April 27, 2014

Obama faces a delicate balancing act during his Malaysia visit, the first by a sitting US president since 1966. Reuters pic, April 27, 2014.The deep fissures in Malaysias political system are forcing President Barack Obama to spell out the least-defined aspect of his Asia outreach strategy how much Washington will use its renewed focus on the region to press for democratic reforms and human rights, the Washington Post said today.

The US daily said Obama must balance his praise for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak with recognising that Putrajaya has been stifling dissent and limiting press freedom at home.

The Post also quoted former Bar Council chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan as saying that praising Malaysia's democracy would undermine the struggle for human rights.

"What do we want from the president? To see Malaysia for what it is. If they are glowing about our democracy and moderation, they are undermining the work that we do and encouraging them to carry on with this oppressive conduct," she said.

Ambiga and nine other civil society representatives will meet Obama today to talk about issues affecting Malaysia, from religious persecution to electoral transparency.

The daily quoted US national security adviser Ben Rhodes as citing US concerns "at times" over restrictions on civil society.

"Hell have an opportunity to not just speak but also to hear from some of these individual leaders," he said in briefing to reporters aboard Air Force One, which carried the US president.

Rhodes said that by the end of Obama's visit, Washington's stand on Malaysia's human rights would be clear.

"I dont think there will be any question as to where he stands on those issues.

Post mortem evidence too 'graphic'

Posted: at 6:43 am

Video will begin in 5 seconds.

Oscar Pistorius gags and apparently throws up as he hears graphic descriptions of the post-mortem of his dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Oscar Pistorius repeatedly vomited, retched and sobbed through the sixth day of his murder trial as a forensic pathologist revealed the bullets the Olympian used to shoot his girlfriend were designed to cause maximum damage to human tissue.

Professor Gert Saayman, who conducted the autopsy on Ms Steenkamp, told the court the model died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, with three bullets striking her hip, upper arm and her head.

But while there is expected to be some dispute as to the order in which the bullets struck Ms Steenkamp, the professor said at least two of the three wounds could have proved fatal on their own.

Her right upper arm was shattered, the hip wound could likely have killed her very quickly and the head wound would have incapacitated her immediately, he said.

A lack of blood in her airways indicated Ms Steenkamp had probably only taken a few breaths before she succumbed to the head wound, the pathologist said.

Pistorius loudly retched and his body appeared to shake as Professor Saayman clinically described how a bullet entered Steenkamps head, fragmenting and exiting her skull in two places.

Azerbaijan human rights situation urgent

Posted: April 24, 2014 at 5:41 pm

The state of human rights in Azerbaijan requires urgent attention, the commissioner of a European watchdog organization said Wednesday.

Nils Muinieks, Commissioner for Human Rights at the 47-nation Council of Europe, said in a press release Wednesday that no progress had been made to curtail human rights abuses since the COE reported on them in August.

In particular, Muinieks highlighted government crackdowns on freedom of expression, citing [u]njustified and selective criminal prosecution of people expressing dissenting views, including journalists, bloggers and activists.

This is unacceptable, the Commissioner said.

The release likewise charged the governing New Azerbaijan Party, headed by President Ilham Aliyev, with restricting freedom of association and assembly, and violating property rights, accusations the Azeri government denies.

There are no problems with human rights in Azerbaijan, said New Azerbaijan Party deputy executive secretary Mubariz Gurbanly. Those who talk about human rights violations in our country are biased and try to blacken Azerbaijans image.

Human Barbie's no make-up selfie

Posted: at 5:41 pm

Ukranian model Valeria Lukyanova, aka Human Barbie, uploads a no make-up selfie, and the video diary of the spa treatments that prepped her for it

Barbie, human or otherwise, is rarely seen without her make-up. Valeria Lukyanova, aka Human Barbie, uploading a photo of herself sans coloured lenses, bubble-gum blush, doll lashes and saccharine sweet lip colour was something we didn't expect to see, until now.

IN PICTURES - Celebrity 'no make-up selfies'

For her latest selfie - of which there are many - the 28-year-old Ukranian model (who lives off a diet of cosmic micro-food for the record) has stripped back her plastic fantastic appeal and joined the no make-up selfie movement.

Her fans, while enthused by the photo - "so much more beautiful WITHOUT MAKE UP!" they echoed on Lukyanova's Facebook page - might however want to look at the post that followed. A video diary live from the spa - where it seems Human Barbie has spent a lot of time, and money, perfecting and manipulating her 'natural' look.

It's not just her vital stats and eye colour that Lukyanova has altered, it's also her eyebrows and colour, her skin (which she likes to look toned and 'Nordic') and we might add, her lifestyle, as exhibited by this short, but exhausting, film shot on spa location.

Job fair provides local teens with job search, interview skills

Posted: at 5:41 pm

Teenagers who live on post and in the local community spoke with Human Resources managers and assistants at Fort Belvoir during the Army Community Service Employment Readiness Programs Teen Job Fair, April 16 at the ACS building.

Human Resource representatives from the Fort Belvoir Credit Union, Post Exchange and the Nonappropriated Funds office spoke to the teens during a panel discussion about the importance of dressing properly for an interview, having questions prepared for the interviewer and appropriate comments to make during and after an interview.

The panelists also wanted the teens to feel comfortable when applying for jobs, too, according to Juanita Ray, Fort Belvoir Nonappropriated Funds Human Resources specialist.

I wanted to make sure they are aware they have to get used to applying for jobs online, said Ray. A lot of jobs are announced on USAJOBS, but the system is cumbersome, so I think some teens are afraid of using the website.

Teens left the fair more confident and informed about preparing and going through an interview, plus applying for jobs, according to Signe McDonald, 16, who attends Hayfield High School.

The way you present yourself during an interview, said McDonald, The fact all that stuff is taken into consideration is definitely the most useful information we heard today.

Her interest in working at the Fort Belvoir Exchange this summer is why she attended the fair, said McDonald. Along with interview skills, McDonald feels like the advice each panel member gave for how to apply for a job is useful.

You have to read the entire job description so you arent surprised by something when you start the job, said McDonald, Whether its pay, benefits or something else.

One teen who attended the fair found the interview skills particularly helpful. Haleigh Altersitz, 14, Lewis Village resident, likes to sew and make dresses. Shes thinking of starting a business one day, so knowing how to conduct an interview will help her if she has to hire someone.

I know what to look for in an interview if I ever interview someone, said Altersitz.

Presentation, panel to discuss gender identity, finding common ground

Posted: April 22, 2014 at 9:43 am

Jakki Thompson Beyond the Binary presentation, Flint Hills Human Rights Project, The Face of Trans, Transgender billboard Apr 21, 2014

Recently, a billboard bringing awareness to the transgender community was put up off of state Route 177 South in Manhattan through The Face of Trans i am project sponsored by the Flint Hills Human Rights Project. In conjunction with the billboard, the Flint Hills Human Rights Project will sponsor a presentation, titled, Beyond the Binary, and panel discussion about gender identity Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. at the Manhattan Fire Department, 2000 Denison Ave.

Elle Boatman, the founder and executive director of The Face of Trans, will be speak about issues surrounding the trans community. The 45 minute presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with Boatman; Adam OBrien, the person on the billboard and senior in fine arts; Dorinda Lambert, director of Counseling Services and Dr. Diana Brightbill, physician at Medical Associates, 1133 College Heights Road.

I am an advocate for empathy, Boatman said. The presentation will put an emphasis on trying to get cisgender people (those whose sex matches how they physically present) who are not educated on trans issues to be able to relate to them.

At the March 31 unveiling of the billboard, the Flint Hills Human Rights Project expressed a desire to do an educational event to correspond with the billboard. Members of the group said they thought it would be best to have the projects founder explain the project, and explain trans issues and how all people can relate to those around them.

Boatman had been doing similar presentations to the one she will be presenting in Manhattan at Wichita State University (where she works). She will be giving a condensed version here.

The goal of the presentation is to not totally get people to understand what it is like to be trans, Boatman said. But, it is more about understanding the issues trans people have to go through.

These issues can be universal, Boatman said.

One of example of this is losing a family member. Most people can relate to that, Boatman said. Ive found its harder to hate someone that you can relate to.
