The Rome-Floyd County Fire Department educators are going around to schools and sharing the dangers of vaping.

ROME, Ga. Two firefighters in the Rome-Floyd County Fire Department are going school to school to share the dangers of vaping - and getting students as young as second grade to turn in their vapes.

Shasta Farrer and Linda Patty began planning the program back in August, they said, and started rolling it out to schools in Floyd County in February.

They've been to 22 schools so far, starting with fifth graders and then expanding it through elementary schools and up to middle and high schools - and the impact has been staggering.

"The schools that we go to, we talk to the administrators first, and also the school resource officers, and we have an agreement with them that while we're teaching we actually give an opportunity at the end of class where if students want to turn in their electronic cigarettes they can with no punishment," Farrer told 11Alive's Dalia Perez. "We've had several students who have turned them in because during the class they actually learned the real ingredients in them and they no longer want to have anything to do with them, so it's been a really great program so far."

Farrer recently posted to her Facebook about the program.

"If you havent walked into a middle or high school lately, then you have no idea at what our youth are being faced with on a daily basis," she wrote. "The administrators at the schools are spending up to 80% of their time dealing with 'vape' issues, and its absolutely ridiculous. 'Vapes' are being taken away from 2nd graders. (Yes, you read that correctly.. 2nd grade babies!)"

She wrote that with the program, "eyes are being opened and the truth is now being taught inside middle and high schools."

The firefighters got certified with the Catch My Breath program and took courses with the CDC and Discovery Health before putting their program in place in Floyd County schools. Patty told 11Alive that she and Farrer have really felt like the program has become "bigger than we thought it would."

"Principles, teachers, they're busy - when they can start contacting us and asking for the program, that's when we know it's hit somewhere out there where it needs to be," she said. "That's what's happened. Right now it's a sad situation that it's needed, but we're glad we can be part of maybe making the change or causing this problem to go away."

Farrer said students are learning the consequences of vape use - both the immediate consequences that can come from getting in trouble at school and with parents, and the long-term consequences with their health.

"It's such a newer item, they don't know all of the research about how it does affect your lungs down the road. We teach them everything - truth and fact-based - and it's been a really great program for sure," she said.

Given that the worlds largest tobacco company is fully owned by the Chinese government, the latter has a lot to gain from expanding the market of vaping and heated tobacco products.

As per the amendment, local businesses must register with the tobacco authority, and local manufacturers must obtain an additional licence to prove they are in possession of sufficient funds for production, and for a facility and equipment that meet the set standards.

The tobacco authority added that it will establish a unified national electronic cigarette transaction management platform that all licensed e-cigarette wholesalers and retailers must sell products through, while tax collection and payment of e-cigarettes, shall be implemented in accordance with national taxation laws and regulations.

This means that vaping products and their manufacturers will be regulated strictly by the Chinese government in the same way as cigarettes. Earlier this year Filter had highlighted, that if done right China is about to revolutionize global tobacco harm reduction.

However, the local vape industry is not that optimistic. John Dunne, Director general of the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) believes the industry will be affected negatively. I think in its current form the legislation will have a massive influence on the industry both domestically and internationally, but not all in a good way.

Wang Ning, the President of Chinas Electronic Chamber of Commerce said that these laws should benefit the whole industry. Soliciting opinions on revisions to the Tobacco Monopoly Law and regulating the e-cigarette market should be beneficial to the entire industry.

The China National Tobacco Corporation (CNTC), which sells about 40% of the worlds cigarettes is the worlds largest tobacco company and is fully owned by the Chinese government. Filter had explained that this means that the government has a lot to gain from expanding the market of vaping and heated tobacco products, especially given that 90% of the worlds vape products are manufactured in China.

Chairman of Shenzhen Shikai Technology Wang Shenyi reiterated that sensible regulations could lead to better market. We can look at the next management measures or national standards in a way that wont restrict the industrys development, but in a way that better supervises and regulates the market to make it healthier and better in the long run.

When the new vape restrictions were first announced the local industry took a hit in the stock market. However, the Hong Kong-listed Huabao International had also experienced a further drop in shares when it was announced that its chair and CEO Chu Lam Yiu, was being investigated by Chinese authorities for suspected disciplinary violations.

This led to fall in shares of 65% in January. Up to the date of this announcement, the company has not been provided with any details of the nature of the suspected violations of Ms. Chu that is currently being investigated, the company said in a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange at the time. The business operation of the Group remains normal. The company noted that the probe was being conducted by the Leiyang City Supervisory Committee, a government body based in Hunan province, southern China.

How Will China's New Vape Law Affect the Industry? - Vaping Post

Jackson County residents who want to learn more about teens and vaping have an opportunity to attend a virtual meeting on the topic.

The approximately 45-minute webinar The Youth Vaping Epidemic - Critical Information for North Carolina is on the web at noon Thursday, Feb. 24.

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, Dr. Sasidharan Taravath, a Novant Health pediatric neurologist, and youth anti-vaping advocate Luka Kinard will discuss health issues related to teens and vaping.

As of 2011, smoking among high schoolers had decreased but vaping was on the rise, and in 2019, 27.5 percent of teens in that group reported using an e-cigarette in the last 30 days, said Jim Martin, policy director of the N.C. Tobacco Prevention and Control Division of Public Health in a January 2020 report.

Vaping is an electronic way of ingesting nicotine, but it is not without danger and not enough is known about its health impacts, said Dr. Jarred Tanksley, a radiation oncologist at Harris Regional Hospital.

Vaping is the process of using an electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette, to simulate smoking, both chemically and physically ... by heating a liquid solution containing nicotine to create an inhalable vapor, Tanksley said. It is similar to smoking because it entails the inhalation of nicotine in the physical activity of placing and removing a cigarette from ones lips, which is itself addictive.

Vaping is different from smoking because the person vaping is not exposed to the carcinogens in cigarettes and other tobacco products. But that does not necessarily mean it is safe.

This is not to say that the liquid solution used in e-cigarettes is simply nicotine in water, Tanksley said. It also contains a number of substances that are potentially dangerous, though there is less known about this given the lack of long-term followup.

Additionally, many teens are unaware that they are taking in nicotine when vaping.

In 2018 a study conducted by the National Institute of Health discovered 11.5 percent of students in grades 8-12 thought they were only vaping flavors without nicotine, and A Truth Initiative Study that same year showed 63 percent of Juul users between 15 and 24 years old did not understand Juuls products always contained nicotine, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

By January 2020, the nation had seen approximately 2,500 people hospitalized with medical issues related to EVALI, or e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury, and 60 deaths, Tanksley said.

Lung injuries related to vaping were typically due to acute respiratory distress syndrome, a condition causing fluid buildup in the Aveoli, or air sacs, of the lungs and interfering with the ability to fill the lungs with air and limiting oxygen supply to the rest of the body.

Doctors still do not know the exact causes for this, Tanksley said.

According to the Mayo Clinic, ARDS is usually seen in critically ill patients and those who have significant injuries. The risk of death from ARDS is high, and some survivors will have long-term lung damage.

In North Carolina there were 76 EVALI cases, 58 confirmed and 18 probable, related to vaping as of January 2019. Those cases included patients from age 13 to 72 many of whom were male or young adults and required hospitalization and respiratory support, Martin said.

Vaping might be better than smoking, at least until science understands more, especially when used to wean oneself from cigarettes and other tobacco products, but users should understand that does not mean vaping is safe.

Of course, there is no long-term data, but the general belief is that there are fewer carcinogens within the vaporized liquid, Tanksley said. In addition to lung cancer, tobacco smoking is also related to bladder, pancreatic, head and neck, esophageal, stomach, and kidney cancers, and several non-malignant conditions like heart disease and COPD. Ultimately, though, if one were starting out and choosing between the two, the best option would be neither.

Tanksley could not provide any data on whether vaping has different impacts on the health of young people versus older people.

CONCERNS have been raised about the number of reports of disposable nicotine vaping products being sold to those under the age of 18.

Darlington Borough Councils trading standards team has seen a steep rise in reports it has received from worried parents whose children have been sold these types of vapes, as well as reports from concerned retailers and other agencies.

These reports have revealed some children gather outside certain premises because they know the traders are willing to sell these products to them without checking their ages.

These products are non-rechargeable, single-use devices that are pre-filled with e-liquid that often contain nicotine.

Compliant devices are legal to sell in Great Britain, but only to those aged 18 or over.

Theyare, however, quite often brightly coloured, have fruity flavours and closely resemble highlighters or make-up products, making them particularly attractive to young people.

Vaping puts nicotine into the body. Nicotine is highly addictive and can cause problems with memory, concentration, learning, attention and mood in children.

The vaping liquids also contain certain chemicals that can irritate and damage the lungs as well as increase the risk of other types of addiction as adults.

Trading standards officers, with support from enforcement partners including the police, are already undertaking targeted inspections and stepping up patrols to identify and, where necessary, take action against traders who are deliberately flouting the law.

In parallel, trading standards will be offering legal compliance advice to traders who require it.

Dawn Taylor, trading standards and animal health manager, said: I would like to make it abundantly clear to traders who are prepared to sell these age-restricted products to children, that trading standards will not hesitate to take enforcement action against you.

Councillor Jonathan Dulston, the councils deputy leader, said: I support the positive action already being taken by trading standards and our partners to protect our young people and take traders, willing to break the law, to task.It is also important that the community supports us in this work and reports under-age sales to the trading standards team as soon as possible.

In addition to enforcing the law covering under-age sales of nicotine vaping products, trading standards also deals with age-restriction laws around the sale of such products as alcohol, tobacco, fireworks and aerosol paints.

Increase in vaping products sold to teens in Darlington - The Northern Echo

A new bar with a difference is about to open in Sutton Coldfield at the site of a former tattoo parlour.

Evolution Vaping in Mere Green has moved from its previous site in Cremorne Road to set up in the former Wolf Pack Tattoo and Piercing premises in Mere Green Road in the heart of the suburb in Carlton House.

The venue is owned by mother-and-son duo Sharon and James Burr who both hail from Sutton. The latest shop and bar is just 500 yards from James home in Belwell Lane.

The pair have five shops, in Erdington, Kingstanding, Minworth, Mere Green and the one in Reddicap, also including a bar.

That concept has proved successful, hence the change of premises and current licencing application for permission to sell booze as well as vaping paraphernalia.

Evolution Vaping hopes to open its second bar with two booths and traditional bar stools, at the counter for a small but intimate drinking paradise for vapers. And the venue plans to go further with two tellies installed and the promise of sports on offer. There will also be table football.

James Burr is 39, approaching his 40 th birthday, and is brimming with enthusiasm about his latest venture, which is open as a vape shop, while it awaits the go-ahead to sell drinks.

He said: All its waiting for is licensing to go through and fingers crossed we will have the bar open in mid-March. We have everything ready to go.

We have a couple of booths where people can sit. Its part bar and part shop, with a couple of widescreen TVs.

The bar is at the back of the premises and the shop at the front, with one long counter stretching across both elements.

The bar concept has worked in Reddicap the shop opposite the old Reddicap Tavern, in Hollyfield Road South, now a Pesto Italian restaurant. Its been going three years first as a shop and for the last two years with a bar too.

There is a market for vape bars as traditional pubs treat vapers like smokers and either ban them from the premises or insist upon them vaping outside with their smoking counterparts, not always to their liking.

James said: With smoking banned in pubs, some allow you to vape inside but a lot of them arent.

People are missing having a nicotine while having a drink. Here you can vape without having to stand outside in the cold.

Its somewhere people who vape can be comfortable, where they can buy everything they need, get advice, relax and talk to people into the same sort of thing.

Mere Green is the perfect location for the next bar shop concept as at night it is buzzing he said. It is close to the Mulberry Walk development, close to the Old School House pub, the Mare Pool and Renato Lounge. And around the corner from another mini-bar concept pub Ale Hub.

And James said it was a modern take on a traditional shop type that has been dying out.

He said: Look at us as a modern-day tobacconist. Years ago youd get your custom blend of tobacco and hand engraved pipe.

Its like taking a step back in to that really but with vaping, which has got quite a following.

Behind the counter at his shops are a myriad of flavours. James said there are thousands.

James explained that vaping varieties are made from flavour concentrates like the ones people use for baking, that has moved across into vaping. His business has a wholesale side with a warehouse in Minworth supplying e-liquids to stores.

As well as his flavours, people also make their own combinations and also make their own coils used in vaping devices.

He was keen to point out the vape bar is not a shisha lounge as is set out on the licensing application.

He said: A shisha lounge you burn blocks of compressed, flavoured tobacco. Vaping has the nicotine and flavours but without the tar and other chemicals in cigarettes.

Evolution Vaping began in 2014, with the shops and 6,000 square foot warehouse in Minworth. It employs 50 people with a couple more taken on at Mere Green and jobs being advertised, with a need for specialist vape knowledge or a keen willingness to learn.

James, who is a former John Willmott School pupil and whose mum lives on the Berryfields Estate, said: Im really excited for it. Its 500 yards from my house. A nice little bar I can go down to with my wife.

Because it is on my doorstep, I really want it to do well. Its in a good spot. I think its got good potential. I am looking for other sites as well!

The licensing application is for alcohol to be sold from midday to 11.30pm Monday to Saturday and from midday to 10pm on Sundays. And for the premises to be open from 8am to midnight Monday to Saturday and 10am to 10.30pm on Sundays.

As China's national standards of e-cigarettes come into effective, Chinese industry players will continue to increase their R&D investment and examine the harm reduction of vaping via scientific substantiation.

SMOORE: Chinese Industry Leaders Are Committed to Exploring Harm Reduction of Vaping - BusinessGhana

SINGAPORE - An attempt to smuggle some 21,737 e-vaporisers and refill pods concealed in a lorry entering Singapore went up in smoke last Friday (Feb 11).

The Malaysia-registered lorry, which was transporting a consignment of assorted beverages, was stopped for checks at the Tuas Checkpoint, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Feb 16).

ICA officers found bundles of e-vaporisers - commonly known as vaping pens - and refill pods hidden in the driver's resting area behind the driver's seat.

The Malaysian driver was referred to the Health Sciences Authority for further investigation.

The number of contraband cases detected at ICA checkpoints fell by about 33 per cent to 27,000, down from 41,000 in 2020. The agency attributed this to the low volume of travellers.

However, the authority noted a 40 per cent spike in attempts to smuggle contraband among imports of low-value goods, with 5,860 such cases detected.

ICA told The Straits Times that the most commonly smuggled contraband included e-cigarettes and its accessories, and pharmaceutical products.

These constitute about 80 per cent of all contraband cases detected among imports of low-value goods.

In other cases, huge consignments of contraband cigarettes and drugs were found hidden within legitimate consignments transported by lorries.

ICA noted how in some of these cases, offenders used sophisticated methods of concealment to hide contraband cigarettes.

These include concealing them in air-conditioning units, rolling paper drums and ventilation fans.

ICA warned that similar methods of concealment may be used by terrorists to smuggle arms and explosives into the country.

It said it will continue to conduct security checks to detect and deter such smuggling attempts, to safeguard Singapore's borders.

NEW BOSTON, Texas -- The state rested its case Wednesday afternoon in the capital murder trial of a man accused of killing another while robbing him of THC vaping cartridges.

Kristopher "Flip" Wilson, 26, is one of two men charged in the Dec. 27, 2020, death of Chase Porier. Porier, 27, was shot in the neck and died of his wound in his home on Forest Circle in the Liberty Eylau area of Bowie County before first responders could arrive. Wilson's co-defendant, Brandon "BB" Parkman, 19, is scheduled for trial in June.

Jurors heard Tuesday from an eyewitness who said Wilson was looking through a box of THC cartridges, known as "carts," when he turned, pulled a pistol and shot Porier. Dewayne Terry testified that Wilson and a second man took cartridges and his and Porier's cell phones before leaving in a small cobalt blue car with a black bumper that didn't match.

Terry testified that he and Porier were in the business of selling the cartridges from Porier's home. THC is the active substance found in marijuana.

Wednesday the jury heard from Dallas Medical Examiner Tracy Dyer M.D. Dyer testified under questioning by Assistant District Attorney Randle Smolarz that Porier was shot in the center of his neck and that the bullet traveled downward, severing a large artery. Dyer said Porier would have struggled to breathe in the last minutes of his life.

"If I thought it was accidental, I would have ruled it an accident," Dyer testified in response to questioning from Texarkana lawyer Derric McFarland regarding whether the shooting could have been unintentional.

Dyer said stippling around the wound on Porier's neck is indicative of a gun fired from a short distance away, such as three feet.

Bowie County Sheriff's Office Investigator Scott Sartor testified under questioning by Assistant District Attorney Bradley Akins that after developing Wilson as a suspect, he and McCarver went to a house in Cass County, Texas, thought to be occupied by a girlfriend of Wilson's. When the investigators arrived at the address, they saw a small blue car with a black bumper parked outside.

In the company of two Cass County Sheriff's Office deputies, Sartor and McCarver went to the front entrance. Wilson answered the door, holding a vaping pen in his hand, Sartor testified.

Sartor said Wilson gave officers consent to search the house and "volunteered that he had been there," referring to Porier's home at the time of the shooting.

THC cartridges allegedly like those taken from Porier's residence the night of the murder were found beneath a mattress. A bright pink handgun with an extended magazine was recovered from a dresser drawer.

"There was a dark-colored stain on the gun," Sartor testified.

Also collected were a pair of Wilson's boots and a coat matching a description given by the eyewitness.

Sartor and McCarver testified that Wilson claimed another man named "Trey" whom he had met in a park was the one who shot Porier. In a video clip of an interview with Wilson in Cass County the day after the shooting, Wilson admits he was present when the shooting occurred and admits to taking Terry's and Porier's cell phones.

In the video, Wilson claims he had money with him and intended to pay for vaping cartridges when "Trey" shot Porier. Investigator Chris Allison testified that in a third interview, Wilson admitted to throwing a cell phone out of his car window after the shooting. With an approximate location, Allison found a phone on the side of a highway in Cass County that belonged to Terry.

Under cross-examination, McCarver testified that Wilson did have cash on him at the time of his arrest the day after the shooting.

Two women who were friends with Wilson and Parkman testified that the two defendants came to a birthday gathering at a residence not far from Porier's the evening of the shooting but left for a short time. The women said Parkman, who they called "BB," "didn't look right," when he returned later.

Nathan Tunnel, a firearms examiner with the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab in Tyler, Texas, testified that the bullet recovered from Porier's body was too deformed to make a determination regarding whether it was fired from the pink gun recovered from Wilson's home.

Amber Moss, a DNA analyst with the crime lab in Garland, Texas, testified that the stain observed on the pink gun by law enforcement was blood and that it "most likely" contained a mixture of Wilson's and Porier's DNA within a high degree of statistical probability.

Moss said a stain from Wilson's left boot also "most likely" was a mixture of Wilson's and Porier's DNA as was a stain collected from the coat taken from Wilson's home.

After the state rested its case Wednesday afternoon, 102nd District Judge Jeff Addison placed the jury in an evening recess with instructions to return to the Bowie County courthouse Thursday morning to begin hearing testimony from witnesses for the defense.

If convicted of capital murder, Wilson faces life without parole as the state is not seeking the death penalty.

A teenager ended up on life support after waking up with what she thought was a cold.

But Juliet Roberts was actually battling lung damage and pneumonia caused by vaping since she was 14.

The 18-year-old was hospitalized in January after struggling to breathe.

She claims doctors told her years of constant vaping had ravaged her lungs and this, plus a reaction to a disposable vape, sparked pneumonia.

After being rushed to hospital Juliet ended up on life support for five days, and still needs to be on oxygen.

Now recovering at home, Juliet is still at risk of having a heart attack due to the strain on her weak lungs.

The waitress decided to share shocking photos of herself on life support to warn people ofthe dangers of vaping.

Juliet, from Mount Pleasant, Tennessee, US, said: I woke up feeling like I had a cold and just really didnt feel good, and as the days progressed I started feeling worse.

Three days later, I was sitting in my room and I went to stand up and I fell back down because I couldnt breathe, I thought I was going to pass out.

I called my boyfriend and told him I needed to go to the emergency room because I could tell something was wrong.

As soon as they checked my vitals three nurses rushed in because my oxygen was so low they couldnt believe I was walking.

After getting all the testing done my condition started worsening very quickly and I dont remember much after that.

From what Ive been told they put me on a ventilator and when that wasnt enough they put me on life support.

The doctors told me that if I hadnt made it there that night I wouldve lost my life. It was very scary.

They told me I was basically dying, Im so glad I went to the hospital when I did.

Juliet startedvapingat 14 when her school friends started using them and says she quickly became addicted, going through a disposable e-cigarette every two weeks.

It is rare, but people often teenagers have ended up with severe lung damage due to vaping.

The NHS advises vapes are far less harmful than cigarettes and can help you quit smoking for good, but they are not completely risk-free.

Adding: Almost all of the harm from smoking comes from the thousands of other chemicals in tobacco smoke, many of which are toxic.

She told how the infection that nearly killed her made her lungs appear white on the x-ray, rather than the typical black depiction of healthy soft tissue.

Juliet said: When you get a lung x-ray its supposed to be black and the only white youre supposed to see is your ribs.

But my x-ray you could almost not even count some of my ribs because of how white it was.

That was because of the damage from thevapeand the pneumonia which I got from vaping.

Juliet has been told she will be out of work for between three to 12 months as her lungs recover.

She has to be careful to avoid catching any illnesses that could further strain her weak lungs.

The teen said: Right now my lungs are working so hard that if I overdo myself Im at risk of a heart attack my heart rate jumps to 150 when I go up the stairs, which is very dangerous.

My lungs will never go back to what they were before, they will just get strong enough for me to breathe on my own again.

They told me leaving the hospital that if I even got a common cold Id end up right back where I was because of how weak my lungs are at the minute.

My friends had to get Covid tests to come and see me just to make sure it was safe.

Juliet says doctors have warned her that because of the lasting damage done to her lungs, using a vape again could kill her.

After her traumatic experience the teen, who vows never to vape again, now hopes to encourage others to quit, insisting its not worth it.

Juliet said: I havent hit one since the day I went to the hospital and I dont plan on doing it ever again.

The doctor told me that it would end my life and thats all the information I need to quit for good.

I just want people to know that its really not worth it. I want it to be known that it is as dangerous as people say it is and its a lot more common than people think it is.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Vaping among youth is at the forefront of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Spectrum Healths Tobacco and Nicotine treatment efforts.

We know that nicotine is very harmful to the developing brain, said Caitlin Schucker, a tobacco treatment specialist at Spectrum Health.

On Thursday night, the groups held a virtual seminar to discuss efforts parents and the community can make to help prevent their children from vaping. Shucker joined the WOOD TV Live Desk Friday morning to highlight some of those specific efforts that can be made immediately.

Really just sitting down and having those conversations with your youth. We know it is never really too early to do so. The average age of trying a tobacco product in Newaygo county was actually 11 years old, said Schucker.

Shucker added that the most important factors when talking to your child about vaping are withholding judgement and not focusing on consequences resulting from their actions.

In terms of specific resources to use, Shucker mentioned one specific website discussed during Thursday nights virtual seminar. My Life, My Quitwas created by the same group that created the adult Michigan tobacco quit line. Shucker ended by saying they have specially trained coaches who work with teens on helping them quit vaping.
