Psoriasis - the disease

Psoriasis is a chronic non-contagious inflammatory skin condition that affects approximately 40,000 Singaporeans[1], and up to three in every hundred people globally[2]. It is also one of the top ten most common skin diseases in Singapore[3], but is little understood amongst the general public, earning it a social stigma for its highly visible effects on human skin, such as thick, silvery scales and pink raised skin. Hence, Psoriasis also exerts a psychological toll on patients, with a 44 percent increased risk of suicide, a 39 percent increased risk of depression, and a 31 percent increased risk of anxiety. Patients with severe psoriasis have a 72 percent increased risk of depression[4].

The need for the PsorCARE program

Many patients require a deeper and better understanding of the disease and the treatment options, which can be achieved with improved access to information through healthcare professionals. With professional counseling readily available, patients have the necessary support to better able to manage both the physical and psychological toll from living with Psoriasis.

In some cases, patients with psoriasis had nearly 3 times the risk of experiencing these conditions compared with people without psoriasis. The risk was greater in patients with severe psoriasis.

The findings add to a growing body of research linking psoriasis with heart and blood vessel problems, including an increased risk of heart attack and death from cardiovascular disease.

"In recent years, psoriasis has certainly taken the step from a disease affecting appearance to a systemic disease and cardiovascular risk factor," said study researcher Dr. Ole Ahlehoff, a cardiologist at Copenhagen University Hospital Gentofte.

Patients with psoriasis should be monitored for indicators of cardiovascular disease, including heart arrhythmias, Ahleoffsaid.

And these patients may be candidates for interventions that will reduce cardiovascular disease risk, including lifestyle modifications, such as quitting smoking and getting more exercise, and in some cases, medications, Ahlehoff said.

Biotechnology firm Biocon today said it plans to launch skin disease drug under the brand Alzumab in the country in the current year and aims to garner Rs 100 crore in sales in the next four years.

"We expect it (Alzumab) to be a Rs 100 crore product in next four years," Biocon Chairman and Managing Director Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw told reporters in a conference call.

Shaw said that the company invested "little less than Rs 100 crore on developing the product" and added the company was confident that "we will recover it".

Earlier this year, the company had received approval from drug controller (DCGI) to market 'Itolizumab', used in the treatment of psoriasis. It would be launched under the brand name, Alzumab.

The global Psoriasis market size is estimated to cross $8 billion by 2016.

A novel biologic indicated for the treatment of Moderate- to-Severe Psoriasis, Alzumab will be marketed by Biocon's immunotherapy division, the company had said earlier.

The product would be manufactured and formulated as an infusion drug at Biocon's biopharma manufacturing facility at Biocon Park, Bangalore.

When asked about her views on compulsory licensing issue, Shaw said on a personal level she does not favour the law.

"It should be the last option rather than the first," she said.

According to WTO agreement, a compulsory license can be invoked by a national government through allowing someone else to produce a patented product or process without the consent of the patent owner, to protect interest of the larger public.

London, January 26 (ANI): Kim Kardashian, who's psoriasis failed to clear up after using numerous lotion and potions, along with her sister Kourtney has revealed their home made remedy for the skin condition in a new outrageous episode of their reality show.

In a promotional clip for Sunday's show, the 32-year-old is seen yelping as Kourtney squirts breast milk directly from her chest onto her sister's leg.

The reality star, who is currently pregnant with her first child with rapper Kanye West, is seen screeching as Kourtney leans over her to drip the milk on her psoriasis spots.

The socialite had used mother-of-two Kourtney's breast milk before, after reading online that it could help clear up the lesions on her legs.

However, she wasn't quite expecting it to come this time, as she puts it, "fresh off the boob."

At the beginning of the clip, the sisters are seen in their Miami house, where Kim is musing over her psoriasis spots.

Obliging Kourtney immediately comes to the rescue, telling Kim to lean back and relax, and it is then that Kourtney takes one of her breasts out of her bra and squirts the milk over Kim's legs.

"Are you serious? I don't want to do this. Never mind!" the Daily Mail quoted Kim as saying.

"Are you really going to do this? Ew! Ew! That is so disgusting that you can just squeeze that and have it come out," she said.

Kim then instructs Kourtney to rub it into her leg.
