Ron Livingston to Play Paul Revere in AMC Comedy Pilot

Posted: September 15, 2014 at 4:41 am

AMC has found its Paul Revere.

The network's We Hate Paul Revere pilot, its potential foray into scripted comedy, has cast Ron Livingston in the title role. Perhaps best known for his work in comedic films Office Space and Swingers, Livingston most recently enjoyed a TV stint on HBO's Boardwalk Empire.

STORY AMC Orders First Comedy Pilot

We Hate Paul Revere, ordered to pilot back in March, is set to film in Los Angeles this summer. A twist on the period piece, it tells the story of brothers Hugh and Ebenezer Moody both forced to strive for recognition in Colonial Boston among the bigger stars of history, including Paul Revere, the folk hero and subject of poetry for his midnight ride alerting Colonial military that British forces were approaching.

Written and executive produced by and starring Ethan Sandler and Adrian Wenner as the Moody brothers, the half-hour pilot is being produced by AMC Studios. Matt Piedmont, most recently of sister net IFC's Emmy-nominated The Spoils of Babylon, is directing. Troy Miller also serves as an executive producer through Dakota Films

We Hate Paul Revere may be the only comedy in contention at AMC right now, but the network is beefing up its drama pilots most recently ordering Afghanistan drama White City.

Livingston is repped by UTA and Thruline.

Ron Paul's 'Audit the Fed' bill returns to Congress

Posted: September 13, 2014 at 1:41 pm

Ron Paul may not be in Congress anymore, but his Audit the Fed bill lives on after him.

House Republican leaders scheduled a vote on the legislation for sometime in the next week, as one of a series of pre-election bills designed to highlight lawmakers stances just before they go home to face voters.

Mr. Paul made the bill one of his causes, and after years of trying finally pushed it through the House in 2012 on an overwhelming 327-98 vote. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who had previously said he supported an audit of the Federal Reserve, reversed himself.

If Harry Reid refuses to hold the vote before the Senate leaves town, you can help us make sure the American people hear about it all the way until Election Day and build so much pressure by the time Congress returns, the Senate will be forced to act in the Lame Duck, Mr. Paul said in an email to supporters from his advocacy group, Campaign For Liberty.

Mr. Paul retired from the House after the last Congress. The current House version of the legislation is sponsored by Rep. Paul Broun, a Georgia Republican. His version cleared the House oversight committee on a voice vote in July, suggesting continued bipartisan support.

The bill would order the Government Accountability Office, which is Congresss chief investigative arm, to review the Feds decision-making particularly on monetary policy.

Congress established the Federal Reserve nearly a century ago. The system, which consists of a board of governors and 12 regional banks, act as lenders of last resort to the countrys banking system, and it is charged both with fighting inflation and with promoting economic growth and employment.

The Congressional Budget Office said the bill would cost about $5 million for the staff required to conduct the audit. The CBO also said the Federal Reserve would spend money complying with the review, which would end up costing the government about $3 million in lower revenue from the Fed over the next decade.

The previous chairman of the Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, had opposed an audit, saying it could lead to politicians second-guessing the secretive boards decisions. When Mr. Pauls bill came up for a vote in 2012, Mr. Bernanke called it a nightmare scenario.

Mr. Pauls son, Sen. Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican, has a companion bill in the Senate, but that has not seen any action with Democrats controlling the chamber.

Ron Paul to Jesse Ventura on nonviolent drug offenders: Pardon em all

Posted: at 11:41 pm

Welcoming an old friend back to his show last week, former professional wrestler and Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura held a lengthy discussion with ex-congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul, touching on issues as diverse as Americas supposedly looming hyperinflation, President Obamas executive overreach, calling off the war on drugs and shutting down the CIA.

Overall, the interview is a libertarian love fest, with all the good and bad that entails. The two mens discussion of inflation and debt and the evils of Keynesianism is well-worn territory for both and is misguided as ever. But the sections of the interview devoted to the dangers of a foreign policy premised around frequent international interventions as well as those moments when the two discuss the dangerously unaccountable CIA are focused, and keep the libertarian crankery to a minimum.

Perhaps the most engaging part of the interview, however, comes when Ventura and Paul turn to the war on drugs, a policy both believe has failed on the merits while ruining millions of lives in the process. One goal of reform, Paul says, is to not put people in prison for nonviolent crimes and also we have to think about letting those prisoners out [and] pardoning individuals that have committed these crimes that have been nonviolent.

Pardon em all, Paul said. Let em go.

A New Brand Of Paul Gains Support In Iowa

Posted: at 11:41 pm

It's still more than 15 months until the Iowa caucuses, and no one in the crowded field of Republicans with presidential ambitions has announced. But things are already happening in Iowa, especially for Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky.

Paul has reached out to Iowans who never considered voting for his father, Ron Paul, who made a respectable third-place showing there in 2012.

He's still popular with his father's old supporters. Many of them are in the so-called liberty faction of the Iowa GOP.

A group of them meet Tuesday nights in a Des Moines hotel bar for a gathering called "Liberty on the Rocks." These 20 or so liberty Republicans are mostly veterans of the 2012 Iowa campaign of Ron Paul. To them, it was a movement of ideas, not just politics.

For 26-year-old IT specialist Adil Khan, it's about Austrian economics. It's about abandoning policies of tax, spend and borrow. As he explains it, "this idea that if you tax from one area, it's going to be affecting a certain industry or it's going to be affecting the industry as a whole, and it really doesn't create anything."

For 42-year-old Jeremy Goemaat, who owns a computer billing company, it's about a return to the gold standard. Or some other standard private bank notes: "Is it the government's right to outlaw other currencies? Now, if you want to put your trust in small bank X, go for it."

They typically share a profound libertarian mistrust of the federal government, Keynesian economics, the federal reserve, drug laws, and interventionist foreign policies.

Twenty-nine-year-old Lexi Nuzum, who has a sales job with a chemical company, says the liberty worldview came to her when she was a college student, listening to Ron Paul on the radio.

"I thought, gosh, who is this guy? He makes a lot of sense, and I think he was specifically talking about foreign policy at the time. ... Rand, I think his appeal is that he kind of brings in that other crowd," she says. "Independents, a lot of wings of the Republican Party, Democrats even."

Even if they haven't committed yet, Nuzum and the others who gather here weekly are the presumed base of the Rand Paul campaign in Iowa. Four years ago, they saw in Ron Paul a prophetic truth teller, qualitatively unlike his rivals.
