MANILA, Philippines The government official tasked to uphold human rights is a victim of human rights violations herself, and on Tuesday, March 18 nearly 3 decades after the Marcos regime ended she finally received a compensation for her ordeal.

Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chair Loretta Ann Rosales personally received a check worth P50,000 as one of the 9,539 human rights victims during the Martial Law who won a private class suit against former President Ferdinand Marcos in Hawaii.

Rosales an activist and a human rights advocate was raped and tortured by the military during the Marcos regime, according to a report from the South China Morning Post a portion of which was republished by its author Raissa Robles in her website.

The compensation recognizes the sacrifices of the Martial Law heroes and martyrs who had given their lives to attain democracy and freedom, Martial Law Files Project of the Commission on Human Rights (MLFP-CHR) Manager Myrna Jimenez said in a statement.

Aside from Rosales, claimants all over the country have been receiving checks worth P50,000 since January 21, 2014.

On February 7, at least 170 human rights victims received their compensation in Cagayan de Oro City. (READ: Martial Law victims in Northern Mindanao receive compensation)

The amount awarded to each claimant was sourced from the proceeds of the sale of an 1899 painting by French artist Claude Monet previously owned by Imelda Marcos. The painting was sold for $10,000.

Checks to be issued until March 21

Sri Lankan government amplifies its dirty tactics during UN session

Posted: at 9:40 am

The Sri Lankan governments ongoing dirty tactics to silence and smear dissidents are a brazen attempt to deflect criticism as the country faces fresh scrutiny at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Amnesty International said today.

The Council is due to vote next week on a resolution calling for an international investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sri Lanka during the protracted and bloody internal armed conflict with the LTTE (Tamil Tigers). Since the end of the conflict in May 2009, the government under President Mahinda Rajapaksa has pursued a crackdown on its critics.

Sri Lanka must put an end to the campaign of intimidation and dirty tactics against outspoken human rights defenders, journalists, lawyers and families of the disappeared, said Peter Splinter, Amnesty International Representative to the United Nations in Geneva.

The hasty release of two prominent human rights activists yesterday after their detention on 16 March is a welcome development, the organization said. But behind their case are a number of other peaceful activists who have been detained in recent months in a bid to stamp out dissent.

While its positive that the human rights defenders Ruki Fernando and Father Praveen Mahesan have been released, the world must not be fooled. The fact remains they should never have been arrested in the first place. The Sri Lankan authorities must stop repressing critical voices and ensure the safety of all those who peacefully express inconvenient truths about the countrys post-war human rights situation, said Peter Splinter.

Foul smells keep post office closed

Posted: at 9:40 am

March 19, 2014 Updated Mar 20, 2014 at 4:18 AM EDT

Richford, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Town of Richford's post office has been closed since October 2013 when customers say they could smell urine and human feces from the tenant next door.

Post Office officials said the landlord has been neglectful and needs to fix the problems with the tenant next door before the building can be reopened.

The Richford post office shares its building with a residential tenant.

The Post Office said the landlord, Pete McLaren, hasn't rectified the situation since its employees left.

Sharon Mertz, a customer, said she could smell urine and feces when she picked up her mail.

"When I would go into the post office, there was definitely a very strong odor, very strong," Mertz said.

Mertz does not always have access to a car when her husband is out of town on business making it impossible to pick up her mail from the office in Berkshire every day.

Something she says is important to do for her husband's job.

"I pick up our personal mail, I pick up our daughter and son in law's mail," Mertz said. "And if he's on the road, we can't get it for one or two days. With his business, he needs to be able to get his mail."

Being Human: Oh Dont You Die For Me

Posted: March 18, 2014 at 9:40 pm

[This is a review ofBeing HumanSeason 4 Episode 10. There will be SPOILERS.]

-

AsBeing Humans time winds down, its natural to think that the four-year-old show will do everything to make the most of these last few episodes, but following the initially bold and then woefully short-lived trek to the alternate timeline, fans of the show received little more than an episode that stood in place, occasionally shuffling its feet before a burst of action at the very end.

Speaking of standing in place, its easy to look at both Aidan and Josh and forget that while weve seen them sprint through an entire contrary existence, these versions of the characters have done little since we left them behind in issue 7, Gallows Humor.

Following his evening of truth-telling, crying, and captivity, Aidan and Suzanna are right back into their conflict and she wants to put a stop to Kenny, the self-made vampire-boy-King of Boston. Holding strong, paternal feelings for the boy that he sired, Aidan asks for and is given a two month stay to reform Kenny.

As for Josh, hes coming to terms with Noras rejection of him (and his wolf) with uncommon briskness; further surprising us when the healing process takes him back to Marks pack. Josh feels accepted there, he can be the alpha, but when the group gathers in a house before the monthly turn, their true plan is revealed: Mark and company want to bring wannabe wolves to Josh so that he will turn them, thus growing the wolf pack and an army for the supposedly pending war between werewolves and vampires. Naturally, Josh rejects this idea, only to get thrown into a small cage, something that Nora and Aidan find out about thanks to Astrid, Kennys werewolf girlfriend.

Prior to the rescue mission, the pace of Oh Dont You Die For Me can be described as glacial. Once Aidan rolls up to the wolf den/lovely cottage, things begin to get a bit more exciting as he frees Josh from his cell before telling Nora to get him far away. The odds against him, Aidan then takes on the entire pack, holding his own for a moment before the wolves overtake him. Refusing to flee, Sally starts possessing the wolves one by one to even up the odds, even though doing so drains her. The wolves dealt with, she lingers in one of the wolves in an effort to make Aidan remember their affair from the alternate timeline.

Were also going to see Sally transported back to the room where Lil Smokie was sacrificed earlier in the season (we keep forgetting about that lingering plot thread); however, the trailer for next week indicates that Aidan is going to rip right through the wall to discover some kind of hidden room, so were not giving into some kind of panic or worry that Sally, in her weakened state, transported back in time again.

Dudamel, Gergiev: Should they leave politics to the experts?

Posted: at 9:40 pm

Though I typically love Washington Post music critic Anne Midgettes reasoning and writing, her March 14 column on whether classical musicians should take political stands forcefully argued and written is deeply disturbing from the first sentence.

Midgette thoughtfully examines the public roles of musicians, asking if they have a duty to speak up for human rights, particularly when the countries that nurtured them are in significant turmoil. For Los Angeles Philharmonic music director Gustavo Dudamel, its the uprising against the current regime in Venezuela. With conductor Valery Gergiev, its Russia.

Her piece begins as follows:

Theres a myth, in the popular imagination, that classical music is higher, better and more exalted than much of the rest of life.

Myth?

Having lived and worked in Washington, D.C., I know that those who champion the fine arts there are always under the shadow of the anti-elitism police we all know we they are and thus tend to head them off at the pass, so to speak, with self-deprecating lip service.

If the value of classical music is a myth, why do we fund it with ticket sales, foundation grants and, most of all, with our hearts despite its flagrant lack of practicality? Broadway shows can barely muster much semblance of a pit orchestra. But Mahler symphonies, say, are played by a group of 100 or more. Surely, there must be some justification for that. And there is. It is higher, better and more exalted than much of the rest of life. If thats not true, then many intelligent people have been utter fools for a very long time.

The argument over whether classical music makes us better human beings is the way of madness.Even the greatest people, whether involved with music or not, have feet of clay. Its our nature. And who is anybody to chart another human beings self-improvement at the hands of any artform?

As for the musicians themselves, Midgette tends to discuss them collectively, even though they occupy hugely different places on the chess board.

Those who create art are most notable for their inner lives, which intersect with their outer selves but exist in a distinctly different place. One has to hunt far and deeply to find expression of Wagners bigotry in his music, mainly in the finale of Die Meistersinger (when Hans Sachs warns against outside influences polluting their art) and the implications of ethnic cleansing under the surface of Parsifal. I believe that Wagners bigotry wouldnt be nearly the issue that it is now had his music not been co-opted by Nazi Germany. And thats not his fault though he was rather foolish to throw his anti-Semitic opinions about in public to begin with. A composers primary responsibility is to his or her inner (and inevitably private) self.

Valid position… or partisan drivel? Your Opinion

When the Canadian Museum for Human Rights deleted a blog post it had commissioned because it didn't find the content acceptable, many of our readers made sure they tracked down and read that post. Here's what they thought.

I read the blog and the PDF referenced in the footnote. Basically, her point is the Harper government is "anti-women" because they scrapped Paul Martin's national daycare plan and replaced it with $100/month cheques. No wonder the article was rejected. It's nothing more than partisan drivel.

-- bek816

A human rights museum that lets itself become an organ of partisan commentary will not likely retain its government funding.

A human rights museum that restricts debate about rights so as to rule out criticism of the sitting government will not maintain intellectual credibility.

This is a tension inherent in the idea of a human rights museum. If the museum continues to resolve the tension by restricting content, it won't be respected.

-- Spence Furby

The truth hurts I guess. Ironically, her blog will get far more attention now.

Founder of Chinese Human Rights Website Arrested

Posted: March 15, 2014 at 4:40 am

Police have detained the founder of a human rights website and at least four writers after the site reported on a self-immolation in Beijings Tiananmen Square and a defacement of Maos portrait there.

Amnesty International reported that Huang Qi, the founder of the human rights website 64 Tianwang, was detained in Chengdu after a raid by 11 police officers Thursday afternoon. Police confiscated computers, mobile phones, and USB sticks, Amnesty said.

There now appears to be a concerted campaign of intimidation by the Chinese authorities against those associated with the 64 Tianwang website. Once again the authorities have shown their intent to stifle debate on human rights within China, said William Nee, China researcher at Amnesty International.

These are spurious charges against Huang Qi and others detained solely for their work for 64 Tianwang. They must be immediately released, Nee said.

Last weekend three volunteer journalists who had reported on the sensitive issues of the self-immolation and the Mao defacement for 64 Tianwang website were taken away and detained by the police.

Two of the journalists quoted witnesses to the Tiananmen Square self-immolation in interviews with foreign media, and photos of the smoke from the incident were published by the 64 Tianwang website.

The citizen journalists, Liu Xuehong, Xing Jian, and Wang Jing, were detained during a series of raids on charges of picking quarrels and provoking trouble, Amnesty said.

The website, 64 Tianwang, which was founded in order to report on missing persons, has expanded to report human rights news for Chinese readers, covering protests, petitioners, and other rights issues. The website is still operational, but has not been updated since March 11.

In another incident in the ongoing crackdown against activists and dissidents, activist Hu Jia reported on Twitter that former Masanjia labor camp detainee, Liu Hua, was taken from a friends home in Beijing by over 10 plainclothes agents from Liaoning Province, and transported to the Honglin police station in Shenyang City, Liaoning.

When the Epoch Times called the police station in Honglin just after midnight Thursday, a man named Liao, who answered the station phone, said he didnt know whether Liu Hua was there.

There are 2) bands with the name Posthuman:

1) Posthuman are cousins Richard Bevan and Joshu Doherty. Known mainly for multi-layered electronic music, with heavy emphasis on intricate drum programming. A signature to their sound is the extensive use of Roland 808 and 909 drum machines. Formed in 1999 in Manchester, England, they relocated to London in 2000.

The duo are also known for their own imprint, Seed Records, and for hosting a series of events in an abandoned tube station in London between 2001 and 2005, at which they and their label mates played alongside guest artists including Aphex Twin, Plaid, Luke Vibert, and many more.

Although the bulk of their releases fall within the idm genre, Posthuman have been known to widely experiment, their 2002 self-titled EP combined hip hop and heavy metal with electronica, and their 2006 album The Peoples Republic was heavily influenced by post-rock. See http://www.posthumanmusic.com for more information.

Bevan and Doherty also record under various other aliases, including Walter Becomes Wendy, snapmouth, On / Off, and The House Husbands. Doherty is also a member of modern-classical meets electronica group Digitonal, and hardcore breaks outfit AGT Rave Cru

2) Posthuman is a modern melodic death metal band from Groningen, the Netherlands.

At the end of 2007, in the North of the Netherlands, five men decided to become more than just another metal band. They decided to become Posthuman. Within a few months, they assembled an innovative mix of power and melody by combining traditional metal instruments with synthesizer sounds. These haunting tunes backed by ruthless force guide the listener into a world beyond the visible, beyond the obvious.

Museum offers teachers summer course in human-rights education

Posted: at 4:40 am

Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION

Posted: 03/15/2014 1:00 AM | Comments:

IT'S a summer school that can make a huge difference on young minds for years to come.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the faculty of education at the University of Manitoba announced on Friday the formation of a two-week class that will provide training opportunities and education basics for teachers this summer.

The class, the first partnership between the CMHR and the post-secondary education facility, is called The Fourth R: Teaching and Leadership for Human Rights Education. It's expected to give current and student teachers guidelines, knowledge and skills in the area of human rights, a subject that is becoming increasingly prominent in all school curriculum areas.

"The purpose of this summer institute is to ensure human rights take a central place in education -- not just as something we teach about, but also as something that informs how we teach," offered David Mandzuk, dean of education, in a statement Friday. "It will also help educators think deeply and critically about how they represent human-rights stories, which can be told from multiple perspectives."

The formation of the program comes on the heels of a CMHR-Canadian Teacher's Federation study last year, which found that 94 per cent of instructors were interested in acquiring more school and age-appropriate information about human rights.

"One of the best ways to educate students about human rights and responsibilities is to teach the teachers," said Stuart Murray, CMHR president and CEO. "That's why we're already beginning to address gaps in human-rights education through strong partnerships that will better equip educators at all levels."

The institute is the brainchild of education faculty members Jerome Cranston and Melanie Janzen, along with input from CMHR Learning and Programming specialists. The CMHR and Extended Education provided funding for program co-ordination.

The English-only program runs from July 16-29 and is available to all teachers and student teachers.
