Shoaib Akhtar was recently blasted for mocking the Pakistan cricket team on 'Comedy Nights with Kapil', a slapstick Indian television show which is popular in both India and Pakistan for the Bollywood celebs and crass jokes it has to offer.

A short video clip of the show where Shoaib unabashedly joked about the age and poor English language skills of senior Pakistani players and officials caused a viral stir on social media.

If we add up Misbah's, Younis' and Afridi's ages, this team will itself be 150 years old, Shoaib says, as the audience bursts into laughter. He brought up the Shabbir Ahmed slip-of-tongue the "moisturiser" slip we have all heard about and laughed at. He giggled while Harbhajan Singh called Inzi lazy.

The internet may not have broken over his statements, but chest-thumping patriots' hearts did; from National Pride-Keeper Fakhr-e-Alam to Politically-Correct Umer Sharif and like-minded fellows on social media, plenty of scorn was heaped on Shoaib.

How dare he ridicule Pakistan on an Indian show?

For those who haven't heard of the show, or wonder how popular it really is with our audience, this randomly selected clip of the show, featuring Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan (actor, not cricketer), has a whopping 95,000 plus views.

Go figure. Most of us enjoy some cheap entertainment; the mindless, politically-incorrect 'fat' jokes; gender shaming and mock bullying that makes up a big chunk of Indian and Pakistani comedy.

If people are offended by Shoaib, chances are they are also ashamed to look at themselves in the mirror. Because many, in fact, most of us have not pulled any punches when it comes to making fun of, for instance:

The list is unending. As is the hypocrisy.

In fact, it is doubly ironic that someone like Umer Sharif is "disowning" Shoaib over his statements, considering he has in the past verbally destroyed Adnan Sami Khan over his weight and gone as far as making jibes at a handicapped character during his stage-shows.

Has Nickelback made worst song, video of all time?

Posted: at 8:43 pm

Just when you thought Nickelback couldn't get any worse, they have delivered one of the worst songs and video clips ever produced by a major label.

Or one of the best, if you think Chad Kroeger and co. just might be satirical geniuses.

Ladies and gentleman, Nickelback have gone disco-funk, with the breathtakingly cheesy and sleazyShe Keeps Me Up, an abomination so politically incorrect it views like a horrific window into one of Kroeger's dreams.

Just ponder the chorus, although you have been warned: for all its awfulness it is an earworm. "Funky little monkey / she's a twisted trickster / everybody wants to be the sister's mister / coca cola rollercoaster / love her even though I'm not supposed to."

Where to start? Even if you forget the hair-rock overtones of forbidden interracial love, the ham-fisted product placement, the clunky and try-hard rhyming it is absolute nonsense and sounds so utterly disposable the cola drink mentioned could be an aged fine wine by comparison.

Then there's the deeply creepy clip, which begins with two preppy young women being invited into a low profile club by a bouncer with the words "come on children". Inside they join dozens of girls because that's what they are joyously dancing to Chad and the boys, besuited, all in dark glasses, playing funk riffs that sound borrowed from sound FX CDs produced in 1988.

Throughout, a grotesquely grinning Kroeger sings lines to the girls like "she smells just like a flower" and "I love when she says 'what's wrong with right here on the counter'". Then a young black singer taunts him with "I keep you up", to which the Kroeger agrees "she keeps me up".

No, nooooooo.

Or it could all be an extreme exercise in self-parody. You decide. But either way, once viewed this cannot be unseen.

Honey, we shrank the SUV and Europe loves it

Posted: at 9:43 pm

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) In Europe, SUV now stands for: Shrinking Utility Vehicle.

An array of small sport utility vehicles is going on display this week at the Geneva International Motor Show. Automakers are piling into the segment as one of the best hopes for growth in a still-weak European market.

Consumers like the higher seating, easier entry and perceived greater freight-carrying capacity. Auto makers like the fact that they can build an SUV body on the same mechanical platforms and modules they use for compact cars, saving money on development costs.

The key in Europe has turned out to be putting the vehicles on platforms originally built for compact or small mid-sized cars. They're generally less than 4.5 meters (177 inches) long, or smaller than a Honda Civic, which measures 4.54 meters (179.4 inches.)

Compact SUVs have gained in popularity globally, but they're really getting attention now in Europe. The smaller size helps with narrow streets and tight parking in European cities that made full-size SUVs less practical for many people, and a little politically incorrect as well for the more environmentally-conscious. The recently lower price of gasoline will not hurt, although gas remains painfully expensive in Europe compared with the United States due to high taxes.

At the Geneva show, among the top new contenders is the Renault Kadjar, which blends the more rugged SUV style with cues from cars and station wagons, such as a lower roofline and comfortable interior, in a small, 4.45-meter package. The Kadjar (pronounced KA-jar) is headed for the European market this summer and China after that, with Renault saying it's too early for price information.

Hyundai's redesigned Tucson has grown slightly but is only a fraction longer at 4.47 meters (176.2 inches.)

In the higher priced realm, Infiniti is showing off its QX30 concept vehicle, which keeps the higher stance of an SUV and uses carbon fiber cladding and large 21-inch wheels with milled aluminum spokes. Infiniti says the design is intended to make occupants feel safe and protected; it has a pronounced front bumper and a large skid plate to protect the rear.

The QX30 aims at one of the problems of the segment's popularity: how to distinguish one's entrant from all the others. The QX30, which will be introduced as a production vehicle in 2016, tries to do this with bold styling; it has sharp metal curves and flares that stand out.

"We want to come to the market with a different offer," said Francois Goupil de Bouille, Infiniti's vice-president for Europe, Middle East, Russia and Africa. "So what we are going to do is come with a striking design."
