How a raccoon and a tree became the human heart of Guardians of the Galaxy
Posted: at 6:41 am
Five films are nominated for an Academy Award in the Visual Effects category this year, and they each offer a nice look at the amazing tricks filmmakers and their effects teams can pull off on the big screen. In recognition of these films and one of our favorite Oscar categories, were putting the spotlight on one Visual Effects nominee each day leading up to Sundays broadcast and taking a closer look at what made them stand out.
Previously, we looked at the face-mapping effects in Captain America: The Winter Soldierand the (literally) groundbreaking effects in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Now, we get the scoop on the digitally created duo that were the breakout stars of Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy.
Marvel Studios has made a habit of breaking box-office records with each addition to its rapidly expanding cinematic universe, but it has yet to bring home an Oscar despite multiple films nominated in the Visual Effects category over the years. The studio doubled-down in 2014 with two films earning Oscar nominations, Captain America: The Winter Soldierand Guardians of the Galaxy, but only one of them features a heavily-armed, talking raccoon and a massive, sentient tree with a limited vocabulary.
Possibly more than any other Marvel movie so far, Guardians of the Galaxy proved that the team at Marvel has an uncanny ability to turn any characters whether lesser-known or in this case, barely known into box-office gold.
The team at Marvel has an uncanny ability to turn any characters into box-office gold.
When it comes to the success of CG (computer generated) creatures Rocket Raccoon and Groot, Marvel Studios owes thanks to the talented visual-effects studiosthat brought their supporting characters to life. With these particular characters, Marvel took the unusual step ofdividing the work between two separate VFX studios: Framestore, which developed Rocket Raccoon; and MPC, the studio tasked with creating Groot.
MPC did early tests for both characters and did a good Groot. Framestore did tests for a very good Rocket, recalled VFX supervisor Stephane Ceretti in an interview with StudioDaily. So we decided to use the two companies to balance the load. MPC created Groot and Framestore created Rocket and then they shared.
For its part, Framestore was tasked with finding the balance between the silliness of a walking, talking raccoon that hasan affinity for oversized weaponry and the serious elements of his role in the film and Bradley Coopers voice performance for the character.
If you exaggerate his performance and make him too cartoony youve lost the audience but if you go too real youll end up with something that isnt entertaining or doesnt do Bradleys voice justice, explained Framestores animation supervisor, Kevin Spruce.
Once they settled how to find that balance and had a good visual reference from director James Gunn and the Marvel Studios team, Framestore set about bringing Rocket to life every single hair of him.

"Mort(e)," Highly Original Post-Apocalyptic Read
Posted: February 18, 2015 at 12:40 am
Robert Repinos Mort(e) is a post apocalyptic war novel starring a cast of uplifted cats, dogs, pigs, and of course, giant ants, who, led by their omniscient queen, start an interspecies war to eradicate the human scourge from the planet.
That sounds totally ridiculous, like George Orwells Animal Farm crossed with a 1950s mutated insect movie. In Repinos capable hands, though, Mort(e) is entertaining and intelligent science fiction that can be read as an adventure fantasy, but goes much deeper than that.
Mort(e) is a housecat transformed into a sentient animal with self-awareness, speech, intelligence and hands. What he doesnt know, but comes to realize, is that this transformation is part of a centuries-old plan by the ant queen Hymenoptera to uplift animals into sentience to help the ants exterminate the human species. While the humans scatter across the planet under the ants onslaught, Mort(e) joins a division called the Red Sphinx and builds a reputation as a fearsome fighter under the command of the dangerous bobcat, Culdesac.
The Red Sphinx spends their time fighting the human menace while also investigating EMSAH, a human biological menace that causes animals to go crazy. Mort(e) follows Red Sphinxs mission, but his real motive is to find his pre-transformation friend, a dog named Sheba.
His dedication to Sheba is the heart of the novel. Once a small band of remaining humans contact Mort(e) with word of a prophecy, a vision for a lasting peace, the truth about EMSAH, and news of Sheba, Mort(e) has to make some difficult choices.
A novel about warlike giant ants is pretty clear case of good versus evil, but Reino resists that. He bravely explores the grievances of the queen ant, and imagines what her alien personality would encumber. It turns out shes been nursing a grudge for a long time, and the grudge has a cost.
She had been on the warpath for so many centuries now, absorbing and spitting out the hatred of thousands of generations of her people, that she sometimes wondered if she would have the opportunity to appreciate the beauty and purity she would one day bestow upon the earth.
Mort(e) is a terrific adventure and war fantasy set in a future where the planet has risen to overthrow the humans. Repino provides plenty of chases, battles, and descriptions of a desolated human landscape. Along the way, though, the animals have to wonder whether they are becoming the very thing they have sought to overthrow.

Law School Clinics Release Report Documenting the Devastating Consequences of U.S. Deportations to Haiti
Posted: February 17, 2015 at 6:41 am
A report documenting the failure of the United States to safeguard the human rights of those it deports to post-earthquake Haiti has been released by the Human Rights and Immigration Clinics at the University of Miami School of Law and the International Human Rights Clinic at the University of Chicago School of Law. The report asks the U.S. government to stop deporting Haitians with criminal records until conditions improve and makes additional recommendations to the U.S., Haiti, and the international community, including the extension of Temporary Protected Status to all Haitian nationals.
Speaking at the news conference will be Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat, author of the award-winning novel Brother, Im Dying, and the foreword to the report.
The law school clinics collaborated with Alternative Chance/Chans Alternativ, Americans for Immigrant Justice, Haitian Women of Miami (FANM), and the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti to conduct extensive fact-finding about the treatment of men and women who were deported on account of past criminal convictions, including interviews with more than 100 deportees.
We hope this report moves the U.S. government to stop deportations to Haiti, said Marleine Bastien, Executive Director of FANM. Post-earthquake Haiti is unable to safely receive deportees. These deportees face violence, discrimination, lack of access to medical and mental health care, and an inability to find adequate employment and housing.
In post-earthquake Haiti, deportees from the U.S. face tent cities, deadly cholera, broken homes, and broken hearts, said Michelle Karshan, founder of Alternative Chance. Barriers such as lack of language and family support, and insufficient medical or mental health care and medicine, leaves deportees lost and at risk of death.
Deportations to Haiti affect deportees as well as the family left behind in the U.S., imposing severe financial and psychological strain on the spouses and children of deportees. The government has taken away my father, my best friend, said a teenage girl profiled in the report whose father was deported after the earthquake.
Due to the tragic consequences of the 2010 earthquake, the U.S. granted TPS to eligible Haitians, allowing them to stay in the U.S. temporarily. Excluded from protection under TPS are individuals convicted of two misdemeanors or one felony. As a result, over the past five years, the U.S. has forcibly returned approximately 1,500 men and women, including parents of U.S. citizen children, people with severe medical and mental health conditions, and those with only minor criminal records.
This report would not have been possible without deportees willing to share their stories of the almost insurmountable obstacles they face in post-earthquake Haiti, said Geoffrey Louden, a third-year law student at UM School of Law, who traveled to Haiti in October and worked on the report. We urge policymakers to listen.

Nixon the drunk, Jefferson the glutton and 4 more party-hardy presidents
Posted: at 6:41 am
Presidents are human beings, author Brian Abrams tells The Post. They behave in ways we can relate to.
True. Who among us isnt in the habit of starting every morning with a mug of hard cider, like John Adams? Or casually showing off our genitalia to colleagues, like Lyndon Johnson?
As is plain in Abrams book Party Like a President: True Tales of Inebriation, Lechery, and Mischief from the Oval Office, released this month, being elected commander in chief doesnt make someone above boorish behavior. Not that it necessarily affected job performance.
You cant make this empirical judgment call about whether those who partied performed better than those who didnt, says Abrams, who lives in Brooklyn. You can think of instances where people were total teetotalers and didnt have much of a reach. Someone like LBJ, whose scotch-drinking was almost robotic, is considered a master legislator.
He are six randy anecdotes to celebrate Presidents Day:
Thomas Jefferson, 1801-1809

Our third prez was a foodie before being a foodie was cool. One servant recalled that Jefferson would never eat fewer than eight courses, even when dining alone. He spent the equivalent in todays dollars of nearly $1,000 a day on food, and amassed a monumental wine collection, dropping more than $300,000 on vino during his two terms.

Future Brown's new self-titled album comes out Feb. 24. Courtesy of the artist hide caption
Future Brown is a post-human, post-geographical electronic music collective that is both decidedly human and highly geographical. The four main members hail from far afield (Los Angeles, New York, Kuwait) but live most fully in the drifting state that artists can inhabit when they work the global circuit right. Fatima Al Qadiri is the best-known, with releases on the U.K. labels Fade To Mind and Hyperdub and extra-musical membership in the GCC, a conceptual art project that addresses hyper-real life in the Persian Gulf. Alongside her are Daniel Pineda and Asma Maroof of the club-minded duo Nguzunguzu and J-Cush (of the New York label Lit City Trax). The particulars of the roster, however, are less important than the overall sense that these musicians have a lot going on in many different spheres.
Rappers abound, as well, to fantastic effect. As is the custom in the genre of grime and what gets wrangled together under the catchall term "bass music," mic duties are handed over to a rotating cast and crew, with rhymes flying over beats that strive to sound cohesive and unique. "Room 302" opens with sass and force courtesy of Tink, who invites an otherwise happily attached paramour to stray and avail himself of her many charms ("I know you wanna hit that," she raps, before continuing, "I'm trying to seduce you, I've got a couple hundred ways I can use you"). "Talkin Bandz" follows on a weightier and more concussive note with a heavily AutoTuned DJ Victoriouz slurring alongside fellow Chicagoan Shawnna. Swerving severely again, "Big Homie" pits posse vocals by Sicko Mobb against a dainty sort of digital calypso, complete with a simulacrum of a steel drum.
The rapping taps into a wide variety of techniques and moods, but the production underneath does at least as much work. The guiding principles are a devotion to spacious, fractious beats and allusions to worldly sounds re-imagined for a borderless state of mind. Most common is a kind of all-over worldliness employed by Fatima Al Qadiri on her 2014 album Asiatisch, which plays with notions of Eastern melodies delivered by synthesized strings. But other examples proliferate, from the reggaeton lilt of "Vernaculo" to the Miami-bass-grade boom of "Killing Time." Track by track, with different rappers enlisted, it makes for multiplicity, kind of like a mixtape. As a whole, it's future music for a world faithful to a sense of place, but eager to explore new orbits.
