Stephen Colbert's Politically Incorrect Joke Sparks Outrage On Twitter

Posted: at 12:42 am

Though Stephen Colbert intentionally plays an ignorant character on his TV show, some argue his satirical Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever went too far.

During Wednesdays show, Colbert made fun of Redskins owner Dan Snyder, who announced a charity organization for Native Americans.

Assuming a simple charity could clear up any politically incorrect hiccups, Colberts character decided to found the Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever. His highly stereotypical character, Ching-Chong Ding-Dong, he then assumed would be acceptable.

I am willing to show [the] Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever, he tweeted.

Despite the jokes intent, it has since sparked outrage and is trending on Twitter under the hash tag #CancelColbert.

When satire becomes as offensive and hurtful as the thing satirized it is no longer satire, one user tweeted. It is simply more injustice.

Watch the segment here.

Movie Review: Youngistaan

Cast: Jackky Bhagnani, Neha Sharma and Farooque Sheikh Director: Syde Ahmad Afzal

Wish it was so easy to become the Prime Minister of India from a pub-hopping youngster. Wish it was so easy to even romance your girlfriend in between official duties and sing songs against the backdrop of the Tajmahal even as the security paid vigil. Wish it was so easy to scuttle opposition within the party and outside it. Wish it was so easy to enjoy a sweeping victory at the polls just by youthful rhetoric and platitudes

Well, debutant director Syed Ahmad Afzal ends up doing just that in Vashu Bhagnanis Youngistaan. Abhminayu Kaul (Jackky Bhagnani), a games developer living in Japan, gives up his well-paying job and freedom to don the Prime Ministers cap just to honour the promise he gave to his terminally ill father (Boman Irani plays the dying PM). Then on the takeover of the nation is as smooth for him as taking over a well-established family business. The only distraction comes in the form of his relentlessly demanding girlfriend Anvita (Neha Sharma), whod rather romance on the streets than become a princess in a castle.

The film seems topical and could have cut across audiences given the current election scenario but lacks the gravitas of a political drama, which particularly associates itself with the highest seat of power. While there are a million problems that a country faces, the acting PMs problem in the film is only dealing with an immature girlfriend who yearns to have matka kulfi at 4 am! And while she loves him enough to accompany him from Japan and even bear his child, for some reason, shes reluctant to marry him, thereby inviting ire of a conservative public.

Performance wise Jackky Bhagnani is earnest though he lacks the lan that is intrinsic to a character of such power. Neha Sharma is confident and pretty and has the potential to etch her way in showbiz. But the most endearing part of the film is the late Farooque Sheikh (plays the PMs assistant Akbar). Natural, unassuming and flawless, hes gone beyond his penned character. Interestingly, the beginning of the film pays a tribute to the late actor by showing clippings of him on the set where he even happens to tell Jackky, Mera last day tumhare last day se pehle hoga!

The films highlight is the Sufi qawwali Daata di diwaani composed by Shiraz Uppal, composed by Shakeel Sohail and sung by Shiraz Uppal and Rafaqat Ali Khan. The number is the soulful oasis in the simplistic film.

Bill Maher gives good bad impression

Posted: March 27, 2014 at 8:42 pm

Written by: Matthew Griebel on March 27, 2014.

As if the city of Las Vegas was not politically incorrect enough, controversial comedian Bill Maher upped the ante Saturday night at the Pearl inside the Palms Hotel and Casino.

Every time I come to Las Vegas, my material always seems to shock everyone, said Maher. Who would have guessed there was so much morality in Sin City?

Maher was right. For an hour and half, Maher delivered an unapologetic set with plenty of jokes to offend the most close-minded and conservative of audience members.

The Palms and Maher have arranged a deal where he performs at the resort for two weekends every year. It is a sort of residency, but it allows Mafer to perform new material each night rather than using the same rehashed material. Those who saw Maher in his recent appearance at the Palms were treated to a new set of jokes.

This is why I will always see him when he comes to town, said audience member Gina Ransic. I have seen Maher eight times over the years, and he keeps his jokes current. Sure, he may make fun of Sarah Palins stupidity every performance, but at least the punch lines remain fresh.

The former governor of Alaska, conservative Christians, Russia, Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney, rednecks and many more were the subjects of Mahers comedic wrath Saturday night.

Making jokes about Vladimir Putin and Russia really do not require much thought, said Maher. All you need to do is sub Russian policies in for Republican policies, and replace Putin with any republican in office.

The missing Malaysian airplane did not receive much play by Maher despite it being the hot story of the time. However, he did have a theory on the planes whereabouts.

Knight: NBA 'raped' college basketball

Posted: March 26, 2014 at 12:47 pm

TOM MAHON, Daily News Staff Writer mahont@phillynews.com Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2014, 3:01 AM

BOBBY KNIGHT apparently doesn't realize that people actually listen to what he says.

Yesterday, the former college basketball coach railed against the NBA in an appearance on ESPN radio's "Mike and Mike" show.

And he used a poor choice of words when asked about Duke's Jabari Parker and Kansas' Andew Wiggins, freshmen who are headed to the NBA despite subpar performances in the NCAA Tournament.

"If I were involved with the NBA I wouldn't want a 19-year-old or a 20-year-old kid, to bring into all the travel and all the problems that exist in the NBA," Knight said. "I would want a much more mature kid. I would want a kid that maybe I've been watching on another team and now he's 21, 22 years old instead of 18 or 19, and I might trade for that kid. On top of it all, the NBA does a tremendous, gigantic disservice to college basketball. It's as though they've raped college basketball, in my opinion."

Knight is entitled to that opinion. But he wasn't wise to use the R-word.

An ESPN spokesman issued the following damage-control statement yesterday: "We spoke with him. ESPN regrets the use of the word."

ESPN? What about Knight?

He should know better. He has, after all, been down this politically incorrect path before.
