Why it's getting harder to be politically correct all the time

Consider this true story: A teacher took out a lawsuit recently complaining that school bosses sacked her because of her disability. How mean! Or at least that's what I thought until I read that her official disability was "fear of children."

It seems this is an actual disease now, not just any intelligent person's reaction to being swarmed by sticky irrational creatures which emit astonishing amounts of biochemical acids from both ends.

You'd have thought that somewhere along the line this woman might have thought "schoolmarm" was not her ideal career, but no. It happened, of course, in the United States, where you can sue anyone for anything, including saving your life, giving birth to you, glancing momentarily in your direction, etc.

The reader who sent me the story, Margie K Chen, commented: "I'm opposed to discrimination, but it's getting hard to be politically correct." I so agree, Margie.

For example, people-smugglers are among the baddest of bad guys, right? But a reader sent me a report about cops in Madhya Pradesh, India, struggling to close down a bridal shop (a mobile store selling brides). Police located two brides who had been sold to men in the village of Ishagarh, but the women refused to be rescued, saying they were happy.

Husbands applauded the human- traffickers for their flexible pay plans. One bachelor couldn't afford the "recommended retail price" of a bride so the trafficker accepted a used buffalo as part-payment. Try that at your local IKEA.

I used to be politically correct (ie, a big softie) in parenting matters until a reader sent me a report about police using pepper spray to subdue an out-of-control child. The kid in question, an eight-year-old Colorado boy named Aiden, was smashing down a door to fulfill his aim of slaughtering the staff of his school.

Afterwards, a TV reporter asked little Aidan whether he really intended to kill his teachers. "A little," the child admitted.

I never use pepper spray when my children get out of control. I keep calm and we come to a compromise. I compromise by giving them what they want and they compromise by shutting up. This is known as "good parenting."

Fury taking global approach

Posted: April 24, 2014 at 5:43 pm

An Irishman, a Brazilian, a Ghanaian and a Canadian go onto a soccer field.

No, its the not beginning of a politically incorrect joke.

Rather, its the beginning of the Ottawa Fury FC North American Soccer League franchise, and coach Marc Dos Santos couldnt be more serious about the importance of a diverse roster as the starting point.

Its not going to take one month, Dos Santos said before Wednesdays game against FC Edmonton in the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship at Keith Harris Stadium. Its going to be hard. Its going to take time, but we believe were going to build a winning mentality. And to have that, we want to go after players that are going to have an international flavour.

One of the beauties of soccer, according to Dos Santos, is that its a worldwide sport. Accordingly, he used his own world wide web of contacts scouts, agents, former teammates and friends of friends in an attempt to find hidden gems who might have flown under the radar in more established pro soccer locales.

Every time you want to get better, maybe youre going to have to go to those countries, he said.

The Fury present an option for parents trying to get their kids to combine sports with education. A quick glance at the roster could lead to a quick geography and cultural lesson, learning about the different countries players come from.

Take, for instance, Hamza Elias, a talented 20-year-old midfielder from Ghana whom Dos Santos describes as a project because of his natural talent and youth. Dos Santos found him through a friend who scouts for Chelsea, fully recognizing that it could take some time for Elias to adapt to a different style of game and a dramatically different culture.

It is very different from Ghana, especially the weather, said Elias, who had never been out of his country before taking the whirlwind series of flights from the Ghanas capital, Accra, to Frankfurt, then Toronto, then Ottawa in March. This is the first time in this kind of weather. I have to learn with every situation, but Im very happy to be here.

I knew (Canada) was very good country to be in, a very peaceful country. I always wanted to come here when I was a child.

My name was changed from Alka Gujjar to Alka Singh to avoid controversy ahead of the elections: …

Posted: April 19, 2014 at 1:42 pm

Kangana Ranaut is one of those few actresses who bares her heart and speaks the truth in interviews. The too-good-to-be true demeanour that she displays in all her interviews was pretty evident when she recently came for 'Revolver Rani' promotion in the capital. The 27-year-old is not wary of giving politically incorrect answers and here's what she had to say about her upcoming movie 'Revolver Rani'. Read an excerpt from her interview given to IBNLive.com.

Your role seems to be quite interesting in 'Revolver Rani', can you shed some more light on your character in the movie?

The role of Alka Gujjar has been changed to Alka Singh because of the elections, so that we don't hurt any sentiments. The character is very interesting. She is an MLA and has a criminal record. The time I signed this movie, I asked Kabir that how can she be a murderer if she is a politician and Kabir showed me a list of politicians who had a criminal record.

What do you have to say about your director Sai Kabir, who is just two movies old?

There are only few directors who can laugh at their own story and Kabir's story is one of them. It's a funny, quirky take that's rarely seen in our movies. It's a new subject and the movies that we see these days are just based on almost the same subject, and the trend is continuing from past 10 to 15 years, only the face changes. Our cinema, I think is regressive, because our new filmmakers don't get enough opportunities and even if they get, they only grab it by following the same old concept. A budding moviemaker like him should be given enough opportunities and more producers should come up sponsoring such movies. We are planning to publish a novel on 'Revolver Rani'- named 'Revolver Rani Ka Badla'. And there would be sequels to it as well.

You have worked with Raj Kumar Rao, who recently bagged a National Award for 'Shahid', how was it working with him and what do you have to say about his achievement?

He is very good, 'Shahid' was very well deserved. It's nice to see our government felicitating real, genuine talent and people who are doing so well at this early stage of their career. And Raj is very gifted and talented, we wish him for his achievement.

Is Kangana Ranaut expecting a National Award for her stellar performance in 'Queen'?

Well, you see awards have never been my priority and I think, I have spoken a lot about it earlier.

There is this peculiar Michael Jackson track in the movie, so is it a tribute to the legend?
