Almost ten years ago, the group led by Erwin Wagner, currently at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), developed genetically modified mice showing symptoms very reminiscent to psoriasis. After publishing this discovery in Nature, the researchers decided to use this mouse model to study the underlying molecular pathways involved in disease development, and to look for innovative and efficient therapies. Now the group has discovered two possible novel treatments, based on existing pharmacological compounds, which are likely to cause fewer side effects.

Psoriasis affects up to 3% of the world's population and can seriously affect the quality of life of these patients. The primary causes are largely unknown and the disease is not curable. The latest generation of drugs developed to combat it - so-called biological therapies - are thought to be a big step forward, but can only be applied for limited periods of time due to serious side effects, which can generate other forms of psoriasis, or even cause tuberculosis or leukaemia. Due to this it is important for psoriatic patients to develop efficient non-toxic treatments.

The two new strategies now published by CNIO researchers are the result of in-depth studies of the disease biology that have revealed some of the underlying molecular causes.

In the first study published in the December issue of the high impact journal Immunity, it is shown how the symptoms of psoriasis disappear by deleting a protein called S100A9. In the second article, which is published in Science Translational Medicine, the researchers show that inhibiting a non-coding micro RNA, named miR-21, ameliorates the disease symptoms.

As Helia Schnthaler, the first author, and collegues write in Immunity: "over the past decade, biological therapies have been shown to be effective against inflammatory diseases. These treatments, however, are a cause of worry due to their side effects, which might cause a possible increase in the risk of infection or cancer. The development of efficient, locally applicable drugs without these side effects, therefore would be beneficial for patients with psoriasis". Specifically, S100A9 inhibiting strategies "have the potential to become effective new treatments against psoriasis", the authors state.

In the article in Science Translational Medicine, which features Juan Guinea-Viniegra as the lead author, the authors state that: "blocking miR-21 could offer advantages over current treatments given that the efficiency obtained is the same and the side effects are probably reduced". The authors highlight that in the mouse model and in patient samples transplanted into mice this new strategy "shows a significant therapeutic response".

MANILA, Philippines A group of psoriasis patients decried latest news reports maligning the disease as communicable.

Psoriasis Philippines founding chairman Josef De Guzman on Wednesday said the case of a patient in Pangasinan who has been diagnosed with psoriasis has been sensationalized by a news report.

De Guzman was reacting to the report of ABS-CBN news program Bandila on Monday night saying that a mysterious flesh-eating illness is slowly spreading in Pangasinan.

I am making an open plea to them for a more responsible reporting because they are not helping other people. They are isolating us instead, De Guzman told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview.

He said that psoriasis is not communicable and added that the news report was maligning.

A lot of our members are now afraid to go out of their houses because of discrimination. There was no outbreak. The report just wants to sensationalize the situation, he said.

He appealed to the media to be responsible in reporting.

Media has been our greatest ally and we hope them to be responsible in news reporting, he said.

He mentioned that Psoriasis Society has a Hug Me campaign which is now on its seventh year to show people that the disease is not communicable.

MANILA, Philippines Ignorance and panic often make the worst combination in cases of a mystery disease and the latest example of how misinformation can fan paranoia and deepen the suffering of people is found in Pangasinan, where fears that flesh-eating bacteria similar to that reported in the US have spread lately.

Moving to stem the panic, the Department of Health (DOH) shot down Tuesday rumors about a "flesh-eating" skin disease, following reports of two suspected cases in Pangasinanone in Villasis town, another in Sta. Barbara.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona was categorical: "There is no reported case of 'flesh-eating' skin disease in the country yet. Absolutely no reason for the public to panic.

In the first case, Pangasinan Rep. Kimi Cojuangco took to Twitter to allay fears after consulting with local health officials familiar with the case of a young man in Villasis town whose family was given many different diagnoses. The man, called Joseph in a TV report, suffers from an acute episode of psoriasis, a chronic skin disease characterized by red patches covered with white scales, as a result of an abnormally rapid way the skin cells grow. In severe cases, it could be associated with or complicate other ailments like arthritis or gout, or immune disorders.

Kimi Cojuangco tweeted at 3 in the afternoon of Tuesday: re the so called plague in Pangasinan.The male patient in Villasis has a very bad case of Erithrodermic Psoriasis and proceeded to share the image of a patient with this ailment that she said she had googled from a medical website and whose manifestations look exactly the same as the Villasis man: pic.twitter.com/0EfZsmMdO7"

Psoriasis is one of the least-understood diseases and one of the countrys foremost experts, Makati Medical Centers Dr. Vermen Verallo-Rowell of the VMV line of hypoallergenics, has spent the past three decades explaining it to people. In an earlier interview with an InterAksyon.com editor, Verallo said people should understand these basic things about psoriasis: one, it is NOT contagious; that episodes are often triggered by changes in weather or climate, stress and too much of the wrong foods; that psoriasis patients need to be in clean surroundings where they wont be at risk of infection; that psoriatic sufferers can lead normal lives especially if they have the support group of family, friends and a community that understands the disease.
