2015 is the International Year of Light (but the universal year of light is in 2533). I think we can all agree that light is very important in just about all aspects of our lives. But what are the key things that every human should know about it? Ok, I am going to give a pass on humans under the age of 7. Younger kids probably know lots of things about light (since they use it all the time) but lets just not worry about them for now. So, if you are over the age of 7, pay attention.

What is a wave? Lets start with an example. Toss a rock into a puddle and you will see something like this:

The rock makes a disturbance in the water (a ripple). This disturbance moves radially outward from where the rock hit. It is the disturbance moving outward, not the water molecules they just move up and down. You can do something similar with a length of string. Place it on the floor and continue to shake one end. The disturbance travels down the string (a heavy string works better).

Lets look at the case of a wave traveling down a string. There are 4 properties that you could consider:

The last three properties are related. The speed of the wave is equal to the product of the wavelength and the frequency.

So, light is a wave. This means that it has all the above properties and can do wavey things such as:

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said yesterday that it is disappointed that Malaysias Federal Court ruled to uphold the imprisonment of opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim.

The Federal Court agreed with a decision made by the Appeals Court in March 2014, which sentenced Anwar to five years in prison on charges of sodomy, a crime that should not exist under international human rights law, said the High Commissioners spokesperson, Rupert Colville, briefing press in Geneva.

Colville said Anwar had faced a number of charges and lengthy judicial processes after removal from the Government in 1998.

There were allegations that that case had been politically motivated and the trial marred by violations of due process rights in relation to the opportunities provided to the defence, raising concerns about the fairness of the judicial process, said Colville. In addition, Mr. Ibrahim had been investigated and his lawyers prosecuted under the 1948 Sedition Act for speaking about the case.

Colville added that OHCHR was highly concerned by the increasing use of the Sedition Act in an apparently arbitrary and selective fashion, against political opposition, human rights activists, journalists, lawyers and university professors in Malaysia since 2014.

Crysis 3 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Crytek, published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. PROVIDENCE, R.I. Steven Costantino, Rhode Islands former Health & Human Services Secretary, has landed a new job as Commissioner of the Department of Vermont Health Access (DVHA).

In making the announcement on Monday, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin said: Were excited to welcome Steven to the team and to Vermont.

I have known Steven since our days serving in our respective state legislatures and understand him to be a dynamic, hands-on leader, Shumlin said of Costantino, the one-time chairman of the House Finance Committee in Rhode Island.

Steven Costantinos experience with Medicaid and healthcare reform will be critical as we move toward providing affordable healthcare coverage for all Vermonters, added Vermonts Agency of Human Services Secretary, Hal Cohen.

In Rhode Island, new Gov. Gina Raimondo opted to appoint former Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts to replace Costantino as the head of the states Executive Office of Health & Human Services.

The EOHHS is the umbrella agency that administers the states Medicaid program and oversees a network of health and human services agencies, including the Department of Children, Youth and Families, the Department of Human Services and its elderly and veterans affairs divisions, the Department of Health, and the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals.

Shumlin noted that in his previous position, Costantino was involved in every phase of implementing Rhode Islands Medicaid expansion and health insurance marketplace, HealthSource RI.

Vermonts current DVHA Commissioner Mark Larson announced in January that he would step down in March.

In the statement issued by Shumlins office, Costantino is quoted as saying: Vermont is known nationally for its leadership, innovation and creative approach to Medicaid I look forward to drawing upon my successful experience in Rhode Island to help Vermont develop its healthcare reform efforts.

Ukraines Azov Battalion, famed for its near-suicidal bravery andultra-nationalist views, is spearheading a Ukrainian counter-offensive along the countrys Black Sea coasttoday.

Posting a picture of their troops on Feb. 10 outside Pavlopil town hall, some 35kilometersnortheast of their base in the strategic port city of Mariupol, the battalion said that it had also seized the villages of Oktyabyr and Shyrokyne on their way to assault the Russian and separatist-held city of Novoazovsk.

Ukrainian flags are already flying on government buildings in Pavlopil, Oktyabyr and Shyrokyne, AzovBattalion press officer Andrii Biletskovo told the Kyiv Post live from the offensive.

Our exact position now is secret, but were going all the way to Novoazovsk.

With Russian-backed forces focused on a fierce battleto wrest control ofthe strategic railwaycity of Debaltseve from Ukraine, the battalion has surged forward along the coast, pushing Russian-backed forces all the way to the town of Sakhanka.

We have absolute control of these places and there is no more resistance, Biletskovo said.

At Sakhanka itself, the AzovBattalion said that Russian-backed forces were fighting back with armor and heavy caliber weapons.

The front around Mariupol has been relatively quiet since Kremlin-backed separatists launched flurries of rockets at a city suburb on Jan. 24, killing 30 people and wounding another hundred.

Forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk Peoples Republic have since poured massed artillery fire on Debaltseve, sending tanks and troops in to capture the towns outlying villages in an attempt to cut off the 8,000 Ukrainian troops dug in there.

The head of UkrainesNational Security and Defense Council, Oleksander Turchynov, was in the Mariupol vicinity on Feb. 10 in order to coordinate the government assault.

The International Commission of Jurists today expressed deep concern over the ruling of the Federal Court upholding the conviction on sodomy charges of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim by the Court of Appeal under the colonial-era Section 377B of the Penal Code.

The decision today was on the final appeal against the March 2014 decision of the Court of Appeal, which overturned the 2012 High Courts decision to acquit Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy charges.

The ICJ has called on Malaysia to repeal Section 377B, which criminalises consensual same-sex relations.

The Federal Court also upheld the Court of Appeals decision to sentence Anwar to five years imprisonment.

It is clear from the decision of the Federal Court today that the Government of Malaysia has once again inappropriately used Section 377B of the Penal Code against its political opponents, said Justice Elizabeth Evatt, Commissioner of the ICJ who was in Putrajaya to observe the proceedings.

This is deplorable, especially since Section 377B criminalises consensual same-sex relations and thereby violates a range of international law and standards, including on the rights to privacy, non-discrimination and equal protection, she added.

This relic of British law has long since been abandoned in the United Kingdom, but is still in force in Malaysia.

However, in the last few years, it has only been used against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

The conviction today amounts to the second sodomy conviction for Anwar Ibrahim within the past 14 years.

Hints of a capacity for universal love can be glimpsed fleetingly today, most commonly on the empathogen 'hug-drug' MDMA (Ecstasy). But a predisposition towards loving each other to bits can also be genetically pre-programmed. This capacity can become innate. Empathetic bliss needn't be a drug-induced aberration. For if the right sort of psychochemical cocktail is automatically triggered whenever anyone one knows is present or recollected, then we can combine absolute, unconditional and uninhibited love for each other with a celebration of the diversity of genes, physiques and cultures. At present this prospect may seem some way off...."
