Ron Paul given rock star treatment at UVU

Posted: October 31, 2012 at 11:47 pm

Ron Paul speaks at the UCCU Center in Orem on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012.

Kristin Murphy, Deseret News

OREM Ron Paul received a robust welcome at Utah Valley University on Thursday, drawing supportive chants, cheers and standing ovations from the audience as he lambasted the Federal Reserve, income taxes, the war on drugs, the war in Afghanistan, Medicare, welfare and foreign policy.

The longtime Texas congressman and three-time presidential candidate brought his trademark small government message to the UCCU Events Center to the delight of the near-capacity crowd. But while Paul's remarks were critical of U.S. government both past and present, his message focused on the ability of individuals to band together and demand change.

"There truly is a revolution happening in the country, and people's attitudes are changing," he said. "There is reason to be optimistic about what is happening today."

Paul made several references to the role technology plays in society today. He encouraged all in attendance to take advantage of the Internet and social networking to educate themselves and help other people understand the benefits of limited government.

Paul also said that personal freedom and civil liberty are not ideas embraced only by a small subset of the Republican party. They are fundamental principals that bring people together from the entire political spectrum, he said.

"Peace is better than war. Free markets are better than socialism. Balanced budgets are better than spending," Paul said. "Why do we lose this argument? It seems like it's so attractive."

On policy issues, he spent a large portion of his speech discussing the welfare system and federal spending. In his lifetime, Paul said, he's watched government increase its commitment to social programs to the detriment of the middle and lower classes.

"Once you endorse the principle of welfarism, guess what? The poor get poorer, and the rich get richer," he said. "It's a totally failed system. And we can't be intimidated by those that argue, 'If you don't support the welfare system, you're not a humanitarian.'"

Ron Paul-Inspired Group Lobbies for Bill Prompted by Paul Reimbursements

Posted: at 11:47 pm

A nonprofit group founded to push Rep. Ron Pauls agenda on Capitol Hill has put its weight behind a bill inspired by a reimbursement snafu of Pauls.

The Liberty Committee, headed by former Paul aide David James, has launched a lobbying campaign for legislation to improve disclosure of Congressional office expenditures.

The bill, H.Res. 580, would help expose Washington corruption, the group says, citing Roll Calls reporting on Paul double-billing plane tickets and other travel expenses both to taxpayers and his campaign.

The practice netted Paul thousands of dollars in dozens of examples for which documents show he was paid twice.

Roll Calls review also showed that changes to expenditure reporting in 2009 have shielded details about how lawmakers spend their taxpayer-funded office budgets, prompting Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) to introduce legislation on the subject.

Quigleys proposal would require Members to itemize individual travel expenses, among other things, in order to fill in gaps in publicly reported data that arose in 2009.

That year, the House for the first time released its quarterly expense reports online. But Congressional administrators erased a vast array of details on the expenditures, making it impossible to determine what much of the money was actually spent on.

Liberty Committee, which Paul tasked James to launch in 1998, is lobbying for Quigleys bill.

Congress suffers from a deficit of public trust, but we can earn that trust back by increasing transparency so taxpayers know how we spend their hard earned dollars. Shining more sunlight on the travel reimbursement process is an important part of holding elected officials accountable because it is a frequent expenditure in most congressional offices. I welcome any support for this and similar transparency efforts, Quigley said in a recent statement.

Tight race to succeed Ron Paul growing heated

Posted: at 11:47 pm

Bill Clinton, the Democratic Party's ablest advocate these days, touched down in Beaumont last week to lend his star power to that rare political phenomenon in the Lone Star State, a Democrat running for an open seat in Congress who actually has a chance of winning.

Although the Republican candidate, state Rep. Randy Weber of Alvin, remains a slight favorite to take the GOP-leaning District 14 seat held for years by Ron Paul, Democrat Nick Lampson is competitive. The former congressman from Beaumont out-raised his opponent by about $50,000 in the third quarter and had about $422,000 in cash on hand, while Weber had $55,000.

"I think it'll be very close," said University of Houston political scientist Richard Murray. "Lampson's not your average Democrat. He's an experienced and well-funded candidate, but he's got to get a lot of Romney crossover voters to pull it off."

In a Beaumont rally the other night, Clinton described Lampson as someone who will "work with anybody that's got an idea worth listening to."

Lampson's opponent, Clinton said, without mentioning Weber by name, is an ideologue more interested in adhering to tea party orthodoxy than in serving the needs of the district.

"He said he wasn't knocking on doors in moderate households because they were not receptive to his message," Clinton told the crowd.

Donations in dispute

In a tight race that grows more heated by the day, Lampson has questioned Weber's character and judgment for raising and keeping $22,500 in illegal campaign donations. A resident of Jefferson County who supports Lampson filed a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission last week.

Weber, who touts the endorsements of Paul, Gov. Rick Perry, GOP Senate nominee Ted Cruz, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio and several area congressmen, acknowledges that seven individual contributors exceeded the individual-donor limit of $2,500, with four of them writing checks for $5,000 apiece and three others writing multiple checks for $2,500.

"If he can't be trusted to manage his own money, how can he be trusted with the public's money?" said Lampson campaign spokesman Daniel Van Hoogstraten.

Casey For Freedom: Continuing The Ron Paul Message In Maine

Posted: at 11:47 pm

As the Ron Paul movement is entering a transition phase into the future beyond presidential politics, a series of candidates who are strong on the message of liberty are taking their chances at running for office. Tim Lajoie, Lewiston City Republican chair, is a pro-liberty candidate for the Maine House of Representatives in District #74, while Ron Paul-endorsed Representative Aaron Libby is running for re-election in Waterboro. Sam Canders, another liberty Republican, is running in District #15, in Bangor. In addition to these strong candidates, there is another individual who is worth taking a look at. This mans name is Kevin Casey, who is making a splash in Portland with his Casey For Freedom message.

Portland writer and fellow Bangor Daily News blogger Chris Busby noted in an October 4th article titled More signs of the apocalypse: Republican sighted in Portlands West End, and people agree with him, that Kevin Casey does stand a good chance at winning in November. His Ron Paul-style Libertarianism is one thing that many left-leaning residents of Portland can agree with. The Republican vote will be secure, because Republicans wont vote for Greens or Democrats. Could the crossover appeal really lead Kevin Casey to the unthinkable of having a Republican representing Portland?

The idea itself, a Republican from Portland in Augusta, sounds outrageous. In an area known for being liberal, it seems highly unlikely. But Casey is not your typical Republican. He is not a liberal Republican, typically known in the party mainstream as a RINO (Republican In Name Only), because he advocates strong libertarian principles. He is not a conservative, because he does carry some left-leaning views. But he is also not a Libertarian, because he is running as a Republican. To sum up everything, Casey, like many other fellow Ron Paul supporters running for office in Maine and across America, is unique.

Another point working to Caseys favor, as Busby noted in his article, is that the seat race is wide open:

The Greens and Dems have battled over this district for the past decade, since John Eder won here in 2002, becoming the first Green in the country elected to a state legislature. Democrat Hinck bested Eder in 2006 and easily held onto the seat until he decided to make his ill-fated Senate run this year. Hinck has dutifully endorsed Moonen, but the incumbents imprimatur is not likely to be a big factor Portland Democrats, like those elsewhere in Maine, chose Cynthia Dill over Hinck by a large margin in this years primary.

An appeal to those Democrats, who may be split between the Democrat and Green candidates, is his pro-choice, pro-gay marriage stances. While the former is not as prevalent in the Ron Paul movement, it is one that will attract the liberal mainstream of Portland. The second point will, also. The libertarian message of decriminalizing marijuana also appeals to liberals and conservatives alike, and will attract voters from both sides.

For Republicans, Casey does offer a lot to them, as well. Proving hes no liberal running on their ticket, he supports conservative ideas such as health and food freedom, advocating choice in both areas. He wants to eliminate the income tax, according to Busby, and as Casey notes on his campaign website, wants to keep money in the pockets of Portland citizens. This keeps money local, which grows the economy and keeps jobs in Portland, Casey says on his website. He goes on to state that the debt is the greatest threat to our childrens future.

The message that Congressman Ron Paul brought to the political mainstream is one of freedom and liberty. Such ideas as eliminating the income tax, which historically has enabled the expansion of big government, and allowing citizens to spend their hard-earned money as they see fit, now are strong within politics. The presidential campaign was a vehicle for unity, which brought many grassroots activists together, and have further inspired people to run. Casey is apart of the future of the Republican Party, which will be a shift away from social issues and more towards a productive approach to the fiscal issues that face us and our childrens future. The citizens of District #118 have an opportunity to elect a candidate of the people. For positive change for Maines future, Portland citizens would be wise to vote Casey for Freedom.

Obama, Romney and Federal Reserve independence

Politics Obama, Romney And The Federal Reserve

The Federal Reserve is a hot-button issue for some members of Congress, for instance the former presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul from Texas. Though Paul's supporters were no doubt disappointed that he failed to win the nod from the GOP, his antipathy for the central bank did get some recognition with a spot in the Republican platform.

From the platform:

(The) Republican Party will work to advance substantive legislation that brings transparency and accountability to the Federal Reserve, the Federal Open Market Committee and the Fed's dealings with foreign central banks. The first step to increasing transparency and accountability is through an annual audit of the Federal Reserve's activities.

Though it sounds vaguely Ron-Paulian, Mitt Romney, Republican presidential nominee and former Massachusetts governor, has not advocated or endorsed the Audit the Fed bill approved by the House in July.

The bill does offer some specific ideas about where in the central bank to shine some light. Those include discount window and open market operations, agreements with foreign governments and central banks, and Federal Open Market Committee directives.

The discount window is the Federal Reserve's emergency lending operation for banks. When solvent banks can't find short-term financing through other means, they can go to the Fed as the lender of last resort. Banks that borrow through the discount window are not publically identified. The term "open market operations" refers to programs in which the central bank buys securities in the open market.

"The Fed, just like any bank, is always audited to the extent of basic operations to make sure there's no malfeasance," says David Stasavage, a professor of politics at New York University. "But, what they've pushed on more -- and I think this is more of a hot-button issue -- is the extent to which Federal Reserve deliberations or records of deliberations should be subject to greater scrutiny."

As it currently stands, the regular monetary policy meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee, or FOMC, are strictly closed-door affairs. Three weeks after the meeting, a paraphrasing of the minutes is released. After five years, a lightly edited verbatim transcript is released.

While Romney has publically thrown his support behind the idea of auditing the Fed, his campaign has not offered many details beyond that.

Ron Paul to speak Thursday at UVU

Posted: at 4:21 pm

OREM -- Republican congressman and three-time presidential candidate Ron Paul will speak Thursday afternoon at Utah Valley University.

According to UVU spokesman Mike Rigert, Paul will speak at the school's UCCU center at 1:30 p.m. as a guest of the Young Presidents Organization. The visit will mark Paul's first visit to Utah since a presidential campaign stop in September 2007. The event is not sponsored by UVU.

Rigert had limited information about the event, but did mention that it was making the rounds on various social networks.

Monday afternoon, Provo resident Jon Ogden confirmed that he found out about the event on Google+. Unlike some other likely attendees, Ogden doesn't describe himself as a libertarian. However, Ogden explained that he still appreciates Paul's serious consideration of issues that other politicians -- including both major party presidential candidates -- tend to ignore.

"He's not pandering when he says he's going to cut a trillion from the budget," Ogden said.

Ogden didn't know what specific topics Paul will cover, but mentioned that the Federal Reserve, government spending, ending wars and drug laws are all common themes in Paul's work.

Brigham Young University student Ryan Johns also said Monday that he plans to attend the event. Johns serves as the president of the BYU Liberty Club and said in 2007 Paul helped transform him from a typical apathetic teenager to a more engaged adult.

"When I heard his message it got me really excited, really interested," Johns recalled.

Johns added that Paul's agenda includes energizing youth and focuses on the Constitution. As a club president, Johns also has been in contact with the event organizers and said as many as 2,000 people may be at the speech.

Representatives from the Young Presidents Organization could not immediately be reached Monday afternoon.
