Chelmsford TeleMedia show honors Citizens of the Year

Posted: at 3:42 pm

Five residents were recognized for their volunteerism in 2013 during the annual "Chelmsford Citizens of the Year" episode of "Politically Incorrect," hosted by Tom Christiano on Chelmsford TeleMedia.

The town began to formally recognize outstanding residents during the first "Citizens of the Year Awards" in 2006. Christiano began his Dec. 19, 2013 taping by announcing Linda Prescott, Eliot Lea, Peggy Dunn, Stefani Bush and Maureen McKeown as Citizens of the Year.

Featured on the hour-long 357th taping was Town Manager Paul Cohen, along with this years panelists and former recipients. Giving their two-cents were Zoning Board of Appeals member and 2009 recipient Charlie Wojtas, President of the Historical Society and 2012 recipient Becky Warren and lead Open Space Steward and 2008 recipient Phil Stanway.

"We try not to pick people who are full-time employees," said Christiano. "Those who go above and beyond their jobs and you volunteer for the town in so many ways and the towns people and thats what we try to thank and show appreciation for every year with these awards."

Going down in history

Warren led the discussion surrounding Prescott, who since coming to Chelmsford has had a passion for preserving its past. According to Warren, several old homes in town have been protected thanks to Prescotts efforts. Shes been a member of the Chelmsford Historical Commission, which she served as chairwoman. Shes also been involved in the towns Master Plan Committee.

"So her involvement in looking at the big picture for the town, where are the important places to protect and shes been a champion in making sure those areas get protected whether its a house, a barn, whether its a district to keep the feel of Chelmsford," said Warren.

Prescott began as a self-proclaimed "bucket lady," documenting and etching gravestones at local cemeteries. This marked her start in her exploration of Chelmsfords history. Currently, Prescott is a member of the Community Preservation Fund Committee, the Chelmsford Historical Commission. Stanway praised Prescott for her wealth of reliable information.

Going Green

Stanway was instrumental in selecting 2013s Green Citizen of the Year.

Germany’s ‘Fack Ju Gohte’ Tops $60 Million

Posted: January 9, 2014 at 6:42 am

A politically incorrect comedy that mocks current debates about school reform, immigration and economic disparity has become the biggest hit in years in Germany. Bora Dagtekin's Fack Ju Gohte, produced by Munich-based production house Rat Pack and distributed by Constantin Film, has sold more than six million tickets since its release late last year, earning more than $60 million at the German box office so far.

The film's German title, rendered as Suck Me Shakespeer in English, is a German phonetic transcription of "F-- You, Goethe." It's a tidy summing up of both the poor spelling skills of the lead character -- a ex-con turned substitute teacher -- and the film's irreverent tone.

Fack Ju Gohte is on track to become one of the top ten German films of all time. The success proves Dagtekin's freshman effort, 2012's Turkish For Beginners, wasn't a fluke. Both he and Elyas M'Barek -- star of both Turkish for Beginners and Fack Ju Gohte -- are now firmly established on Germany's A-List.

There is good news all round for German films as 2014 kicks off. In addition to Fack Ju Gohte, medieval period drama The Physician and romantic comedy Buddy, from hit maker Michael "Bully" Herbig, also grace the country's top ten. Universal is distributing The Physician while Warner Bros. is handling Buddy in Germany.

2013 in Review: Box Office Hits and Misses Around the World

Posted: January 3, 2014 at 8:42 pm

12:00 AM PST 1/3/2014 by THR Staff

Russia mined Stalingrad for box office gold, a Swedish biopic about a 1960s jazz singer hit number two on the charts and a politically-incorrect comedy about German school kids got top grades. But a Japanese remake of Unforgiven faced harsh retribution, the French had a rare off year and Australian audiences thought a promising new comedy just wasnt cricket. Here are the most surprising successes and shocking failures from international films this year.

Germany: School Comedy Fack Ju Gohte Does the Sums

For two years running, the director/actor team of helmer Bora Dagtekin and star Elyas MBarek has topped the German charts with politically incorrect comedies. Their follow up to 2012 hit Turkish for Beginners was the schooldays laffer Fack Ju Gohte that opened in November and was closing in on a $50 million gross just as German school kids take off for the Christmas holidays.

China: Finding Mr. Right Taps Mainlands New Rich

Low budget local language comedies continue to rule the Chinese box office and the breakout hit this year was romcom Finding Mr. Right, from director Xue Xiaolu. The $5 million feature pulled in $85.4 at the Chinese tills. Star Tang Wei, best known outside China for her role in Ang Lee's Lust, Caution, plays a city girl who is pure New China, a rich man's mistress obsessed with material wealth, who comes to Seattle to have her lover's baby.

Argentina: GOOOOOL for Campanellas Foosball

After winning the Oscar forThe Secret in Her Eyes, Argentine director Juan Jose Campanella tried something completely different: a 3D animated kids film about soccer. Foosball was a massive hit, scoring $14.2 million at the local box office, making it the countrys number three film, just behind Monsters Universityand Despicable Me 2.

India: Run Milka Run Finishes Strong

The sports biopic genre is only beginning to be tapped in Bollywood. Last year hit Paan Singh Tomar, about a champion athlete turned real-life bandit, was one of the first. But sports drama hit broke new records with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Run Milkha Run, the story of Indian sprinter Milkha Singh, aka the Flying Sikh. Star Farhan Akhtar underwent grueling physical training to lend credibility to his performance which won over critics and audiences alike. Run Mikha Run easily crossed the coved film 1 billion rupee ($16.7 million) mark in general release.

Another Politically Incorrect Year . . .

Posted: January 2, 2014 at 11:42 am

Yeah, were looking for a continuation of being politically incorrect in the new year. Like many who have seen many years come and go, we arent going to change. When you cant tell the truth because it might offend somebody, its a sad commentary on life today in the USA.

We are sick of much that is the norm today, such as the casualness that has gripped America and other parts of the world we have visited. We are not only too casual in dress but in many other things. Too many people dont know what the meaning of respect is, and its lacking in their everyday behavior.

Nothing is more irritating than the neglect in using Thank You and instead we hear the nauseating Have a Nice Day. Those words are not the same as Thank You. When you pay $45 or $50 to fill up at the gasoline station and the cashier says Have a Nice Day, thats an insult. You feel like telling them to go to . . . ! Believe it or not, when buying gasoline at a local station Sunday, the lady cashier said Thank You. Doesnt happen very often but she is from another generation and no kid. Wed nominate her for Cashier of the Year if there would be such an award. Made our day!

Wonder who the senseless person is who started this Have a Nice Day verbiage garbage that has taken the place of Thank You?

We have this politically correct campaign going on that you cant call an athletic team the Indians because people of that race might be offended. Every so often an Indian tries to make it sound like a racial slur. The guy probably is more interested in gaining publicity than anything else. Wed be proud to play for a team called the Americans. We kinda like the name, the Whitees. Even Crackers would be OK. In fact, we like the name Indians. The Indians were brave, great fighters, and when we think of an Indian we relate that to high courage and a warrior.

And, please dont offend anybody who has a different sexual outlook on such institutions as marriage. Thats being downright rude and, of course, politically incorrect!

We must not alienate the young because they are more sensitive, which means they are more politically correct. Bull droppings! But we must remember they are smarter than we are.

To be politically correct we must allow women to be in combat. They have the same rights as a man to be in combat, serve on a submarine, fly a fighter plane and to kill the enemy. We recognize that there has been discrimination against women, but barriers have been coming down, as they should. It does beg the question of if we have another draft of men, should women be drafted also? We dont think so and that may be politically incorrect.

There has been some good in being politically correct, but there also has been outright silliness!

Its comforting to be in the company of other politically incorrect people. If they live long enough they will see changes. Americans are known for mood changes. For proof, consider some of the presidents we have elected!

‘Duck Dynasty’ patriarch Phil Robertson once offered this ‘river rat’ advice: 15-year-olds make the best wives (video)

Posted: at 2:42 am

If you thought the Duck Dynasty firestorm had died down when A&E backed off on its decision to suspend Phil Robertson from his hit reality show, heres some fresh fuel: Old footage has surfaced on YouTube of the politically incorrect patriarch advising bachelors to get their brides young.

You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. Theyll pick your ducks, Robertson said at a Sportsmens Ministry retreat in Georgia, discussing the merits of a wife who will clean his birds. The 67-year-old should know: He began dating his wife of 47 years, Miss Kay, when she was 14, marrying her two years later in 1966.

You need to check with mom and dad about that, of course, Robertson advises in the footage. It was shot in 2009 but is now just coming back to haunt him in the wake of a GQ magazine interview in which he compares homosexuality to bestiality and argues that African Americans were happy in the pre-Civil Rights era. His comments sparked outrage among gay and civil rights advocates, but A&Es effort to discipline Robertson stirred a backlash among fans of the TV show, who launched a petition.

Sharing what he called river rat counseling, he also tells the young men: Make sure that she can cook a meal. You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out. Make sure she carries her Bible. Thatll save you a lot of trouble down the road.

With all that in mind, he laments, a good wife is getting hard to find.

Mainly because these boys are waiting until they get to be about 20 years old before they marry them, he says. Look, you wait until they get to be 20 years old, the only picking thats going to take place is your pocket.
