Detained Post reporter Jason Rezaians family responds to Iran nuclear deal

Posted: April 3, 2015 at 5:41 am

As Iran, the United States and other world powers announced the parameters of a nuclear deal, the family of detained Washington Post Tehran bureau chief Jason Rezaiancalled on Iranian officials to end the judicial delay that has left him in prison for eight months.

The U.S. Government and our negotiating partners have claimed Iran can upholdan international agreement, Rezaians brother Ali Rezaian said in a statement Thursday. Though in Jasons case, for 254 days, Iran has been unable toenforce their own laws or abide by their existing international human rights commitments.

JasonRezaian has been detained in Tehrans Evin Prison for more than eight months, longer than any American journalist before him. He has not met with an attorney, andlittle has been made known about the charges leveled against him.

All Iran has said is that Its complicated, the familystatement reads. Now that a framework agreement has been announced, things should be less complicated.

Irans chief nuclear negotiatorMohammed Javad Zarifhas previously saidhe personally knows Rezaian and called hima fair reporter. So I had hoped all along that his detention would be short. But Zarif also said Rezaian is facing charges by the judiciary as an Iranian citizen.

With a deal in hand after months of hard-fought negotiations, Ali Rezaian said Iranian leadership should review theevidence their underlings claim to have against Jason. If they do, we are certain they will seethat Jason has done no harm to Iran. Otherwise, they should ensure the judiciary stop theirinhumane delays, make public their case against Jason and let the World see why they havestolen 8 months of Jasons life.

The 38-year-oldAmerican-born dual national wasarrested on July 22, 2014, with hiswife, Yeganeh Salehi, an Iranian reporter who was eventually released on bail. Jason Rezaian was allowed to briefly receivemedical treatment in February for infections.

On Thursday, Martin Barton, executive editor of The Post, said in a statement that Iran should have ended this cruel and unconscionable charade months ago, and with the talks now adjourned, there can be no excuse for further delay. It is long past time for Irans leaders to demonstrate fairness and a commitment to abide by Irans own rules, which could only result in Jasons immediate release.

York regional police have charged a 26-year-old man from Quebec in a human trafficking investigation.

Police began the investigation after a female victim reached out for help to get out of the sex trade.

During their probe, officers located a female victim in a hotel room in Vaughan. The female told police she was asked to provide erotic massages to clients, which were brought in by a male, who was suspected of being her pimp.

On Wednesday, police arrested the suspect without incident, after being found driving on Highway 401 near Cobourg.

Alyas Long, also known as the alias Anthony Fernandez, faces several charges, including human trafficking, four counts of sexual assault, and advertising sexual services.

Long was scheduled to appear in a Newmarket court on Thursday.

First human studies promising for made-in-Canada Ebola vaccine

Posted: April 2, 2015 at 5:41 am

The first human trials of a designed-in-Canada Ebola vaccine suggest it is safe and triggers a rapid immune response, studies published Wednesday reveal.

The work, based on six different clinical trials in the United States, Switzerland, Germany, Gabon and Kenya, found the vaccine quickly generates antibodies in people who receive it. Whether those antibodies protect against infection remains to be seen, but early evidence suggests that is a strong possibility.

The vaccine is called rVSV-ZEBOV and was designed by scientists at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, part of the Public Health Agency of Canada. It is being developed by U.S. biotech NewLink Genetics and pharma giant Merck.

Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the research describes Phase 1 clinical trials and shows for the first time what happens when this vaccine is given to a number of people.

Phase 1 trials are designed to show if an experimental product is safe and to help determine what an appropriate dose should be. They are too small to answer the question: Does this vaccine work?

It is hoped the answer will come from larger Phase 3 trials currently underway in West Africa.

The research, grouped into two reports, shows people who received the vaccine started to generate antibodies quickly. That is an attractive feature in a vaccine that would be used to quell future Ebola outbreaks, if it makes it through the licensing process.

There were pretty positive signals of immunogenicity at 14 days post vaccination across both of the (vaccine) doses that are reported, said Col. Stephen Thomas, a senior author of the article describing the findings of the two U.S. trials. Those two trials were conducted at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, both located in Bethesda, Md.

By Day 28, all the vaccinated volunteers had shown an antibody response.

The article reporting on data from the European and African trials revealed that blood from vaccinated subjects contained antibodies that neutralized or killed Ebola virus a finding that adds weight to the belief that this vaccine should protect against infection.

Posthuman by Mr. B. Games Kickstarter

Posted: at 5:41 am

Mighty Box is a game design studio from Malta. The team has taken the development of Posthuman as far as their resources will allow, spending countless hours playtesting the game, polishing the artwork and refining the design. They have teamed up with the folks at Mr. B. Games to help with the production, shipping, fulfillment and distribution, but need your help to fund the actual printing of the game. We have lots of plans for expansion possibilities, and we feel Kickstarter is the perfect platform to realize the full potential of this game.

In Posthuman you play as one of the last human survivors in a world where nature is reclaiming the planet and our mutated offspring are working to eradicate us. Will you resist mutation and survive, or give in to the inevitable and join the mutants?

In the game, players start off as humans on a solitary journey to a rumored fortress harbouring a community of humans. To reach the fortress the players need to complete ten zones successfully. These zones are found on tiles of varying terrain that are drawn by the players as they explore the world. On their travels the players have the opportunity to meet other human players to trade items and use beneficial skills on each other. They will also encounter randomly drawn mutant adversaries and be assailed by players who have switched to the mutant side. Encounters with mutants may inflict scars, and the more scars players have, the closer they will be to mutating and switching sides. Will they strive to cling to their humanity and make a run for the fortress, thus winning the game? Or will they give in to the ever more tempting mutation, join the mutants, and deny the win from the rest of the humans?

Study: Some Ants Have More Taste for Human Food Than Others

Posted: at 5:41 am

It's not just people who love the food in New York City. So do certain ants.

The most common species of ant found on the pavements of New York City and in cities around the world has a taste for human food more than other ant species found primarily in parks and other green spaces, a study says.

"The ants that live alongside us in our cities also seem to be those same species that can eat the same food that we do, and do so the most," said Clint Penick, a post-doctoral fellow at North Carolina State University and lead researcher of the study published Wednesday in the scientific journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

The researchers gathered up samples of more than 20 species of ants from the sidewalks, medians and parks of Manhattan, and tested them to see how much of a particular carbon isotope was in their bodies. That isotope is linked to corn and sugar cane found in much of what people eat, from meat to junk food. Researchers determined that ants eating more human food would have higher isotope levels.

The ant with the highest levels was the pavement ant, Tetramorium species e, which researchers said is the predominant ant on city sidewalks and medians. Among the samples, ants that were from park areas had lower isotope levels than ants that were taken from street medians.

Eating human food could be an advantage for the pavement ants, allowing them to thrive in areas where their natural diet of dead insects and things might not be so prevalent, Penick said.

"Humans bring a ton of general resources," he said. "The species that can take advantage of these resources the best, sort of wins."

Penick said further research would look into whether the ants have a preference for human food even if their natural food sources are available.

Abe confirms he called comfort women victims of human trafficking

Posted: at 10:41 pm

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe confirmed that he described comfort women, mainly Asian females who were forced to provide sex to wartime Japanese soldiers, as victims of human trafficking in a recent interview with The Washington Post.

The remarks provoked a backlash from South Korea. A South Korean official said Saturday that the remarks were a deception if Abe had been attempting to shift the blame for the forcible recruitment of the comfort women to private brokers and deny the governments involvement.

In the interview, published Friday, the newspaper quoted Abe as saying the comfort women had been victimized by human trafficking. His original words in Japanese were not revealed.

During a Diet committee meeting on Monday, Abe confirmed he told the interviewer that comfort women were victims of jinshin baibai, which is usually translated as human trafficking.

There has been a variety of discussions, and human trafficking has been cited in some discussions, Abe said about debate on the comfort women issue.

Olivia Wilde Says Her Post-Baby Body Is "Soft" Like When She "Discovered Krispy Kreme and Pot"

Posted: at 10:41 pm

Olivia Wildes body may forever be changed since welcoming her first child, son Otis with fianc Jason Sudeikis, but having kids is something she cant wait to do again." In a candid interview with Shape magazine, the Drinking Buddies actress, 31, admitted her post-baby body took some getting used to.

PHOTOS: Amazing post-baby bods

I am not in perfect shape. In fact, Im softer than Ive ever been, including that unfortunate semester in high school when I simultaneously discovered Krispy Kreme and pot, the magazines April 2015 cover girl said. The photos of me in this magazine have been generously constructed to show my best angles and I assure you, good lighting has been warmly embraced. The truth is, Im a mother, and I look like one, she added, because, yes, she does look perfectly toned on the cover. See more photos from Olivia's Shape spread here.

While the former model admitted that she loved being pregnant and she felt unapologetically curvy, sexy, and intensely feminine, her feelings about her post-baby body are a bit less enthusiastic.

PHOTOS: Olivia's stunning red carpet moments

After delivering Otis two weeks earlier than expected in April 2014, Wilde admitted she walked around feeling wounded.

First of all, you haven't seen your vagina in months, even though it's all her fault you're in this situation. Now that you can finally confirm that she is, in fact, still there, she isn't the gal you remember, the Tron actress candidly admitted. I [also] joined the ranks of millions of new mothers when I moaned, Why do I still look pregnant? Is there another one stuck in there?

PHOTOS: Jason and Olivia's romance

What helped kick her body back into shape? Breast-feeding helps, in the most intense way, Wilde said, adding way, way more details than expected. You feel your uterus contracting while the baby nurses. Your belly starts to go down. Your thighs become slightly less thunderous. Finally, you are ready to change out of sweatpants, but when you manage to button your jeansthe button clasp gets swallowed up and lost in your gelatinous Stay Puft Marshmallow Man belly. This is when it becomes abundantly clear that its time to reintroduce yourself to your jilted abdominals.

But getting back in the gym was no easy feat. It felt like leaving a karaoke bar to go take a physics exam, Wilde said of her first post-baby exercise class. If I wasnt at work, I just wanted to stay home and party with my little manand by party, I mean, of course, endless rounds of the Itsy Bitsy Spider. Also, I like beer. And pizza. And these two ingredients are not found in the purely fictional book I like to call How to Look Like You Never Made a Human: A Guide to Socially Acceptable Motherhood.

Honcho accused of using power to hire family to pay $12K fine

A former municipal hospital administrator spotlighted in The Post for using her position to help family members land jobs in the system has agreed to pay a $12,000 fine, the Conflicts of Interest Board announced Monday.

The Post disclosed on March 5 that Gloria Velez was forced to resign as a senior human-resources director in October 2014 after investigators found she had helped relatives get jobs at Health and Hospitals Corp.

Velez told The Post at the time that the charges were not true and she had nothing to hide.

But in her settlement, she admitted violating the citys ethics rules when it came to a daughter and her partner.

Velez said she arranged for her high-school-age daughter to be an unpaid intern in HHCs central office between June 2003 and August 2006 even though she wasnt screened or in any formalinternship program.

Instead, I directed my subordinates the associate director of human resources and a personnel/labor relations associate to supervise the work of my daughter during the internship, Velez said in the settlement.

Velez also conceded that her daughters domestic partner reported to her.

Glorias husband, George Velez Sr. and her children, George Velez Jr., Gina and Gianelle Velez.
