Iran: Journalist's Detention Extended – Washington Post Reporter Held 4 Months, but Not Charged
Posted: December 6, 2014 at 4:40 am
Source: Human Rights Watch
(Beirut) - Irans judiciary has extended Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaians pretrial detention for another two months. Rezaian, a dual Iranian and American national, is being held in a section of Evin prison controlled by Irans Revolutionary Guards. He has been in detention for more than four months without being formally charged with any crime.
Jason Rezaian with his wife Yeganeh Salehi
On November 18, 2014, authorities informed Rezaian that investigations against him are ongoing, and that his pretrial detention has been extended for another two months, a source familiar with his case told Human Rights Watch. Prosecutors have not allowed the lawyer hired by Rezaians family to defend him, to speak with him, or to review his case file, the source said. The source added that despite Rezaians inability to read or write Persian, authorities did not provide him with an official translator during his interrogation. With a judges approval, detaining authorities can, under Iranian law, hold a suspect indefinitely and deny him access to counsel.
If authorities had evidence that Rezaian had committed a real crime, they should have charged him shortly after his arrest, said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East and North Africa director. At this point, they should simply release him.
The Washington Post reported on July 24 that Rezaian had been arrested by security agents two days earlier together with his wife, Yeganeh Salehi, also a journalist, and an unnamed photojournalist and her spouse. They were arrested a day after Irans Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance renewed Rezaians press credentials.
Gholamhossein Esmaeili, the head of Tehrans judiciary, confirmed Rezaians arrest on July 25, saying he had been detained for some questions, but gave no other explanation. He said the judiciary would issue further details after completing its investigation, which has not yet happened. Authorities have since released Salehi and the others on bail, but have not yet charged them. Human Rights Watch is concerned, based on information it has received, that Salehi and Rezaians family have been pressured by authorities not to speak to the media or publicize the circumstances of his ongoing detention.

St. Louis police chief apologizes for 'Kids will be kids' Facebook post referencing Tamir Rice with advice for kids …
Posted: at 4:40 am
The St. Louis County Police Department has issued an apology following public outcry over a post to the department Facebook page that referenced 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was killed by police in Cleveland last month while playing with a toy gun and then offered advice for parents about letting children have toy guns. The post, which was sent out on Facebook and Twitter shortly before 6 a.m. EST, was taken down a few hours later.
"This article is not about this (sic) a boy losing his life, whether this was a justified shooting or, whether the cops acted too fast," the post stated. "This is about the Fenton precinct making its residents aware of a 'hot' topic and learning from this incident so Fenton never loses a child's life."
The post outlined the ways a police officer is trained to respond when someone calls about a gun that may or may not be real. The author of the post says that it is the parent's responsibility to train their children for interactions with police officers should they happen. The children should be trained to throw down the gun and may be instructed to lie on the ground, the post said.
Here is the full post, which was accompanied by a photo of an Airsoft gun:
The post was met with a generally negative response on social media. At one point the top liked comment under the Facebook post said, "Stop trying to make excuses for OTHER BAD COPS."
Police Chief Jon Belmar issued a statement apologizing for the Facebook post several hours after it was removed.
As Chief of Police, I apologize to Tamir's family and anyone who was offended by the post. While the post did not originate from the Chief's Office and I was unaware of its presence prior to its release, I realize the message was insensitive to Tamir's family and the sorrow they are currently experiencing. The post conveyed the message that my officers respond to calls involving a child with a gun with indiscretion and little regard for life. I want to emphasize that my officers respond to calls with discernment, and have the highest regard for human life. We train officers to take all facts and circumstances into consideration when making decisions about using force.
The Facebook post has been removed and because of this incident, the social media policy has been altered in order to prevent future occurrences. I know social media is an effective way to provide the public with information, and I will make every effort to ensure that we do it in a responsible manner. Our continued thoughts and prayers go out to Tamir's family in this trying time."
Earlier in the day, a reporter tweeted the following conversation with the department:

Post co-founder Kathleen OKeefe dies at 54
Posted: December 4, 2014 at 8:41 pm
Kathleen Anne OKeefe, co-founder of the Phnom Penh Post and mentor to a generation of Cambodian journalists, died in the United States on Monday. She was 54.
OKeefe had battled pancreatic cancer for nine months, which she faced with her customary backbone of steel, her family wrote in an obituary published in The Boston Globe.
In turns newspaper founder, media trainer, human rights worker and advocate for those with HIV/AIDS, OKeefe is remembered by family, friends and former colleagues as resilient, compassionate and deeply empathetic.
In 1992, with then-husband Michael Hayes, OKeefe moved to Cambodia from Bangkok, where she had been working for a refugee organisation, to launch the Post, which started as a fortnightly newspaper.
It was to be the first independent newspaper in any language in Cambodia since the Khmer Rouge took over in 1975.
The couple rented a three-storey villa opposite Wat Botum and lived on the first floor of a building that would house the newspapers offices, their home and various other guests, including foreign correspondent and early Post contributor Nate Thayer.
Those who worked at the paper as it was getting off the ground say the ambitious project would likely have foundered without OKeefes steady hand.
Kathleen OKeefe was the Phnom Penh Posts secret weapon a combination of General Patton and Mother Teresa, Thayer said.
There was never any question among anyone, from the get go, that it was Kathleen who was in charge, the irreplaceable glue that kept the very, very goofy idea of planting the flag of the Free Press in the headquarters of the belly of the beast, Phnom Penh, alive.
I cant tell you how many times Michael Hayes reiterated that the paper could simply not survive without Kathleen.

I refuse to post a picture of my baby on Facebook

CON: My extended friendship circle doesn't get to see amazing moments like these.
In my Facebook newsfeed, it's common for brand-new parents to post pictures of their babies as a modern-day birth announcement. I love these posts. I love getting updates on how the baby and mother are doing, and I love cute pictures because I am a human being with a beating heart in my chest. But bad news for my Facebook friends: I won't be posting pictures of my baby on Facebook.
There are pros and cons to this policy.
Pro: The smugness of privacy
It always felt to me that people who really value their privacy are very important and also have a huge amount of self-control. Like the really cool celebrities. Or people who don't even have Facebook. Oh man, I wish I could be one of those people.
Instead, I periodically pretend like I don't have Facebook, feel like a million bucks for a week, then cave like that scene in Flight and binge on my newsfeed for a few hours. I am not important, and I constantly overshare. I have almost posted baby pictures a few times, but the thing that stopped me, more than my husband's insistence and my own fear of his image being misappropriated, is the delicious smugness I feel.
Con: What's the use of feeling smug if people don't even know how cute he is?
Beyonce probably feels great about people not seeing pictures of Blue Ivy because everybody knows about Blue Ivy. If nobody knows about my baby, there's no way for them to be impressed that I haven't posted pictures of him.
This reminds me of when I started college. I sent a lot of e-mails to my close high school friends, detailing all the new friends I was making and experiences I was having. I was obsessive about communicating the minutiae of my college experience because I felt like if my old friends didn't know about it, it didn't happen. Now this is true on a much larger scale. If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to Instagram it, did it really happen?

ST. LOUIS -- The chief of the St. Louis County Police Department apologized Thursday for a post on a precinct's Facebook page that referenced the police shooting death of a 12-year-old Cleveland boy who was carrying a pellet gun.
The post, titled "Kids Will Be Kids?" was published Thursday morning on the City of Fenton's Facebook page and removed hours later. It did not mention Tamir Rice by name, but implied that the boy's actions played a role in his death.
In part, the post urged to talk with their children about the Nov. 22 shooting and inspect any pellet guns they may own to make sure an orange tip was in place.

"Your children should have rules for 'toy' guns that mirror the rules of a real weapon," the post read.
"Warn them that these 'toys' do look like real guns and could result in the police getting called on them. The police may get called to respond to 'a child with a gun,' 'maybe a toy gun,' it is important to know how officers are trained to respond," the message said, adding advice for children to follow if they are confronted by police.
Reaction on social media was swift, with people calling the post "insanity" and "tone deaf and dangerous."

St. Louis Police Chief Apologizes for Offensive Tamir Rice Facebook Post
Posted: at 8:40 pm
In a Facebook post Thursday afternoon, St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar apologized for an earlier offensive and insensitive post about the killing of 12-year-old Tamir Rice by a police officer in Cleveland.
The intention of the post was to inform citizens about the potential danger of airsoft or pellet guns resembling real guns, Belmar said. However, the post was a misguided communication strategy and was offensive to many people.
Belmar went on to apologize to Rices family for the insensitive post, and explained the original intent of the post:
The post conveyed the message that my officers respond to calls involving a child with a gun with indiscretion and little regard for life. I want to emphasize that my officers respond to calls with discernment, and have the highest regard for human life. We train officers to take all facts and circumstances into consideration when making decisions about using force.
I too was a kid, and I too would have done the same thing as Tamir Rice did, Aaron Dilks, the officer responsible for the post, told Mediaite. I was allowed to go play with guns, and have BB guns we didnt have Airsofts at the time. The point of the kids will be kids is thats what kids will doThe point of putting [the post] out was to educate and make sure something like this doesnt happen in the city of Fenton or in our area.
Heres the Facebook post in question from Thursday morning:
And the apology, also via Facebook:

Mindanao rights group to file case vs police official after violent dispersal
Posted: at 7:41 am
DAVAO CITY Contingents of a human rights caravan from Mindanao to Manila, Manilakbayan, is now preparing their legal documents to file a case against the Philippine National Police-Quezon City Police District (PNP-QCPD) officerPolice Superintendent Col. Pedro Sanchez and his subordinates, following a violent dispersal last November 29 that left fifteen injured including two media practitioners.
Over 300 people representing Mindanaos different sectors and mostly indigenous people participated in theManilakbayan ng Mindanao. The Manilakbayan (Journey to Metro Manila) started last November 12 passing by Visayas, and the Bicol and Tagalog regions where their counterparts met and joined them.
In a press statement sent to Davao Today, Wednesday, Jomorito Goaynon, spokesperson of Manilakbayan said that around 20 policemen of Police Station 2, Masambong Police Station under PNP-QCPD led by Sanchez harassed and violently dispersed more than 200 lumads and farmers at the protest action in front of President Benigno Aquinos house in Times Street.
Jomorito Goaynon, spokesperson of Manilakbayan ng Mindanao said that instead of addressing the demands of the Mindanaoans who traveled afar to register the human rights situation of hinterland Mindanao to the president and to the broadest Filipino people, we were met with a violent dispersal from the police.
Goaynon said they were expecting that the president would take actions on their urgent demands, among which are the pull-out of army battalions in Mindanao, the cessation of destructive agro-foreign projects, the stop of military attacks on community schools, the dismissal of trumped-up charges, and the stop of extrajudicial killings in Mindanao.
According to a fact sheet prepared by human rights group Karapatan, there were 15 individuals from the ranks of the protesters who were injured including two media men. Sevenwere from Southern Tagalog, seven from Southern Mindanao Region, two from CARAGA Region and one from the National Capital Region.
Jay Apiag, spokesperson of Karapatan North Cotabato was hit on the neck that caused him to faint. Apiag was then rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center.
While, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) Secretary-General Antonio Tonying Flores, one of the leaders who negotiated with Sanchez, was arbitrarily arrested during the protest. He was detained in Camp Karingal, the headquarters of QCPD, for four days.
Karapatan said that at approximately9:30in the morning, they started to march from the Bureau of Internal Revenue office in Quezon City. We were prevented to pass through when a police patrol car and five policemen blocked the road.
The program started at around9:55 amand additional 10 police men positioned in front of the gate while a negotiation was going on between the two parties. P/Supt. Sanchez arrived in the area around10:05 amand commanded his men to disperse the protest, the group said.
