READY: Open letter from the Prince of Darkness

Posted: April 7, 2014 at 8:42 am

Most of this column takes the form of a letter, but first an admission as to its content.

Be advised the following is politically incorrect, intolerant, judgmental, and controversial. As well as in-your-face religious.

But this is an opinion column after all, so I believe in what Im saying.

An atheist-funded research poll claims 2 out of 3 Americans acknowledge the existence of the Devil and a place called Hell. After the events of September 11, 2001, that number rose to 71 percent (Harris/Gallup Poll) and then rises and falls depending upon the latest horrific school shooting or act of terrorism.

I, too, believe in Satan and in a fiery place of eternal punishment for lost souls. The heavy metal rock singer, Marilyn Manson, believes in it also. He says hes confident hes going there after his death, laughing, Im gonna say that it (Hell) would be a more comfortable place for me because everyone I know will be there, and I wouldnt be allowed to have any fun in heaven. At least, hes not one of those many Christians who believe pretty much were all going to heaven by being a good person.

In my often dark thoughts, Ive let Satan into my head long enough to compose an open letter as I think he might write to his disciples:

Dear To- Whom- It- Applies:

I know you probably dont believe in me, but I believe in you. Youre one of my great successes. I saw you this morning as you began your day. You awoke without thanksgiving for being alive and well, or for the beautiful spring day. You werent even appreciative you had a hot cup of coffee and a good breakfast. Youre so ungrateful, I like that about you.

Easters coming in a few weeks, and I heard you say something about getting the family new outfits and Easter baskets for the kids. I suppose since you showed up last Christmas, youll pat yourself on the back as you warm the pew in your finery. Youll promise the preacher to come back next week, but you and I both know youll find something more important to do when Sunday comes. I heard your mumbled thoughts about going to church this Sunday so youll feel less phony about attending on Easter. As your best fiend (uhmm, I mean friend), let me give you some great excuses for missing services anytime:

Getting the kids dressed in their Sunday best first thing in the morning stresses me out. I dont like the songs they sing. I was forced to go when I was younger. There are too many hypocrites in church. Theyre always asking me for money. I work hard all week; Im entitled to a day of rest.

Mickey Rooney, Hollywood legend, dead at 93

Posted: at 8:42 am

Legendary actor Mickey Rooney died Sunday. He was 93.

Larry Dietz, a Los Angeles County Coroner's office duty officer, confirmed the death to CBS News. No further information was available.

When it came down to it, Rooney knew how to fix anything: He put on a show for nearly nine decades as an entertainer -- sometimes a ham, sometimes a 5-foot-3-inch smart aleck.

But there was no one bigger at the box office in the late '30s. He was so popular that Rooney himself declared that Walt Disney named a certain cartoon mouse after him. Just as famous as his films were his marriages -- eight of them, including sex siren Ava Gardner. He and his most recent wife, Jan Chamberlin, separated in June 2012.

The Hollywood legend, whose career spanned more than 80 years, has died at the age of 93

"I've been married so many times, I'm the only guy you know that has a marriage license made out 'to whom it may concern,'" Rooney once said.

Rooney was born Joesph Yule Jr. to vaudeville parents; he started in silent films at the age of 6. Talkies followed, including a 20-year-run playing an all-American boy-next-door named Andy Hardy, whose first obsession was an all-American girl-next-door Judy Garland, including "Babes in Arms" (1939), "Strike up the Band" (1940), "Babes on Broadway" (1941) and "Girl Crazy" (1943). They went on to star together in other musicals as well. Call it chemistry, call it movie magic. Together, they were unstoppable.

Rooney did drama, too. His first serious role was the troubled youngster to Spencer Tracy's patient priest in "Boys Town" -- a film that earned him the first of his two honorary Oscars. He also played opposite Elizabeth Taylor in "National Velvet" and with Anthony Quinn in "Requiem for a Heavyweight."

In "Breakfast at Tiffany's," Rooney played a caricature of a Japanese man -- politically incorrect by today's standards. Although he turned down the role of the deliberately politically incorrect Archie Bunker in the TV show, "All in the Family."

The Red River Shootout became politically incorrect. Calling it the Red River Rivalry was apparently too obvious.

So this years Texas-Oklahoma game in October has been dubbed the AT&T Red River Showdown, according to both schools and the telecom giant. A new logo highlighting both teams was created and will be on full display Oct. 11.

This is the ninth year that AT&T has been a title sponsor of the Longhorns-Sooners matchup, which is known simply as Texas-OU or OU-Texas depending on which side of the Red River you live. It shifted from the Red River Shootout to the Red River Rivalry in 2005.

Were excited to continue connecting college football fans to this iconic game for years to come, said Mark Wright, AT&T vice president of media services and sponsorships.

Analysis: U.S. Cozies Up to Kiev Government Including Far Right

Posted: March 30, 2014 at 7:45 am

The U.S. and Europe have been emphatic in their support of the new Ukrainian government but a significant number of Washington's new bedfellows are members of what some experts class as extreme right-wing parties.

When Sen. John McCain traveled to Kiev in December, he told the crowd of 200,000 on Independence Square: "The free world is with you, America is with you, I am with you."

But among those stood next to the veteran Republican was Oleh Tyahnybok, leader of the Svoboda Party. Some policy analysts have called Svoboda ultra-nationalist and even neo-Nazi.

Sen. John McCain waves to pro-European protesters during a mass rally at Independence Square in Kiev in December. Oleh Tyahnybok is seen to his right.

Svoboda, which means "Freedom," was given almost a quarter of the Cabinet positions in the interim government formed after the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych in February.

The party's policies center around protecting the rights of what it calls ethnic Ukrainians, the preservation of the Ukrainian language and culture, and strict controls on immigration.

Although much of the more extreme content has now been removed from Svobodas leaflets, the European Parliament passed a resolution on Ukraine in 2012 that asked Kiev not to associate with the party on account of its racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic views.

One of the party's lawmakers was appointed to run the powerful defense ministry before being forced out. However, Svoboda still holds one of the vice prime minister posts as well as the ministries of agriculture and the environment. According to Foreign Policy magazine, this represents the largest far-right representation in any government in Europe.

The appointment of Svoboda co-founder Andriy Parubiy to position of secretary of the Security and National Defense Committee has raised eyebrows. Although now a member of the liberal-conservative Fatherland party, Parubiy led anti-Yanukovych street militias in Kiev in the wake of protests that erupted in December.

No matter how politically incorrect it is to play with things that shoot, the fact is that kids and plenty of adults love em. So here are some of our Spring faves.

Djubi Classic (Djubi)

Playing catch must be one of the oldest games in existence, and one might think that after millions of years, wed have exhausted every possible variation. But then along comes Djubi Classic, which is part slingshot, part baseball glove, part lacrosse stick, part racquetball racquet, part butterfly net, and all fun. The game comes with two racquets and two balls called Djubis, which are attached to a stretchy rubber loop. Just hook the loop over the special notch on the racquet, pull it back like a sling shot, and let er rip toward your partner who can be as far as 100 feet away. Then all you have to do is catch the Djubi in the racquets deep net. While not intended for indoor use, the racquets and Djubis are waterproof, which means you can take the fun to the pool or the beach. For ages 8 and up. $14.50. djubi.com
