LETTER: Some politically incorrect New Year’s resolutions

Posted: at 12:42 pm

My New Years resolutions lack political correctness and may offend others. Thank God for the freedom we have to be offended.

1) I will delete any FWD: messages unless I am expecting them. I dont have time for recycled, non-humorous jokes and news stories. By the time I get an email FWD: Ive already heard it several times. Mom, I love you dearly, but this applies to you too.

2) I will delete e-blessings. I believe God will bless me as He sees fit and not because I forward this email to ten people in the next 15 minutes. How ridiculous. I will pray for all of you to receive blessings when you dont forward me those silly emails. If you really want to bless me then come to church with me.

3) I will delete support the troops emails. I support the troops every day and I always will regardless of whether or not I break the chain. I am an American who appreciates the sacrifices made by our troops. Praying for them will do more than a forwarded email. Approach service members you see, shake their hands, and thank them for their service personally. No email on earth can match the feeling of gratitude youll see in their eyes! Teach your kids this too.

4) I will always return phone calls personally. I much prefer a personal conversation to the PC screen. People can call me if its that funny or that important.

Happy New Year!

RONNIE DELBACCO Easton

The Pulse: Let the public do the firing

Posted: at 9:42 am

I find Phil Robertson's comments about gays appalling, but that doesn't mean I think A&E should have suspended the Duck Dynasty star. Professional death sentences for politically incorrect, even hateful, speech were all too common in 2013. Just ask Martin Bashir, Alec Baldwin, and Paula Deen.

Bashir made a disgusting comment about Sarah Palin and lost his job on MSNBC. Baldwin lost his cable program after pillaging the paparazzi and then lamely attempting to argue that he'd shouted "fathead," not a slur for homosexuals that begins with an "f." Food Network, among others, had its fill of Paula Deen after she acknowledged, in a lawsuit deposition, having used the n-word and confirmed her desire to stage a "true Southern plantation-style theme" wedding for her brother, Earl "Bubba" Hiers.

As each, like Robertson, is dependent upon fickle viewers for a livelihood, why can't the court of public opinion render its judgment instead of employers? Robertson, Bashir, Baldwin, and Deen should all lose their TV shows when public scorn impacts their ratings, not because media outlets have exercised their discretion on our behalf.

These cases could also use a little more consistency. Too many tend to evaluate controversial speech through partisan prisms, allowing feelings toward the speaker to cloud the debate. You can't have it both ways. Either they should all be fired, or none of them should. Anything else is splitting hairs.

In the latest example, voices that once cried for Bashir or Baldwin's ouster now try to defend Robertson's right to free speech and practice his religion. But wrapping himself in the Bible makes Robertson's speech no less offensive. And make no mistake: He didn't just quote scripture and cast doubt on gays' admittance to the Kingdom of God. He equated a lifestyle predetermined at birth with a choice to kill 3,000 on 9/11:

"We never, ever judge someone on who's going to heaven, hell. That's the Almighty's job. We just love 'em, give 'em the good news about Jesus - whether they're homosexual, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort 'em out later, you see what I'm saying?"

Yes, we can all see what you're saying, namely that you believe in a moral equivalency among gays, drunks, and al-Qaeda, a pretty un-Godly view.

Still, A&E should not have put the star on "indefinite hiatus" from filming - a status that ended Friday with his being restored to the series.

In a statement at the time he was suspended, A&E said, "We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson's comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty. His personal views in no way reflect those of A&E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community."

Anchorman 2, a review by Stewart Perrin

Posted: December 26, 2013 at 10:43 pm

Comments(0)

BURGUNDY is back in the long-awaited sequel to the cult comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

Will Ferrell returns to play the role of the self obsessed, politically incorrect title character, along with the rest of his news team, ladies' man Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), sports reporter Champ Kind (David Koechner) and of course the witless Brick Tamland (Steve Carell).

Promotion

The movie begins with Ron and his now wife Christina Corningstone as co-anchors of the daytime national news, but all turns awry when Christina is given a promotion.

Split from his wife and at a low ebb, again, Burgundy is approached to join the country's first 24-hour news channel, but his one proviso is that he reunites his news team.

Using his new position he redefines news broadcasting, Ron Burgundy style.

There are some laugh out loud moments in the film such as when Ron meets his new girlfriend's family, Brick thinking he has lost his legs, and a funny slow motion scene whilst driving a campervan.

There are some witty one liners that are hysterical, but also cringy if you know of the implications such as references to OJ Simpson and BP oil.

The film is fully loaded with cameo appearances by other Hollywood stars, but possibly too many as they drag a certain scene out longer than is funny.

Jeff Dunham Bringing His Not-So-PC Humor To Hartford

Posted: at 10:43 pm

Ventriloquism supposedly went out with the Nehru jacket and pay phones. But apparently that's not so. Jeff Dunham is the most popular stand-up comic in North America, according to Pollstar. com

"I'm thrilled that people continue to come out and see me," Dunham said. "I don't take it for granted. I work hard to make sure they come back."

According to Forbes.com, Dunham is the third highest paid comedian in the country behind Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock. However, the New York comedy icons make their fortune primarily courtesy of television syndication.

Much of the filthy lucre in the Dallas native's bank accounts has been made courtesy of touring.

Dunham, 51, has single-handedly revived ventriloquism, which appeared to be a dying art a decade ago.

'America's Got Talent' alum Terry Fator, who signed a $100 million deal with the Mirage in Las Vegas, tips his cap to Dunham. It's difficult to imagine Fator, a singing ventriloquist, scoring such an outlandish contract if it weren't for Dunham.

"I have to give Jeff Dunham a lot of credit," Fator said. "He really helped pave the way and bring ventriloquism back. It's an art form. His success is amazing compared to what other comics accomplish."

What other humorist sells out arenas? Dunham packs the airplane hangars thanks to his collection of colorful dummies and a welcomed politically incorrect sense of humor.

"I can get away with things that other comics can't because of the puppets," Dunham said. "It's kind of like working with cartoon characters. With the puppets, I can push it. That's where the fun comes in for me. Some people might think I cross a line but that's apparently a small percentage of people. Most of the people who come out love it."

That's evident. Dunham clearly knows what he's doing. He's not afraid to offend. His fearlessness led to the invention of Achmed the Dead Terrorist, a skeleton puppet with a bad attitude.
