‘Almost Human’ Reveals 2nd Missing Episode in Week 8

Posted: at 10:43 pm

[This is a review forAlmost Humanseason 1, episode 8. It contains SPOILERS.]

Its the second episode made and the eighth to air, but Almost Human has finally started talking about Kennexs girlfriend Anna again, albeit briefly, in its final episode leading before a 3-week hiatus. Though Foxs new future series is on-point and a thoroughly enjoyable watch, itll be to each his own when the series returns February 10, as its still a bit difficult to get a sense of this series direction.

In this weeks missing episode, You Are Here, written by creator J.H. Wyman & former executive producer Naren Shankar, technology takes over and an assassin no mark could ever hide from is created. As Kennex and Dorian attempt to track down its source before more lives are taken, Maldonado looks deeper into the incident that cost Kennex his leg (not to mention his partner), revealing a much larger mystery that could ultimately take down the entire precinct.

Like last weeks episode (and most, really), Simon Says, this weeks is a fun and compelling looking into the future of technology and, in the case of You Are Here, assassinations, which are now able to be completed with bullets meant to track the location of their intended target, no matter where they are. Whats most impressive, though, is the fact that this is the second episode made and, barring a few out of context scenes, reveals the true strength of the series foundation.

More so, a few questions that fans have been looking for answers to like Kennex not making use of other synthetics while in the field or Richards general feelings toward the famed duo were legitimately addressed, proving that, though the series has been aired out of order (thanks to scheduling), an earnest intent was made to fully develop the series early-on in its existence.

Unfortunately, Almost Human has been muddied by shifting schedules and a second-helping of hiatus, and this episode (as well as others) no matter how thoroughly enjoyable never truly develop into anything more complex than its 8pm timeslot will allow which isnt much, but it sure is more than most.

This, in addition to the weak and generally sparse storyline involving Kennexs ex, or even Dorians desire for mortality to make sense, makes it difficult for much of the series hard-earned appeal to ingrain itself in the minds of those watching. The show is entertaining, and the cast is honestly too good for network television; however, outside of a few truly brilliant moments, theres still no reason to care about whats going on and network television isnt superficial enough to survive on potential alone, no matter who is in the cast.

‘Being Human’ Season 4 Premiere Review

Posted: at 10:43 pm

[This is a review of the Being Humanseason 4 premiere. There will be SPOILERS.]

-

Being Humans fourth season premiere (Old Dogs, New Tricks) picks-up three months after the events of the season 3 finale (despite the nine month real-time gap between episodes) with Aidan (Sam Witwer) and Nora (Kristen Hager) running through the woods from a wolfed out Josh (Sam Huntington) while Sally (Meaghan Rath) is trapped in some kind of purgatory spa. The two sequences are far from the dreary Boston apartment and the shows other familiar locales, but while the surroundings are a bit different, the episode doesnt take long to snip some of last seasons remaining plot threads while pulling out a few new ones.

Firstly, Josh is still a wolf following last seasons cliffhanger. Essentially, his human to werewolf ratio flipped 180 degrees to where he only turns human one night a month which just so happens to be the night that Nora turns into a wolf. Theres a weird romantic poetry to the ships-passing-in-the-night status of their relationship and unbound passion at play when they finally see each other after those separately torturous days, but we can see Joshs underlying pain seeping out. The reunion is bittersweet, brief, and if Josh has his way, a goodbye.

Slipping in and out of his human consciousness while spending his wolf time alternately in a barn stall and in the forest where he chases his friends for exercise, Josh knows that Aidan and Nora feel duty-bound to tend to him in his wolf state, but he is desperate to free them from that burden and asks Aidan to kill him. A request that is rejected and pushed aside by Aidan and Josh with too much ease a disappointing trend that is also at play when it comes time to resolve Sallys situation.

Held by Donna who may not be as cut-and-dry evil as we thought in season 3 Sallys escape from her holding cellis predictable, too easy (theres the trend), and one of the coolest visuals in the episode as it switches between the sight of Sally swinging from a rope in a big box retailer and an olde Massachusetts witch trial.

Her escape and return to the group may also signal doom and a more ambitious footprint for the show if Donnas warnings about Sallys powers and her presence in the realm of the living prove to be true. But Donnas exit feels entirely too quick and her intentions far too noble following her arc from last season. Will she return as the season delves into realm of witchcraft and the reason for Sallys spiritual durability?

Steve Books: Defense spending needs to be scrutinized

Posted: at 3:44 pm

Dear Editor: Thanks for continuing to post the "Human Cost of War" statistics in the Cap Times to hopefully bring continued awareness about the war. The war in Afghanistan is going on 13 years now and this year is supposed to be the last. The entire area around Afghanistan will continue to be contentious for years, as will Iraq and insurgents continuing to wreak havoc there.

The question about the financial cost of war really gets interesting when reading about The Commonwealth Fund reporting a flow of $11 billion in federal defense contracts to Wisconsin. Yes, jobs will be created to ensure the production of ships, trucks and ammunition in Wisconsin. But it is a lost economy in the end making the products of war drains federal funds.

The rejection of Medicaid money and high-speed rail funds by Gov. Scott Walker suggests he should be given a "reverse golden fleece award" for rejecting federal funds that would surely be a positive incentive for Wisconsinites. Yet the governor accepts funds for his transportation company buddies to build some questionable roads without fixing and maintaining our current ones.

This $11 billion in defense contracts needs to be scrutinized. I'm very concerned about.

Midstate activists raise awareness of law to help sex traffic victims

Posted: January 11, 2014 at 1:41 pm

Mayor Robert Reichert is scheduled to sign a proclamation Saturday that designates the day as Human Trafficking Awareness Day in Macon-Bibb County.

After the proclamation signing at the Government Center on Poplar Street, volunteers with the Middle Georgia Alliance to End Regional Trafficking and the Crisis Line & Safe House of Central Georgia will distribute notices to area businesses informing them of a recently passed state law meant to help human trafficking victims.

Human trafficking involves the use of force or fraud to keep someone against their will for their labor, services or commercial sex acts.

Anyone induced into performing commercial sex acts as a minor also is a victim of trafficking.

Georgia House Bill 141, signed into law last May, requires certain businesses to post notices alerting people to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline. Under the law, businesses that fail to post the notice after being asked to comply are subject to a misdemeanor criminal charge and a fine of $500.

Businesses must display the hotline information in public restrooms and at least one other conspicuous location.

Adult entertainment establishments, bars, airports, bus and train stations, hospitals, hotels and businesses that offer massage services but do not employ massage therapists are all subject to the law.

Dozens of massage parlors operated in Macon in the last decade, which law enforcement agencies often targeted in anti-prostitution efforts. Activists against human trafficking suggested some women at those places were being held against their will.

In 2010, the Macon City Council passed an ordinance that made it harder for massage parlors to operate, and as a result there are fewer of them today, but that doesnt mean human trafficking in the area has stopped.

The model for trafficking in Middle Georgia has shifted from one involving primarily massage parlors to one involving Internet-based trafficking where the orders are placed online, and the victims are trafficked at local hotels, said District Attorney David Cooke.

Human trafficking event targets men

Posted: at 1:41 pm

Several hundred people crowded into the Statehouse atrium Thursday for the fifth annual event on Ohios role in human trafficking, but the number of men were islands in a sea of women.

Still, Rep. Teresa Fedor (D., Toledo) was encouraged by the fact that there were more than last year.

Theyre part of the solution, she said. We know that the average age of someone first buying commercial sex is 23. We know that the average age of someone whos really into using is middle-aged. In order to really curb this crime, we really have to have the demand decreased. It just cant be done through law.

House Bill 130, sponsored by Ms. Fedor, passed the Ohio House in June and is expected to get its first hearing next week in the Senate. Among other things, it would toughen penalties for johns who pay for sex with minors, regardless of whether they knew they were underage.

We need to stir men up, said Nick Lembo, a pastor and board member of the Defenders USA, a Washington state-based organization that has rallied at truck stops and plans to picket at the 2015 Super Bowl in Phoenix to educate men to the fact that they are the primary fuel of this fire.

We are systemic to the issue, but we are also systemic to the answer, he said.

Defenders USA noted that johns arrested for soliciting minors often plea-bargain their cases down to minor offenses, serve little or no jail time, and are not required to register as sex offenders.

You can have the best laws in the world against trafficking, but if its only a law on the shelf, it isnt going to do much, said Vern Smith, the Defenders USA founder.

The conference coincided with the unveiling of a new public awareness program by Gov. John Kasichs administration to alert Ohioans that modern-day slavery is occurring in their midst. A poster, mandated under a 2012 law, features a close-up of a young girls face, one that has appeared on other states posters, and the words Sold for SexMake it Stop.

It will appear on billboards, toll booths, and buses and in turnpike service plazas, libraries, soup kitchens, and media.

It’s time to stop buying the New York Post

Posted: at 3:40 pm

I used to be a daily buyer of the New York Post, the daily paper known for a sense of venality and trashy fun. I was working at the time for a weekly newspaper and reading the daily slate of celebrity gossip, and the Post, though it didnt provide ideas per se, dosed me with a jolt of energy I couldnt have gotten from coffee. The Op-Eds, by folks like Rich Lowry and John Bolton, had always been negligible to my reading of it; the gossip was and remains enticing. But what was most intriguing were always the slice-of-life stories that would have been, at most, small squibs in the metro section of the nationally minded New York Times. Exemplary is the cover that ran the day after New York state legalized gay marriage it depicted, instead of the earth-shaking news, a picture of a woman saved from jumping off a building by hero cops. (The little joke here the biggest news of the day, unremarked upon, hung over this womans suicide attempt didnt go unnoticed, but seemed funny and not deeply weird.) Little Upworthy-style stories of human triumphs or, more commonly, dark stories of misdeeds and ill fortune and small-scale political graft reminded me that I lived in a big and porous city, full of events entirely opaque to me but for the 30 minutes a day spent reading the paper.

I stopped buying the Post after it refused to back down from its Bag Men cover and havent looked back. It wasnt so much that I was protesting the newspaper, or boycotting it; it just didnt, and still doesnt, feel right to get news from a source with such a semantic sense of true and false. As readers will recall, the newspaper printed a cover strongly implying that two young men were involved in the bombing of the Boston Marathon, complete with the headline referencing backpacks and a slang term for criminals and a photo of the men. It then refused to walk its story back, claiming that The image was emailed to law enforcement agencies yesterday afternoon seeking information about these men without noting just how many photos of other people, not of Middle Eastern descent, might have been in similar photos.

The hits kept coming among them the Posts horrifying treatment of a dead Brooklyn landlord, whose death the paper didnt so much report as revel in with display copy asking WHO DIDNT WANT HIM DEAD?The Post refused to walk that back, either claiming, The Post does not say Mr. Stark deserved to die, but our reporting showed that he had many enemies, which may have led to the commission of this terrible crime. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time of loss. If thats how the Post shows its thoughtful, spiritual side, one would hate to see it actually expressing vitriol.

One sees that side the venal, indefensible side once again in the papers coverage of Eliot Spitzer and Lis Smith. This doesnt have the import of life or death or terrorism, which is just the point. The coverage has consistently treated the relationship between a man going through a divorce and an adult woman acting of her own free will as not just politically interesting (hes the former governor who ran for municipal office in New York last year and lost; she worked for his campaign) but somehow morally revolting. They published a story about his sucking her toes on a vacation; the pair were compelled to respond with receipts disproving the story. The tone of the Posts incessant coverage has, throughout, been slut-shaming in the extreme with Smith framed as an ambitious, youngish cookie [...] us[ing] a married degenerate.

The whole thing isnt out of character for the Post; its the way the Post has been all along. But where before the Posts serious misdeeds first framing two young Middle Eastern men as terrorists in precisely such a way as to sell papers but to avoid ever having to retract, then yukking it up over murder the tone of the Post no longer seems enervating and different but like a foreign country I know I never again want to visit. The ideology of other properties of Rupert Murdoch define them as politically conservative in a manner that is at least useful in clarifying the stakes in the national debate Fox News and the Wall Street Journal editorial page, like it or not, do set the agenda. The New York Posts agenda is just anger, in every direction, all the time. Its like reading an Internet comment section. There are other places to find interesting stories, places that are guided by virtues other than indulging their pure rage and appealing to yours.
