Ron Paul: "Secession Is a Deeply American Principle" – Video

Ron Paul: "Secession Is a Deeply American Principle"
While other Republicans distance themselves from secession petitions that have sprouted up in states across the country, leave it to Ron Paul to jump directly into the fray. "Secession is a deeply American principle," the outgoing Republican congressman wrote on his website. Evoking America #39;s secession from England, he added: "There is nothing treasonous or unpatriotic about wanting a federal government that is more responsive to the people it represents." The petitions have appeared in more than 30 states since President Obama #39;s re-election and are posting to a White House channel that promises an official response to any proposal that collects more than 25000 signatures. The one from Paul #39;s home state, Texas, has been the most popular, with 115000 signatures and counting. Unsurprisingly, the White House has yet to weigh in.From:slatesterViews:17 1ratingsTime:01:08More inNews Politics

Ron Paul: If America Loves the States, It Should Set Them Free

Posted: at 8:42 pm

In a gift to those who enjoyed Lincoln last weekend, on Monday Ron Paul offered up a real-world sequel of sorts in a blog post to his House website. Following President Obama's reelection, more than 675,000 Americans from all 50 states signed petitions on the White House's "We the People" website calling for their state to part ways with the rest of the union. Many assume this new band of secessionists is comprised of people who are angry that the country is being run by a Kenyan socialist and college kids who saw the petition on Facebook and thought it was funny. However, Paul argues that this outcry from roughly .22 percent of the American public raises "a lot of worthwhile questions about the nature of our union," despite what your history teacher might have told you about the Civil War.

Paul argues that "secession is a deeply American principle," and points out that our country was formed when the colonies decided to separate from England. He adds, "The Federal government kept the Union together through violence and force in the Civil War, but did might really make right?"

While Paul believes that the states still have a right to secede, as The Hill notes that's still up for debate. There's no legal method established for doing so, and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia denied that the right exists in a letter obtained by The Wall Street Journal. "The answer is clear," writes Scalia. "If there was any constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede. (Hence, in the Pledge of Allegiance, 'one Nation, indivisible.')"

Okay, so a state actually couldn't secede (without a fight, at least), but does that mean they shouldn't be able to withdraw from the U.S.? Paul writes:

There is nothing treasonous or unpatriotic about wanting a federal government that is more responsive to the people it represents. That is what our Revolutionary War was all about and today our own federal government is vastly overstepping its constitutional bounds with no signs of reform. In fact, the recent election only further entrenched the status quo. If the possibility of secession is completely off the table there is nothing to stop the federal government from continuing to encroach on our liberties and no recourse for those who are sick and tired of it.

If the American people can't secede, how will they ever be able to stop the officials they keep voting for in regularly scheduled elections?

Rand Paul Is 'Interested' In 2016 Presidential Run

Posted: at 8:42 pm

Senator Paul (R-Kentucky), the son of retiring Texas congressman and three-time unsuccessful presidential candidate Ron Paul, was asked by ABC's Jonathan Karl if he'd run for office in 2016.

Am I interested in thinking about that? Yes," he said, adding he wants "to be part of the national debate." However. Paul, a Kentucky Senator is not committing to run for the position.

I am different than some in that I am not going to deny that I am interested, Paul said. Im not going to deny that I think we have to go a different direction because were just not winning.

Paul said the Republican Party should explore new means of expanding its appeal, especially to young people and Hispanics. He also said he supports exploring routes for illegal immigrants to gain citizenship as well as loosening marijuana restrictions and placing them at state levels.

I think for example we should tell young people, Im not in favor of you smoking pot, but if you get caught smoking pot, I dont want to put you in jail for 20 years, he said.

States should be allowed to make a lot of these decisions. I want things to be decided more at a local basis, with more compassion. I think it would make us as Republicans different.

Paul's father, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) is slated to retire after 23 years in Congress. He unsuccessfully ran for president twice as a Republican and once as a Libertarian.

Hes grown the party in a tremendous way, Paul said. Theres a sea change on the Republican side and I think my fathers responsible for some of that.

Ron Paul: Secession Petitions ‘Raise A Lot Of Worthwhile Questions’

Posted: at 8:42 pm

Very few people are taking the secession petitions on the White House website seriously. Despite some of the petitions getting over 25,000 signatures, the White House has not offered any official response (yet). But Congressman Ron Paul, who is serving out the rest of his final term in office, takes the petitions seriously and says on his website that they raise worthwhile questions.

RELATED: Megyn Kelly Panel Battles Over Whether The States Could Legally Secede From U.S.

Pauls argument pushes back against the argument that secession is a fundamentally unpatriotic principle, as many people have made clear in the past few days. Paul says that he wouldnt hold his breath on any state actually seceding, but argues that it is not treasonous for a state to consider such an option.

Secession is a deeply American principle. This country was born through secession. Some felt it was treasonous to secede from England, but those traitors became our countrys greatest patriots.

To make his point about states rights even clearer, Paul cites ballot initiatives legalizing marijuana in two states while pointing out that the federal government has not exactly been kind about respecting the rights of states to enforce its own drug laws. Paul uses language directly from the Declaration of Independence to make the point that secession is a shining example of freedom of the people.

After all, as he argues, if people cannot secede from an oppressive government, they cannot truly be considered free.

Ron Paul: Secession "deeply American"

Posted: at 8:42 pm

Rep. Ron Paul, R-Tex., defended the secession petitions circulating on the White House website, saying the petitioners "raise a lot of worthwhile questions about the nature of our union."

In a post under the "Texas Straight Talk" section of Paul's House website, the congressman disputed the charge that talk of secession is "mere sour grapes over the election," exalting secession as a "deeply American principle."

"This country was born through secession," Paul writes. "Some felt it was treasonous to secede from England, but those "traitors" became our country's greatest patriots. There is nothing treasonous or unpatriotic about wanting a federal government that is more responsive to the people it represents."

Paul's argument, at times an almost-scholarly rumination on historical documents and founding fathers, cites the Declaration of Independence's dissolution of political union as a historical precedent, and quotes Thomas Jefferson's 1825 letter to Thomas Giles in which the founding father argued that states "should separate from our companions only when the sole alternatives left, are the dissolution of our Union with them, or submission to a government without limitation of powers."

And everywhere Paul looks, he sees government unlimited.

"Consider the ballot measures that passed in Colorado and Washington state regarding marijuana laws," writes Paul. "The people in those states have clearly indicated that they are ready to try something different where drug policy is concerned, yet they will still face a tremendous threat from the federal government. In California, the Feds have been arresting peaceful medical marijuana users and raiding dispensaries that state and local governments have sanctioned. This shouldn't happen in a free country."

He also singles out Obamacare as an example of federal overreach: "It remains to be seen what will happen in states that are refusing to comply with the deeply unpopular mandates of Obamacare by not setting up healthcare exchanges. It appears the Federal government will not respect those decisions either."

Paul argues that secession, far from being treasonous, must be seen as a final safeguard against an unduly transgressive central government: "In a free country, governments derive their power from the consent of the governed. When the people have very clearly withdrawn their consent for a law, the discussion should be over. If the Feds refuse to accept that and continue to run roughshod over the people, at what point do we acknowledge that that is not freedom anymore? At what point should the people dissolve the political bands which have connected them with an increasingly tyrannical and oppressive federal government?"

He concludes, "If a people cannot secede from an oppressive government, they cannot truly be considered free."

Paul's defense of secession can be seen as another example of his states' rights absolutism - more an exercise in ideological consistency than a legitimate incitement to dissolve the union. But critics will doubtlessly accuse Paul of irresponsibly throwing kerosene on the already-inflamed secession debate that has sprung up in the wake of President Obama's reelection.

Ron Paul Stands By Secessionists

Posted: at 8:42 pm

Ron Paul has returned to the hot-button issue of secession, arguing that leaving the Union is a legitimate way for states to "stop the federal government from continuing to encroach on our liberties."

Paul, a Republican congressman from Texas known for his libertarian views, said on his House website:

"Secession is a deeply American principle. This country was born through secession. Some felt it was treasonous to secede from England, but those 'traitors' became our country's greatest patriots. There is nothing treasonous or unpatriotic about wanting a federal government that is more responsive to the people it represents."

[OPINION: Ron Paul Is 'Deeply' Wrong About Secession]

The Civil War was of course fought in part over secession when the South tried to form the Confederate States of America and retain slavery. That war cost huge numbers of lives and money but in the end the Union was preserved.

But Paul said, "[I]f the people or states are not free to leave the United States as a last resort, can they really think of themselves as free? If a people cannot secede from an oppressive government, they cannot truly be considered free ... If the possibility of secession is completely off the table there is nothing to stop the federal government from continuing to encroach on our liberties and no recourse for those who are sick and tired of it."

A Paul spokeswoman told myU.S. Newscolleague Elizabeth Flock last week that Paul "feels the same way" about secession as he did in April 2009 when he said on YouTube that secession is a legitimate issue to debate.

[ENJOY: The U.S. News Collection of Republican Party Cartoons]

Since Obama was re-elected November 6, petitions have been circulated in a number of states including Texas supportingsecession. Now Paul has used that development as a news peg to expand on his views about secession.

Paul ran for the GOP presidential nomination this year. He fell short but inspired some of the most enthusiastic followers of any campaign.

The Most Important Speech Of the Century Part 1 – Video

The Most Important Speech Of the Century Part 1
"Trust Yourself, Not the Government!" - Ron Paul The Most Important Speech Of the Century by Ron Paul with Text of the Speech This may well be the last time I speak on the House Floor. At the end of the year I #39;ll leave Congress after 23 years in office over a 36 year period. My goals in 1976 were the same as they are today promote peace and prosperity by a strict adherence to the principles of individual liberty. It was my opinion, that the course the US embarked on in the latter part of the 20th Century would bring us a major financial crisis and engulf us in a foreign policy that would overextend us and undermine our national security. To achieve the goals I sought, government would have had to shrink in size and scope, reduce spending, change the monetary system, and reject the unsustainable costs of policing the world and expanding the American Empire. The problems seemed to be overwhelming and impossible to solve, yet from my view point, just following the constraints placed on the federal government by the Constitution would have been a good place to start. How Much Did I Accomplish? In many ways, according to conventional wisdom, my off-and-on career in Congress, from 1976 to 2012, accomplished very little. No named legislation, no named federal buildings or highways -- thank goodness. In spite of my efforts, the government has grown exponentially, taxes remain excessive, and the prolific increase of incomprehensible regulations continues. Wars are constant and ...From:TruthNeverToldViews:0 0ratingsTime:12:42More inNews Politics
