Lessons for the grandkids that there’s strength in your DNA – INFORUM

Posted: October 7, 2021 at 3:39 pm

I lost three out of my four grandparents when I was just a kid in the early 70s, so it was hardly on my radar to quiz them about the good old days, when I was wrapped up in more important matters like Whos better The Osmonds or The Jackson 5?

I would have had the chance with my last remaining grandparent, Grandma Charlotte, who died when I was 28. But I didn't take it. Charlotte, better known by us as "Mommygan," was an old Southern lady, a mad good knitter who also liked to drink bourbon while watching Jeopardy.

She was kind of a character.

Once when I was a kid snacking on sunflower seeds and drinking a Mountain Dew, Mommygan said, in her luxurious Southern drawl, Why, back in Nashville, Mountain Dew was moonshine and we only gave sunflower seeds to the birds. The woman had flair and Im sure stories to spare.

I just didnt really get to hear them.

Fortunately, the same cant be said for Alice Bjorklund Gunness grandchildren.

Alice, at the age of 88, has just released her second book of stories and memories, Nurtured by Nature Book II. And it's simply delightful.

I first met Alice in 2018 when she achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a published author with her first Nurtured by Nature book she wrote at the age of 85. But apparently the writing itch had not been sufficiently scratched, and the pandemic allowed Alice even more time to write her stories.

Photographer Dave Samson and I caught up with Alice a couple of weeks ago as she was hosting a book signing for her fans at Riverview Place in Fargo where she lives. Dressed in beautiful florals, she softly read some of the passages from her book. Most of the chapters are about her ancestors and the hardships they endured as they settled in Otter Tail County, Minn.

My dad came over from Sweden and got married in 1917. Prices for land were high at the time, so my dad had to chop down so many trees to make enough money to buy the land. Then the stock market crashed and the Depression hit. It was tough, she says.

But Alice says her ancestors overcame the hardships, and thats what she wants her five children, eight grandchildren and three (soon to be six) great-grandchildren to remember.

I think it's so important that they know the struggles their ancestors went through and while times might be difficult for them now, they can get through it.

Alice starts to tear up when she talks about how her stories might help her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who live far away, to navigate their own lives.

Theyre going to have hard times too and they better be prepared. We all have struggles and life isnt always easy. I want them to know that times might be different, but some things dont change, she says.

Alice says shes so happy to hear that her homespun tales have proven comforting to people shes not even related to. She says one woman told her she reads her stories every night before bed.

Alice and her family are quick to point out the many people who helped her publish the book, including Karla Smart-Morstad, David Morstad, Terry Sinner and more.

Her daughter, Sarah Ostrem, is grateful to all of the people whove made her moms dreams come true.

Its Gods miracle that she was given so many wonderful helpers, Ostrem says.

Her son, Arthur Gunness, once said of his mothers writings, Well, Mom, I think you found your passion.

Alice just smiles at that.

But the best part of finding that passion is that Alices descendants won't have to search for their family stories the way so many of us have had to.

Way to go, Alice! Thanks for the memories!

Ill leave you with this plea: Grandmothers and grandfathers, follow Alices lead. While you dont necessarily need to write your stories down in a book, make sure to share them with loved ones. And grandchildren, listen and soak it all in. I promise you wont regret it.

DNA study points to three ancestral populations for modern Japanese | The Asahi Shimbun: Breaking News, Japan News and Analysis – Asahi Shimbun

Posted: at 3:39 pm

A new study suggests that modern Japanese have descended from three ancestral populations, including people in the Kofun Period between the third and seventh century.

According to current mainstream theory, Japanese have mixed origins in the Jomon people known for their distinctive pottery culture (c. 14500 B.C.-1000 B.C.) and the Yayoi people with their own pottery culture (1000 B.C.-A.D. 250).

However, a DNA analysis of human bones from about 1,500 years ago during the Kofun Period showed genetic characteristics unique to East Asians, which are found in present-day Japanese but not in prehistoric Jomon and Yayoi people, researchers said.

This is the first evidence that Japanese have descended from three ancestral populations of Jomon, Yayoi and Kofun people, said Takashi Gakuhari, an assistant professor of archaeological science at Kanazawa Universitys Center for the Study of Ancient Civilizations and Cultural Resources.

An international team of researchers from Kanazawa University, Tottori University and other institutions published their findings in the U.S. journal Science Advances on Sept. 18.

According to the widely accepted dual structure model theory announced in 1991 by Kazuro Hanihara, who was a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo at the time, modern Japanese have mixed origins in indigenous Jomon hunter-gatherers and succeeding Yayoi farmers.

The Jomon people inhabited across the Japanese archipelago, and they eventually became the Yayoi people after immigrant groups arrived from the Asian continent.

The research team analyzed DNA of 12 remains, including a Jomon person from about 9,000 years ago and a Kofun individual from about 1,500 years ago and compare the data with those from two Yayoi people whose DNA had been previously examined.

The researchers studied which one of the ancient populations was genetically close to modern Japanese based on traces of small differences caused by mutations when genetic information was passed from the parent to the child.

They confirmed that the Yayoi people had genetic characteristics commonly found in people in Northeast Asia, including areas along the Liao River in northeastern China, and that they admixed with the Jomon people.

The Kofun people had genetic characteristics widely found among East Asians but not in the Yayoi people. They also shared genetic characteristics almost identical to modern Japanese.

Large-scale migrations from the continent date back to about 3,000 years ago during the Yayoi Period. The researchers said additional immigrant groups, such as Han Chinese, came to Japan, handing down textile, civil engineering and other technologies during the Kofun Period.

The researchers said they need to analyze more remains from the Kofun Period to confirm the new theory. The latest analysis covered bones of only three Kofun individuals excavated in Kanazawa.

We want to close in on the mystery of the origins of Japanese by studying the genomes of other Kofun and Yayoi people, Gakuhari said.

Still-Frozen Martian Sand Dunes Seem to Be Charging Into the Great Unknown – autoevolution

Posted: at 3:38 pm

Its been 15 years already since the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) reached the neighboring planets orbit with only one goal in mind: survey it from above. In that time, countless images of the Red Planet have made their way back to Earth, but most of them have remained largely unknown to the wider public for various reasons.

To help these guys along, weve started our Get to Know Mars section, and weve featured quite the number of Mars images already. Today, were all learning about how the frozen dunes of the planet seem to be charging into the great unknown once the sublimation process starts going during the planets spring season.

What youre looking at on the right side of the image is a region in the Kaiser Crater, an area filled with dunes that during the winter get covered in dry ice.Once temperatures rise during spring, this carbon dioxide ice sublimates, moving directly from solid to gas state, and creating in the process incredible rippled images on the surface.

The image youre looking at now was taken by HiRISE from an altitude of 250 km (155 miles) back in 2016, but was only recently dusted off by the operators of the orbital camera. The American space agency says the alcoves visible at the crest of the dunes could have been formed by the gas coming from the dry ice.

Just like all other images sent back from Mars over the years, this one too could lead to a better understanding of the planet were planning to colonize over the coming decades, provided we can stick to our ambitious space exploration goals.

Did Elon Musk Just Make a Game of Thrones Reference About Tesla? – News18

Posted: at 3:38 pm

Elon Musk wants to colonize Mars and put Dogecoin on the moon. The Tesla CEO and SpaceX boss, cryptocurrency Dogecoin market mover, Bitcoin enthusiast, serial meme-poster on Twitter may also be a fan of the hit TV series, Game of Thrones. The chief of Tesla recently replied to a tweet posted by Clean Technica containing an article link that read Looks Like Tesla Paid Off Its $1.4 Billion China Loan Agreement For Giga Shanghai Early." The story on the website went on to detail that In December 2019, Tesla was granted a $1.4 billion loan from Chinese banks for Giga Shanghai. The five-year loan was partially used to roll over previous debts. The rest of the money would go towards Giga Shanghai and Tesla Chinas operations. The interest rate was pegged at 90% of Chinas one-year benchmark interest rate." The article also detailed that Teslas Q2 2021 balance sheet no longer shows the $1.4 billion loan or any portion of it, implying that any restrictions on Tesla associated with those loans have ended.

Elon Musk on Twitter had replied to the statement with Tesla always pays its debts."

While to most people Musks sentence may seem just like an example of exceptional integrity for one of the worlds richest billionaires, for Games of Thrones fans, the line reminded them of one from the series. A Lannister always pays his debts."

What does the Game of Thrones line mean? The official Lannister motto is actually Hear Me Roar," which underlines the Lions power, strength and ferocity that they want to project. But this motto is rarely used. Behind closed doors, the Lannisters are defined by their unofficial saying, A Lannister Always Pays His Debts. On one level, the saying reminds everyone that the Lannisters are rich. On the literal level, A Lannister Always Pays His Debts means they can be trusted to pay back favors or loans, but the motto has a flipside - if wronged, a Lannister will seek revenge, explained The Take on Game of Thrones symbolism.

While Tesla may have paid off their debts to China, they certainly didnt pay Musk much for his contributions to the company. In August this year, Musk revealed his compensation from Tesla, one of the worlds largest e-vehicle companies, however, was allegedly zero in the year 2020. Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) said Chief Executive Officer Elon Musks total compensation for 2020 was nil, compared to $23,760 in 2019, reported Reuters. The electric-car maker also said in a regulatory filing that finance chief Zachary Kirkhorns total compensation was $46.6 million, versus the $21.2 million he got in 2019. The pay package of Musk, who is also a major shareholder and CEO of rocket maker SpaceX, requires Teslas market capitalization and financial growth to hit a series of rising targets. As of April, Musk had qualified for Tesla options in his 2018 pay package that are now worth over $30 billion.

Tesla added Technoking of Tesla" to Musks list of official titles in a regulatory filing in March that also named Kirkhorn Master of Coin." In April, Reuters had reported that Musk, who is also a major shareholder and CEO of rocket maker SpaceX, receives no salary at Tesla. His pay package requires Teslas market capitalization and financial growth to hit a series of rising target.

There’s an asteroid worth $11 trillion located near Earth – TweakTown

Posted: at 3:38 pm

Reports are indicating that one of two asteroids located near Earth may contain $11 trillion worth of precious metals that could be harvested in the future.

A new study published in The Planetary Science Journal details an asteroid dubbed 1986 DA, and according to the researchers behind the study, the asteroid may contain $11.65 trillion worth of precious metals. The paper states that the asteroid may be a target for "for asteroid mining in the future." Space mining will be a massive industry when it becomes accessible, as retrieving valuable resources from the abundance of space will assist human civilization into unlocking new technology.

However, humans still have quite some time before that becomes and a reality. When humans have begun to colonize other planets such as Mars and have the tools to mine space rocks, asteroids such as 1986 DA and others like it will become valuable prospects for colonies that are lacking in certain resources such as metals.

The researchers wrote the study, "Our analysis shows that both near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) have surfaces with 85% metal such as iron and nickel and 15% silicate material, which is basically rock. These asteroids are similar to some stony-iron meteorites such as mesosiderites found on Earth."

China bans depictions of gay people on television …

Posted: at 3:34 pm

The Chinese government has banned all depictions of gay people on television, as part of a cultural crackdown on vulgar, immoral and unhealthy content.

Chinese censors have released new regulations for content that exaggerates the dark side of society and now deem homosexuality, extramarital affairs, one night stands and underage relationships as illegal on screen.

Last week the Chinese government pulled a popular drama, Addicted, from being streamed on Chinese websites as it follows two men in gay relationships, causing uproar among the shows millions of viewers.

The government said the show contravened the new guidelines, which state that No television drama shall show abnormal sexual relationships and behaviours, such as incest, same-sex relationships, sexual perversion, sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual violence, and so on.

The ban also extends to smoking, drinking, adultery, sexually suggestive clothing, even reincarnation. Chinas State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television told television producers it would constantly monitor TV channels to ensure the new rules were strictly adhered to.

The clampdown follows an increase in cultural censorship in China since Xi Jinping came to power in November 2012. In December 2014, censors stopped a TV show, The Empress of China, from being broadcast because the actors showed too much cleavage. The show only returned to screens once the breasts had been blurred out.

In September 2015, a documentary about young gay Chinese called Mama Rainbow was taken down from all Chinese websites.

The new regulations have angered gay activists in China, who have fought for two decades to overcome the substantial stigma in their country against homosexuality. It was only decriminalised in 1997 and was only taken off the official list of mental illnesses in 2001.

In November, one Chinese campaigner took the government to court over its description of homosexuality as a psychological disorder in textbooks.

Censorship of David Replicas Manhood Stirs Controversy in Dubai – Surface Magazine

Posted: at 3:34 pm

Perched nude and contrapposto at the Galleria dellAccademia in Florence, Michelangelos David is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. Visitors to Expo 2020 Dubai now have the chance to see a 3D-printed reproduction of the chiseled marble statue, but only from the shoulders up. The replica stands 23 feet tall within the Italian pavilions octagonal two-story gallery, but only diplomats and VIPs will have exclusive access to the pavilions lower floorand unimpeded views of Davids undercarriage.

Italian media is decrying the decision. When the statue was uncovered and seen by the Emiratis, there was enormous embarrassment, an anonymous Italian source told La Repubblica. We even considered putting underpants on him or changing the statue, but it was too late. Art critic Vittorio Sgarbi describes it as an unprecedented, unacceptable, intolerable humiliation made in deference to Islamic tradition. While not stated outright, its believed that artistic director Davide Rampello reckoned with concerns over showing the heroic male nude in front of conservative Emiratis.

Rampello denied the allegations of censorship. According to him, the decision was purely functionalto allow visitors to see David from eye level, a vastly different and more personal perspective than what tourists typically enjoy in Florence. An Emirati tour guide, meanwhile, doesnt seem to mind: We look at nudity as something which shouldnt be displayed but in practice, when it comes to art, I feel people are opening up to it.

The censored David will be on display in the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai until March 31, 2022.

What Facebook ‘whistleblower’ Frances Haugen really wants: more censorship of conservative views – New York Post

Posted: at 3:34 pm

How convenient that Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen just gave the social network another excuse to crack down on conservative content.

In her congressional testimony Tuesday, Haugen, a data scientist, called on Congress to enact more regulations on her former employer to combat misinformation on the platform, saying the company puts profits over public safety.

At issue for Haugen is Facebooks algorithm, which in 2018 the company changed to prioritize high-engagement content, thereby contributing according to Haugen to increased divisiveness and polarization among users. Haugen even went so far as to say that Facebooks switching off of safeguards after the 2020 election led to the Jan. 6 US Capitol riot.

Fast forward a couple months, we got the insurrection, she said in an interview with 60 Minutes on Sunday.

Whatever you think of the Capitol riot, Facebook did not cause it. The way Haugen used the word insurrection hinted of her likely progressive-lefty politics revealing her true motives. And what Haugen means by safeguards is no doubt censoring of conservative content, in a way Post readers know all too well.

Thats her main objective: censorship. She wants a complete overhaul of the content-moderation rules on Facebook, including an independent governmental body overseeing such changes. And as a good progressive, she pushes these new regulations under the guise of safety.

Facebook has demonstrated they cannot act independently, Haugen told 60 Minutes. The company over and over again chooses its profits over safety. It is subsidizing it is paying for its profits with our safety, and Im hoping that this will have a big enough impact on the world that they get the fortitude and the motivation to actually go put those regulations into place.

Like clockwork, a couple of hours after Haugens congressional testimony, Facebooks Director of Policy Communications Lena Pietsch jumped on Haugens push for more regulations.

We dont agree with her characterization of the many issues she testified about, Pietsch said in a statement. Despite all this, we agree on one thing; its time to begin to create standard rules for the Internet. Its been 25 years since the rules for the Internet have been updated, and instead of expecting the industry to make societal decisions that belong to legislators, it is time for Congress to act.

It seems like Haugen and Facebook have been on the same side this entire time. And it makes sense, as Haugen doesnt actually want to break up Facebook.

Instead, shed like the company to remain a billion-dollar monopoly imposing extreme-content regulations on its users. All while this is overseen by a federal agency created at her behest and staffed, no doubt, by former Facebook employees.

Haugen did leak some important information on Facebooks coverup of Instagrams negative effects on teen girls mental health (although who doesnt know this to be true?) and its lax treatment of drug cartels and human traffickers on its platform. But her drive for censorship wont remotely fix those issues.

Her objective is censorship. She wants Facebook and Instagram and all social-media companies, for that matter to enact safeguards to combat misinformation and hate. However, given the hyper-politicized arena and the Democrats past form for weaponizing supposedly impartial government agencies to push a progressive-elitist agenda, many will assume thismeans banning of conservative content or that which is negative to the Democratic Party.

It is one thing to propose an independent body to force Big Tech platforms to reveal the mechanics behind their algorithmicmachines of virality to spark a transparent discussion about how information is distributed and controlled. But it is far more perilous to police what is acceptable or fact. Without proper independence and rigor, it has been proven time and again that what is deemed fact and what is not merely depends on whether the person in charge wants it to be.

In this case, without once defining either misinformation, or hate, (again, the subtext was clearly right-wing content all along), Haugen opened the door for all content Silicon Valley dislikes to be banned.

If that happens, say goodbye forever to stories like The Posts expos of Hunter Bidens e-mails, which Facebook banned. Or suggestions that COVID may have originated at the Wuhan lab the theme of another squelched Post column long before the idea gained broader acceptance.

Some whistleblower, Frances Haugen. She just gave Big Tech and its progressive buddies the go-ahead to ramp up its censorship and control of the American public.

Victoria Marshall is the Collegiate Network Fellow atThe Post.

Comedian Jim Norton discusses censorship, flat-Earthers and his admiration for Joan Rivers | 90.1 FM WABE – WABE 90.1 FM

Posted: at 3:34 pm

Stand-up comedian, actor, and writer Jim Norton will perform at the Punchline in Atlanta, tomorrow through Saturday. After a hiatus from live shows due to COVID, Nortons spicy and irreverent humor returns to the stage with new material and plenty to joke about. The comedian joined City Lights host Lois Reitzes via Zoom for a conversation covering such weighty topics as flat-Earthers, Lost, and gaining pounds in quarantine.

Interview highlights:

On committing to comedy:

It was honestly the only thing I ever wanted to do. I wanted to be a lawyer at one point, but Princeton wouldnt accept me because I had dropped out of high school. So I said, You know what? I have no education, Im driving a forklift and this is what I really want to do. I left myself no backup plan on purpose because it forced me to be a good comic, or I would have no way to make a living.

On Joan Rivers and other heroes:

I saw [Joan Rivers] at the Cutting Room here in New York She was 80 at the time, and she had note cards on the stage, on the floor, said Norton. She was a barbarian for an hour, and it was great. There was nothing off-limits Shes one of the all-time greats and she doesnt get the credits she deserves.

[Richard Pryor] was my favorite comedian of all time. I imagine if he saw my act now, he would say, Take my name out of your bio. Hed be slightly embarrassed that I love him so much, but he was the guy that made me want to do comedy.

On sensitivities and censorship in comedy:

Comedians have to deal with things through humor, but no one is telling Stephen King not to kill children in his books. No one is telling actors not to play slave-owners, not to play slashers, not to play murderers, or not to play rapists. So for people to think that comedy is harmful, when portraying someone committing a horrible act in seriousness can get you an award, I just reject the idea that comedians as performers should be limited in a way that any other form of the arts is not limited.

I think, as a performer, any subject you want to touch is absolutely acceptable; all that matters is, do you do it well, or do you do it poorly? And I think thats what you should be judged on.

Jim Norton performs stand-up at the Punchline in Atlanta on Thursday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 9. Tickets and information are available at http://www.punchline.com/shows.
