With a crumpled face, dyspeptic demeanour and gruffly disapproving scowl, Warren Clarke found unlikely fame as a politically incorrect Northern detective superintendent saddled with a liberally minded Southern university graduate sidekick in Dalziel and Pascoe.

Over the course of 12 series across 11 years from 1996, Clarke humanised the chauvinist copper in a performance of nuanced directness underpinned by winningly sly wit. The role showcased an unerring ability to imbue even the most unsympathetic characters with qualities that rendered them always watchable, if not always likeable.

The son of a stained-glass window maker and secretary, he left school at 15 to become a copy boy for the Manchester Evening News before involvement in amateur dramatics led him to the Liverpool Playhouse in 1966 to play Huckleberry Finn in Tom Sawyer.

Turning professional, early appearances in Liverpool over the next two years included Willis Halls The Long and the Short and the Tall, Ray Lawlers The Piccadilly Bushman and McCann in Pinters The Birthday Party.

At the Library Theatre, Manchester in 1967 he played Enobarbus in Antony and Cleopatra, and appeared in John McGraths Events While Guarding the Bofors Gun. He made his Royal Court debut in Tom Murphys Famine and Frank Normans prison drama Insideout (directed by Ken Campbell) in 1969.

The following year, Clarke was seen alongside John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson in David Storeys Home, transferring with it from the Royal Court to the Apollo Theatre.

Later Royal Court appearances included Sam Shepards The Unseen Hand (1973) and the Richard OBrien musical T.Zee (1976). In between, he appeared in the premiere of Anthony Shaffers Murderer at the Garrick Theatre (1975).

At the National Theatre in the late 1970s, Clarke appeared in Thomas Bernhards The Force of Habit (1976); Christopher Hamptons translation of Tales From the Vienna Woods; as Bonario to Paul Scofields Volpone (both 1977) and in Keith Dewhursts Lark Rise (1978).

Later stage work included Dennis in Ayckbourns Just Between Ourselves (Palace Theatre, Watford, 1986) and Winston Churchill (a role he also played in the 1974 television serial Jennie Lady Randolph Churchill) in Ben Browns Three Days in May at Londons Trafalgar Studios in 2011.

Pauline Hanson returns to lead One Nation

Posted: at 6:42 pm

Pauline Hanson has announced her return to the One Nation party to become its leader after a 12-year hiatus.

The serial candidate wants to win a Queensland seat and will prepare the party for next year's Queensland election.

On the day her ascent was announced, Ms Hanson has already taken a swipe at foreign ownership, Halal and multiculturalism.

She announced her comeback on One Nation's website, saying she would dare to raise issues which were politically incorrect.

"We are witnessing large amounts of our prime farming land and housing sold to foreign ownership," she said.

"The push for multiculturalism is only segregating us as a nation and not uniting us as Australians with the same values, beliefs and laws.

"Halal is being forced on us by 2 per cent of the population."

Speaking on television this morning, Ms Hanson said the party would stand candidates in the Queensland election, but not in NSW because it was not registered there.

Despite Hanson's aspirations, the party did not fare well in the last Queensland election in 2012.

Its six candidates got a combined total of 2,525 votes, just 0.1 per cent of votes.

Cry, D-Jax cry, you'll get no sympathy

LOOKS AS IF the Redskins have more problems than their politically incorrect nickname.

On Sunday, quarterback Robert Griffin III shared his frustration after a 20-point loss to the visiting Buccaneers that dropped the 'Skins to 3-7.

"It takes 11 men," said Griffin, who threw two interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown. "It doesn't take one guy, and that's proven. If you want to look at the good teams in this league and the great quarterbacks, the Peytons and the Aaron Rodgerses, those guys don't play well if their guys don't play well. They don't.

"We need everybody. I need every one of those guys in that locker room, and I know they're looking at me saying the same thing."

Can the Eagles beat the Packers in the playoffs?

If RG3 is throwing his teammates under the bus, then DeSean Jackson is driving it.

Yesterday, the former Eagles wide receiver took to Twitter to share a morale-shattering message.

"Top of the Week !! & this how I'm feeling !!," wrote D-Jax. The text was accompanied by an Instagram image that read: "You can't do epic [crap] with basic people."

No point attracting young generation to F1 – Ecclestone

Posted: at 4:41 am

Nov.14 (GMM) Bernie Ecclestone has ensured the world of Formula One on Friday will be discussing one thing -- his controversial views.

Amid collapsing teams and a so-called 'crisis' for his sport, the F1 supremo provided a diversion with a typically politically-incorrect interview for a publication called Campaign Asia-Pacific.

Now 84, the Briton once courted controversy by saying he admired Hitler, and he riled others by joking that women should be dressed white like other domestic appliances.

In Friday's interview, he said women "like to criticise", and likened collapsing backmarker teams to "ladies and credit cards".

I don't know what the so-called young generation of today really wants,

Bernie Ecclestone

And as Marussia and Caterham fight for survival, Ecclestone predicted nobody will miss them "at all" if they do fold.

"They've only got a name that people would know because of the problem they're in," said Ecclestone, comparing them the paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius who gained greater notoriety for the high-profile murder trial.

"Same with these two teams," said the F1 chief executive. "You need teams like Ferrari."

Arguably the most alarming comments, however, are about Ecclestone's attitude to social media, as he has been heavily criticised for not embracing the power of mediums like Facebook and Twitter.

'Suck Me Shakespeer' Helps Revive Fortunes at Germany's Constantin Medien

Posted: November 13, 2014 at 6:42 pm

A politically-incorrect school-days comedy has helped revive fortunes at German mini-major Constantin Medien, which saw sales in its film division jump nearly 25 percent in the first nine months of this year to $279 million (223.6 million).

The results were helped in no small measure by home entertainment revenues from hit German-language comedy Suck Me Shakespeer. The division turned a $7.5 million (6 million) profit after losing $2.5 million (1.9 million) in the same period last year.

Constantin, already a major player on the German TV production scene, is looking to go global with its small-screen business and is planning TV series based on several of its film franchises, including YA fantasy series The Mortal Instruments and sci-fi horror Resident Evil.

Overall, Constantin's nine month results showed a 14 percent jump in revenue to $451 million (361.6) and a net loss attributable to Constantin shareholders of $9.97 million (8 million). The company's sports division, which operates the network Sports1, saw some improvement over last year.

Constantin CEO Bernhard Burgener said the company had shown great progress, particularly in the digitalization of its traditional businesses.

Constantin boosted its full-year forecast and now expects losses attributable to shareholders of $8.7 million-$11 million (7 million - 9 million), down from $16 million-$18.7 million (13 million - 15 million). The company still expects to boost full-year revenue to $573 million-$623 million (460 million - 500 million).
