10 who might have an impact on 2016 campaign
Posted: January 2, 2015 at 7:43 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - In the year that will pass before the 2016 campaign for president formally kicks off with the votes in the Iowa Caucus, any number of candidates, donors, political operatives - and people who have nothing to do with American politics - will shape the race for the White House. Here's a look at 10 people (OK, 12 people) who will be worth watching in the next year.
1. Elizabeth Warren, Potential Rival
The populist senator from Massachusetts is, at the dawn of 2015, the only person who appears able to mount a competitive challenge to Hillary Rodham Clinton in the race for the Democratic nomination. The architect of President Barack Obama's consumer financial protection agency, Warren would be able to quickly raise millions from an already enthusiastic following. She has repeatedly insisted she is "not running for president," but her consistent use of the present tense has left some liberals begging her to get into the race.
2. Steve Robertson, Backroom Ally
The bespectacled chairman of the Republican Party of Kentucky will have a busy 2015 - thanks in no small measure to the political aspirations of the state's junior senator, Rand Paul. As Robertson works to elect a Republican governor for only the second time in 44 years, he will have to figure out whether to help Paul run for president and re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2016 - something nominally barred by Kentucky law. Options include moving up the state's primary or changing the party's rules, but no matter what path Paul's team takes, Robertson will be the man selling it to the public.
3. Paul Fishman, Prosecutor
As U.S. attorney for New Jersey, Paul Fishman is leading the federal criminal investigation into a scheme to create traffic jams on a bridge that links New Jersey with Manhattan - a political scandal that still hangs over the political ambitions of Gov. Chris Christie. There is no evidence linking Christie directly to the effort to tie up traffic on the bridge, but even if he is formally cleared by Fishman, the federal prosecutor could announce a string of indictments against the governor's former staffers, aides and appointees just as he's announcing his candidacy for president.
4. John Podesta, Steady Influence
A senior adviser to President Barack Obama, Podesta is a trusted Democratic counselor and environmental policymaker who served as Bill Clinton's White House chief of staff. Podesta has said he doesn't intend to leave the White House until Obama's mid-January State of the Union address and could serve as Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman. If he joins the campaign, Podesta would provide stability to an organization that was plagued by infighting in 2007 and 2008 and could help Clinton navigate the party's liberal wing and the final term of Obama's administration.

Federal Reserve audit push gains momentum with Republican Senate majority
Posted: January 1, 2015 at 7:41 am
After years of being blocked by Democratic leader Harry Reid, the Senate will finally get a chance next year to vote on legislation to force a broad audit of the Federal Reserves decision-making.
Once championed in Congress by former Rep. Ron Paul, the push to force the countrys central bank to undergo a full audit has been picked up by his son, Sen. Rand Paul, and others, and has the backing of the leader of the new Republican majority, Sen. Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, whose office says the legislation will earn a floor vote.
But despite overwhelming support in the House, where the legislation has twice passed, the bill is not a sure thing in the Senate, and the Fed itself is pushing back. Chairwoman Janet L. Yellen said earlier this month the Fed remains opposed to stricter oversight of its monetary policy decisions, and Reuters reported she and other Fed officials are lobbying Capitol Hill to drop the audit push.

Back in 1978 Congress explicitly passed legislation to ensure that there would be no GAO audits of monetary policy decision-making, namely policy audits. I certainly hope that will continue, and I will try to forcefully make the case for why thats important, Ms. Yellen told reporters at a press conference two weeks ago.
For supporters in Congress, the fight is a matter of constitutional prerogatives and good governance. They argue that President Obamas 2009 Recovery Act, which totaled $800 billion in spending and tax cuts, was dwarfed by the trillions of dollars of stimulus the Federal Reserve oversaw.
Theyve had luck in the House, where legislation calling for an audit has passed twice, including most recently in September on a 333-92 vote. All but one Republican, and more than half of the Democrats in the chamber, voted for the legislation.

But Mr. Reid, Nevada Democrat, refused to give the bill floor time in the Senate, bottling it up in both 2012 and 2014.
Norm Singleton, vice president of policy at Campaign for Liberty, Ron Pauls political organization, said that was striking because, in 2010, Mr. Reid had seemed to throw his support behind doing an audit.

If you're a politician and your chummy past with neo-Nazis resurfaces, don't worry. Ask Ron Paul

Steve Scalise was, like, into palling around with neo-Nazis way before any other Republican made it cool. Photograph:
Im not a fan of hot takes, but this time Im putting my foot down. Nazis are bad.
But apparently some kids missed the public service announcements about it. Louisiana Representative Steve Scalise, the House GOP Whip and third-highest ranking member of the House GOP leadership tried to groove on Nazism in 2002, appearing at a convention of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO), which was founded by Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard and neo-Nazi David Duke.
Thankfully, now that his appearance has been unearthed, the Scalise spin machine is on it: Throughout his career in public service, Mr Scalise has spoken to hundreds of different groups with a broad range of viewpoints, said Scalise spokesperson Moira Bagley. Ahh, yes, and theres the expected out he was there, but he only exhaled.
She went on: In every case, he was building support for his policies, not the other way around.
Ordinarily, this would sound like a weaselly excuse ie The candidate has many speaking appearances on his schedule and, for the most part, thats exactly what Bagley seems to be selling. But she really has no idea what a solid excuse it is this time. Just this once, it doesnt have to be hot air.
After all, its probably not hard to turn a neo-Nazi into a potential Republican voter by telling him that a corporatized, authoritarian, nationalistic, militaristic party is the only thing standing between him and effete, war-losing, left-wing elites who are trying to destroy the homeland via a fifth-column of non-native minorities, college professors, homosexuals and other cultural degenerates.
Hell, Im not even mad about Scalise. Im just disappointed.
First of all, these people didnt even have the decency to be an original source of Nazism. Theyre just neo-Nazis, which is like hipster Eurotrash for racial violence. (Christ, doesnt America make anything anymore?) Sure, the neo-Nazis add a few American and novel elements to original Nazism, but they all sound like extra instruments in a cover song.
David Duke peddled all-new Holocaust denial what with the Holocaust having already happened when he was running for office, unlike in the 1930s when American Nazism was a new scene. Theres the reverence for the constitution in the American strain of neo-Nazism, which youd expect. And they want to abolish the IRS, a position with which Scalise probably agrees irrespective of whether the agency might also be used as an instrument of Jew/United Nations/Trilateral Commission control. But as for the rest of neo-Nazisms ideology, its just stale: the fifth-column thing, the hatred of unions (unless replaced by ones directed by the right sort of people), the love of full employment for male citizens and women working only in the home, the hatred for homosexuals. Maybe that was a new trip 80 years ago, but youd think they could bring something new to the conservatives marketplace of ideas already.

Ron Paul On The Real Meaning Of The 1914 Christmas Truce
Posted: at 5:42 am
Submitted by Ron Paul via The Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity,
One hundred years ago last week, on Christmas Eve, 1914, German and British soldiers emerged from the horrors of World War One trench warfare to greet each other, exchange food and gifts, and to wish each other a Merry Christmas. What we remember now as the Christmas Truce began with soldiers singing Christmas carols together from in the trenches. Eventually the two sides climbed out of the trenches and met in person. In the course of this two day truce, which lasted until December 26, 1914, the two sides also exchanged prisoners, buried their dead, and even played soccer with each other.
How amazing to think that the celebration of the birth of the Prince of Peace could bring a brief pause in one of the most destructive wars in history. How sad that it was not to last.
The Christmas Truce showed that given the choice, people do not want to be out fighting and killing each other. It is incredibly damaging to most participants in war to face the task of killing their fellow man. That is one reason we see today an epidemic of PTSD and suicides among US soldiers sent overseas on multiple deployments.
The Christmas Truce in 1914 was joyous for the soldiers, but it was dangerous for the political leadership on both sides. Such fraternization with the enemy could not be tolerated by the war-makers. Never again was the Christmas Truce repeated on such a scale, as the governments of both sides explicitly prohibited any repeat of such a meeting. Those who had been greeting each other had to go back to killing each other on orders from those well out of harms way.
As much as governments would like to stamp out such humanization of the enemy, it is still the case today that soldiers on the ground will meet and share thoughts with those they are meant to be killing. Earlier this month, soldiers from opposing sides of the Ukraine civil war met in eastern Ukraine to facilitate the transfer of supplies and the rotation of troops. They shook hands and wished that the war would be over. One army battalion commander was quoted as saying at the meeting, I think it's a war between brothers that nobody wants. The top brass should sort things out. And us? We are soldiers, we do what we're told.
I am sure these same sentiments exist in many of the ongoing conflicts that are pushed by the governments involved -- and in many cases by third party governments seeking to benefit from the conflict.
The encouraging message we should take from the Christmas Truce of 100 years ago is that given the opportunity, most humans do not wish to kill each other. As Nazi leader Hermann Goring said during the Nuremberg war crimes trials, naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. But, as he added, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.
This is where our efforts must be focused. To oppose all war propaganda perpetrated by governments against the will of the people.
