Erick Werner: Never OK to use political violence – Santa Clarita Valley Signal
Posted: April 28, 2017 at 2:34 pm
In 1941 the U.S. declared war on Nazi Germany. By 1945 that regime, and its adherents, had been wholly wiped away.
It is interesting, then, that in 2017 the question has come up: Is it OK to punch a Nazi? The answer for many has been Yes, it certainly is OK.
However, the fundamental issue with this logic falls in line with the fact that because there are no longer any real, official Nazis anymore, then simply applying that label to anyone you disagree with gives you carte blanche to use violence to silence that persons views.
The topic itself came up when white nationalist and head of the National Policy Institute Richard Spencer was assaulted on Inauguration Day in Washington, D.C. While giving an on-the-street interview with ABC, a member of the Antifa black bloc ran up and sucker-punched Spencer.
Now, for those unfamiliar with the group, Antifa stands for Anti-Fascist and is a group that has been operating as a far-left protest and riot organization that has grown considerably in the United States.
A fair amount of the destruction caused in recent protests on college campuses has been due to the actions of Antifa.
So when an Antifa member hit Richard Spencer, the conversation that ensued was not one of condemnation, but one in which people legitimately questioned whether the blow was socially acceptable. Organizations like the Guardian published videos advocating for this kind of behavior.
The fact of the matter is that for a representative Jeffersonian democracy to work, political violence must be shunned at every level, no matter how ignorant or misguided an individuals views are.
To be certain, I have disagreements with Richard Spencer and do not advocate his style of holistic identitarianism. However, if I met him in a crowd, I would much rather have a debate, rather than a fight.
Richard Spencer aside, however, let us assume the position of the left that implicitly or explicitly justifies political violence if it is targeted at a Nazi.
What in 2017 constitutes a Nazi? The SS has been a defunct organization since 1945, and even George Lincoln Rockwell has been dead since the late 1960s. How, then, would someone identify a modern Nazi?
Critics might cite Neo-Nazis who come out of prison gangs, of course, but lets be honest with ourselves those guys arent the people who are in any threat of being targeting for political violence. They are not the individuals that Antifa and those supporting the group are advocating violence against.
No, Antifa and the authoritarian left is decidedly bringing back the label Nazi as a way to justify violence against those they deem politically incorrect.
The punching of Richard Spencer was just one of many assaults on supposed Fascists though certainly a well-documented one due to his prominence.
Many dozens, if not hundreds, of other assaults have taken place at an alarming rate over the past year or so, and the trend does not seem to be letting up.
Make no mistake, this is the degeneracy of the American political system, and it is being spurred on by turning something that was once a well-defined, and frankly archaic, political party into a catch-all for those deemed conservative or on the political right.
These people do not want to listen and debate; they want to brutalize and punish.
In a sense, they are forgoing their civic duty as it was visualized by our Founding Fathers. Every enfranchised person should, theoretically, be an informed advocate of his or her political opinions.
These people are using the privilege of protest allotted by this country to silence opposition.
As we continue to move forward, there will no doubt continue to be more such events. To save the American political process, we must unmask these Antifa rioters and hold accountable those who grant their implicit support.
Only then will we be able to once more stand united and strong.

Radhika Vaz on being unabashedly politically incorrect – Femina
Posted: April 27, 2017 at 1:34 am
Radhika Vaz, who can make even the most straitlaced women and men guffaw at her ribald, unladylike take on everything from sexual identity to virginity and body hair, believes that its important to speak up in a country where a majority of women are asked to shut up the minute they express an opinion. Who else will tell our stories? The only reason feminism has taken root in so many countries is because of loud, proud politically incorrect women, who have stopped caring about what anyone thinks of them, she says.
Vaz, for one, stopped bothering about conforming to norms when she gave up a safe corporate job to become a stand-up comic, first in the US and then in India. I have never been politically correct. The moment I have felt the need to say or do the right thing, I have instinctively known its the wrong thing for me personally. Its just the right thing for whoever put the rules in place.
Challenging norms also meant playing with fire without being afraid of the consequences. But Vaz, who went naked on stage a couple of years ago to make a point about the objectification of women, has learnt to walk the tightrope with ease. Of course, people have gotten offended, but I have never felt threatened or got into serious troublenot yetbut that does not mean other women have not had that experience, she says. One time, someone tried to get a venue to cancel my show. The only reason I believe he didnt get very far was because he didnt try hard enough!
The writer and performer of Older.Angrier. Hairier and Unladylike, feels that our freedom of speech is being threatened like never before. We have never really had freedom of expression. There is not a radio station in India that wont give you the no-politics-no-religion brief. And its not their faultour government couldnt care less and if the station is attacked, the police cant and wont handle it. Freedom is a group effort. It takes a village to raise a child and it takes the whole damn country to then protect this child, she says.
Vaz expresses her views not just through her shows but also on social media like Twitter, which means that she has to deal with her fair share of trolls. The comedienne, however, is more than equipped to deal with it. I deal with trolls by being utterly obnoxious. They call me shameless, I get more shameless. They want me to talk nicely, well, I wont! Trolls are not the same as people who disagree with your point of view; they are pretty stupid people who have even less to do with their lives than I do with mineso in the grand scheme of things they are like an annoying in-law. You have to ignore them.

Trump Aims To Limit The Education Department’s Influence In New Order – Huffington Post
Posted: at 1:34 am
President Donald Trumpissued anexecutive orderon Wednesday that seeks to reduce federal intervention in education. It builds on vows he made during the campaign to dismantle the Common Core State Standards and hand greater control of schools back to states and localities.
But initially, at least, the order doesnt do much.
The order directs Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to identify examples of federal overreachin her bailiwick, senior Education Department official Rob Goad said on a call with reporters. For the next 300 days, DeVos and a team of department staffers will analyze regulations and guidance to determine whether they legally overstep the departments authority.
For too long the federal government has imposed its will on state and local governments. The result has been education that spends more and achieves far, far, far less. My administration has been working to reverse this federal power grab, Trump said on Wednesday.
Jonathan Ernst/Reuters
Its not clear what policies Education Department officials will actually finger, and a federal lawpassed in late 2015 already returns a degree of education power to the states. But some of Trumps supporters are hoping the administration acts quickly to roll back the federal governments support of Common Core, as well as Obama-era guidance related to students civil rights.
TheCommon Core standardsare a set of education benchmarks that the Obama administration incentivized states to adopt. They were designed to make sure that kids received similar schooling across state lines. Conservatives, however, have rallied against them as an example of federal interference in local schools. During his campaign, Trump repeatedly said he would work to erase them.
Jane Robbins, a senior fellow with the conservative American Principles Project, has long advocated an end to Common Core. Although she has recently been critical of Trumps seeming abandonment of the issue, she is optimistic about the new executive order.
I think its a very good first step. It indicates to me that all of the encouragement the grassroots have given to President Trump not to abandon his campaign promises on education have had some effect,Robbins said.
Because Common Core was adopted at the state level, the federal government cant simply dismantle the system. Many states have been teaching kids under these learning benchmarks for several years now.
As for students civil rights, some conservative- and libertarian-leaning lawyers have been pushing DeVos to rescind Obama-era guidance on the matter. The Trump administration has alreadyrescinded guidancethat provided protections for transgender students.
Roger Clegg, president and general counsel at the Center for Equal Opportunity, has been pressuring the Trump administration to re-examine guidance related to student punishments. In 2014, the Education Department warned that it would initiate investigations into school districts with severe racial disparities in student discipline. Those disparities need not be the result of direct discrimination to warrant examination, the guidance states.
Studies have shown that black students are suspended more frequently than white students, even for the same offenses.
In late March, Clegg wrote to the administration calling for withdrawal of that directive.
It is bad policy because it means that perfectly legitimate school discipline polices can be struck down or abandoned because they have politically incorrect statistical results, said Clegg on Tuesday, before the new executive order had been announced.
Clegg said he has reason to believe the administration is taking his concerns seriously.
I think in the long term, a reason we have these disparities is because of the fact that unfortunately there are a higher percentage of discipline problems in some racial and ethnic groups than other racial and ethnic groups. Its not anything genetic; its cultural, said Clegg, pointing to the disparities in out-of-wedlock birth rates between black and white families.
However, Catherine Brown of the progressive Center for American Progress thinks the executive order may not result in any significant changes.
I think its kind of silly. I feel like its purely symbolic, said Brown. I think hes just trying to get as many executive orders before the first 100 days so he could claim it as credit.

A Political Performance Arsonist – Huffington Post

My freshman roommate at Cornell in 1981 pasted a picture of a blonde coed on his wall one day.
"Who's that?" I asked half curiously and half condescendingly.
"She's a beautiful, conservative goddess who lives in U-Hall 6 across the way," he answered.
That was my first introduction to a noxious young woman named Ann Coulter, who continues to make waves now, more than three decades since I last saw her.
We would later become drinking partners, going to local bars and debating politics. We came from opposite ends of the political spectrum and although I found almost all her views repugnant, she was fun to verbally joust with.
Even then she had a flair for the extremely politically incorrect remark that was meant to shock more than inform. Once, one of her verbal bombs forced me to pour my bottle of beer in her lap in mock anger.
We lost touch in the late 1980s, in our mid-20s, but like many I have watched the arc of her so-called career as a political arsonist with half fascination and half disgust.
It's hard to know where to start in listing some examples of her offensive views. But here goes:
In 2012, she said on Fox News that "single women look to the government to be their husbands and give them, you know, prenatal care, and preschool care and kindergarten care and school lunches."
Wow. That is wrong on so many levels that it's not worthy of some old-fashioned moral outrage.
Or how about this: in 2015, she said, "If you don't want to be killed by ISIS, don't go to Syria. If you don't want to be killed by a Mexican, there's nothing I can tell you."
Remind you of someone who recently moved to Washington, D.C.?
And now comes news that Madame Coulter is stirring up an old fashioned campus riot at the University of California at Berkeley. She was invited to speak by the campus Young Republicans but university officials are trying to postpone her speech because the police have "very specific intelligence of threats that could pose danger to the speaker."
Well, this is a real complicated one. Like almost any thoughtful American, I firmly believe in free speech as protected by the 1st Amendment. The idea that Coulter has been threatened is also repugnant to me -- even if I strongly object to her views and the way she expresses them, we should fight vigorously for her right to speak.
It is people like her -- and her media enablers like Rupert Murdoch -- who paved the way for DC gridlock, the Tea Party, Donald Trump and his minority band of Trumpists. They will have to live with the consequences of their actions. History will not be kind to them.
But in the meantime, go ahead and peacefully protest her speech, ask piercing questions afterwards and let Coulter's self-serving xenophobia be on full display so that we can rebut her untruths and slanders.
Pouring that beer in her lap may have been one of the most intellectually honest things I've done.

Despite councilman’s misgivings, Reagan statue belongs in the Civic Center – Los Angeles Times
Posted: at 4:33 am
In his diary, President Ronald Reagan was quoted as saying, If youre explaining, youre losing. Newport Beach Councilman Jeff Herdmans April 17 letter, Reagan statue influenced my vote on arts package, is proof that Reagan was right.
In 2011, private funds were raised by former Councilman Keith Curry for a statue of Reagan in Newport Beach. Led by a column written by former Daily Pilot Editor Bill Lobdell, the Democrat-dominated Newport Beach City Arts Commission objected, arguing the process was circumvented because they are responsible for determining appropriate art in Newport.
President Reagans opponents went nuts when Curry suggested locating it at the new Civic Center. The council blinked. The beautiful, bronze statue was eventually dedicated in late 2011, in a dark cul-de-sac near a public bathroom, where it was later vandalized.
Recently, Mayor Kevin Muldoon and the current City Council voted 5-1 to relocate Reagan's statue to the Civic Center. Herdman opposed the move because there were just too many unanswered questions.
Sound familiar? Imagine if President Reagan had taken Herdmans wait-and-see position when he broke the back of Communism.
Mike Schroeder
Newport Beach
The writer is past chairman of the California Republican Party.
Wow, the recall effort is only a few weeks old, and already Councilman Scott Peotter has had four positions. First, he said the recall was to inhibit his free speech. When one considers that Peotters own extraordinary efforts to prevent residents from circulating petitions on the Museum House project was the greatest denial of free speech in recent city history, that argument quickly went away.
Then he said it was about him keeping his promises to cut city spending. But the record shows that under Peotter, pension liabilities and the operating budget are up millions and we now run the sewer system at a structural deficit.
Next he hooked up with Democrat Bob Rush as his chairman and claimed he was being recalled because he was politically incorrect. Well yes, not publicly opposing the racist Farsi campaign signs targeting former candidate Fred Ameri, opposing the city sexual harassment prevention policy and insulting residents who speak before the council is politically incorrect, but it is also unacceptable behavior as a member of the City Council.
Who knows what Peotters slogan will be tomorrow? Here are some we know he wont be using: Scott Peotter: Working to reduce traffic and improve our quality of life, Scott Peotter: champion of parks and libraries, Scott Peotter: He respects the public.
Its time for a change on the City Council.
Richard C. Ingold
Newport Beach
The California Budget for 2012 was $90 billion. The California Budget for 2017 is $122.5 billion. Our water infrastructure is no better, the roads are still in disrepair and there has been no improvement to our education system.
My question is where is our media? Every time I open the Los Angeles Times, there is nothing but praise for Gov. Jerry Brown and the rest of our Democratic leaders.
Where is the accountability? When are our citizens going to finally hold our leaders accountable for their actions, or in our case, inaction?
By the way, our most recent tax increase is 12 cents a gallon for gas, and an additional $100 fee for electric cars, and surprise, the press is all for it. Way to go, our press and Gov. Brown, always looking out for the citizens of our great state.

How best to make this Anzac Day all about you – SBS
Posted: at 4:33 am
Ah, the spirit of the Anzacs. Lest we forget the men that died in a horrific war so that Australians may get absolutely blind and find every possible way to make the day about ourselves. Im about to continue this proud Australian tradition.
Each year the 25th of April brings new and exciting possibilities for brands, public figures and your mates down at the pub to say and do abhorrently distasteful things. Remember Woolworths bonkers lowering of the bar with last years whole Brandzac Day fiasco? Fresh in our memories. Champagne comedy.
Last year, you may remember the bikini-clad lass on the cover of the late Zoo Magazine (lest we forget) clutching a poppy. This year, the Daily Tele are clutching many, many pearls over advertising for a gay club night disgracing Anzac Day with a sexy bloke in a sailors hat. Theyve also concurrently got an editorial by Peta Credlin lamenting that the Anzacs didnt die for political correctness and us being in danger of overprescribing behaviour. Fascinating.
So make sure to stock up on delicious biscuits, line your stomach to pack it full of cheap piss, and get ready to be an absolute dickhead this Anzac Day. Heres how to best celebrate the loss of lives this April 25th.
If theres one thing the diggers did die for, its so that we may say this isnt what our diggers died for, when we dont like things other people are saying or doing. My granddad didnt die in the bloody war for this bloody politically correct easily offended nonsense society, except I dont want you to say anything offensive or politically incorrect today. Dont say anything offensive about diggers, who apparently died for our right to free speech on all the other days of the year. You know it makes sense.
Youll want all your friends to know you got up super early to be super respectful, so make sure to post a shitload of pictures, captioned with happy Anzac Day!. Dont take a single moment to think about why thats a little distasteful. And dont forget to hashtag it with Less we forget.
Its a public holiday ay, so head down to the local to smash at least 8 beers before 1pm, get into a physical fight with your mates over 2up. What better way to respect the memory of fallen soldiers? This is f**kin Straya. Love it or leave it.
Dont forget, Anzac Day is a sombre time to honour the fallen, appreciate their sacrifices for our country, and also get your social media team to craft some extremely relatable content to be scheduled for posting on the day. Just really milk that public holiday, regardless of what it represents. Clever puns based on the horrific devastation of war are definitely necessary.
Isnt war terrible? Doesnt the loss of life in war just seem so pointless, so cruel? Anyways, back to gross nationalism and mindlessly hating people from different cultures.

‘My politics have become more liberal’ – The Herald Bulletin
Posted: at 4:33 am
MUNCIE Ball State University sophomore Josh Auker became interested in politics as a middle-schooler.
It was around the time of Obamas first campaign that I really started to think about politics, Auker said. My history teacher was great about asking questions about current events and the current political race.
The 2015 Anderson High School grad's political views have changed since he began college. Auker previously leaned conservative, but his perspective shifted after he decided to pursue a degree in mathematics education.
My political persuasions have become more liberal in college, and I think that goes along with being an education major, Auker says. Donald Trump is all about privatizing education, and (Clinton) was for public funding. Education is an important issue to me.
Similarly, Aukers experience in a multicultural-education class altered his opinions about government welfare services.
Yes, they can be abused sometimes, but my eyes definitely have been opened on the subject because of that class, he explained.
For Auker, determining which candidate to support in the November election hinged less on the medias portrayal of the candidates and more on the party platforms.
I dont care to listen to the debates, he said. During the elections, I would get online and compare each sides political platforms the bare bones of their campaigns. I do think hearing how the candidates speak was important, though, especially in this election. Donald Trumps words were often politically incorrect, and that shows that rhetoric does matter.
Although Auker is disappointed by the popularity contest nature of the Trump and Clinton race, he believes the country is headed in a different direction rather than a purely negative one.
I do see benefits on both (liberal and conservative) sides, but sometimes those benefits dont outweigh the negatives, says Auker. I hope that people are seeing how this political election turned out and things change for the better when the next election comes around.

Game reviews: Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition – Irish Independent

Which is precisely why Bulletstorm in this remastered version again proves so entertaining, an unending gory stream of kills performed in as inventive a fashion as possible. Never mind the plot, nor the sweary (and frankly wearing) script, this is a shooter as competitive sport, urging you to employ imaginative and eye-wateringly gruesome executions instead of just, y'know, killing enemies.
The sci-fi settings may be familiar (yet beautifully remastered) but it's the riotous score system that sets Bulletstorm on fire - why waste a bullet on an enemy when you can yank him from behind cover with a whip, then impale his body on to a spiky cactus? Or slide-tackle a guy and shove him into a lethal electric fence?
Yes, it's juvenile. No, graphics aside, it hasn't changed an iota from the 2011 original. But this overlooked gem deserves a new audience. Just not for anyone under the age of 18.
They don't make 'em like this any more. That's exactly why a group of ex-Rare alumni made this retro platformer with help from Kickstarter. It fills a gap in the market for colourful collect-'em-ups just like Rare used to excel at in the N64 days - see Banjo-Kazooie et al.
Inside the world of Yooka-Laylee - populated by wacky characters (one is called, ahem, Trowzer Snake) spouting wisecracks and built from familiar 3D platforming blueprints - it's as if the last 20 years in gaming never happened. Nostalgic fans will lap it up, though, entranced by its winning mix of cute animation, gentle (and fiendish) platforming and genre tropes. Newcomers may feel justifiably irked by its slightly loose controls, wonky camera and the lack of clear direction.
Developers are still figuring out what works best in virtual reality and Fated attempts a movie-length storyline, earthed in Norse mythology, accompanied by some light interaction.
It works, to a point, thanks to a cartoonish World of Warcraft-aesthetic and some engaging character designs as you try to save your wife and daughter from vengeful giants. But the lack of meaningful gameplay undermines Fated's attractive 10 price point.

Check Out This Wild Mash-up Between ‘Rick And Morty’ And ‘Friends’ – Konbini US

In a universeof infinite possibilities and parallel realities, it is very possible, nay, it is necessary, that an outrageous and politically incorrect adult animated series should clash with the feel-good sitcom of the 1990s.
This seems, in any case, to be the premise behind the creation of YouTube user DandyDani, who came up with an improbable mash-up between Rick and Morty and the credits of uber-famous Friends. Having the two wacky characters invade other series appears to be trendy at the moment, as evidenced by the recent rejig of Better Call Saul.
The theme song, composed by The Rembrandts, starts and a plethora of Rick and Mortycharacters assails the screen, all wearing catchy nicknames. There's the Bad Guy, played by Squanchy the Cat, thenBatman, hiding under Birdperson's feathery headgear and even James Bond, Agent 007, AKAhitman Krombopulos Michael.
Our two heroes end up in catastrophic situations, obviously, while the narrator is struggling to count the number of Ricks present, as there are too many clones of the alcoholic scientist around.Thankfullythough,Rick and Mortymanage to evade Friends' Ugly Naked Guy, who's probably hiding somewhere in the Galactic Federation anyway.
The premiere of season 3 of Rick and Morty was unveiled on April 1, so logically you should soon be able to sip an absinth-based cocktail to celebrate their return. In the meantime, this nutty mash-up will make your day.

REVIEW: Kinky Friedman at Bethlehem’s Godfrey Daniels shows off … – Allentown Morning Call
Posted: at 1:59 am
Singer Kinky Friedman is best known for his biting 1970s songs of social satire, and the sold-out audience at Bethlehems Godfrey Daniels was treated to that during Friedmans concert Wednesday.
But the big surprise was that, between those songs and spates of uproarious, politically incorrect humor in the 85-minute show, Friedman wove wonderful songs that illuminated his 72-year-old life in perfectly traditional country, folk and Americana styles. And also showed how musically gifted Friedman is.
That was especially true of the four songs Friedman played from his upcoming first disc of new material in more than 40 years, Resurrected. Rather than jokey, they were insightful, contemplative commentaries on a waning life.
Me and My Guitar was a study on a musicians life. Saying Goodbye, played as a guitar duo with Joe Cirotti, was a bittersweet rumination on life.
Even the lightheartedly titled new Jesus in Pajamas was, far more than satire, a statement on how to treat the least among us. And Friedman gave it gravitas, with his raspy, slightly gravelly voice.
Friedman, dressed in all black with his signature black cowboy hat, just as he did when he was part of Bob Dylans Rolling Thunder Revue tour or playing on Saturday Night Live in the 1970s, served notice early what the 12-song show would be like.
He opened, solo on acoustic guitar, with a straight-forward reading of Woody Guthries Pretty Boy Floyd itself a stinging commentary on what constitutes an outlaw: Some will rob you with a six-gun, and some with a fountain pen.
And his second song, his 1973 tune Sold American, was equally serious sung soft and sad, with its lesson of fleeting fortunes perhaps even more true today than it was almost 45 years ago.
That and other older songs Friedman did showed how insightful his older songs were. His 1976 song Lady Yesterday was surprisingly sweet and nostalgic probably more applicable to Friedmans present age than the 32-year-old who wrote it all that time ago.
Even a mid-set singsong reading he did, Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis, while softly accompanied by Cirotti, had a serious streak to its silliness.
All of that is not to say Friedmans show was a dour affair. Quite the opposite, it was consistently laugh-out-loud funny, starting after the second song, when Friedman a famously failed candidate for governor of Texas explained the meaning of politics: Poly, meaning more than one and tics, which are blood-sucking insects.
His between-song jokes were frequent nine minutes of material early in the show and frequently blue, but always with a reserved, intelligent delivery. The more sophisticated the crowd, the better that works, Friedman said. Some of the best were ribald doctor jokes he said were from friend Willie Nelson.
Material suited for general readership included the fact that he connected with Canadian singer Ann Murry who sold 55 million records and loved his new material after she retired. And a stab at evangelicals who use references to Gods will to escape responsibility for good or bad.
In that vein Friedman said he thinks Jesus wants a skinny guy traveling around the country irritating people.
And far from all of Friedmans songs were serious.
He played his politically incorrect even more so today huts Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed, with an audience member playing kazoo (We should take you on the fking road, he told the man) and They Aint Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore, which he introduced by telling a politically incorrect joke about where the phrase Jesus Loves You isnt comforting.
Political correctness has infested everything, Friedman said. Ive done my part.
His cover of Warren Zevons My Sh-ts Fked Up was as humorous as it was ominous, which is the point of the song.
Friedman even auctioned off bottles of his Man in Black tequila, with other memorabilia, to the audience (he got sales of $350 from three people) with proceeds going to his Utopia Rescue Ranch animal shelter in Texas.
But Friedman regrettably skipped his biggest hit, Ahole from El Paso, his wildly racist parody of Merle Haggards Okie From Muskogee.
And he wound down his show with serious, full-band covers of Johnny Cashs Pickin Time and Tom Paxtons Ramblin Boy, both well done, and his new Zoey, a sweet love song.
And they showed that, for all his talent with humor, Friedman is perhaps even more talented musically.
