Concluding a busy five week mission, the SpaceX Dragon CRS-4 commercial cargo ship departed the International Space Station (ISS) this morning, Oct. 25, after delivering a slew of some 2.5 tons of ground breaking science experiments and supplies that also inaugurated a new era in Earth science at the massive orbiting outpost following installation of the ISS-RapidScat payload.

Dragon was released from the snares of the stations robotic arm at 9: 57 a.m. EDT while soaring some 250 mi (400 km) over the northwest coast of Australia.

The Dragon is free! exclaimed NASA commentator Rob Navias during a live broadcast on NASA TV. The release was very clean.

The private resupply ship was loaded for return to Earth with more than 3,276 pounds of NASA cargo and science samples from the station crews investigations on human research, biology and biotechnology studies, physical science investigations, and education activities sponsored by NASA and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, the nonprofit organization responsible for managing research aboard the U.S. national laboratory portion of the space station, said NASA.

The release set up a quick series of three burns by the ships Draco thrusters designed to carry Dragon safely away from the station.

NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman and Butch Wilmore quickly retracted the arm working from their robotics workstation in the domed Cupola module.

Thanks for the help down there, the astronauts radioed. It was a great day.

SpaceX ship leaves ISS for Earth loaded with lab results

WASHINGTON DC, USA SpaceX's unmanned Dragon spacecraft left the International Space Station to return to Earth on Saturday, October 25, after a month in orbit, NASA said.

Astronauts at the orbiting lab manipulated the space station's robotic arm to detach the Dragon on time, at 9:57 am (1357 GMT or 9:57 pm Philippine time), in what the US space agency called a "very clean release."

The capsule was set to splash down 5 and a half hours later in the Pacific Ocean, near the Mexican coast, slowed by 3 enormous parachutes.

The unmanned craft, which has been docked in orbit since September 23, will be carrying back some 3,800 pounds (1,700 kilograms) of materials, including results from experiments conducted on the space station.

The SpaceX vessel is the only spacecraft currently capable of returning with cargo. Its last mission to ISS was in April. (READ: SpaceX supply capsule berths at ISS)

It had delivered more than 5,000 pounds (2,200 kilograms) of cargo, including freeze-dried meals, 20 live lab mice and a 3D printer, in its fourth contracted mission to the orbiting lab.

The lab mice are the first live mammals to hitch a ride aboard a commercial cargo ship, and they are enclosed in a NASA-made research cage for studying the effects of weightlessness on their bodies.

The 3-D printer is the first of its kind to demonstrate how the technology can be used in space, even without gravity to assist the process.

Giant leap for China space program

Posted: at 6:51 pm

By Katie Hunt, CNN

updated 10:42 PM EDT, Thu October 23, 2014

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Hong Kong (CNN) -- Up, up and away. Way away -- to the moon, in fact.

China launched an experimental spacecraft early Friday that is scheduled to orbit the moon before returning to Earth, a first for the country's ambitious space program and considered a precursor to a planned mission to the moon.

The unmanned spacecraft was launched by a Long March 3C rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan, western China, state media said.

It is China's first lunar module capable of returning to Earth and the mission's main technical challenge will be making sure the spacecraft slows down enough to re-enter Earth's atmosphere safely.

NASA Television Coverage Set for Orbital Resupply Mission to Space Station

Posted: at 3:45 am

Orbital Sciences Corp. will launch its next mission to resupply the International Space Station Monday, Oct. 27, and NASA Television will broadcast live coverage of the event, including pre- and post-launch briefings and arrival at the station.

Orbital's Cygnus cargo spacecraft is scheduled to launch at 6:45 p.m. EDT from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport's Launch Pad 0A at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. Launch coverage begins at 5:45 p.m.

A prelaunch status briefing will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, followed at 2 p.m. by a briefing to preview the mission's science cargo. A post-launch briefing will be held approximately 90 minutes after liftoff.

Media who wish to ask questions remotely during the briefing must respond to Rachel Kraft atrachel.h.kraft@nasa.govno later than 30 minutes before the start of each briefing. The public may submit questions via Twitter using the hashtag #askNASA.

Cygnus will transport almost 5,000 pounds of supplies, including science experiments, crew provisions, spare parts and experiment hardware. It will arrive at the station Sunday, Nov. 2. Expedition 41 crew members Reid Wiseman and Barry Wilmore of NASA will be ready in the stations cupola to capture the resupply craft with the station's robotic arm and install it on the Earth-facing port of the station's Harmony module.

NASA TV coverage of capture and installation will begin at 3:30 a.m. Nov. 2, followed by grapple at 4:58 a.m. Coverage of the installation of Cygnus onto the International Space Station will begin at 7 a.m. The capsule is scheduled to depart the station Wednesday, Dec. 3, and burn up in Earths atmosphere during reentry.

Continuing the tradition of naming its spacecraft after astronauts who have made significant contributions to spaceflight, Orbital dubbed this Cygnus resupply ship the SS Deke Slayton. The name is a tribute to original Mercury 7 astronaut Donald Deke K. Slayton, who flew on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission in 1975 and championed commercial space endeavors after retiring from NASA in 1982. Slayton passed away in 1993.

This mission is the third of eight Orbital flights NASA contracted with the company to resupply the space station, and the fourth trip by a Cygnus spacecraft to the orbiting laboratory.
