In-Person and Virtual Science Camps in New York

The DNALC is the world's first science center devoted entirely to genetics education. We offer fun and challenging camps for science enthusiasts entering 6th12th grades. Guided by experienced instructors, students use sophisticated laboratory and computer equipment to perform experiments several grade levels ahead of their peers.

While our centers closed temporarily to the public in March 2020, the DNALC has continued to offer academic summer camps virtually. Now, we are welcoming back students in-person and virtually to join the fun while engaging in a high-level scientific lab experience. For more details, be sure to review our Camp Info.

In-person summer programs at our new facility in Brooklyn New York include hands-on labs that give learners the opportunity to use modern molecular biology techniques and tools. Students can join camps like Fun with DNA or Genome Science.

Wherever you attend, we have taken necessary precautions to ensure classmates and educators stay safe as we continue offering our in-person camps and courses throughout the summer (See our COVID-19 Safety Net).

Our virtual camps are offered two ways: live instruction, where students attend camp from home alongside a class of students, and On-Demand with pre-recorded daily lessons and materials so students can complete the curriculum at their own pace. These virtual science camps can be taken by middle or high school students anywhere, including outside of the NYC and Long Island areas.

To replicate the same hands-on science and enrichment learning, students attending virtually will also receive kits that contain any needed lab materials, camp-specific workbooks, and learning protocols. Students will also have access to a DNALC educator so they can share their lab results, ask questions, or troubleshoot labs.

One major question for the human mind is how life continues. One of the most important mechanisms for all life cells to give offsprings is undoubtedly the DNA Replication. DNA Replication answers to the question: "When a cell divides, where the extra DNA comes from?". What "DNA Replication" is? It is the process that can duplicate the DNA of a cell. The next step is the cell to duplicate!Every cell (of eukaryotes or prokaryotes) has one or more DNA (or RNA) polymer molecules that need to duplicate in order the cell duplication to take place. This is what DNA Replication -aka DNA Synthesis- succeeds.

In the eukaryotes (organisms with cell that have nucleus) the DNA is formed in two strands, each composed of units called Nucleotides. The two strands look like two chains that form the DNA Double Helix. The DNA Replication Process is capable of opening the Double Helix and separating the two strands. Then the two strands are copied. As a result two new DNA molecules are created. The next step is the cell division. After that a daughter cell is created. In its nucleus lies a copy of the parental DNA.

At least 5 trillion cell divisions are required for a fertilized egg to develop into an adult human, resulting in the production of more than 20 trillion meters of DNA! And yet, with only two exceptions, the genome is replicated once and only once each time a cell divides. How is this feat accomplished? What happens when errors occur? This book addresses these questions by presenting a thorough analysis of the proteins and sequence of events that govern DNA replication in all eukaryotic cells and by revealing linkages between DNA replication, cell proliferation, human disease, and targeted therapeutics. For example, at least 160 different proteins are involved in replicating the human genome, and 80 genetic diseases result either from mutations in these proteins or from errors in DNA replication or repair. In addition, more than 40 diseases result from replication of DNA viruses, and at least 14 therapeutic drugs are targeted to DNA replication proteins. 2. Collect the DNA sampleSwab. There are 2 mouth swabs for each test particpant. To obtain the required DNA samples, rub the cotton end of the swab inside the left cheek firmly at least 20 times. Repeat with the second swab on the inside of the left cheek.For guidance, see the video at: https://youtu.be/CTUFtkeGe1k

Air Dry. Both mouth swabs by rapidly flicking through the air for at least 15 seconds. Do not handle the cotton end, this will cause contamination of your DNA samples.

Seal. Place the swabs into the relevant test particpants sample envelope. Ensure all details are completed on the sample envelope and secure the 2 swabs by sealing the flap.

3. Mail back your DNA samplesPlace the sample envelopes, completed forms and payment into the return envelope supplied (no postage required). Seal the return envelope with the security seal provided.

Your DNA Test results will be sent to you within 3-5 working days from the date the laboratory receives the samples.

IMPORTANT. It may be a criminal offence under the Humun Tissue Act 2004, to have bodily material with the intention to analyse human DNA in the material and use the result for certain purposes without qualifying content.

As I said before football gives you an opportunity. Hes in a good place right now and hes very hungry to do something.

Well everything affects but you have to come through that. Its about how you react to the difficulties in your career which youre going to have at some stage. He had some this season and its about showing the direction and the capacity to overcome that.

What do you believe the Arsenal DNA to be? There have been some suggestions this week that has gone from the club.

Well, our DNA is related to many factors. First the history that we have, how we represent our values, our togetherness in what it is the team, what is the plan and what we are trying to transmit to the world with that. I believe that what we are trying to do is very much linked to that.

There is still things to do, yes, but there was always this. This game is evolving, this club is evolving. This club is not the same as 20 years ago. Its all the time something you have to embrace but at the same time evolve

Thierry Henry said those qualities are long gone. Is that true?

I said that there a fundamental things that we have to recover and its in our hands to do that. I think that is a responsibility for a lot of people. Not just the team, not just the board not just the owners but everybody that loves, really loves, this football club.

The club has been in Europe in every season since the 95/96 season. How important, in terms of both prestige and finance, is getting back into Europe for you next season?

Well, I think it gives you the platform, visually first, as you mentioned, and then because its related to our history and the demands that this club has got. Then because obviously financially the way to attract sponsors, to attract players, to improve your squad and to compete for the big trophies you have to be in Europe. Thats the challenge weve got ahead of us.

Throughout your time as a player and a manager how much does Arsenals ability to pull out important results give you confidence they could do the same again tomorrow night?

Well, weve got experience from the past. Weve got experience from this season in many ways. The last one in Villarreal when we were in a really difficult position, 2-0 down and with 10 men but we still managed to push something out. We have a big shot tomorrow.

Some players are likely to leave the club at the end of the season. Have those decisions been made already or are there some players with whom it depends on their performances in these final games of the season?

A lot of things can change for many different reasons. Something is a plan and then a plan for someone that you think is going to stay for a reason that happens and it changes. So, its very difficult to predict 100% that plan is going to be what you expect it to be what you said.

What will you do differently in tomorrows game compared to last week?

Well, the way we started the game thats for sure. We did some things that we didnt talk about. We conceded an early goal that I think was difficult to swallow. It took us a little while to react and I think we had a difficult period. How we handled both boxes. And the discipline. To play with 11 players in this competition is key and we didnt manage to do that. When we do all the things that we have to do the game will be completely different.

"Confirmed with DNA" is a relationship status level that indicates a parent-child relationship has been supported by DNA testing in addition to traditional genealogical research. Using it means this icon will appear by fathers and mothers on profiles and most tree views:

This indicator should only be used when the specific parent-child relationship has been carefully confirmed using a method described on the DNA Confirmation page and a source citation like the examples on the DNA Confirmation page is added to the child's profile.

If there isn't a proper source citation the "Confirmed with DNA" relationship status should be changed (by you or another member) to "Confident".

Confirmation is not absolute proof. Major caveats include:

"Confirmed with DNA" cannot be used if the genealogy is incomplete. If a DNA testing company estimates that you're a close match with someone else, you can be fairly confident that you and your match share a common ancestor in a genealogical time frame. However, you may not know the identity of the common ancestor, or you may not be confident about each link in the chain of parent-child relationships back to the common ancestor.

This is very common. It's likely to be the case with most of your matches.

"Confirmed with DNA" should only be selected after using one of the methods described on the DNA Confirmation page.

If a relationship is supported with DNA evidence but cannot be considered confirmed using one of the approved methods use the Confident status instead of Confirmed with DNA.

It's recommended that you still follow the basic source citation format described on the DNA Confirmation page when using a DNA test match as a source on a profile, even if the relationship is not confirmed. You may also wish to use a === DNA === subsection under the == Biography == with a full explanation.

The Relationship Status can be changed to Confirmed with DNA when more evidence is gathered through additional matches or if the current evidence is able to be more carefully analyzed.

In a DNA molecule, the two strands are not parallel, but intertwined with eachother. Each strand looks like a helix. The two strands form a "doublehelix" structure, whichwas first discovered by James D. Bacteria contain symmetry in their DNA signals that enable them to be read either forwards or backwards, according to new findings at the University of Birmingham which challenge existing knowledge about gene transcription.

In all living organisms, DNA code is divided into sections which provide information about a specific process. These must be read before the information can be used. Cells identify the start of each section using signposts, which scientists first identified in the 1960s.

It has always been assumed that these signposts enable genetic sequences to be read in a single direction. The new study, published in Nature Microbiology, however, shows that single-celled organisms have symmetrical DNA signposts. This means that the DNA code can be read in either direction.

Lead author, Professor David Grainger, explains: Most of the studies on gene signalling overlook the symmetry, but we think this is incredibly significant and represents a whole new level of regulating genes that has not yet been investigated.

The precise reasons for the two-directional reading are not yet clear and will require further investigation. One theory the team is considering is that it helps to avoid reading collisions with other sequences.

Although the current study focuses mainly on bacteria, the team speculate that the signpost symmetry is likely to be found in humans, animals and other organisms too. The next step for the research will be to investigate the phenomenon in yeast cells which more closely resemble human cells.

Professor Grainger adds: Understanding how genes are read is fundamental to many branches of biotechnology. Lots of medicines, for example, are dependent on being able to control how genes are read, so its important to fully understand how these signals work, and how we can use that knowledge to improve healthcare.
