Three-time presidential hopeful Dr. Ron Paul will speak about current news issues ahead of the upcoming mid-term elections this Friday, October 31st, as part of the National Center for Policy Analysis/Hatton W. Sumners Distinguished Lecture Series weekend. Dr. Paul has been very vocal about the November elections, Ebola, ISIS and the Middle East in recent weeks.

Media are invited to attend and cover. Recording is restricted to the first 5 minutes of speech, but a few minutes with Dr. Paul will be available for recorded Q&A after the speech, by request.

Dr. Paul served in the U.S. Air Force as a flight surgeon in the 1960s before winning his first Congressional bid in the mid-1970s and serving nine terms until his retirement last year. Paul made three unsuccessful bids for nomination as a presidential candidate as a Libertarian in 1988 and as a Republican in 2008 and 2012.

In Congress, Paul served on the House Banking Committee, where he was a strong advocate for sound monetary policy and an outspoken critic of the Federal Reserve. He also was a key member of the Gold Commission, advocating a return to a gold standard.

Paul continues to work for limited constitutional government through organizations he has founded, including the Foundation for Rational Economics and Education (FREE), Campaign for Liberty, and Liberty PAC, and his online network The Ron Paul Channel. His son, Rand, has been the junior GOP senator for Kentucky since his election in 2011.

In recent months, retired congressman and Libertarian darling Ron Paul has made pronouncements on Ebola, secessionist movements and terrorism in Canada that appear designed to stoke controversy, even as his son Rand tries to stake out less fraught territory in preparation for a likely presidential campaign.

Ron Paul piped up Sunday following a series of attacks on members of the military in Canada that investigators believe are likely tied to jihadist ideology.

Though horrific, it should not be a complete surprise that Canada found itself hit by blowback last week, Paul wrote in a column. That is the danger of intervention in other peoples wars thousands of miles away. Those at the other end of foreign bombs and their surviving family members or anyone who sympathizes with them have great incentive to seek revenge. This feeling should not be that difficult to understand.

Pauls recent spate of controversial public pronouncementsas a professional provocateur he rarely makes any other kindare fast becoming a political liability for his son Rand, who is widely expected to mount a campaign for the White House in 2016.

As his soapbox of late, Paul is chiefly using Voices of Liberty, a Ron Paul-centric subscription news and commentary service launched in July, the newest of several overlapping organizations built around Ron Pauls personal brandThe Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity, Ron Paul Curriculum and The Foundation for Rational Economics and Education. Voices of Liberty amplifies the messages of freedom through insightful news coverage, engaging shows and your involvement!, according to the groups website. The flurry of activity around the new site has revived an old challenge for the Paul family.

Ron Paul Inc.s most widely noted declaration of late was the suggestion that the insecticide DDT be used as an Ebola treatment (at present the only known Ebola treatments experimental and DDT is not among them). In fact, Ron Paul never said such a thingit appears to have been a mistake inserted into a Voices of Liberty press release by a PR rep. In any event, it wouldnt be the first time statements attributed to Ron Paul, possibly falsely, have become problematic for his son. Rand has already spent more time than he would like distancing himself from his dads notoriously shrill and racist newsletters from the 1990s, which the elder has contended were written not by him personally but by a staffer.

In a column Sunday, Paul made the dubious-at-best claim that the people of Liberia and other countries would be better off if the U.S. government left them alone. The sentiment is vintage Ron Paul, his austere libertarianism taken to its logical extreme, but hard to reconcile with a society and economy that have come to a screeching halt as Ebola drives people out of public spaces.

Its not just Pauls outlandish statements that could be problematic for Rand Paul.

On Ebola the senior Paul has been at odds with Rand, who has devoted considerable airtime to stoking fears over the disease, suggesting it is more contagious and the threat to American society more serious than the government has let on. In contrast, Ron Paul has suggested the exact opposite: that the government is exaggerating Ebola fears, perhaps for nefarious purposes.

(Kitco News) Although it is unlikely Switzerlands gold referendum will pass, one U.S. politician said the country is embarking on a healthy conversation regarding the role of its national bank.

Former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, who is a strong proponent of gold-backed currencies, said in an exclusive interview with Kitco News the fact a referendum on gold reserves was triggered in Switzerland demonstrates that people around the globe are starting to question the reliability of fiat currencies.

On Nov. 30 Swiss voters will vote on three initiatives as part of the gold referendum: whether or not the Swiss National Bank should increase its gold reserves to 20%, that the central bank should stop selling its precious metals and that all its gold should be held within the country.

People are starting to talk about gold more and they should, he said. (The referendum) is one more step in the direction of proving that paper money, fiat money, money created by politician out of thin air to subsidize big government and monetize debt is going to end.

Although recent polls showed some popularity for the Save our Gold initiative, which was first launched in 2013 by the Swiss Peoples Party, Paul said there is a concerted effort by the Swiss government to oppose the initiative. He added that he is expecting as the Nov. 30 deadline looms closer to see stronger fear tactics from the Swiss government and the Swiss National Bank to convince people to vote against the initiative.

When our crisis hit there was panic and people were scared to death. Even conservatives who didnt believe in bailing out the banks were frightened into it, he said. But if you had a clean vote and just simply ask the question: should Switzerland hold its own gold should the central bank hold a certain amount of gold in reserves. I think you would get an overwhelming yes.

However, he added that no matter what happens with the vote it is the discussion that is the most important.

A lot of the attention of the Swiss gold referendum has been focused on the need for the national bank to buy about 1,500 metric tons of gold to boost its gold reserves to 20% of its total foreign reserves, if it passes. Paul said just as important, the central bank will have to hold all its gold within the country. Currently, the Swiss National Bank holds 70% of its gold and 20% is held with the Bank of England and 10% is held with the Bank of Canada.

That is a natural and normal healthy instinct and I think other countries ought to do it, he said. Its sort of like holding gold for personal reasons If I am holding gold for emergency reasons, I want to know where it is and I want access to it.
