If society must be transformed into Technocracy, then the humans who live there must be transformed into Transhumans. In other words, a perfectly efficient, utopian society envisioned by Technocrats would be quickly soiled if it were inhabited by weak-minded and imperfect humans in their present form.

This is exactly why we see many Technocrats who also identify as Transhumans. Some well-known names that come to mind include Elon Musk (Tesla), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Ray Kurzweil (Google) and Peter Thiel (PayPal).

To grasp this larger picture, it is necessary to address three questions:

In 1939,The Technocratmagazine wrote:

Technocracy is the science of social engineering, the scientific operation of the entire social mechanism to produce and distribute goods and services to the entire population.

The magazine went on to explain that Technocracy eschewed capitalism, free enterprise, elected politicians and that it sought to create a resource-based economic system where scientists, engineers and technicians would be the sole planners and controllers of society.

Many Technocrats today have no idea of the deeper goals of Technocracy but nevertheless use their expertise to run portions of society without any regard for Americas traditional political processes. Rule by experts isarule, but it is only one subservient part of the overarching goal of replacing our current economic system with Sustainable Development, aka Technocracy, Green Economy, Green New Deal, etc.

One modern champion of Transhumanism, Dr. Max More, wrote:

Transhumanism is a loosely defined movement that has developed gradually over the past two decades. Transhumanism is a class of philosophies of life that seek the continuation and acceleration of the evolution of intelligent life beyond its currently human form and human limitations by means of science and technology, guided by life-promoting principles and values.(Max More, 1990)

Transhumans seek to apply advanced technology to the condition of man in order to take over the evolutionary process and literally create Humans 2.0. The holy grail of Transhumanism is to achieve immortality, but in the process they intend to weed out the more negative characteristics of Humans 1.0: their warlike nature and their tendency to be argumentative, inconsistent, unreliable, etc. This is genetic cleansing on the largest possible scale.

Scientism is a religious proposition that was first presented by the French philosopher Henri De Saint-Simon (1760-1825). He wrote,

A scientist, my dear friends, is a man who foresees; it is because science provides the means to predict that it is useful, and the scientists are superior to all other men.

While true science explores the natural world using the time-tested scientific method of repeated experimentation and validation, Saint-Simons Scientism is a speculative, metaphysical worldview about the nature and reality of the universe and mans relation to it.

Saint-Simon proposed that the religious leadership of his day should literally be replaced by a priesthood of scientists and engineers, who would interpret the oracle of science in order to make declarations to society on the human actions necedssary to lead mankind to Utopia. Thus, science would be elevated to a state of immutable godhood, worshiped by its followers, who are led by its priests.

Technocracy and Transhumanism are both based on Scientism.

Both believe that advanced science, engineering and technology are the exclusive instruments of progress. Both are adept at promising benefits that are always just around the corner, but that never materialize. Both are expert at manipulating governments to supply taxpayer resources to fund their respective projects. Both believe they are hijacking evolutionary processes to create a future engineered by technologists.

An even more substantive connection between Technocracy and Transhumanism is that they both see no future for the world as it exists today. Radical environmentalists like Greta Thunberg believe the world has only 12 years left before a climate apocalypse destroys us all. Elon Musk uses his billions to escape Earth by funding his SpaceX rocket company with the ultimate intent of colonizing Mars. Jeff Bezos privately funds his Blue Origin for the same purpose to colonize Mars. They both have stated that the only future for mankind is in outer space, populating the cosmos because Earth is going to hit a dead end when its natural resources run out.

In short, Technocracy and Transhumanism are both anti-human. Technocracy, channeled by the United Nations as Sustainable Development, believes that the earth can only support one billion or so humans. Furthermore, all humans are considered as mere resources on a par with herd animals such as cattle. Transhumanism believes Humanity 1.0 is as good as dead and the only hope for the future of man is for Transhuman scientists to invent Humanity 2.0 and leave Earth altogether.

In one sense, Technocracys strict allocation of resources and energy only mark a containment pattern while they build and test space travel technology.

This is not new thinking. In 1872 Winwood Reade wroteThe Martyrdom of Manin which he stated as clearly as any modern Transhumanist or Technocrat could:

Disease will be extirpated; the causes of decay will be removed; immortality will be invented. And then, the earth being small, mankind will migrate into space, and will cross the airless Saharas which separate planet from planet, and sun from sun. The earth will become a Holy Land which will be visited by pilgrims from all the quarters of the universe. Finally, men will master the forces of Nature; they will become themselves architects of systems, manufacturers of worlds.

These bodies which now we wear belong to the lower animals; our minds have already outgrown them; already we look upon them with contempt. A time will come when Science will transform them by means which we cannot conjecture, and which, even if explained to us, we could not now understand, just as the savage cannot understand electricity, magnetism, steam.(p. 179)

In light of the above, I hope you realize that you simply cannot look at Technocrats and Transhumanists and pin labels on them like Marxist, Socialist, Communist or Fascist. Transhumanists and Technocrats represent a new type of radicalness that the world has never seen before.

It means nothing when people gather to discuss philosophical issues and new ways of doing things, unless they have the means to do what they claim. Jeff Bezos isnt waiting for NASA to colonize Mars; he is building his own spaceship with his own money. Likewise, Elon Musk is self-funding his own space fleet. The late global financier, David Rockefeller, didnt wait for governments to flesh out a new economic order, but rather used his own funds to create the Trilateral Commission with its own economic transformations.

Thanks to the United Nations adoption of Technocracy as Sustainable Development, its Agenda 21 policies have been spread to every corner of the planet, including every town and county in America. In total ignorance of the trap being laid for them, people are now demanding more, not less. Global warming is being used as the battering ram to break down the current economic system, paving the way for the only alternative being offered: Sustainable Development, aka Technocracy.

Lest you think that the scientific elite are benevolent pure-hearted idealists simply working for the betterment of mankind, I would caution you to remember the late Jeffrey Epstein, who plumbed the depths of depravity, debauchery, sex trafficking and blackmail and who was also a member of the elitist Trilateral Commission for several years. Epstein was a Technocrat and Transhumanist who hoped to achieve eternal life within his lifetime. Alas, he failed.

To use the word radical to describe Technocracy and Transhumanism would be a gross understatement. They are both outside the bounds of objective reality. And worse, they are dragging the rest of us along with them.

Since 2012, Transitions Film Festival has showcased short, feature and VR documentaries addressing our world, and those helping to shape it and make it better through social, environmental and technological innovations. One of the ongoing missions of Transitions and its curated selection of films is to help us envision a better world, and think about what we can do to make that vision come true and this year, across its more than 20 virtual sessions available nationwide (and a small selection of Melbourne screenings), the festival continues that.

There's an intimate portrait of an environmental activist. . . A fictional narrative legal drama. . . An illumination of humans' relationship with water. . . Festival Director Daniel Simons gives us more information about the 2022 event.

Tell us a bit about the 2022 Transitions Film Festival. The Transitions Film Festival is a social and environmental impact festival that uses the power of film to highlight the biggest and most urgent issues of our time. We focus on showcasing solutions to society's greatest challenges, as well as the mind-blowing technological innovations that have the potential to change life as we know it. This years festival covers our usual themes of climate change, artificial intelligence, transhumanism, environmental activism, social enterprise, regenerative agriculture and the power of music to change the world. Due to COVID, we are mostly online, with all films available nationally, but were also hosting a handful of free screenings in Melbourne, including one at The Capitol Theatre on 20 February.

As Festival Director, what is it that you set out to achieve every year you present it? Festivals like ours can play a vital role in a number of ways. We curate a small selection of films from a huge number of entries, so the audience knows that the films we select deserve their attention. We focus on films that are about the most important issues of our time and we highlight content that is on the cutting-edge of science, innovation and social change. We also aim for the festival to create massive changes in peoples lives and to bring them into the environmental and changemaker eco-systems of Australia. Importantly, the festivals focus on solutions and the heroes creating change around the world gives people hope and a feeling of empowerment at a time when other news media is filled with narratives of doom and hopelessness. With so much entertainment out there, people can be hesitant to watch important documentaries like the ones we feature as part of our programme. Having the films featured in a festival is often an impetus for time-poor and overwhelmed people to watch films that they would not otherwise choose to watch. Then, like a cold shower, they dont want to get in at first, they come out feeling invigorated, alive and ready to take on the world.

And why do you think a festival like Transitions is important to witness? If you look at the recent reaction to Dont Look Up which was the second highest debut Netflix movie of all time getting 360 million hours of viewing in its first 28 days you know people are hungry for change. The problem with 'Dont Look Up' and other Hollywood films that deal with climate change and other social and environmental issues, is that they can be cynical and demoralising. Festivals like ours give hope and show the amazing range of solutions we have at our disposal and ready to deploy now. If enough people know about these ideas and are hungry enough to create change, we can solve all of our greatest problems within decades. And, as Obama said we are the first generation to feel the effects of climate change and the last who can do anything about it, so why wouldn't you want to spend all of your mental time and energy making sure that there is a future for the human race, and the rest of the inhabitants of the planet. But it's not just a festival about climate change, it's everything change.

How do you hope audiences respond to this years programme? Our festival logline is inspiration, empowerment, impact. So we hope that our audiences come away from the festival inspired, empowered and ready to create impact in the world. In our exit surveys we ask our audience what influence the festival had on their lives. The best answers are always from those who respond that, as a result of the festival, they decided to change their course of study or their career. Its not about people watching a 90-minute movie and starting to use a KeepCup, it's about people changing who they are and dedicating their entire lives to what is most important. We dont just want people to be entertained, we want them to connect to the changemaker communities of the world and help rewrite the future, while we still have time.

If the genetically modified pig heart transplanted into a Maryland man in Januaryan instance of xenotransplantation, or the transplanting of organs across different specieshad been a mechanical one (such as a hip or knee replacement), wed be squarely in the realm of The Body Scout, an impressive debut novel published in September by Western Albemarle High School (WAHS) graduate Lincoln Michel and named one of the 10 Best Science Fiction and Fantasy novels of 2021 by the New York Times. Set about 100 years in the future, the novels underlying premise is that technology is slowly replacing humanitya possibility endorsed by the philosophy of transhumanism. In the future dystopian world Michel creates, weak or diseased organs and limbs are routinely replaced, or upgraded, with improved organ implants, grafts, bionic replacements, and other enhancementsat a hefty price, of course.

Protagonist Kobo, a former player for the Cyborg League and current scout for the Future League Baseball (FLB), is known as an oiler due to his bionic arm and eye. His sometime girlfriend, Deadeye Dolores Zamora, wears cybernetic goggles to compensate for her deafnessgoggles that lip read for her, provide access to her workplace, and record everything she sees for later playback or zooming. I still liked to think baseball was a game of technique and talent, not chemistry and cash for biopharm teams (a typically sly pun conflating farm team with pharmaceutical), players were the blocks of marble. The drugs sculpted them into stars, he reflects. But these drugs and upgrades can also kill you. After witnessing the gruesome death of his adoptive brother during a Monsanto Mets baseball game on live TV, he sets out to find the murderer, sending him on a series of madcap adventures involving flooded New York subway hideouts, a Janus club where his scuba suit allows him to occupy anothers body, and illegal, underground cloning labs. Along the way he becomes involved with the rebel Edenists, who simply believe men are supposed to live in the vessel they are born into. He finds more deep-seated corruption than he ever imagined, surviving violent attempts to stop him. Familial love and devotion win out as Kobo risks everything to solve the mystery of what or who killed his brother.

Michels wildly imaginative dystopia carries current trends to the utmost extreme, with flying cars, ubiquitous screens, genetically modifiedor even drone models ofwildlife, and cyborgs (humans with bionic parts) as common as robots. Survivors of the Apex Zika pandemic live in cloud condos above the dense smog of half-underwater Manhattan, where seagull drones deliver to your table the lab-created restaurant food you ordered from a holographic image on your plate, and zootech mosquitoes are used as weapons. Everything from parks to sports teams is owned and named for a corporate sponsor, Neanderthals have been cloned to once again walk among us, and the first test-tube president Newman controls the Department of Human Limits. This is a world that none of us would want to live in, but which is so believable it makes your skin crawl.

What sets this book apart is its brilliant writingher look slid into me like a splinterand delightfully irreverent satire. The league had banned drone surrogates a couple seasons ago with the No Heartbeat No Seat policy, we are told. A Growth Cola ad advises, The climate has changed. Your body should too. Anti-Maxxer (a parody of both anti-vaxxer and anti-masker) cults stage protests against the mortal sin of upgrading, and SoCal separatists are suspected of terrorism. With shades of Huxleys Brave New World (1932)Kobo chain smokes eraser cigarettes to numb his emotionsand the Terry Gilliams black comedy film Brazil (1985), The Body Scout is a masterful amalgam of mystery, sports, sci-fi, and horroror as the Brooklyn Rail put it, a mashup of cyberpunk, noir detective novel, and literary fiction centered on the premise of what it means to be humanall wrapped up in a wickedly satiric package reminiscent of Kurt Vonnegut. Michels inventive writing, biting satire, and clever neologismslike skystabber, creepeasy, and dewdroppermake the book fun to read in spite of its abundance of violence. Bomb magazine dubbed it sci-fi noir; I admit that neither scifi nor noir are genres I typically enjoy, but if you do, you are sure to love this brilliant romp through both.

I had some fantastic teachers at WAHS, says Michel, who graduated in 2001. All of my English teachers, but especially my philosophy teacher, Mrs. Marshall, introduced me to authors and thinkers who have been important to me. Italo Calvino and Franz Kafka really opened my mind to the possibilities of fiction and made me want to be a writer. Kobos name is inspired by Kobo Abe (1924-1993), a Japanese author and playwright whose absurdist, surrealist fiction included The Woman in the Dunes, published in 1962 and adapted to film in 1964.

After earning a BA at George Washington University and an MFA in fiction writing at Columbia University, he now lives in Brooklyn and teaches at Columbia as well as Sarah Lawrence College. I teach speculative fiction courses that look at the different modes and methods of horror fiction, science fiction, fabulism, etc. He began work on The Body Scout in 2017. It was finished and sent to editors a month before COVID hit in early 2020, so the fact that it takes place in a world ravaged by pandemics is just one of those strange science fiction coincidences.

When asked what genre his work falls into, Michel replied, Before I even had a title for the novel, I wrote science fiction noir baseball thriller novel at the top of my notebook. So, I guess I always conceived of it as a mashup of genres. I think its a really exciting time to be writing work that crosses the border between so-called literary fiction and genre fiction. When I was younger, there was a sense these were separate worlds with nothing to say to each other. Thankfully, a lot of writers before me spent time kicking out bricks in the wall between genre fiction and literary fiction, and I think most younger students dont worry about these distinctions. These days, writers like Kelly Link and Carmen Maria Machado compete for the Pulitzer and National Book Award.

On the subject of transhumanism, he pointed out that when it comes to new technologies, the question always comes down to who the technology is implemented by, who controls it, and what power structures are shaping it. In the novel, I wanted to present a range of ideological and personal reactions to new technologies, and to emphasize that technology can be liberating and oppressive simultaneously, depending on the power structures in place.

Cyberpunk Noir Sports Fiction, Anyone? - The Crozet Gazette

S.and after the first evening you are already saturated with the Sanremo Festival, tonight on Rai 2 at 9.30 pm it arrives on first tv Replicasfilm with Keanu Reeves halfway between science fiction, thriller and family melodrama. A rambling film, but enjoyable in its own way (especially for B-Movie lovers), which he certifies as the actor of the trilogy Matrix is now the undisputed king of the sci-fi genre.

Directed, with a heavy hand, by Jeffrey Machmanoff, the film unfortunately it suffers too much from some now obsolete themes. And the good acting performance of the protagonist is not enough to make it exciting too complex a story and excessively layered. Even for the most attentive and patient spectator.

William Foster (Keanu Reeves) is a scientist who deals with cloning and bioengineering. Man has been trying for some time to graft the neural mind of newly dead subjects into robotic bodies but every attempt has always been in vain. But when, due to an accident, the man loses his wife and three children Matt, Sophie and ZoeWilliam decides to experiment on them with new techniques which perhaps will allow him to carry out his experiment.

The scientist thus he transfers their minds to clones but unfortunately the little Zoe is excluded due to the lack of a fourth cloning tank. Now William will have to transfer the brain to the clones and erase all memories of Zoe but will he be able to perform this complicated procedure? AND will the replicas be in all respects like the originals?

For two decades now, the combination of Keanu Reeves and science fiction should, in theory, always be a winner. Just think of the success of the trilogy Matrixof the fictional saga of John Wick and, even earlier, the little cult of 1995 Johnny Mnemonic. It is therefore surprising that the actor got involved in a project that, on paper, seems to have already lost from the start. Replicas in fact it offers immediately an old imaginary, made up of clones and virtual reality which ten years ago had already gone out of fashion.

Not to mention the speech on the so-called transhumanism, or the theory that advocates a total fusion of the human body with technology. Although the theme, albeit dated, lends itself to numerous reflections, the film chooses the way of hard and pure entertainment.

With a turn, about half an hour from the end, which leads to conspiracy thriller, when the shady bosses of the protagonist steal the precious clones from him, but unfortunately the film does not manage to ennoble all the elements put in place.

Replicas thus becomes a b-movie with a thousand implications left halfway, with bad digital effects and a plot halfway between Frankenstein And The Island. Only the performance of Keanu Reeves is saved, forced to say many stupid things, and frankly incomprehensible if you are not a scientist, but with a deep conviction. AND his method of acting, not at all emphatic, gives complex nuances to a tragic but too monotonous character.

"What ideas, if embraced, would pose the greatest threat to the welfare of humanity?" That question was posed to eight prominent policy intellectuals by the editors of Foreign Policy in its September/October issue (not yet available online). One of the eight savants consulted was Francis Fukuyama, professor of international political economy at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, author of Our Posthuman Future: Consequences of the Biotechnology Revolution, and a member of the President's Council on Bioethics. His choice for the world's most dangerous idea? Transhumanism.

In his Foreign Policy article, Fukuyama identifies transhumanism as "a strange liberation movement" that wants "nothing less than to liberate the human race from its biological constraints." Sounds ominous, no? But wait a minute, isn't human history (and prehistory) all about liberating more and more people from their biological constraints? After all, it's not as though most of us still live in our species' "natural state" as Pleistocene hunter-gatherers.

Human liberation from our biological constraints began when an ancestor first sharpened a stick and used it to kill an animal for food. Further liberation from biological constraints followed with fire, the wheel, domesticating animals, agriculture, metallurgy, city building, textiles, information storage by means of writing, the internal combustion engine, electric power generation, antibiotics, vaccines, transplants, and contraception. In a sense, the goal toward which humanity has been striving for millennia has been to liberate ourselves from more and more of our ancestors' biological constraints.

What is a human capacity anyway? Biologist Richard Dawkins has propounded the notion of an extended phenotype. Genes not only mold the bodies of organisms but also shape their behaviors. Some of those behaviors result in the creation of inanimate objects that help organisms to survive and reproduce, such as beaver dams and bird nests.

Our ancestors had no wings; now we fly. Our ancient forebears could not hear one another over 1,000 miles; now we phone. And our Stone Age progenitors averaged 25 years of life; now we live 75. Thanks to our knack for technological innovation, humanity has by far the largest extended phenotype of all creatures on planet Earth. Nothing could be more natural to human beings than striving to liberate ourselves from biological constraints.

But Fukuyama would undoubtedly respond that Pleistocene hunter-gatherers are still recognizably human, no different in their innate capacities than people living today. What transhumanists seek is very different. They want to go beyond current innate human capacities. They want to change human bodies and brains.

Of course, humans have been deliberately changing their bodies through athletic training and their brains through schooling. Nevertheless, Fukuyama has a point. Can one be so transformed by technology as to be no longer human? "Our good characteristics are intimately connected to our bad ones: If we weren't violent and aggressive, we wouldn't be able to defend ourselves; if we didn't have feelings of exclusivity, we wouldn't be loyal to those close to us; if we never felt jealousy, we would also never feel love," asserts Fukuyama. He seems to be arguing that to be a human being one must possess all of the emotional capacities characteristic of our species. If biotechnological manipulations removed our ability to feel emotions like anger, hate, or violence, we would in some sense not be human beings any more.

Let's say that future genetic engineers discover a gene for suicidal depression, and learn how to suppress the gene, or adjust it. Would fixing it make subsequent generations non-human beings? After all, most people today do not fall into suicidal depressions, and those happy people are no less human than, say, Sylvia Plath.

Depression can already be fixed for many people by means of Prozac or Paxil. Surely, taking serotonin re-uptake inhibitors does not make people other or less than human. Sufferers of depression will tell you that the drugs restore them to their true selves. It seems unreasonable to claim that in order to qualify as human beings, we all must have the capacity to succumb to berserker rage or religious ecstasy.

"The first victim of transhumanism might be equality," writes Fukuyama. "If we start transforming ourselves into something superior, what rights will these enhanced creatures claim, and what rights will they possess when compared to those left behind?" Fukuyama seems to be entertaining an X-Men-like fantasy in which enhanced posthumans seek to destroy unenhanced naturals. But where Fukuyama is a bit coy, left-leaning bioethicists George Annas, Lori Andrews, and Rosario Isasi are brutally blunt:

The new species, or "posthuman," will likely view the old "normal" humans as inferior, even savages, and fit for slavery or slaughter. The normals, on the other hand, may see the posthumans as a threat and if they can, may engage in a preemptive strike by killing the posthumans before they themselves are killed or enslaved by them. It is ultimately this predictable potential for genocide that makes species-altering experiments potential weapons of mass destruction, and makes the unaccountable genetic engineer a potential bioterrorist.

Let's take their over-the-top scenario down a notch or two. The enhancements that are likely to be available in the relatively near term to people now living will be pharmacologicalpills and shots to increase strength, lighten moods, and improve memory. Consequently, such interventions could be distributed to nearly everybody who wanted them. Later in this century, when safe genetic engineering becomes possible, it will enable parents to give their children beneficial genes for improved health and intelligence that other children already get naturally. Thus, safe genetic engineering in the long run is more likely to ameliorate than to exacerbate human inequality.

In any case, political equality has never rested on the facts of human biology. In prior centuries, when humans were all "naturals," tyranny, slavery, and purdah were common social and political arrangements. In fact, political liberalism is already the answer to Fukuyama's question about human and posthuman rights. In liberal societies the law is meant to apply equally to all, no matter how rich or poor, powerful or powerless, brilliant or stupid, enhanced or unenhanced.

The crowning achievement of the Enlightenment is the principle of tolerance, of putting up with people who look differently, talk differently, worship differently, and live differently than we do. In the future, our descendants may not all be natural homo sapiens, but they will still be moral beings who can be held accountable for their actions. There is no reason to think that the same liberal political and moral principles that apply to diverse human beings today wouldn't apply to relations among future humans and posthumans.

But what if enhanced posthumans took the Nietzschean superman option? What if they really did see unenhanced people "as inferior, even savages, and fit for slavery or slaughter"?

Let's face it, plenty of unenhanced humans have been quite capable of believing that millions of their fellow unenhanced humans were inferiors who needed to be eradicated. However, as liberal political institutions have spread and strengthened, they have increasingly restrained technologically superior groups from automatically wiping out less advanced peoples (which was usual throughout most of history). I suspect that this dynamic will continue in the future as biotechnology, nanotechnology, and computational technologies progressively increase people's capabilities and widen their choices.

In his famous book The End of History and the Last Man, Fukuyama declared that we are witnessing "the end point of mankind's ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government." Fair enough. But for Fukuyama, the end of history is a "sad time" because "daring, courage, imagination, and idealism will be replaced by economic calculation." Also, he claims, "in the post-historical period there will be neither art nor philosophy, just the perpetual caretaking of the museum of human history." How ironic that Fukuyama now spends his time demonizing transhumanism, a nascent philosophical and political movement that epitomizes the most daring, courageous, imaginative, and idealistic aspirations of humanity.

"The environmental movement has taught us humility and respect for the integrity of nonhuman nature. We need a similar humility concerning our human nature. If we do not develop it soon, we may unwittingly invite the transhumanists to deface humanity with their genetic bulldozers and psychotropic shopping malls," concludes Fukuyama. I say, bring on those genetic bulldozers and psychotropic shopping malls that help people to live healthier, smarter, and happier lives.

The actual number of people injured or dead after receiving the vaccine is already in the millions. And all the vaccinated are expected to die from the vaccine within a few years.

The statistics are being distorted to hide the genocide. Now if someone dies within 14 days of receiving the vaccine they are considered to be unvaccinated. And if they have only received one shot, they are also considered to be unvaccinated.

The hospitals are full of the vaccinated with vaccine side effects. There still is no virus. There is no delta, just vaccine injuries.

Whistleblowers testify that there were no excess deaths in 2020 at all, and as soon as they started the vaccine campaign, deaths increased and all were vaccinated.

Loop Hero | PC, Switch | M It may look old school, but Loop Hero combines a few of the most voguish current genres (deck-building, roguelites) with a delightfully original horror tale for an experience you can obsess over for hours, with just the right amounts of tension and surprise.

Loop Hero is a game of unexpected depth and storytelling.

Axiom Verge 2 | PC, PS4, Switch | PG Utterly remarkable given its the years-long work of a single person, Axiom Verge 2 is a pixelated transhumanism adventure that will appeal to Castlevania and Metroid fans, but its alternate Earths and satisfying upgrades give it a vibe all of its own.

Deaths Door | PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, XBO, XBSX | PG Borrowing from both the Zelda and Souls playbooks, Deaths Door sees a workaday reaper thrown into a deathless world when one of their quarries goes unexpectedly missing. Bleak, charming and with razor sharp combat.

I cant say reaping souls as a bow-wielding crow was at the top of my wish list this year, but Deaths Door is phenomenal.

It probably goes without saying, but if youre looking to buy games for a loved one the first thing you should do is find out what they want. If you cant ask them directly, that means looking into what systems they use, what games they already have access to and what they like to play.

For kids specifically, some good 2021 shouts not listed above include Pokmon Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl (on Switch), Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (on PS5) or Hot Wheels Unleashed (on everything). But many players will also get a lot of mileage out of gift cards.

Ratchet & Clank is a colourful, exciting space adventure for tweens and up.

You could just get them money to load up onto their account of choice (Xbox, PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, Apple App Store, Steam Wallet) so they can buy digital games. But if they play one specific game they might prefer that specific currency (Roblox, Minecraft, FIFA, Grand Theft Auto).

There are also a couple of good value subscription services, and they work for a whole family which adds even more bang for your buck. Apple Arcade gives access to heaps of good quality, ad-free and gambling-free games on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. Xbox Game Pass is for Xbox consoles or PC, and gets you access to more great games than you could conceivably play in a year (including Forza, Halo and Psychonauts from the list above).

The Aussie-made Artful Escape is another great 2021 game available on Game Pass.

In terms of machines that play video games, which arent computers or phones, heres a rundown of whats on the shelves in 2021 or what your family may already be using.

The Nintendo Switch is the most popular console on the market right now, and its easy to see why. It combines Nintendos rich history of handheld systems with big-screen HD graphics, and its own family-friendly games with the best indies and classics. The standard Switch is around $470 and includes everything you need to play portable or connected to a TV. The nicer Switch OLED is $540 and has a bigger, nicer screen. Theres also a $330 Switch Lite, which is handheld only and does not connect to a TV. All the Switch models are currently in stock, so it shouldnt be too hard to nab one for a gift, but youd still be smart to do it ASAP.

The PlayStation 4 is getting a bit long in the tooth, but there are still many new games available for it, plus an incredible library going back eight years. It would also make an excellent first console given the sheer number of games available, if you can find one of the old things in stock. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 5 is a new and enhanced machine that goes for $749. It can play all PS4 games as well as PS5-specific titles, so if youre buying games for a PS5 owner make sure to check if theres a PS5 version available. As you may know PS5 stock is extremely limited, so you may need to contact retailers, keep on top of online sellers and cross your fingers to get one.

As with PS4, the old Xbox One systems are getting tough to find. But if you set your mind to it, you could get a 2016 Xbox One S for dirt cheap, which makes an excellent Game Pass console and 4K Blu-ray player. The newest machine is the $749 Xbox Series X, which is a powerful console for games both old and new, but like the PS5 it is very scarce so the same advice about chasing retailers applies. You might also consider the excellent $499 Xbox Series S, which is more available and plays all the games the more powerful Series X can, just at lower visual fidelity. The other main trade-off is theres no disc drive; downloaded games only.

As gene-based mRNA vaccines from Moderna are being designed and tested at warp speeds to fight Covid-19, this is also bringing the debate over transhumanism into the forefront.

Transhumanism is a type of futurist philosophy aimed at transforming the human species by means of biotechnologies. Transhumanists see disease, aging and death as undesirable and unnecessary, and aim to transform human beings into post-human species with greater capacities than those of present human beings.

The philosophy is based on secular humanism and sees human nature as an evolutionary work-in-progress with room for improvement and enhancement. However, it is more radical in that it promotes not only traditional means of improving human nature such as education and cultural refinement, but also direct application of medicine and technology to overcome basic biological limits.

Transhumanists give special attention to genetic engineering, robotics, molecular nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, and the Covid-19 pandemic is providing gene-based vaccines a chance to break through into the global health market.

Moderna and gene-editing

Currently there are various companies such as Inovio, Moderna and CanSino Biologics that are testing mRNA and DNA vaccines to counter SARS coronavirus-2 (SARS CoV-2) which causes Covid-19, but Moderna is the front runner that recently nabbed $472 million from U.S. governments Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to develop the vaccine. This is in addition to the $483 million it had already received back in April, bringing its total funding to $955 million.

With U.S. government funding at nearly $1 billion for one company, Moderna may be too big to fail. However, this is perplexing for a company that has never produced a single vaccine. According to a CNN report, Moderna was only established in 2010, has never brought a product to market, nor gotten any of its nine or so vaccine candidates approved for use by the FDA.

However, it has been a long-term Pentagon contractor for biodefense, working closely with Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) on gene-editing and mRNA therapeutics. DARPA is focused on developing emerging disruptive technologies to maintain a competitive edge over adversaries, including many transhuman projects such as genetic engineering and soldier enhancement via robotics.

In the case of Moderna and mRNA therapeutics, DNA vaccines is considered a new paradigm that would disrupt the pharmaceutical industry. Its vision is to harness a new technology that synthesizes messenger RNA, or mRNAwhich is an instruction manual in every living cell for creating proteinto prompt the human body to make its own medicine.

So instead of injecting a piece of virus into a person to stimulate the immune system, the synthesized genes would be shot into the body whereby the genes are edited, deleted, added, to re-engineer human DNA to resist the disease. If successful, scientists hope DNA vaccines could be a transformative treatment for heart disease, metabolic and genetic diseases, kidney failure and even cancer. Moreover, it could be an effective form of biodefense to protect the population against biological warfare, which is also the mandate for DARPA and BARDA.

Transhumanism and hybrids

Indeed, DARPA is also developing other forms of human enhancement in addition to gene editing. Already scientists are merging robotics with the human body in brain-to-computer interface (BCI), wherein individuals with physical injuries can regain their functions, and soldiers become smarter and more powerful through the fusing of their brain with machines.

In a way, the Pentagon is now building real iron man similar to the American superhero based on the Marvel Comics character. Soldiers in exoskeleton suits are physically more powerful than those without, while other soldiers with bionic limbs perform better than adversaries with human limbs. When one adds artificial intelligence with BCI, the sky is the limit for an army of these genetically modified and robotically enhanced humanoids.

But U.S. is not the only country engaged in human enhancement and transhumanism, as Russia and China are also in hot pursuit with exoskeletons, vaccines and brain implants. As this competition gains traction, one wonders what the future of their militaries may look like as human beings are steadily integrated with machines to become armies of iron man.
