Larry Wilmore: 'Nightly Show' will blend 'Daily Show,' 'Politically Incorrect' formats
Posted: January 11, 2015 at 1:44 pm
If Larry Wilmore is nervous about the launch of "The Nightly Show" a week from Monday, he didn't show it during his Q&A Saturday at the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Pasadena, Calif.
Wilmore described the half-hour show that will fill 11:30 p.m. slot vacated by "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central as a hybrid of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "Politically Incorrect." The first half of the show will present a look at some key events of the day, while the second half will feature a roundtable discussion with a handful of participants that he promises will go "without a net."
"The panel discussion will deconstruct events," Wilmore said. "We'll have a nice balance of the scripted element and the non-scripted."
The show has a handful of contributors that will not serve as correspondents in the same way "Daily Show" features them -- Wilmore himself was the show's "senior black correspondent" for years -- but more as contributors of comedic bits and perspective.
Wilmore and "Nightly Show" exec producer Rory Albanese and head writer Robin Thede emphasized that the show aims to add a different perspective on news and events to latenight.
"I'm not interested in doing a show where I give my opinion and people react to my opinion. Our show is more about the discovery of things. I want people who will teach me something," he said. "We'll have people on who maybe get their minds changed" after discussing a particular issue.
Wilmore was of course asked about his reaction to the carnage in Paris this week after the killings of 12 members of the staff of satirical magazine Charlie Hedbo by extremists in retaliation for printing cartoons they deemed offensive to Islam.
"It's very tragic and I think we are all affected," Wilmore said, noting that his staff and the "Daily Show" team was rattled by the incident.
"They're starting to kill satirists just as a brother's launching his show," Wilmore said. "The timing of that is a bit scary." More seriously he observed, "I give those guys in France a lot of credit for the type of courage" they demonstrate with their publication.

Wilmore readying new show for Comedy Central – Quincy Herald-Whig | Illinois & Missouri News, Sports

By DAVID BAUDER AP Television Writer
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Larry Wilmore says that his new "Nightly Show" launching on Comedy Central later this month will be like a hybrid of "The Daily Show" and "Politically Incorrect," combining comic observations and a topical panel discussion.
Wilmore's half-hour show, which will air at 11:30 p.m. EST on weeknights following Stewart's "Daily Show," is replacing "The Colbert Report" with Stephen Colbert headed to CBS. Unlike the star of "The Colbert Report," Wilmore will be himself, and not play a character.
"It may be comic, it may be provocative," Wilmore told reporters at a television conference on Saturday. "Who knows? It will go where it goes."
Celebrities will be part of the mix, "but they won't be hawking books and movies," he said. He'll begin test shows next week in anticipation of a Jan. 19 premiere.
Wilmore, 53, is a comic veteran with extensive experience both onstage and behind the scenes, most recently developing the ABC comedy "black-ish." He's known to Comedy Central viewers as the "senior black correspondent" on "The Daily Show." He jumped at the chance for the new show when Stewart suggested it, somewhat surprised at his age to be getting the opportunity.
It was initially called "The Minority Report," but was changed after Fox raised complications because it is preparing a show with the same name. "Meet the Rest" was briefly considered before they settled on "The Nightly Show."
"If you're watching 'The Daily Show' and it feels like it's getting a little darker, it's probably 'The Nightly Show,'" he said.
Some 417 people applied to be writers on "The Nightly Show" before Wilmore and Executive Producer Rory Albanese settled on 10. Wilmore said he was looking for people who would challenge him.
"I already have my voice," he said. "I don't want to have a roomful of people who are going to reflect me."

The Long, Strange, Impossible Journey That Brought Archer to Television
Posted: at 9:43 pm
Really, the best way to get a gig that eventually lands you in the driver's seat of the funniest show on TV is to walk into Turner headquarters in Atlanta looking like a drunken vagrant. (Take note, aspiring showrunners.)
At least, that's how it worked for Adam Reed, creator of FX's hilarious animated workplace sitcom Archer, a show that follows the exploits of a womanizing, politically incorrect jerk not too dissimilar from James Bond. It's also one of the best-written series on the air.

A North Carolina native with an affinity for British humorist P. G. Wodehouse and a knack for a good yarn, Reed both writes and acts on the show. In fact, he has, at minimum, cowriter credit on every episode and sole writing credit on most of them. It's a labor of love, and its origin stories are as funny and strange as anything Archer has managed to do for over the course of its soon-to-be-six seasons.
As the show prepares to return Thursday at 10 p.m., we met up with Reed to learn his backstory and, subsequently, the origin of Sterling Archer.
Adweek: We're big Archer fans over here. How did you get into the industry?
Adam Reed: I sort of fell backwards into TV. My sister got me a job at Turner Broadcasting after college, and one of the first things I had to do working for the marketing department was watch every episode of The Flintstones and take notes. So I watched all 164 episodes of The Flintstones.
And that damaged you permanently, and now you're seeking revenge on the world?
Exactly. So then at that department I was known as the guy who knew The Flintstones and that led to my working on a Flintstones home video. And then somehow because of that I took a writing test for Cartoon Network and got a job there in their on-air department. And worked there for a while and then left, and then when we left my partner Matt Thompson and I stole all the master tapes for the original Sealab 2020. And we were living in New York and were out of work and so we sat down and cut a pilot for what became Sealab 2021 and sent it to Cartoon Network over the transom and then Mike Lazzo called and said, hey, we're starting this thing called Adult Swim and your show is just weird enough to be on there.
When did you decide you wanted to pitch FX?

Revlon CEO says he can "smell black people" - Jews, black and racism
This is an interesting conversation that I had with Susan Patton, aka "The Princeton Mom." Susan is interesting because she is just as politically incorrect as I am, and is not afraid to disagree...
