Nelson to speak with Rogozin on the future of the ISS – SpaceNews

WASHINGTON NASA Administrator Bill Nelson says he will soon speak with his Russian counterpart in the hopes of continuing long-standing cooperation between the two countries in space even as Russias ties to China grow stronger.

In a discussion with reporters at NASA Headquarters after his State of NASA speech June 2, Nelson said he is scheduled to speak by phone with Dmitry Rogozin, head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, on June 4, regarding Russias willingness to continue participating in the International Space Station program.

What I hope is that theyre going to think long and hard before they would pull out of the cooperation that they have had with us, he said.

Some Russian officials have suggested in recent months that Russia could pull out of the ISS program as soon as the mid-2020s in favor of a new national space station program. Rogozin, in a June 3 interview with TASS, said that Russia had done all the research it wanted in the space stations orbit, at an inclination of 51 degrees, and argued that a new Russian station in a sun-synchronous orbit would be useful for monitoring Arctic regions.

Rogozin also said in the interview that the aging of the ISS, and growing maintenance costs, was a factor. While he did not commit to ending participation in the station as soon as 2025, he suggested the ISS would not last beyond 2030.

NASA officials have played down the prospects of Russia exiting the ISS partnership. Kathy Lueders, NASAs associate administrator for human exploration and operations, noted after the State of NASA event that two Russian cosmonauts had, earlier in the day, performed a spacewalk lasting more than seven hours to prepare for the removal of the Pirs module. That will free up a port for the new, and long-delayed, Nauka module scheduled for launch July 15.

Launching a new module and activating it is not a sign of pulling out of the relationship, she concluded.

At the same time that Russian officials have proposed ending cooperation with NASA on the ISS, they have taken steps to form a new partnership with China on a proposed International Lunar Research Station. The two countries have invited other nations to join that project, and plan to hold side meetings with prospective partners during the Global Space Exploration (GLEX) Conference later this month in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Nelson, who said he plans to participate virtually in that conference, raised an alarm about growing cooperation between China and Russia in space exploration. Now youre hearing the talk, and serious talk, about Russia and China hitching up together and going to the moon. That is concerning, he said.

Nelson did not mention specific topics for his discussion with Rogozin beyond the future of the ISS partnership. Rogozin said in the TASS interview that he expects to talk with Nelson about proposals to exchange seats between Soyuz and commercial crew vehicles, allowing NASA astronauts to ride on Soyuz spacecraft in exchange for Russian cosmonauts going on Crew Dragon and Starliner vehicles.

Rogozin called Nelson an experienced man in the interview and said he looked forward to his one-on-one call and Nelsons participation at GLEX. The man says wise things, he said of Nelson.

Speaking at a meeting of two National Academies committees May 25, Nelson offered measured praise for Rogozin, who remains sanctioned by the U.S. government for his role as deputy prime minister of Russia during its annexation of Crimea and incursion into eastern Ukraine in 2014.

He has been solid with regard to the continuation of the cooperation with us in space, and I hope that continues, Nelson said of Rogozin. I will certainly urge him to continue that.

Nelson also suggested after the State of NASA event that space may come up during a summit meeting between President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin June 16 in Geneva. Nelson called Biden a space fan and noted the presidents several public appearances associated with NASA since taking office in January.

When he talks with Vladimir Putin, I bet that will be one of the things on their agenda, Nelson said.

If youre a regular user of the Internet, chances are you have seen the various images of Earth captured from the International Space Station (ISS). Amazing, mesmerising, and beautiful, are some among the many adjectives that people often use to react to such pictures. There is a high possibility that youll also be using those words and more after seeing these incredible images shared by two astronauts who are currently aboard ISS.

The first image is tweeted by astronaut Mark T. Vande Hei and it shows the majestic Himalayas. Somewhere on a clear, bright day in the Himalayas. I cant get enough views like this, he wrote while sharing the picture.

Another picture, shared by astronaut Shane Kimbrough, shows an Italian city named Turin. Turin, Italy a city with rich history and culture in northern Italy is easy to spot from @Space_Station, he shared along with the image.

Both the posts received tons of appreciative comments from people. Many expressed their wonder while reacting to the pictures.

China’s New Space Station Is Powered by Ion Thrusters – Futurism

Chinas first module of its upcoming Tiangong space station makes use of ion drives, technology that could vastly cut down the time it takes to travel to Mars and greatly reduce the amount of fuel needed to make that trip, as the South China Morning Postreports.

The module, called Tianhe and launched in late April, is powered by four ion thrusters that use electricity to accelerate ions as a form of propulsion. In fact, the module could soon become the first spacecraft in history to transport humans using the technology, according to SCMP.

Ion drives are orders of magnitude more efficient compared to chemical propulsion. To keep the International Space Station in orbit for a year, the thrusters consume four tons of rocket fuel. With ion thrusters, itd need just 400 kilograms to stay in orbit for the same amount of time, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

A trip to Mars could be cut down from eight months to just 39 days.

China is betting big on ion thrusters, hoping to use them not just for its space station but for upcoming satellite constellations and nuclear-powered spacecraft capable of carrying astronauts to Mars as well, according to SCMP.

The technology has been around for decades, but mainstream adoption has been hampered by the fact that the thrust produced isnt very significant. Scaling up the thrusters could end up putting astronauts in danger and shorten the lifespan of satellites.

But scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences may have cracked the code. One of its ion drives currently in development has been burning for more than 11 months straight, according to the newspaper.

A magnetic field makes sure the particles dont create any damage or erode the engine, while a special ceramic material stops it from getting damaged by radiation.

Space projects are usually very big, an anonymous Beijing-based space scientist told SCMP. A typical mission involves hundreds or even thousands of individuals. But the competition in space is essentially a competition over some very small but extremely important details.

The ion thruster is one of those areas where the devil is in the detail, the scientist added.

Eczema can get worse when you come in contact with irritants or triggers. One part of a good skin care routine should be taking active steps to avoid contact with known triggers.

If you dont know what triggers you have, you may want to keep a journal to help you determine the possible cause of your flares. This way, you can potentially avoid them in the future.

Also, keep in mind that not all triggers come from chemicals or irritants.

For example, the National Eczema Association states that cold, dry air can trigger an eczema flare. During the winter, you may need to change your routine a bit to help keep your skin protected.

No two cases of eczema are exactly alike. As a result, what works for some people may not work as well for you, and vice versa.

In an article for the National Eczema Association, dermatologist Margaret Lee notes that you may find relief with products not specifically designed for eczema care. A WOMAN has revealed she was forced to quit her job because of extreme pain - after ditching her eczema steroids.

Andrea Cisneros, from the US, used topical steroid creams to treat her eczema but was left in agony when she came off them 18 months ago.

She eventually had to leave her job as a dental hygienist and lost her flat, all due to topical steroid withdrawal.

At her worst, she was bed-ridden for months, with her skin oozing, her sheets covered in blood and showers making her cry from the pain.

She says: "I wished I would die because the pain and discomfort were unbearable, especially at night; when I would scream from pain."

Topical steroids are commonly prescribed on the NHS and remain one of the most effective ways to treat eczema.

But they should be a short-term solution and if over-used, they can lead to horrible TSW reactions like Andrea experienced.

Now a holistic health coach, Andrea shared her story on Facebook earlier this month.

She wrote: "For the past 18 months Ive been suffering from Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), a condition that is 100% iatrogenic (meaning caused by medication; in this case topical steroids).

"I went into TSW when I stopped using steroids. TSW is not a choice; the steroids stopped working and worsened my initial condition (eczema).

"Steroids cause nerve and blood vessel damage I eventually had to stop working and move out of my apartment.

"Working with TSW was tough; it was so difficult to open my eyes in the mornings, I was weak, napping during my breaks, had swollen ankles, my clothes were sticking to my skin and showers would cause me to cry from excruciating pain I spent about 9 months limping/hunched over because the wounds on the back on my legs/body were so bad.

What is topical steroid withdrawal?

MISSISSAUGA, ON, June 1, 2021 /CNW/ - Sanofi Canada is very pleased to announce that Quebec has extended its listing of DUPIXENT (dupilumab injection) under the Rgie de l'assurance maladie du Qubec (RAMQ) to include public reimbursement for Canadians aged 12 years and older whose disease is not adequately controlled with topical prescription therapies or when those therapies are not advisable. The specific criteria for reimbursement are available on the RAMQ website.

AD, the most common form of eczema, is an inflammatory disease classified by dry, itchy skin. Gene therapy seeks to modify or introduce genes into a patients body with the goal of durably treating, preventing or potentially even curing disease, including several types of cancer, viral diseases, and inherited disorders. Gene therapy approaches include replacing a mutated gene that causes disease with a functional copy; or introducing a new, correct copy of a gene into the body in order to fight disease.

Gene therapy may be performed in vivo, in which a gene is transferred to cells inside the patients body, or ex vivo, in which a gene is delivered to cells outside of the body, which are then transferred back into the body.

Typically, gene therapy developers introduce new or corrected genes into patient cells using vectors, which are often deactivated viruses. Deactivated viruses are unable to make patients sick, but rather serve as the vehicle to transfer the new genetic material into the cell. Viruses that have been used for human gene therapy include retroviruses, adenoviruses, herpes simplex, vaccinia, and adeno-associated virus (AAV). Other ways of introducing new genetic material into cells include non-viral vectors, such as nanoparticles and nanospheres.

Gene therapy techniques can also be used to genetically modify patient cells ex vivo, which are then re-introduced into the patients body in order to fight disease, an approach known as gene-modified cell therapy. This approach includes a number of cell-based immunotherapy techniques, such as chimeric antigen receptors (CAR) T cell therapies, T cell receptor (TCR) therapies, natural killer (NK) cell therapies, tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), marrow derived lymphocytes (MILs), gammadelta T cells, and dendritic vaccines.

It has been several weeks since I came back from Berlin. I was visiting the international mRNA health conference, where I presented our latest development in the mRNA therapy field. Unlike the USA and Europe, mRNA research in Australia is still a young concept. As far as we know, we are probably one of the only groups in Australia who are actively working on mRNA therapy. On my way back to Australia thinking of all the great discoveries I just witnessed in the conference- I had a thought. I must write about mRNA therapy, so more people can know about it. Because when mRNA therapy reaches its age, it will touch most of us.

To understand this new class of therapies, we must first understand what makes up mRNA and gene therapies. These molecules are known as nucleic acids. In our cells, there are two major types of nucleic acid molecules: Genomic DNA and mRNA. These carry the manual for all the instructions your cells and body need. They are the code for life. The basic principle of traditional gene therapy is to insert or add a DNA molecule, with specific designed instructions and is translated by your cell as a protein. In the case of gene therapy, it treats people who lack that protein. mRNA, also known as messenger RNA, is naturally found in all our cells. mRNA is responsible for carrying out a message from the DNA that lies inside the nucleus to the cytoplasm. In there, the proteins are made from the mRNA sequence in a process known as translation. So mRNA therapy uses mRNA molecules instead of DNA molecules, thereby bypassing the need for DNA and simplifying the process (See the figure below).

Nucleic acid therapy, whether it is derived from mRNA or DNA, is a transformational concept in medicine. In contrast to conventional drugs- small molecules acting on a protein or a target inside your body- nucleic acid therapy instead instruct your body to make or break the proteins inside your cells at a more fundamental level. You could imagine your DNA and mRNA as the operating program system (OS) for life. Much like computer OS, mRNA therapy can reprogram your body to produce its own therapies. An intriguing concept, indeed.

Back to Berlins conference, many academic and biotech groups presented a wide range of medical applications using mRNA. We and others have envisaged, many times, the range of applications mRNA therapy can have.

Given the mRNA inherent programmability, its relatively easy to adjust the sequence of mRNA to make, theoretically, any therapeutic protein. This means it can cover a wide range of diseases. Examples of applications that have gone into clinical trials (i.e. trialled in a small number of humans) are cancer immunotherapy, viral vaccines and enzyme replacement therapy for the liver. But the list, as we all expect, wont stop here. In the context of the human application, many groups and biotech companies presented impressive findings, but these results are still early.

Effectiveness: Conventional DNA gene therapy needs to overcome many challenges before it becomes a therapeutically viable option. For DNA gene therapy to be active, it requires to reach not only the cell but the very nucleus inside that cell. This is an incredibly difficult task given that our nuclei have evolved to prevent any foreign DNA from entering (Think viruses!). While mRNA therapy shares some of the difficulties of traditional gene therapy, it requires to reach only the cytoplasm of the cells, not the nucleus. Arguably, this is a simpler technical challenge compared to DNA therapy.

Safety: This is the second most important factor facing the field today. While viral gene therapies have been somewhat successful recently, mRNA provides three main advantages over viral gene therapies. The first is how long mRNA lasts. Unlike viral gene therapies which may last months or years, traditional mRNA last for only a short period, no more than a week or two. In the case of overdose, a real possibility with any form of medicine, mRNA overdose problem can last only for a couple of days. This is far more tolerable than an issue that sticks for a very long time- a theoretical possibility with the viral gene therapy. Secondly, the nature of mRNA (i.e. being an RNA) prevents it from integrating into your genome (a DNA). Genetic integrations using viral gene therapies, while a rare event, can have a devastating effect if the integration was placed in the wrong spot in your genome. The third safety concern comes with our immune system. Our immune system has a low tolerance for viral gene therapies because these therapies are delivered by a virus (We call it a viral vector). Our body will attack not only the virus carrying the therapy but possibly the cells that the virus reaches. Although there have been improvements to reduce the viral vector problems, mRNA therapy uses an entirely synthetic combination of materials that are well-tolerated in humans. And the chances are far lower for developing a long-lasting problematic immune reaction.

Affordability: Today, the cost of medicine is a significant concern for patients and governments alike. As the pace of new medical innovation is accelerating, new technologies to produce those medicines safely and in sufficient quantities have not caught up yet. New gene therapies based on viral vector called AAV have a gigantic price tag ranging from $750k -$2 mil USD (1,2). The reason for the enormous price comes, in part, from the difficulty of manufacturing safe viral gene therapy and from the lack of clarity on the cost-benefit balance by marketing companies. Since viral gene therapies are likely to last for years, the price for such medicine has unfortunately skyrocketed to compensate for a one-shot approach. mRNA therapy, on the other hand, has a cheaper production price-tag and can be given, regularly, just as conventional medicins. This will aid a more straightforward pricing plan at least in the near future.

Some aspects of mRNA are still under thorough testing, but the development the field has seen in the past five years is mind-boggling. mRNA could be as effective as viral gene therapies but safer and more affordable. Yet many challenges, for example, delivering to different cells in our bodies must be improved if this new class of medicines is set to reach the masses.
