Psoriasis Increases Risk Of High Blood Pressure

Current ratings for: Psoriasis Increases Risk Of High Blood Pressure

4.5 (2 votes)

Psoriasis is a critical, inflammatory, noncommunicable disease that affects over 125 million people internationally. People with psoriasis are known to have an elevated risk of developing grave co-morbid conditions, such as:

Lars Ettarp, President of IFPA, commented:

There are studies indicating that treating psoriasis early and efficiently lowers the risk for co-morbid conditions, such as high blood pressure, and this needs to be taken into account when developing a treatment regimen for an individual with psoriasis."

This year's World Health Day aimed to highlight the global health crisis of high blood pressure and how it can be avoided, treated, and controlled. Issues associated with high blood pressure cause over 9 million deaths annually around the world and affect more than one in three adults, according to the WHO.

High blood pressure is also linked to several behavioral risk factors, including:

A separate study from 2009, conducted by the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston, suggested that psoriasis is associated with an increased risk of diabetes and high blood pressure in women. They said more studies need to be carried out to determine whether treating psoriasis might also reduce the risk of diabetes and hypertension.

In other research released last year, psoriasis patients were encouraged to be aware of their condition and its link to other serious illnesses. These patients are at an increased risk for insulin resistance, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and abnormal levels of cholesterol.

International Federation of Psoriasis Associations: People with Psoriasis have Increased Risk of High Blood Pressure

Posted: at 10:57 pm

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The International Federation of Psoriasis Associations, IFPA, commends the World Health Organization for raising awareness of the risks associated with high blood pressure and calls for healthcare professionals to regularly scan for the condition in patients with psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a serious, inflammatory, noncommunicable disease, affecting more than 125 million people all over the world. People with psoriasis are known to carry an increased risk of developing severe co-morbid conditions such as diabetes and psoriatic arthritis, as well as depression and even suicidal ideation[i]. A number of studies also show that psoriasis is associated with greater prevalence of hypertension[ii], one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease[iii].

Healthcare professionals need to recognize the elevated risk that people with psoriasis carry for developing high blood pressure, and include regular tests for hypertension and other known risk factors of cardiovascular disease for this patient group, says Lars Ettarp, President of IFPA. There are studies indicating that treating psoriasis early and efficiently lowers the risk for co-morbid conditions, such as high blood pressure, and this needs to be taken into account when developing a treatment regimen for an individual with psoriasis.

This years World Health Day focused on the global health crisis of high blood pressure and how it can be prevented, treated and controlled. According to the WHO, complications of high blood pressure account for more than 9 million deaths worldwide per year and affects more than one in three adults[iv]. High blood pressure has been connected to a number of behavioral risk factors, such as high salt intake, excessive use of alcohol and physical inactivity.[v]

However, it must also be acknowledged that there are other markers for hypertension and cardiovascular disease, namely genetic conditions and inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis; conditions that cannot be prevented, but in most cases can, and need to, be treated in order to minimize the risks of further complications.

The International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA)

The International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA) is the non-profit umbrella organization for the majority of psoriasis associations from around the world. Today IFPA has 51 member associations covering all regions of the world. IFPA unites psoriasis associations so that their global campaign for improved medical care, greater public understanding and increased research will improve the lives of the more than 125 million people who live with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis. IFPA is actively campaigning for recognition of psoriasis as a serious, noncommunicable disease by the World Health Organizations member states.

Can Merck Field a Psoriasis Blockbuster?

Posted: April 8, 2013 at 4:43 pm

Targeting psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other immune diseases has created some massive markets over the last decade. How massive? The market was sized up at an estimated $72.2 billion in 2010, according to BCC Research -- and growth isn't slowing any time soon. That's good news for patients, too. The pharmaceutical industry's fascination with an improved understanding of biologics has led to dozens of drugs that treat the underlying causes of diseases, rather than small molecules of years past that only treated symptoms.

Few companies haven't joined the rush to develop biologics and novel small molecule classes to treat immune diseases. While some companies got a big head start over the field, next-generation therapies are being developed in pipelines across the industry. Merck (NYSE: MRK) is one company looking to capitalize on the trend and will shortly begin phase 3 trials on its leading psoriasis biologic therapy candidate. Going by the catchy pipeline name of MK-3222, the drug has huge potential if it ever receives approval from the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA.

About that competition I mentioned...Older therapies aren't exactly losing their grasp on the markets they took by storm just yet. A quick look at 2012 sales data from the first three biologics approved that work by inhibiting the TNF-alpha protein -- integral to immune system communication -- shows exactly that.
