Ron Paul’s School Revolution

Posted: at 4:41 am

Ron Paul, Distinguished Counselor to the Mises Institute, recently released his new book The School Revolution: A New Answer for Our Broken Education System. Dr. Paul spoke with us about his new book and how decentralization, competition, and online instruction are revolutionizing education.

Mises Institute: Your books in the past have tended to address issues such as hard money, private property, and central banking. Why are you now looking at education?

Ron Paul: People during the presidential campaigns spoke of a Ron Paul Revolution. But without a revolution in education, there can be no Revolution. If people get to learn about the freedom philosophy only in caricature, if at all, and they never get exposed to the Austrian economists, it will be difficult to impossible to sustain our present momentum over the long term.

Dont misunderstand me: I am thrilled at our progress and more optimistic than I have ever been. But as for the long term, I am concerned all this excitement could fizzle if the infrastructure doesnt exist to keep it going. And that means we cant ignore education.

MI: How would you describe your own education? How has the state changed the way that we are educated now compared to then?

RP: I was fairly happy with my education. I went to a public school, yes, but in fairness it was about as good as a government institution can be: we had full local control, no fashionable but silly pedagogy was forced on us, and the students came from solid family backgrounds. We had our troublemakers, but really none of the pathologies we encounter so often today.

MI: You mention Leonard Read more than once in your book. How has he shaped your views of education and freedom?

RP: From Leonard Read, whom I greatly admired, I took a commitment to educating the public in the principles of liberty at every opportunity. Leonard couldnt have imagined the opportunities wed have today with the Internet, homeschooling, and the extraordinary combination of the Internet and homeschooling.

MI: Are online resources for education making it easier for people to educate themselves and others?

RP: Thats putting it mildly! Having the great works of the great thinkers of our tradition, plus articles, speeches, books, and materials of all kinds at our fingertips, simply astonishes me. Even without an organized curriculum to guide someone, anyone who craves knowledge will find it. Thats how so many people wind up discovering the Mises Institute, isnt it?

Ron Paul's Startling Rhetoric: Evil, Dictators, and Armed Revolution

Posted: at 9:41 pm

When former Congressman from Texas Ron Paul reemerged on the national political scene in 2008, he garnered attention for making statements that voters were not used to hearing from Republicans. He was not only against the war, but against the sheer number of bases the US operated overseas. He called for the legalization of drugs, favoring instead a policy of personal responsibility and a libertarian sense of freedom. He also railed against the Federal Reserve Bank and called for a return to the gold standardan idea that most of the world of finance sees as terrible, but remains appealing to a significant percentage of Americans. Even though his views were unconventional, he still seemed to have at least one foot planted in reality.

However, in his first political appearance since leaving Congress, Paul seemed to have adopted a more dire rhetoric. Paul headlined the last rally for Ken Cuccinellis Virginia gubernatorial campaign with a speech that, according to POLITICO, touched virtually every libertarian erogenous zone. He called the tax penalty in the Affordable Care Act evil and suggested that they would lead to open generational and class warfare. Earlier in the speech he spoke about the Second Amendment saying, it is not there so you [can] shoot rabbits, and warning of an internal threat to our liberty.

These comments, among others at the speech, prompted Mother Jones to suggest in a headline, Ron Paul Basically Called for Armed Revolution This Week. While Paul does have a history of making politically outlandish statements in the past, these latest remarks suggest a troubling change in tone that seems to paint the possibility of compromise as hopeless. Such carelessness with languagee.g. tossing out terms like dictator or tyranthas a doubly troubling effect. Those who dont agree stop listening, and those who do start being afraid. Thus far, this strategy has only lead to campaign fundraising and increased voter turnout (one way or another), but if rhetorical escalation continues Pauls prophecies may become self-fulfilling.

Marco Rubio, Ron Paul Pump for Cuccinelli

Posted: November 5, 2013 at 7:40 pm

Nov. 05--In a finale to his struggling campaign, Republican Ken Cuccinelli was embraced at a Richmond rally Monday night by tea party favorite Ron Paul and declared the Virginia governor's race a prelude to a statehouse fight over implementing President Barack Obama's troubled health care reform.

"Virginia is the next battleground for Obamacare," said Cuccinelli, alluding to a possible expansion of Medicaid under the federal health care overhaul. "I have an opponent who says Obamacare doesn't go far enough.... Why would we expand a proven failure?"

In 2010, Cuccinelli was the first state attorney general to challenge the Affordable Care Act in federal court.

Paul, a former Texas congressman who has run for president as a Libertarian and as a Republican, told about 400 Cuccinelli supporters at the Greater Richmond Convention Center that Cuccinelli is a fighter whom Democrats "want to humiliate (because they) stand up to the federal government."

Urging Cuccinelli's election, Paul said -- without mentioning Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe by name -- "that other guy (will) be nothing more than a buddy of Obama and (New York City Mayor Michael) Bloomberg."

Earlier Monday, in Culpeper, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., lent his conservative star power to help get out the vote for Virginia's Republican ticket, braving chilly temperatures and political headwinds in the D.C. ex- urb.

Rubio and Cuccinelli focused on what has become the key opponent in the race -- not McAuliffe, but the Affordable Care Act.

"Only six people signed up for it on the first day, and the problem with that is they had promised free steak knives to the seventh," Rubio quipped to the bundled-up audience of around 200 supporters.

They gathered in Yowell Meadow Park to see Cuccinelli, lieutenant governor hopeful E.W. Jackson and state Sen. Mark Obenshain, who is running for attorney general.

"I think clearly this is one of the first opportunities that Americans have had to speak out on the role of federal government in the aftermath of the implementation of Obamacare, which is hurting real people," Rubio told reporters.

Ron Paul: “Nullification” is coming!

Posted: at 7:40 pm

Speaking at a rally for Virginia GOP gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli on Monday, former congressman and libertarian darling Ron Paul claimed to see nullification of federal law by the states in the near future.

According to Politico, Paul told a crowd of Cuccinelli supporters that Ive been working on the assumption that nullification is going to come. Its going to be a de facto nullification. Its ugly, but pretty soon things are going to get so bad that were just going to ignore the feds and live our own lives in our own states.

Beyond promoting nullification, the 19th century doctrine, popular in the antebellum South, which held that states had the right to invalidate any federal law they deem unconstitutional, Paul urged Cuccinellis followers to stand up to the authoritarians.

Theyre dictators, Paul said.

Paul also railed against Obamacare, calling its funding mechanisms evil and arguing theyll create class warfare, generational warfare.

More from Politico:

Cuccinelli brought Paul in to limit the bleeding of support to Libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis, who has pulled double digits in some polls and threatens to be a spoiler Tuesday.

Paul, who won 40.5 percent in a two-way Virginia Republican primary against Mitt Romney last year, did not mention Sarvis by name, but he attacked him for floating a tax on the number of miles a car drives.

Thats insane, said Paul. What kind of an invasion of privacy is that! Ken is quite correct on the tax issue: no new taxes.

Paul said Cuccinelli has established a reputation for being unyielding, where you know hes not gonna back down.
