Ron Paul : "0% Chance Of ‘Grand Bargain’ Over Fiscal Cliff"

Posted: at 10:41 pm

Shining a little reality light on the otherwise pollyanna-like dearth of pragmatism that is the mainstream media's guest-list, Ron Paul provided Bloomberg TV's Trish Regan a little more than we suspect she bargained for when asked if he had any hope that we avoid the fiscal cliff. The constant "delaying-of-the-inevitable" enables our politicians to avoid facing up to the serious consequences of our reality and as Representative Paul notes the chances of a grand bargain are "probably zero... that's why I think we're over the cliff [already]." Just like the handling of the debt ceiling debacle, Paul notes they will "pretend they are going to do it" until we get a total crash of the dollar and the entire financial system (which he notes is what will occur if we continue the status quo). "We are at a point of no return" unless certain things change, since "we are not the productive nation we used to be."

Paul on the fiscal cliff and whether politicians are under more pressure to just do what they need to do to get votes:

"Well I think that's true and I think it's been that way for a long time but the big difference is the Treasury is bare. It isn't like we're in the 1950s and 1960s where economic growth could work our way out of these problems that you could print money forever. Printing the money right now, what does it do, it fills the banks with excessive reserves and they get paid to park it at the Federal Reserve. So it's quite different. We're not the productive nation we used to bewe have a lot of jobs gone overseas. Our dollar is weakening because prices do go up and as long as we do that, the politicians are going to keep pushing that and trying to get away with that but the big question is how long will politicians will be able to get away with that."

On the probability that a grand bargain will be reached on the fiscal cliff:

"Probably zero that's why I think we're over the cliff. We're past bargaining states because they will not address those things I just stated. They're going to try to pretend that they are going to do it. The way they handled the debt increase, last summer, that is a pretty good example. And matter of fact the debt increase might be the big event come February that might be big because they can roll things overthey can postpone big decisions in January and yet that still does not remove the uncertainty. Uncertainty is a major cause of the inability for the market to get moving again and they have to revamp it in a much more detailed fashion than they are even talking about right now."

On whether Obama will be able to bring Congress together for some kind of reform before the end of the year:

"Oh no, I think there will be something, but it will be very temporary, it won't be long lasting and restore confidence and fix the problem. But there will be some type of reconciliation of saying we'll do this and a little of that and it may even help the financial markets for a little while, but since it won't solve the problems it will only be temporary. "

Ron Paul says post-Sandy “price gouging” would’ve helped solve the gas shortage

Posted: at 10:41 pm

Even as New York and New Jersey launched lawsuits against business that have participated in price gouging post-Sandy, Texas Rep. Ron Paul has penned a newsletter saying that when it comes to gas this practice would have actually solved states problems post the storm.

In the In Praise of Price Gouging newsletter, Paul argues that price gouging is normal market response of rising prices in the wake of a natural disaster.

According to Bloomberg, New Jersey government is currently suing seven stations for price gouging. Under New Jersey law, excessive price increase of 10 percent or more during a declared state of emergency is considered price gouging.

We warned merchants again and again not to violate the law by taking advantage of people following this catastrophe, said New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa during a press conference on Friday Nov. 9. The fact that we have these fringe businesses that think that disasters are a profit center is troubling.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie warned against price gouging as early as Oct. 27, when he said:

During emergencies, New Jerseyans should look out for each other not seek to take advantage of each other. The State Division of Consumer Affairs will look closely at any and all complaints about alleged price gouging. Anyone found to have violated the law will face significant penalties.

On Nov. 5, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced that his office has received overwhelming number of complaints about price gouging and was launching an investigation into the matter, reportedReuters.

Our office has zero tolerance for price gouging, he said. We are actively investigating hundreds of complaints weve received from consumers of businesses preying on victims.

However, the outgoing representative from the Lone Star State, Ron Paul, believes that interfering in price gouging and regulating the prices actually hurt the residents in New Jersey and New York and caused the post-Sandy gas shortage to last longer than it otherwise would.

Saving Liberty: The Future After Ron Paul And Gary Johnson

Posted: at 10:41 pm

2012 was an incredible year for politics. The political arena was not only exciting in Maine, but it was in all of America. The excitement came due to a series of storylines that played out over the course of the year, with one of the major ones being the unique nature of the Ron Paul movement.

An influx of new activists joined the Republican Party to help advance liberty and nominate Ron Paul for President. They are a diverse group of people, largely libertarians, but many not Libertarians. Some within this push for liberty are also conservatives, or even liberals and anarchists. Its a political melting pot full of individuals who just want to live free from government interference. Government, first and foremost, protects the people and their interests, not controls them.

Early on in the primaries, back in 2011 when it was less clear there would be this much of an impact, the liberty movement faced two potential directions: Ron Paul or Gary Johnson. An early rift in the liberty movement that Congressman Paul would win, with Johnson bowing out of the race and later joining the Libertarian Party. Paul would become a political legend for the immediate impact and will likely be remembered in history for the long-term influence his philosophy and career wields over the political arena.

Gary Johnson has his own legacy however. After Paul failed to secure the nomination in a bitter delegate fight, with the resistance of the Republican establishment fracturing the party, supporters looked elsewhere to cast their vote in November. The clear choice for many was the 5% threshold needed to open the door for the Libertarian Party in the mainstream. Johnson, who already had a name as a successful governor in New Mexico and former candidate for the Republican nomination, stood out to many Ron Paul supporters. While some would write-in Paul in the end, Johnson also picked up a huge number, exceeding one million votes.

While neither Johnson or Paul will become President in 2013, they have a lasting legacy that millions of people across America will carry on. Here in Maine, the Libertarian Party is quietly restructuring and preparing for a rise. The Republican Party is undergoing an identity crisis with an ongoing philosophical civil war raging within. All the while, the Democratic Party has the short-term political control. The future looks grim for them however, as the liberty movement is slowly advancing through the political arena and working to forever change the game.

There are a number of issues to address and consider moving forward to the liberty movement, which Undercover Porcupine will cover here in a series of articles. The liberty movement needs to assess leadership, future candidates, its principles, and strategy moving forward.

Stay tuned here to Undercover Porcupine starting November 14th, for the discussion into the future of liberty.

THE SAVING LIBERTY SERIES

1. Liberty Is Not Insane One of the difficulties in advancing the liberty movement is communication, with the mainstream often misunderstanding the concept of liberty. With Ron Paul, the misconceptions regarding philosophy and principles are endless, with some of this due to Paul himself. One of the top jobs for those within the movement is to correct misconceptions and clarify why freedom makes sense. Liberty itself, is far from being insane and crazy.2.
