Nigel Kerner Greys Harvesting of Souls via Transhumanism, ClandestineTimelord

Posted: at 11:56 pm

11-07-2012 17:42 Wow, this was one of my all time favorites. Nigel has some fascinating views on The Greys, the Transhuman movement, Jesus Christ and The Shroud of Turin. In this almost 2 hour uncensored podcast with Mr Kerner, we dove into the possibilities of beings that want to harvest the Soul Energy of living species. The real reason behind the Anunnaki DNA manipulation of Hu-Man. What if the Soul is information mass at the core level? Wait until you hear about Nigels thesis on Jesus Christ blasting a hole thru the space time continuum. Whether you believe in ET's or Jesus Christ, Nigels thesis on the two subjects will certainly make you question the possibilities. 2342

H+ Teaser Video: The H is for Post-Apocalyptic Transhumanism

Posted: August 9, 2012 at 12:16 am

Science fiction has always been a gold mine for the hopes and dreams of geeks everywherein fact, people might still think about the whole meme of Its the 21st century, wheres my flying cars? One of the aspects of data technology is that it helps us become more than human, in fact, every device that we carry with us or keep in our homes networks us with a vast store of information and knowledge moreso than any other before, every smartphone, tablet, PC, laptop, is an extension of humanity as with any tool.

The video series being teased on YouTube right now, H+ (two irritatingly short but narrative packed episodes are available right now) provides an insight into futurist ideas of how transhumanism and augmented reality might pan out.

However, with any toolespecially communicationstheres a danger with mass adoption and dependence and there lies an expectation and a fear that science fiction writers often tap into to write visceral narratives about how technology designed to benefit humanity can go horribly wrong.

Augmented reality or cyborg-augmented people?

This question comes up in a lot of science fiction media and some of the best examples are from the Deus Ex series, especially profound in the most recent Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The technology almost exists today to produce bionic limbs and interfaces that permit people to have superhuman strengthbut certainly not mobility, were not there yetand the question becomes: when we do produce that technology will people amputate limbs in order to articulate themselves with a cyborg appendage?

The same question is being filled with H+ with a computer mechanism that can be implanted directly into the brain to provide high fidelity augmented reality and a direct connection to the Internet of their day. In the first episode we see people talking about the bioethics of the chip and the horror elements creeping in with the flickering static of the television broadcasts and people arguing over mass adoption.

This foreshadows the premise of the H+ dystopia story in that the new technology can be hacked.

In Deus Ex: Human Revolution the same sort of problem occurs, a dependence rises around the cyborg technology and theres also the effect that it can be assaulted, hacked, and people using it driven insane. After all, if we directly wed ourselves with machines we can find ourselves with inseparable hardware. In Neal Stephensons Snow Crash theres a short snippet about a fellow who had one of his bionic eyes hacked by an advertiser and who now suffers stupid ads scrolling in his augmented reality at the bottom of his vision.

These fears are reflected in modern day with people who have reprogrammable pacemakers (using RFID or wireless) where exploits are found in the authentication mechanics enabling a malicious hacker or even a virus to screw with their heart rhythms. While its extremely useful to allow the pace maker to be accessible without having to cut through a persons skin, its still arguable that some things shouldnt be networkable.

'Fringe' recap: Separate Ways

Posted: April 29, 2012 at 9:11 pm

Sitting Shiva For The Rainbow Bridge: In a standout scene, the two Walters (John Noble) take a seat to mourn the imminent severing of their joined universes -- and the possibility of Peter's potential demise -- in the climax of "Worlds Apart."

According to The Bible, a rainbow is no mere meteorological phenomenon. Its a promise from God, made to mankind after The Great Flood, to never again wash away humanity from the face of the Earth. At least, not with water. In the over there universe of Fringe, where the fabric of space had been steadily eroding like some slow moving Armageddon ever since Walter Bishop punched a hole through the quantum wall in a failed bid to save his doppelgangers son, nobody has seen a rainbow in 20 years. One can only wonder how theologians "over there" have made sense of that development. (Or of the whole notion of alternate universes in general.) In the seasons penultimate episode Worlds Apart (the next two weeks constitute a two-part finale), Walternates parallel world people lost another kind of rainbow: The Bridge, that miraculous steel-huedBifrost created by the doomsday machine salvation machine magical electromagnetic waffle iron. Season 4 big bad wolf (or is he?!?) David Robert Jones 2.0 wanted to huff and puff and blow away Rebootlandia's fraternal twin realities and reboot anew from a safe zone of unaffected spacetime with his transhuman zoo of shapeshifters and animal people. Think: Noah Gone Anti-Monitor Mad inCrisis On Infinite Just A Couple Earths. The Fringe divisions on each side realized that the only way to stop him was to collapse The Bridge, whose quantum magic provided the means for the villain to execute his catastrophic scheme. The choice represented a sacrifice for the over there world for it meant their world would no longer benefit from the healing energies of the machine. The teams enemies turned frenemies turned friends said sad goodbyes, then bravely faced each other as the power surged and Walter pulled an X-4 and hit the switches. In my head, Journey played: Here we stand/Worlds apart, hearts broken in two (two, two) There was no reaching for you (you, you) as the ground gave way and each realm blurred and vanished from view but there were small waves between Astrids. The rainbow connection crashed; the lovers, the dreamers, and me went kinda misty. And with that, Fringe effectively pulled the plug on the creative idea that defined the best years of the show. Permanently? Maybe. But given the double rainbow of happy happy joy joy of cancelation delaytion (the elation of delayed misery) that radiated throughout fandom earlier this week One more season! 13 episodes! Fringe lives to die another day! (make sure you click the link for the show's S5 teaser trailer) I have to think we havent seen the last of the over there world. Until then, though, we share in Walters assessment and sentiment: I think I shall miss them, more than I imagined.

"Worlds Apart" began by picking up not far from where we left off two weeks ago, when Walter theorized that Jones aspired to go Dark Phoenix on the multiverse. During a briefing at The Bridge, the humbled and rumpled licorice-loving egghead briefed both Fringe divisions on the matter. He used delightfully crude drawings of colliding planets to illustrate his point. He said he had fleshed out his findings from details gleaned in a dream. The agents expressed some wth?! skepticism, but Walternate, stony-faced as The Sphinx, had his doubles back. Walter was moved by the affirmation and trust of a man whose life and world he had profoundly wrecked with good intentions. Walters suspicions were corroborated after the teams began investigating an outbreak of synched earthquakes in each world. It turned out that Jones had recruited 27 of Olivias fellow all-grown-up test subjects from Walters Cortexiphan trials and was using their super-powers to produce the rumblers. Their psychic havoc was having another effect: Harmonic convergence. Each universe vibrates at a different frequency, but the earthquake epicenters in both worlds were now humming in the same key. Walter believed that Jones would get the universe-smashing Big Bang BOOM! he wanted if he kept producing more transformative earthquakes with more juiced mutants.

NEXT: How great was the weeping Walters scene?

'Fringe' recap: In The World To Come, We Will All Be Monsters

Posted: March 31, 2012 at 8:14 pm

An alternate reality riff on the season 1 episode The Transformation (aka the one where the nerdy Bruce Banner hulked out into an incredibly rubbery human porcupine), Nothing As It Seems was chockablock with strange mutations. Many of them were crammed into the episodes final moments, which gave us a hideous menagerie of creature feature monsters locked away on a ship cruising the ocean. Call it: The Super-Tanker of Dr. Moreau. We saw a spider leg and a rattlesnake tail protruding between the bars of cages, as well as a squid thing squirting through an aquarium jail. All of them were presumably human beings once the latest members of an ancient cult known by a Sumerian tat and organized around the principle of guided evolution. (Were these abominable critters call-backs to other Fringe freaks, too? Many readers say: Yes.) And so Fringe gave us a major new mythological idea, one thats something of a hybrid itself, a blend of ZFT and The First People. Call these extreme science whackjobs: The Next People. Their motivation: To become gods. Or maybe they just want to morph into cockroach-tough genetic constructs capable of surviving the catastrophic extinction event that is imminent. (It is the year 2012, after all. The year that the Mayan celestial ship emerges in the heart of the galaxy, turns into a bearded snake, and gives us all enlightenment. OR EATS US.) Their new leader: David Robert Jones, of course. Only the brainiac with the David Bowie name could be behind something so spacey and odd. The zany zoo of scary monsters and super creeps reminded me of any number of comic book ideas, from The Un-Men to The Ani-Men,Swamp-Thing to Man-Thing,and more. Also: spider-man + reptile-man = The writers of Fringe are, like me, eagerly anticipating the forthcoming reboot of the Spider-Man movie franchise. Are they also gearing up for a story that comments on a calamity-spooked culture thats gone crazy for stories about super-humans? My brain: A heaving Heap of geeky muck and mildewed newsprint. I will not apologize for it.

The opening sequence of Nothing As It Seems impressively restaged the opening sequence of The Transformation except this time, Marshall Bowman (again played by Neal Huff) didnt erupt into the Were-porcupine aboard Vertus Air flight 718 and crash the plane. Instead, Bowman blew up on the ground, during an interrogation by TSA agents. In the old timeline, Bowman was an undercover NSA agent working with two other men a guy named Daniel Hicks and Olivias former partner and lover, John Scott -- to hunt a bioweapons baddie. In Rebootlandia, Bowman was a transhuman cultist, one of many in the world, experimenting with serums developed by David Robert Jones during his days at Massive Dynamic. (Bowman + David = David Bowman, the astronaut turned plus-human Star Child of 2001: A Space Odyssey?) He had a partner, also named Hicks, who had a lover, a Beauty who dug his Beastly cheese especially when he unfurled his leathery bat wings and took her flying across the city. (I was suddenly reminded of Lois Lanes soaring date with the Man of Steel in the first Superman movie.) (You can fly! You belong to the sky! You and I belong to each other!)

The investigation into the mystery of these artificially-induced lusus naturae -- a cornucopia of porcupine people; a porcucopia! -- took Peter and Olivia to a new version of an old friend: Rebootlandia Ed, the near-neckless, manners-challenged proprietor of Markham's Used Books and gnome-like know-it-all specializing in undergound and esoteric knowledge. I always liked Ed, always wished Fringe would do more with him. Peter and Olivia curried Ed's favor by name-dropping Gene Wolf's sci-fi novel Lake Of The Long Sun(the second book in The Solar Cycle series; Peter said it was for "the lady," which left Ed doubly dazzled) and pushed his buttons by suggesting they had a research challenge he couldn't possibly meet. In between his clumsy-funny attempts to hit on Olivia, Ed explained the cuneiform brand on Bowman's body and sketched the framework for this new dimension of Fringeverse mythology. The Sumerian mark means "renewal" or "rebirth." Ed explained there had been "some rumblings lately about a group out there... obsessed with the guided evolution of man. They want to create a new species. A better species. Mutation by design." Mutation By Design -- sounds like an HGTV show that Charles Xavier would love. Later, Astrid would find a website that elaborated on the cult's ambitions: "Each generation of gods is overthrown by its children who become new gods with new tools." Sounds like David Robert Jones -- by seizing control of the creative powers of nature or God (depending on your perspective, as Walter noted) -- wants to pull aTitanomachy and become our new Zeus.

Searching for porcu-rogue Hicks, the agents of Fringe division got the final breakthrough they needed when Walter realized The Next People were using medical waste specifically, human fat to fuel and manage their changes. A gunfight within a plastic surgery clinic inside a Boston skyscraper left the Hicks dead and his heartbroken Lois in a pool of tears. In a beat prior to the super-tanker finale, we saw two more Next People -- Bowmans sister and her boyfriend, played by Battlestar Galacticas Alessandro Juliani shooting up with super-serum. "We can be born anew," she enthused, "children of the new world!" They shot up... and then we faded to the super-tanker, and saw two porcupine creatures stuck in a cell together. Was that the sister and her lover? Gaeta! Don't leave us so soon!

It should be noted that David Robert Jones himself never appeared, and the episode did not specify the relationship between these experimental life forms and the villains other passion project, next-gen shape-shifters, though I suspect these different endeavors are but varied iterations of the same ambition. As much as I worry that TV show special effects arent going to be able to do this mash of monsters the justice they deserve, I like them better than the shape-shifters, as the shape-shifters havent been capturing my imagination the way they did in earlier seasons. That said: My guess is that the next time Fringe revisits this story, The Next People will be more superman than super-beast, thanks to improvements in the formula. That super-tanker? A prison for mutant mistakes a floating island of misfit X-Men.

BURNING QUESTION: Remember the scene when Peter was trying to recall the Bowman case that he investigated in the original timeline? What did you make of the moment when Peter couldn't remember Daniel Hicks' name? Was it just a way to get Olivia involved in the story? (She had been ordered to take leave because "the tenth floor" was worried about the implications of her rapidly dissolving Rebootlandia identity.) Or did you wonder if Peter might now be losing hismemory? Is this Peter Bishop's cosmic function? To keep falling into and out of alternate realities? To love all possible Olivias and save all possible worlds?

NEXT: Agent Lincoln Lee = Gregor from Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis. Yes?

We're Underestimating the Risk of Human Extinction

Posted: March 7, 2012 at 8:05 am

Unthinkable as it may be, humanity, every last person, could someday be wiped from the face of the Earth. We have learned to worry about asteroids and supervolcanoes, but the more-likely scenario, according to Nick Bostrom, a professor of philosophy at Oxford, is that we humans will destroy ourselves.

Bostrom, who directs Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute, has argued over the course of several papers that human extinction risks are poorly understood and, worse still, severely underestimated by society. Some of these existential risks are fairly well known, especially the natural ones. But others are obscure or even exotic. Most worrying to Bostrom is the subset of existential risks that arise from human technology, a subset that he expects to grow in number and potency over the next century.

Despite his concerns about the risks posed to humans by technological progress, Bostrom is no luddite. In fact, he is a longtime advocate of transhumanism---the effort to improve the human condition, and even human nature itself, through technological means. In the long run he sees technology as a bridge, a bridge we humans must cross with great care, in order to reach new and better modes of being. In his work, Bostrom uses the tools of philosophy and mathematics, in particular probability theory, to try and determine how we as a species might achieve this safe passage. What follows is my conversation with Bostrom about some of the most interesting and worrying existential risks that humanity might encounter in the decades and centuries to come, and about what we can do to make sure we outlast them.

Some have argued that we ought to be directing our resources toward humanity's existing problems, rather than future existential risks, because many of the latter are highly improbable. You have responded by suggesting that existential risk mitigation may in fact be a dominant moral priority over the alleviation of present suffering. Can you explain why?

Bostrom:Well suppose you have a moral view that counts future people as being worth as much as present people. You might say that fundamentally it doesn't matter whether someone exists at the current time or at some future time, just as many people think that from a fundamental moral point of view, it doesn't matter where somebody is spatially---somebody isn't automatically worth less because you move them to the moon or to Africa or something. A human life is a human life. If you have that moral point of view that future generations matter in proportion to their population numbers, then you get this very stark implication that existential risk mitigation has a much higher utility than pretty much anything else that you could do. There are so many people that could come into existence in the future if humanity survives this critical period of time---we might live for billions of years, our descendants might colonize billions of solar systems, and there could be billions and billions times more people than exist currently. Therefore, even a very small reduction in the probability of realizing this enormous good will tend to outweigh even immense benefits like eliminating poverty or curing malaria, which would be tremendous under ordinary standards.

You have argued that we underrate existential risks because of a particular kind of bias called observation selection effect. Can you explain a bit more about that?

Bostrom: The idea of an observation selection effect is maybe best explained by first considering the simpler concept of a selection effect. Let's say you're trying to estimate how large the largest fish in a given pond is, and you use a net to catch a hundred fish and the biggest fish you find is three inches long. You might be tempted to infer that the biggest fish in this pond is not much bigger than three inches, because you've caught a hundred of them and none of them are bigger than three inches. But if it turns out that your net could only catch fish up to a certain length, then the measuring instrument that you used would introduce a selection effect: it would only select from a subset of the domain you were trying to sample. Now that's a kind of standard fact of statistics, and there are methods for trying to correct for it and you obviously have to take that into account when considering the fish distribution in your pond. An observation selection effect is a selection effect introduced not by limitations in our measurement instrument, but rather by the fact that all observations require the existence of an observer. This becomes important, for instance, in evolutionary biology. For instance, we know that intelligent life evolved on Earth. Naively, one might think that this piece of evidence suggests that life is likely to evolve on most Earth-like planets. But that would be to overlook an observation selection effect. For no matter how small the proportion of all Earth-like planets that evolve intelligent life, we will find ourselves on a planet that did. Our data point-that intelligent life arose on our planet-is predicted equally well by the hypothesis that intelligent life is very improbable even on Earth-like planets as by the hypothesis that intelligent life is highly probable on Earth-like planets. When it comes to human extinction and existential risk, there are certain controversial ways that observation selection effects might be relevant.

Bostrom: Well, one principle for how to reason when there are these observation selection effects is called the self-sampling assumption, which says roughly that you should think of yourself as if you were a randomly selected observer of some larger reference class of observers. This assumption has a particular application to thinking about the future through the doomsday argument, which attempts to show that we have systematically underestimated the probability that the human species will perish relatively soon. The basic idea involves comparing two different hypotheses about how long the human species will last in terms of how many total people have existed and will come to exist. You could for instance have two hypothesis: to pick an easy example imagine that one hypothesis is that a total of 200 billion humans will have ever existed at the end of time, and the other hypothesis is that 200 trillion humans will have ever existed.

Let's say that initially you think that each of these hypotheses is equally likely, you then have to take into account the self-sampling assumption and your own birth rank, your position in the sequence of people who have lived and who will ever live. We estimate currently that there have, to date, been 100 billion humans. Taking that into account, you then get a probability shift in favor of the smaller hypothesis, the hypothesis that only 200 billion humans will ever have existed. That's because you have to reason that if you are a random sample of all the people who will ever have existed, the chance that you will come up with a birth rank of 100 billion is much larger if there are only 200 billion in total than if there are 200 trillion in total. If there are going to be 200 billion total human beings, then as the 100 billionth of those human beings, I am somewhere in the middle, which is not so surprising. But if there are going to be 200 trillion people eventually, then you might think that it's sort of surprising that you're among the earliest 0.05% of the people who will ever exist. So you can see how reasoning with an observation selection effect can have these surprising and counterintuitive results. Now I want to emphasize that I'm not at all sure this kind of argument is valid; there are some
deep methodological questions about this argument that haven't been resolved, questions that I have written a lot about. See I had understood observation selection effects in this context to work somewhat differently. I had thought that it had more to do with trying to observe the kinds of events that might cause extinction level events, things that by their nature would not be the sort of things that you could have observed before, because you'd cease to exist after the initial observation. Is there a line of thinking to that effect? Bostrom: Well, there's another line of thinking that's very similar to what you're describing that speaks to how much weight we should give to our track record of survival. Human beings have been around for roughly a hundred thousand years on this planet, so how much should that count in determining whether we're going to be around another hundred thousand years? Now there are a number of different factors that come into that discussion, the most important of which is whether there are going to be new kinds of risks that haven't existed to this point in human history---in particular risks of our own making, new technologies that we might develop this century, those that might give us the means to create new kinds of weapons or new kinds of accidents. The fact that we've been around for a hundred thousand years wouldn't give us much confidence with respect to those risks. But, to the extent that one were focusing on risks from nature, from asteroid attacks or risks from say vacuum decay in space itself, or something like that, one might ask what we can infer from this long track record of survival. And one might think that any species anywhere will think of themselves as having survived up to the current time because of this observation selection effect. You don't observe yourself after you've gone extinct, and so that complicates the analysis for certain kinds of risks. A few years ago I wrote a paper together with a physicist at MIT named Max Tegmark, where we looked at particular risks like vacuum decay, which is this hypothetical phenomena where space decays into a lower energy state, which would then cause this bubble propagating at the speed of light that would destroy all structures in its path, and would cause a catastrophe that no observer could ever see because it would come at you at the speed of light, without warning. We were noting that it's somewhat problematic to apply our observations to develop a probability for something like that, given this observation selection effect. But we found an indirect way of looking at evidence having to do with the formation date of our planet, and comparing it to the formation date of other earthlike planets and then using that as a kind of indirect way of putting a bound on that kind of risk. So that's another way in which observation selection effects become important when you're trying to estimate the odds of humanity having a long future.
