Former Congressman Ron Paul has launched a petition to attempt to garner clemency for NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. The "Demand Clemency for Edward Snowden" petition includes the clip below, Paul calls on supporters to sign the petition in an attempt to bring Snowden home to the US safely before his temporary visa in Russia expires in July.

On the heels of his son Rand Paul's lawsuit against the Obama nd the NSA seeking to stop its collection of phone metadata, Ron Paul states "Edward Snowden shocked the world when he exposed the NSAs illegal and abusive spying program. Instead of applauding him for his bravery and patriotism, the U.S. government labels Snowden a traitor."

By signing this petition, Paul notes on his Channel's website, "you are telling the US government that Mr. Snowden deserves the right to come home without the fear of persecution or imprisonment."

Ron Paul Launches Clemency Petition For Edward Snowden

Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) has started a petition demanding clemency for the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor who revealed its metadata surveillance program.

Edward Snowden sacrificed his livelihood, citizenship, and freedom by exposing the disturbing scope of the NSAs worldwide spying program. Thanks to one mans courageous actions, Americans know about the truly egregious ways their government is spying on them, Paul says in a video on his Ron Paul Channel website, which he started last summer.

The petition asks supporters to sign the petition to bring Snowden back to the United States before his status of temporary asylum in Russia expires in late July.

By signing this petition, you are telling the U.S. government that Mr. Snowden deserves the right to come home without the fear of persecution or imprisonment, the webpage says.

The campaign comes as Pauls son, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), filed a class action lawsuit on Wednesday against President Obama, the NSA and others involved in the governments surveillance activities.

Sen. Paul has strongly criticized the NSAs domestic metadata program, but doesnt appear to agree with his father on clemency for Snowden.

In an interview last month on ABCs This Week, Sen. Paul said he doesnt support clemency for Snowden, but said he would favor a lesser sentence than life in prison or the death penalty.

"I think the only way he's coming home is if someone would offer him a fair trial with a reasonable sentence," Paul said.

Attorney General Eric Holder recently said he would be open to having a conversation if Snowden accepts responsibility for leaking highly classified government information.

Washington (CNN) -- Rand Paul v. Barack H. Obama.

That's the name of a lawsuit the Kentucky senator announced Wednesday against President Barack Obama and national security officials over government surveillance.

"We don't do this out of disrespect to anyone we do this out of respect to the Constitution," Paul said at a news conference.

Paul's class-action suit, filed in federal court in Washington, was spurred by Edward Snowden's public disclosure last year that the NSA had gathered information on nearly every telephone call made in the United States since 2006.

At a news conference, Paul called the legal challenge "an important first step" to ending the program that sweeps up numbers and other information known as metadata.

With the suit, the son of Libertarian hero Ron Paul, who captured the hearts and minds of millions during his two presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2012, is rounding out his political persona through his Libertarian roots and adding another spoonful of political savvy.
