Its summer school that can make a huge difference on young minds for years to come.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba announced the formation of a two-week class that will provide training opportunities and education basics for teachers this summer.

The class, the first partnership between the CMHR and post-secondary education facility, is called "The Fourth R: Teaching and Leadership for Human Rights Education." Its expected to give current and student teachers guidelines, knowledge and skills in the area of human rights, a subject that is becoming increasingly prominent in all school curriculum areas.

"The purpose of this summer institute is to ensure human rights take a central place in education -- not just as something we teach about, but also as something that informs how we teach," offered Dr. David Mandzuk, Dean of Education, in a statement Friday. "It will also help educators think deeply and critically about how they represent human rights stories, which can be told from multiple perspectives."

The formation of the program comes on the heels of a CMHR-Canadian Teachers Federation study last year, which found that 94 per cent of instructors were interested in acquiring more school and age-appropriate information about human rights.

"One of the best ways to educate students about human rights and responsibilities is to teach the teachers," said Stuart Murray, CMHR president and CEO. "That's why we're already beginning to address gaps in human rights education through strong partnerships that will better equip educators at all levels."

The English-only program runs from July 16-29 and is available to all teachers and student teachers. Contact the University of Manitobas Faculty of Education for more details.

Canadas newest national museum is expected to swing its doors open to the public later this year (Sept. 20).

MANILA, Philippines The field of contenders for the position of United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous People was extremely strong, according to Human Rights Council (HRC) president Baudelaire Ndong Ella, but in the end the nominee from the Philippines prevailed.

Vicky Tauli-Corpuz, a proud Igorot from the Kankana-ey tribe in Besao, Mountain Province, will be the first woman and indigenous person from the Philippines to assume the position previously held by men.

Vicky is a very experienced advocate at the United Nations level and establishes a welcome commitment to gender equity in this important post for indigenous peoples of the world, Ella said when he announced Corpuzs selection on March 3.

Corpuz helped push for the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007 while she was the chairperson of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), also the first Filipina to assume the post.

As a special rapporteur, Corpuz will report on the human rights situations of various indigenous peoples (IP) around the world, address violations of their rights through communications with governments, and promote good practices on indigenous rights protection.

Created by the UN Commission on Human Rights in 1991, the position was renewed by the HRC in 2007.

Corpuz said she did not expect to be chosen among the 14 nominees, most of whom obtained Masters and PhD degrees. Corpuz graduated from the Philippine Science High School in Quezon City in 1969 and finished her nursing degree at the University of the Philippines Manila in 1976.

Bill Human dies; helped create modern Clayton

Posted: March 12, 2014 at 9:40 pm

Heres how Bill Human went from a young lieutenant aboard a Navy destroyer to become mayor of Clayton:

Mr. Human returned from the Navy in 1952 after serving during the Korean War. His father was an alderman in Clayton, who stepped aside so his son could take his place. The father owned the old Human Brothers Hardware Store in downtown Clayton.

The younger Human took his fathers seat but not for long. He resigned to become Claytons city attorney. Soon after, city officials asked him to take another post, heading the charter commission that came up with a new form of government for Clayton.

In 1959, he was chosen as the citys first mayor under the new charter.

He proudly recalled a meeting with Claytons restaurant owners during the early 1960s, when many St. Louis-area businesses remained segregated. He said he persuaded the owners to open their establishments to black patrons. That earned him a commendation from the American Civil Liberties Union.

Mr. Human died Sunday (March 9, 2014) at the Mari de Villa nursing home in Town and Country. He was 90 and had been diagnosed with liver cancer about three years ago, his family said Tuesday.

Mr. Human gave up elective office after serving two terms as Claytons mayor, from 1959-1963. He continued to serve the public in many appointed civic positions.

In Clayton, he helped set up a strong city-manager form of government. The mayor and Board of Aldermen appoint a professional manager, who in turn appoints the police and fire chiefs and other employees. The idea was to reduce political influence.

Mr. Human later adopted a similar model as chairman of the St. Louis County Charter Commission, which drafted the countys first charter. That document created an elective county executive, prosecuting attorney and County Council far fewer elected officials than in the city of St. Louis.

Mr. Human also was a member of the committee that helped create the charter for the Zoo-Museum District. He was the general counsel and helped create the St. Louis Science Center and what is now the St. Louis Regional Chamber.

Experts voice concern over rights violations, killings in Balochistan at UNHRC meet

By Ravi Khandelwal, Geneva (Switzerland), Mar.12 : Human rights activists, political leaders, Baloch nationalists and students from various parts of the world gathered in Geneva on March 10 to raise the issue of human rights violations in Pakistan's province of Balochistan.

The event titled "Human Rights, Regional Security and Perspectives for Balochistan and Pakistan Post-2014" was held at Palace of Nations, Geneva on the sidelines of the 110th session of the United Nations Human Rights Committee.

The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) together with the United Towns Agency for North-South Corporation and Baluchistan House organizes the event.

The speakers highlighted the worsening human rights situation, especially the issue of missing persons in the province.

"There is an ongoing military operation in Balochistan. It has intensified in the last few months. In the last week alone, over 100 young Bugtis were killed in Dera Bugti area alone. And now we are requesting the international community to halt or to pressurise Pakistan to halt all military operations in Balochistan because operations are happening across Balochistan," said Balochistan's representative to the UN, Mehran Marri Baloch.

In January 2014, mass graves were discovered in the district of Khuzdar, Balochistan, current day Pakistan.

Numerous bodies of Baloch individuals were discovered, although most remain unidentified and the families of the disappeared still live in uncertainty about the faith of their beloved ones.

"There is a serious case of mass genocide taking place in Balochistan. Even in the American Congress it was raised last month that mass graves were found in the area of Khuzdar called Tutak where 167 previously abducted or disappeared Balochs mutilated, decomposed bodies were found. This is crimes against humanity and Pakistan should be held accountable for these crimes it is committing against Baloch nation," added Mehran Baloch.

T.Kumar, International Advocacy Director, Amnesty USA, said: "For the world body, international human rights organizations and the U.N., it is a challenge, how to bring attention that is being paid in Pakistan for war on terror to also focus on the people of Pakistan, namely the Balochistan. The conference gives special attention to Balochistan, which is covering parts of Iran, Afghanistan and is currently Pakistan's largest and most resource-rich province."

Organization pushes to get human trafficking in the open

Posted: at 9:40 pm

The Rev. Angel Arroyo speaks during a Tuesday panel discussion on human trafficking at LorainCountyCommunityCollege. ANNA MERRIMAN/CHRONICLE

ELYRIA Its often considered a taboo topic, but on Tuesday a panel of specialists spoke openly about human trafficking a problem which they say will become more frequent than drug trafficking in a matter of years.

Human trafficking often gets ignored or misunderstood, said Mindi Kuebler of the Human Trafficking Collaborative of Lorain County.

We make sure that people know about it, that theyre not afraid to talk about it, Kuebler said.

The collaborative, which Kuebler runs with Kristi Miller and Shawn Cleveland, aims to bring awareness to the problem and to assist human trafficking victims, who often have no other means of support, Kuebler said.

At the talk at Lorain County Community College on Tuesday, Kuebler, Miller, Cleveland and panelists Michelle Gillcrist of the Ohio attorney generals office, Director of Lorain County Urban League Mike Ferrer and the Rev. Angel Arroyo explained the ways a person gets coerced into prostitution or human trafficking often through friends.

They explained how it is difficult for victims of human trafficking, who are often in their early teens, to break out of the cycle.

Its just like with an addiction they can get help only when they want it, Miller said.

While some awareness has been raised in the four years that the collaborative has been active, speakers on Tuesday said they would like more people to understand the situation in Lorain County.

There has never been the opportunity that there is right now, Ferrer said, addressing the awareness that the Ariel Castro kidnappings in Cleveland brought to the issues of human trafficking and sexual assault.

Being Human: Too Far, Fast Forward!

Posted: March 11, 2014 at 5:40 pm

[This is a review ofBeing HumanSeason 4 Episode 9. There will be SPOILERS.]

-

Whereas last weeks episode ofBeing Human,Rewind, Rewind, almost felt like a new beginning for the series as it heads for its end, this weeks episode felt very aware of Being Humans mortality, pivoting off of last weeks cliffhanger with predictability and a sprint back toward the shows prime timeline comfort zone.

Inevitable? Probably, but in doing this so quickly, the writers shorthand Aidans emotional arc from vengeance monster to Bishops duplicitous house pet to penitent man following a convenient epiphany, robbing both the character and this episode of virtue and value.

Speaking of Bishop, last night was most likely a series wrap for Mark Pelligrinos wonderfully evil father-figure/blood monster and he parted with a mix of bombast and grace. Pellegrino is one of those actors that seem to pop up everywhere, but he really had a chance to put down roots with Being Human and he shined as a well-drawn character; particularly in later seasons after the characters death, when he appeared as a dominant figure in Aidans past -someone who represented Aidans debauched old ways, and an ideal to push back against.

Its symbolic that Bishops finest moment from last nights episode (though, his death-bed speech about Aidans move away from all the light in his life to become, essentially, the King of everything and nothing, was well-played and affecting) came in, presumably, the same warehouse where he died in season 1. This time, Bishop is devil-shouldering Aidan into killing Ray and Josh, with Aidan ultimately phasing through Josh (he can do that?) to jam Rays eyes out and toss him off the catwalk. An act that, once again, reveals Aidans monstrous capacity to Sally while also showing the ease with which Bishop can steer Aidan off a cliff.

One thing that Bishop couldnt push Aidan to do was kill Josh. Instead, Aidan put guilt on his shoulders and assigned him to a fate far worse for his role in Sallys death: life as a beanie wearing pie maker with the ghost of Sally trying to play matchmaker for Josh and his customers.

An Aiden-centric episode, Joshs arc does prove valuable as he is used to facilitate Sallys search for Alana (the medium that introduced her to Donna) and eventually Donna. Joshs blood also proves useful when the vampire virus rears its head, saving Aidan and equipping him with the tools needed to rebel against Bishop out of envy, not out of conscience.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights says the facility has expectations of guest bloggers' content.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is weathering a censorship allegation after deleting a blog post it commissioned from a Tyrell Historical Medal-winning Canadian historian.

To coincide with International Women's Day, the Winnipeg-based museum asked Veronica Strong-Boag, a historian specializing in the history of women and children in Canada, to pen a blog post in her area of expertise.

The post appeared on March 4, but was removed hours later after museum staff deemed a passage criticizing the federal Conservative government unacceptable.

The passage in question described the Conservatives as having an "anti-woman record." She said museum staff first asked her to back up that claim, but ultimately rejected a footnoted posting as a partisan statement.

In a letter to Strong-Boag, museum communications director Angela Cassie apologized for failing to explain what was expected from blog-post authors.
