Home Movies Ant-Man Marvel release human-sized Ant-Man trailer teaser

Marvel have released a new human-sized trailer teaser for Ant-Mans upcoming trailer, which is set to premiere during Agent Carter on January 6.

Yesterday, Marvel teased Ant-Man fans by releasing a pint-sized trailer teaser to go along with their pint-sized superhero, but today theyve released the actual trailer teaser, which shows a little over 10 seconds of footage. Watch Ant-Mans actual trailer teaser below:

Now that we can see the footage from Ant-Mans trailer teaser, we see Paul Rudd walking next to a couple rangers/cops, and Evangeline Lilly looking like a total badass. Were definitely thinking she may end up as Wasp at some point in the film.

Other than some quick shots of Pyms lab, theres not a whole lot to look at in this trailer teaser, although we do see the bottom half of Ant-Mans suit at the end.

When Marvel released this footage yesterday as an incredibly tiny teaser, it was a pretty fun gag for a film about the pint-sized superhero. Considering it was the first footage from Ant-Man that had been released, it was even funnier that we couldnt actually see the teaser.

Marvel has confirmed that during Agent Carters premiere on January 6, they will release the first official trailer for Ant-Man, which should give us a much better look at their film adaptation starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly.

Were liking that Marvel is having some fun with this films promotion, as Ant-Man is a major wild card for the studio, and we imagine theyll be looking for other unique ways to successfully promote this film as it heads towards its July 17 release date.

Let us know what you think of the first footage of Ant-Man now that you can actually see the video, and be sure to check back on Tuesday night when the full trailer is released during Agent Carters premiere.

Brainstormers: Obama's big research push kicks off with a meeting of the minds

Posted: January 3, 2015 at 6:41 am

(c) 2015, The Washington Post.

The motley group included men and women, old and young, in sweatshirts and three-piece suits, shod in socks and sandals, wingtips and heels. They were a kind of neuroscience dream team, more than 100 scientists gathered in a Bethesda, Maryland, hotel not to talk about their latest breakthroughs there weren't any yet but to meet and get to know one another.

Eighteen months after President Barack Obama launched an ambitious brain-research initiative, likened by some to the moon shot of the 1960s, federal officials are trying to create a new model for neuroscience research, one that emphasizes innovation and cooperation across specialities and institutions. To do that, they threw a two-day "kickoff" for scientists fortunate enough to have received the first funding slices of what is likely to be a multibillion-dollar federal pie.

The "mixer" in Maryland was organized by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, two of the agencies leading the sweeping scientific effort to develop a complete guide to the anatomy, activity and functioning of the human brain. The government's scientists already had tossed out the playbook on how research usually is done conservatively, competitively and narrowly and had embraced the highest-risk, highest-reward research projects they could identify.

The first grants for the BRAIN Initiative, whose formal name is Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies, were awarded in September; the November mixer provided intellectual cross-pollination for the researchers involved. Now, as the new year starts, the hard, slow grind for answers to some of the most enduring mysteries of the human mind is getting underway.

The architects of the project, which could provide clues to ailments such as Alzheimer's and schizophrenia, wait anxiously in the wings, hoping their efforts will help speed that process. "This can't be business as usual," said one of those architects, Rockefeller University neurobiologist Cornelia Bargmann. "This is a new culture bridging physicists, engineers, biologists, chemists . . . with a big emphasis on showing new results and discoveries."

The impetus for the brain-research effort, announced by Obama in April 2013, was a simple, staggering statistic: 1 in 4 families worldwide includes someone who suffers from a brain injury, disease or disorder, including psychiatric illnesses and developmental disorders, according to MIT's McGovern Institute for Brain Research. In the United States, the economic burden for neurological problems is nearly a half-trillion dollars every year.

That formidable arithmetic fueled the belief that the initiative and everything about it, from its goals to the scientists picked to pursue those goals needed to be innovative.

Participants often compare their mission to the Human Genome Project, the massive, federally funded collaboration that mapped the order of organic compounds in human DNA. Those compounds are fundamental to the growth and development of all organisms in the same way that neurons are key to their functioning. But understanding the precise structure, organization and activity of human brain cells is massively more complex than unraveling human DNA.

There are approximately 86 billion neurons in our brain, and at a minimum those neurons contain 100 trillion synapses, or connections. Identifying synaptic connections is further complicated by the fact that while the genome is essentially fixed, the brain is changing constantly. Every thought, every emotion, every act we perform creates, redirects, strengthens or weakens neural connections.

Candid Discussions: Gissou Nia on Irans Human Rights in 2014

Posted: January 2, 2015 at 7:42 am

Gissou Nia is the Deputy Director of the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran (ICHRI), an independent human rights organization based in New York City. She is an expert on human rights in Iran and on international law. Ms. Nia previously served as Executive Director of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC). Under her leadership, IHRDC produced comprehensive human rights reports and documentations on political prisoners, violation of rights of women as well as those of marginalized groups such as religious and ethnic minorities.

Prior to her tenure at IHRDC, Ms. Nia worked on war crimes trials at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), where she represented former government ministers from Bosnia and Kosovo in pre-trial, trial, and appellate proceedings. Ms. Nia also assisted in proceedings at the International Criminal Court (ICC) related to allegations of crimes against humanity committed during the 2007/2008 post-election violence in the Republic of Kenya.

Ms. Nia lectures and publishes frequently on human rights developments in Iran as well as the rule of law in post-conflict and transitional societies. Her work has been profiled by NPR, CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, Forbes, FPA Blogs, and other major media outlets. Ms. Nia sat down with Reza Akhlaghi of the Foreign Policy Association to discuss Irans human rights record in 2014 and share her perspectives on the challenges the Iranian society faces in greater recognition of human rights.

__________________________________________________________________

How would you describe the state of human rights in Iran in 2014?

The state of human rights in Iran in 2014 is, rather unfortunately, not where we envisioned we would be when we started out the year. Shortly after the inauguration of President Rouhani in August 2013, the Iran human rights community had some cause to be optimistic with the release of more than a dozen prominent political prisoners in September 2013, the publication of a draft Citizenship Rights Charter in November 2013 and a general feeling that the authorities tight grip on personal freedoms might be loosening somewhat.

However, fast-forward a year later and it seems that instead of improvements in line with President Rouhanis campaign pledges to bring civil and social reforms to the country there has actually been regression along a number of human rights indicators. An on-going power struggle between the Rouhani administration and the hardliner-controlled intelligence ministry and judiciary has resulted in new detentions of journalists and activists, with a rising number of individuals arrested for online activities. Womens rights have deteriorated with a series of acid splashing attacks targeting women in Isfahan followed by widely believed to be insufficient response from the authorities to the attacks. The number of executions in the country, particularly for drug-related offenses, has increased since the year priorplacing the Islamic Republic among the worlds leaders in death sentences per capita. Additionally, the leaders of the Green Movement and other civil society actors, who were jailed for their role in events following the disputed June 2009 presidential election, remain imprisoned.

This lack of improvement has not been lost on the international community. Indeed, this lack of improvement in human rights condition was noted in November at Irans Universal Periodic Review (UPR)a process that examines the human rights performance of all 193 UN member states. At the UPR, Irans country peers expressed concern that many of the recommendations made to Iran, which were accepted by the Iranian authorities in the last UPR process four years ago, had yet to be implemented. These recommendations addressed a whole range of issues such as Irans high rate of executions; practice of public and juvenile executions; stoning; restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly; torture; mistreatment of detainees; lack of fair trial standards; due process of law; and discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities.

Rouhanis presidency has consistently come under fire for its lack of progress on the human rights front. The worsening of this situation has been widely interpreted as a demonstration of power plays by Irans hardliners who are determined to dash Iranians hopes for more moderate and liberal socio-political and cultural policies. What do you attribute to the worsening of human rights conditions in Iran over the past year?

Newark prostitution sting focuses on human trafficking

Posted: at 7:42 am

NEWARK, Del. When Newark Police and federal agents carried out a sting at a South College Avenue motel last month, they arrested seven men who allegedly thought they were meeting a prostitute.

However, the officers conducting the operation at the Rodeway Inn had their sights on a bigger target: human traffickers.

Such joint local and federal operations are a common tactic of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcements Homeland Security Investigations division as it seeks to crack down on human trafficking. Though the agency is better known for its immigration enforcement, ICEs HSI division is also responsible for investigating child pornography, sex trafficking and other similar offenses.

Human sex trafficking is defined as prostitution induced by force, fraud or coercion. The victims sometimes children often make arrangements to be brought to the United States only to find themselves forced into prostitution. Other times, it involves young Americans from troubled backgrounds.

Its akin to modern-day slavery, said William Walker, assistant special agent in charge of HSI in Philadelphia.

The Dec. 18 sting in Newark was in response to recent complaints about prostitution at the Rodeway Inn, said Lt. Mark A. Farrall, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.

After posting ads online, undercover officers used phone calls and text messages to communicate with 22 men, seven of whom showed up at the motel and were charged with patronizing a prostitute. Those charged include John Jarrell, 57; Bernard Racey, 44; Robert Fletcher, 22; Suprapto Bonari, 48; Jonathan Caine, 28; Aaron M. Johnson, 38; and James L. Poston, 45. Police withheld the defendants hometowns for unspecified reasons.

An HSI agent accompanied Newark Police during the sting and helped conduct interviews of the suspects, looking for red flag indicators of human trafficking. Similar operations have occurred in cities across the country, Walker said.

The basic idea, authorities said, is to lean on the accused to open up about any past involvement with prostitutes in an effort to get information that could lead to human trafficking rings.

We interview them and see if they can turn us on to any human trafficking victims theyve encountered in the past, Walker said.

The Post-Christmas Purge

Posted: at 2:40 pm

[An unabridged version of a short essay that ran Dec. 26]

In my house, Christmas is a secular holiday built around gifting, followed immediately on the 26th by another secular holiday built around regret.

Its the day everyone returns stuff to the store, particularly the presents that I, the Dad, bought at the last minute without fully considering whether anyone in my house would actually want, for Christmas, a wheelbarrow. But isnt that a practical gift? A wheelbarrow is particularly useful at Christmastime when one needs to convey a large quantity of heavy consumer items from the front door to the car in order to return them to the store.

This day of regret is a time for assiduous purging of anything that can be defined as stuff. Resolved: We have too much stuff. Thus, not only do unwanted, wrongly sized and/or hideously inappropriate gifts (who knew that rhinestone-studded knee-high leather boots werent fashionable this year?) depart the house, so do countless random objects in the house. This stuff is swept away as collateral damage from the general sense of revulsion and I dont think thats too strong a word over the consumerist, materialist madness has incited all of us to overgift one another at Christmas (because we fear someone might feel undergifted and inadequately loved).

How many objects now exist in a typical home? I am guessing that my house contains more than 150,000 distinct objects. Many of them are womens shoes. To my eye, many of these shoes do not appear to be useful for walking. The shapes of the shoes dont seem to match the shape of human feet! Its like, hey, this would be a nice shoe for a species of animal with narrow, tapering hooves.

A few years back, when the daughters were still interested in dolls, we probably had, on any given day, something like 20,000 shoes in the house, which may seem like a high number until you realize Im including the American Girl doll shoes, the Barbie shoes, the Kelly doll shoes, in addition to the shoes worn by the actual humans. Question: Do we really need parallel, non-overlapping, differently sized doll universes? As you know, a dolls shoe is inherently migratory, and is always lost until it is rediscovered when you step on it at 3 in the morning, hopping in pain as your unleash vile curses upon that effing Barbie.

When the girls age out of the doll phase, you have the dilemma of what to do with all that stuff. Sell it at a yard sale? Total strangers will come to your house and look at all your displayed clutter, which is an inherently undignified encounter both for seller and buyer, particularly when the buyer gets a grimace on his or her face that basically says, All this should be piled up and lit on fire.

Some people are great at getting rid of clutter. These are spiritual people who can survive for weeks on oxygen and distilled water alone. But for most of us, clutter not only survives our periodic purges, it continues to reign supreme, dominating the home. Ultimately you have no choice but to surrender. There are entire corners of the basement, attic or garage that are no-go zones.

On the day of regret you may find yourself penetrating one of these areas, fired with clutter hatred. You are subconsciously thinking you can absolve yourself of consumerist lunacy if you load up eightor 10 jumbo garbage bags with about 15,000 unnecessary objects. But the mission is never accomplished. Inevitably, youll discover a box of artwork made by the kids in elementary school. And old Christmas cards from friends you havent seen recently. And mementos of your youth and adventures long ago. Youll lose all momentum, stuck in your stuff marinating in the scrapheap of a modern life.

Veterans stunned by discovery of human remains on VFW grounds

Posted: December 30, 2014 at 5:41 am

The grisly discovery of two sets of human remains on the grounds of a Brockton VFW has stunned members of the post, who say theyve seen enough death.

All the members here are combat veterans, so something like this is upsetting, said post commander James Doherty, a Vietnam veteran who served as a helicopter door gunner.

He said the Veterans of Foreign Wars post owns 20 acres off North Quincy Street that is used by hikers, anglers and bow hunters. But Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said yesterday the land also was used as a dumping ground for at least two sets of human remains.

The dismembered body of a woman believed to be in her 20s was discovered alongside the skeletal remains of another person Sunday.

Brockton police responded to a report of possible human remains about a quarter-mile into the woods off of North Quincy Street at 12:18 p.m. Sunday.

The two bodies, found in close proximity to each other, were in very different stages of decomposition, Cruz said. The more intact body, believed to be a woman in her 20s with medium-length brown hair, had been dismembered, he said. The age and sex of the other, more skeletal, remains, possibly also dismembered, has not yet been determined, Cruz said. The cause and manner of death have not been determined.

Neighbors were rattled by the gruesome find just steps from their backyards.

Im glad they found them when they did, one resident said. Hopefully, they can find out who they are and their families can get some closure.

Another neighbor said she was too distraught to talk about it. Its disgusting, she said.

Alan Tate of Mission for the Missing, a nonprofit organization that helps search for missing people, said investigators will have their hands full determining who killed them, how and why.
