaverse is the future of Disney, the Walt Disney Companys leader said during a Boston event with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft on Monday.
The metaverse hasnt been created yet, but Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek described the virtual reality world as blending this physical world with the digital world without constraints.
The move toward virtual reality comes as Disney now has VR games and experiences to virtually interact with characters, and as the company focuses on Disney Plus.
If you want to have lunch with the Disney princesses, you can do that in the future, the Disney CEO said during Boston Colleges Executive Club luncheon at the Boston Harbor Hotel.
Its a little bit hard to understand because its not yet been created, but I think when youre the Walt Disney Company you have this unique ability to take the physical manifestations of peoples lives and blend it with the digital existence that they have, Chapek said. And to do that in a unique way that when you have parks and a digital platform, like Disney Plus, no one else has that ability to do it.
The company is telling creative leaders in different studios to paint a three-dimensional canvas.
If your specialty is movies, youve now branched out to the Disney Plus world and created series, Chapek said, noting The Mandalorian series under the Star Wars franchise.
I think its tremendously liberating for a creative mind to now go into that three-dimensional canvas, and take the physical and the digital and bring it all together in one sort of cohesive, untethered way, the Disney CEO said. So I do think that thats the next generation.
Kraft introduced Chapek and noted how Disney had to adjust to the coronavirus pandemic, and how the company pivoted to a direct-to-consumer model with Disney Plus.
Chapek had been the CEO for only 10 days before the world fell apart, he said of the shutdown.
In some cases, were still recovering in many ways two years later, Chapek said.
Kraft, who asked Chapek a few questions, worked with the Disney CEO on the recent contract negotiations for NFL broadcast rights.
The Patriots owner showered Chapek with praise, saying he earned his trust through those negotiations.
Bob knows how to close, and Ill just say personally after that negotiation, I decided that I was investing more in Disneys stock, Kraft said. And Im very happy I did it, too. Its done well.

Jean-Michel Jarre enters the metaverse and says why we shouldnt be afraid of a dystopian future – Euronews

French electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarres most known tracks may have defined the sci-fi sounds of the 70s and 80s, but decades on his songs still feel like they come from the future.
It will therefore come as no surprise that the 73-year-old is preparing to enter the metaverse.
Jarre, known for his most popular track Oxygen, has teamed up with the company owned by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, Sensorium Corporation, which is building a digital metaverse called Sensorium Galaxy.
The metaverse and VR [virtual reality] makes me think about the beginning of cinema like the Frres Lumire, Jarre told Euronews Next.
At the end of the 19th century, when lots of people from the theatre were saying they are not actors, a real actor is somebody on stage in front of a real audience, but then it [cinema] became the major art form. We know VR is in exactly the same situation today.
He believes the metaverse will not affect music festivals or real concerts and it will be the reverse.
You're going to reinforce them [festivals and concerts] because it's a different mode of expression, Jarre said.
The artist is no stranger to the world of VR. To see in 2021, he used the technology to produce a New Years Eve performance in the middle of pandemic-hit Paris at the historic Notre-Dame cathedral. While there was no physical audience, 75 million people tuned in to the show.
What is very interesting with VR is the fact that you can connect with people in that social and totally different way, Jarre said.
There is a social dimension to VR. Despite the fact that people can be isolated for geographic reasons, social or health reasons, they can now be together, sharing the same event at the same time. And this is one of the advantages of VR.
But the artist, who also has tracks on the hit game Grand Theft Auto IV, says the metaverse will help musicians develop too.
Virtual reality is, of course, technically linked with video games, but VR should be considered as a mode of expression in itself, he said.
Musicians are increasingly taking their performances to the metaverse. Pop singer Ariana Grande, for example, virtually performed on the online game Fortnite.
But Jarre will not just be performing VR concerts online for Sensorium. The company, which has also partnered with other musicians such as the DJ David Guetta, is also building Motion World.
Motion can be explained as a high-graphic, underwater virtual land that has performance spaces. The company says it will also be a space for users to reinvigorate their minds with meditation and well-being practices.
Unlike building a cartoonish VR world like Facebooks Horizon, Sensorium wants Motion to be more life-like and it says artists are key to building that world.
We as developers need creative minds. So, we work with Jean-Michel, work with other musicians, we work with the best creative studios to actually find the best environments that would make users fall in love with the product, said Siranush Sharoyan, director of communications at Sensorium.
And we dont believe that developers, who just make copies of what we have in real life, would really succeed in getting users to be engaged. We need something else, just like cinema, she told Euronews Next.
Jarre is a co-creator of Motion and will be sound engineering the virtual environment with immersive sounds. For him, to be able to be fully immersed in this digital VR world, its not just the visuals that count.
Sound is also key to the immersive feeling in VR, he explained, which can be created with vinyl technique and sonic surround sound.
That's going to be very easy to get that immersion with your own headphones, without any app, without anything, said Jarre.
He believes that it will be cheaper to produce and listen to and will generate a new kind of creators, musicians, and artists that are going to write for this new medium.
This is really exciting because it's going to give birth to a new way of operating music or producing music, he said.
Today we are producing music from our bedrooms. You can write, compose, record, produce, distribute your music from your home, from your bedroom.
A dystopian future?
For the moment, the VR and AR equipment that is needed to enter the metaverse is costly. Gaming computers are needed that can cost thousands of euros and the goggles can cost hundreds more.
Sensorium, like other companies, is working on getting the pricing down and trying to rectify the issues many users feel, such as nausea.
While the tech works itself out and aims to be available to more budgets in the future, Jarre says we should not be afraid of this new digital world.
Technology has always dictated styles. It is because we invented the violin that Vivaldi played his music and because we created synthesisers, people like me are doing the music we are doing today. Its the same with VR, said Jarre.
VR is going to affect the creativity of musicians in the right way.
We should stop having this kind of obsession to consider the future in a dystopian way. If I say, yesterday was better, tomorrow is going to be worse this is what people have said for generations. And it's not true because the generation behind us was not that bad. Otherwise, we wouldn't be here today to talk to each other, he added.
I think we should not be afraid of that and of course, on the contrary, be quite excited by new possibilities to create in a different way.
